My name is Arshitha and I am currently a Master's student at the University of Twente, I am doing my thesis on the topic of 'Inclusion in Smart Cities'.

I am currently looking for researches or members of the city administrations or NGOs in Amsterdam, Barcelona and Hamburg who are interested in participating in a research interview for my Master Thesis Project.

The study's main objective is to look further into actual strategies of digital and social inclusion initiatives that can be implemented for the development of a Smart City that is inclusive and accessible to it’s citizens. I want to get real-life insights and learn about the barriers that organizations in the implementation of digital inclusion projects and use to it make a reference framework for my thesis project.

The interviews will be semi-structured and I hope to complete it by the end of April 2024. It should not take more than an hour or an hour and a half.

Wat is de impact van (platform)technologie op de overheid van de toekomst en haar rol in de (door o.a. technologie) veranderende samenleving? Wil jij de toekomst tastbaar en beeldend maken en meedoen met een groeiende beweging van jonge (t/m 35 jaar) visionairen, denkers en doeners?
Doe dan mee aan de toekomstverkenning publieke platformen georganiseerd door FUTUR en Provincie Zuid-Holland en ondersteund door Scape Agency.

Vanuit verschillende thematische invalshoeken gaan we hiermee aan de slag in groepen van ongeveer 10 jonge professionals vanuit verschillende organisaties (Publiek, privaat en kennis). Een beschrijving van de eerste thema’s vind je hieronder:

Thema's
- Circulair 2050 - De ambitie om in 2050 niet alleen klimaatneutraal, maar ook nog eens onze economie 100% circulair in te richten, vergt een omslag in denken en doen. Hoe buigen we lineaire ketens rond? Waar beginnen we? En cruciaal: welke rol speelt het publieke platform in deze transitie?
- Zicht op maatschappelijke vraagstukken met data – Data is onmisbaar voor het oplossen van maatschappelijke vraagstukken. Hoe zetten we data verantwoord in voor het benutten van deze kansen?
-Digitale Waterschappen – Bestuurt AI in 2050 het waterbeheer, of wordt water juist lokaal beheert?
-Ambtenaar van de toekomst – Als steeds meer taken worden overgenomen door (platform)technologie, wat is dan de rol van de ambtenaar van de toekomst en welke vaardigheden worden gevraagd?
- Participatie – hoe kan de overheid betrokkenheid van inwoners, bedrijven en maatschappelijke organisaties vormgeven bij beleid en besluitvorming?
- Uitvoering van de toekomst – De meeste publieke dienstverleners leveren een stand van de uitvoering aan. Hoe moet de uitvoering en publieke dienstverlening van de toekomst worden vormgegeven?
- Online leefwereld van jongeren – Welke publieke waarden moeten vooropstaan op social media, hoe ziet een dergelijk platform eruit en welke digitale vaardigheden van jongeren zijn cruciaal?
- Tomorrows Governance – hoe verandert de rol, organisatie en wijze van samenwerken van de overheid?
- Mobiliteit en Brede Welvaart - Wat is de impact van (platform)technologie op de bijdrage van mobiliteit aan de brede welvaart van mensen door de bereikbaarheid van banen, voorzieningen en sociale contacten in de stad, en de regio?
- Sociaal Domein – Hoe kan platformtechnologie bijdragen aan de complexe problemen in het sociaal domein? Hoe ga je toe naar een overheid die er voor de inwoner is, in plaats van de inwoner van het kastje naar de muur stuurt.

Wat betekent meedoen?
- Je sluit je aan bij een themagroep. En doet mee in de voorbereiding, dus het verzamelen van voorbeeldcases uit eigen werk, rapporten, studies, literatuur, films enz.
- Je doet op 13 februari mee met de visiedag (09:00 - 13:00), en bij voorkeur ook de aansluitende verbeeldingsdialoog in het Provinciehuis van de Provincie Zuid-Holland in den haag. Op deze dag werken de themagroepen met ondersteuning van ontwerpers en kunstenaars hun toekomstbeeld uit.
Je bent in maart beschikbaar voor 1 digitale of fysieke sessie voor de verdere uitwerking van het toekomstbeeld.
- Je bent op 4 april aanwezig (vermoedelijk enkel de middag) bij het slotevent ‘publieke platformen’ georganiseerd door de provincie Zuid-Holland in het provinciehuis. Op 4 april ‘exposeren’ de groepen hun toekomstbeeld aan een breder publiek, en wordt er op verschillende manier een dialoog georganiseerd tussen bezoekers, experts en bestuurders.
- Je vergroot je netwerk, je doet inspiratie op voor de vraagstukken waar jij dagelijks mee bezig bent en je hebt vooral plezier.

Ben jij oprichter, directeur of manager van een MKB bedrijf dat zich (nog) niet echt bezighoudt met circulariteit? Dan zijn we op zoek naar jou!

