The ‘De Groene Grachten’ (The Green Canals) project is taking the first steps towards a sustainable Canal Ring. Amsterdam’s famous Canal Ring will celebrate its 400th anniversary in 2013, making it the perfect time to demonstrate the city’s sustainability ambitions. During 2012 & 2013, ‘The Green Canals’ initiative will supervise the conservation of three canal houses. Working together with property owners, residents, businesses and the City of Amsterdam, the initiative will explore innovative applications to help make these historical properties energy neutral. Primary considerations include energy saving, utilisation of wasted energy and sustainable energy generation. These buildings will become role models for the city and show what can be achieved. The option of increasing the scale of the project after 2013 will also be examined, looking towards keeping the Canal Ring in prime condition for the next 400 years!