Op 10 oktober organiseren we vanuit Amsterdam Smart City een werksessie waarin we de vraag willen beantwoorden: "Hoe brengen we circulariteit naar het MKB?". Deze sessie wordt georganiseerd in samenwerking met de gemeente Amsterdam, en er zullen nog meer overheden aanwezig zijn. Om deze vraag goed te beantwoorden hebben we de input van echte MKB'ers nodig. We willen weten waar ze tegen aan lopen en wat overheden beter kunnen doen om ze te helpen.

Werk jij aan één of meerdere initiatieven of ondernemingen die bijdragen aan een Amsterdam met voor iedereen een eerlijke, sociale basis maar binnen veilige ecologische grenzen. Dat noemen wij een 'Donut Pionier': iemand die de Donut Economie in regio Amsterdam een stapje dichterbij brengt.

Om deze transitie naar een circulaire economie te versnellen willen we het belang en de impact laten zien van initiatieven, belangrijke drempels wegnemen en zoeken naar praktische oplossingen om initiatieven te laten groeien. Daarvoor hebben we jouw kennis en ervaring nodig.

Dit onderzoek
Je bent bij het werken aan jouw initiatief of onderneming vast uitdagingen tegengekomen. Denk daarbij bijvoorbeeld aan regelgeving die niet lijkt aan te sluiten bij je initiatief. Maar ook aan andere drempels die groei van jouw initiatief in de weg staan zoals ruimte, financiering, mensen, middelen, capaciteit, kennis of vooroordelen. Misschien heb je ook geleerd over oplossingen die daarbij werkten, of juist niet. Ten slotte zijn we nieuwsgierig naar de impact die je maakt. Deze vragen staan centraal in dit onderzoek. We richten ons op de succesvolle initiatieven, maar ook op die initiatieven die de drempels en problemen niet hebben kunnen overwinnen en uiteindelijk niet succesvol waren. Van beide valt veel te leren.

De resultaten
Op basis van dit onderzoek kunnen we de grootste uitdagingen agenderen en de beste oplossingen ontwikkelen of delen. Daarvoor analyseren we de reacties op deze vragen in september, met een aantal experts. We delen relevante inzichten met andere Donut Pioniers, maar vertalen het ook door naar beleidsmakers, het onderwijs en de arbeidsmarkt. Daarvoor werken we samen met onder meer de gemeente Amsterdam, Kennisland, Olympia, de HvA en de UvA. Ook werken we aan een Europees vervolg van dit onderzoek waarin verschillende steden worden vergeleken, om lessen te delen en samen te werken aan oplossingen.

What’s in it for you?
We realiseren ons dat je tijd beperkt is. Daarom proberen we je zoveel mogelijk terug te geven.
- De uitdagingen en oplossingen van andere pioniers delen we, met hun goedkeuring, ook met jou. Hopelijk helpt dit je om je doelen te halen.
- Je verhaal kan als voorbeeld worden opgenomen in publicaties in het kader van de 750 verjaardag van Amsterdam, of het internationale onderzoek. Dit ter lering en inspiratie voor iedereen die een stap wil zetten in het maken van positieve impact.
- We agenderen belangrijke concrete drempels bij de relevante partijen zoals de gemeente en werken met hen aan gerichte oplossingen. En daar betrekken we jou bij, als je interesse hebt.

Het vinden van de belangrijkste uitdagingen is één. Het belangrijkste is dat we hiervoor gerichte oplossingen ontwikkelen en de transitie naar een circulaire economie kunnen versnellen.  

De tijdlijn
- 4 september - Deadline voor de vragenlijst. 
- Eind september - We analyseren de resultaten in een workshop, oa. met Donut Pioniers. In de vragenlijst kun je je hiervoor opgeven.
- 13 november - We presenteren de resultaten op de Donut Dag.

I am a mid-career Architect and, Urban and Regional Planner. I recently graduated with a second master's (MSc.) from IHS, Erasmus University Rotterdam, with a Specialization in "Infrastructure and Smart Cities". My MSc. thesis research topic was based on Circular Economy concepts including the Circular Business Model and High-value reuse of material and components.

I am very passionate about smart cities and sustainability, and I am highly inspired by all the work in the smart city area that is being done in the Netherlands, where I hope to contribute and make a positive impact.

Previously, in addition to planning and project management roles, I have worked in relevant areas of smart mobility, ICT Infrastructure, renewable energy, and waste to energy, among others as part of consulting firms.

Hi All,
Since 2018, Ozarka works every variety of vendor or restaurant replacing disposable food containers with reusables, big or small, doesn't matter. As you can imagine, we are growing like crazy.

Our wash and sanitation model is decentralized. We have one main wash and sanitation facility called the "Sparkle Jar." We install "outposts" or mini-sparkle jars for wash and sanitation rather than build out more huge facilities. There are a variety of reasons for this (all good, more sustainable, and more affordable for our clients).

We need a lot more of these mini centers. SJ3, SJ4, SJ5...you get the idea. We are looking for partners that have the same commercial dishwashers we have that are not used very often Think office canteens, corporate food courts, hotels. Or, do you have water hookups and extra space that is not being used that we can rent out from you?

The most ideal locations are sort of on the outskirts of the centrum but still inside the A10. Hemshaven or Veemkade area...Oost, West, Noord are ideal locations.

The reuse revolution is really starting to take off! Our growth is going straight up and we need the Amsterdam Smart City community to help us expand our logistics by tapping into infrastructure that already exists.

Wastebuild Zero is the conference that brings together the sustainable construction ecosystem to showcase the latest materials, techniques, solutions and innovations that contribute to lower CO2 emissions. It will take place on 11 and 12 May 2023 at the NDSM wharf, in the NDSM Loods. We expect approximately 1500 architects, companies, developers and policy officers, mainly from the UK, the Netherlands and Belgium/Germany.

I am Sener Kaya from Turkey. I am a lecturer in Ankara/Turkey. Also I am a PhD student in sociology at Sakarya University. My thesis subject is "The Transformation Revealed by Smart City Applications in Urban Identity: Amsterdam Example".  Because of my thesis, I want to come to the Amsterdam and do interviews with experts who work on smart city. There is no study on smart cities in the field of sociology in Turkey yet. If I finish my thesis successfully, it will be the first study. I would be very happy if you support me in this matter.

My thesis's main question is '' What kind of change/transformation do smart city applications reveal in urban identity?''.

Today, many smart city applications are made by local governments. What kind of a transformation do these studies reveal in the economic, physical and socio-cultural identity of the city that it has carried from the past to the present? How do these studies carried out by local governments respond to the social problems of individuals living in the city?These are some of the sub-questions in my research. When I decided to study this topic I noticed that smart city studies generally are about physical or economic dimensions, especially in Turkey. But In studies in Turkey, this issue has almost never been addressed with its social dimensions. Therefore, I decided that this issue should be studied. Because all the elements that make up the identity of the city should be taken into account in order for the studies to be put forward by the local governments to be holistic. This is why I chose the city of Amsterdam as an example. While the work done in the city of Amsterdam was done from the top to down in the past, the work done today is done from the bottom to up and the people are at the center. I would like to come to Amsterdam and have interviews with people and institutions working on this subject. I am waiting for good news from all of you. I hope someone else accept to work with me.

I am currently conducting research on climate adaptation strategies in London and Amsterdam for the university of Amsterdam. I am approaching this topic from a social justice lens, i.e. understanding how the city is incorporating social justice in its climate adaptation strategies and policies.

I am looking for inspiration on nature-based solutions in Amsterdam. I have a full day in Amsterdam the 6 th of October 2021, and I would love to visit locations having implemented nature-based solutions in impressive ways. I am curious about how Amsterdam has worked with urban biodiversity and how Amsterdam has implemented large-scale nature-based solutions, e.g. green corridors or other kinds of 'wild nature' in the city, for the benefit of people and other species :)

I hope you can help me with advices on where to go and whom to talk with?

My research project: Biocities of the future
The ambition is to develop initiatives that can help urban stakeholders integrate nature-based ideas and design strategies in urban development. The project includes prototyping a dialogue tool and testing if it could supplement the international certification tool DGNB Urban Districts.

I study how nature-based ideas integrate in urban development of today, and I identify some of the main drivers, paradoxes, consequences, and challenges, related to these integrations. The project focus is urban development inspired by nature’s ability to regenerate, through e.g., biomimicry and regenerative and biophilic design thinking.

My research is based on a cooperation between three Danish organisations:
City & Port - develop large scale urban areas in Copenhagen, DK
The Royal Danish Academy - Architecture, Design, Conservation
Bloxhub Science Forum - a nordic innovation hub for sustainable urbanization

In steden zonder kliko’s of afvalinzamelingspunten in de buurt is afval scheiden niet voor iedereen makkelijk te noemen. En in een klein appartement op vier hoog heb je nauwelijks plek voor alle benodigde prullenbakken. De Hogeschool van Amsterdam (HvA) doet met BASSTA onderzoek naar betere afvalscheiding door huishoudens in de stad.

Met deze studie kunnen we achterhalen hoe stedelijke huishoudens hun afval scheiden, waar het nog niet zo goed gaat en hoe we dit kunnen verbeteren met gedragsinterventies. Met een duidelijke uitleg hoe en waarom deze interventies werken, is het streven dat zoveel mogelijk Nederlandse stedelijke gemeenten hiermee aan de slag gaan. Met ongeveer 8 miljard kilo huishoudelijk afval per jaar in Nederland zorgt elk percentage betere scheiding voor enorme resultaten.

Dagboekstudie: Hoe goed scheid jij thuis je afval?

In een doe-boek worden de resultaten bijgehouden van leuke, korte opdrachten die iets zeggen over afvalgedrag. Hierin wordt ook aangegeven wat (on)prettig of (on)handig is rondom de afvalinzameling bij jou thuis. Dat is nuttige informatie voor de gemeente en afvalinzamelaar, die kunnen daarmee hun werk verbeteren.

Een vereiste is wel dat je op een plek woont waar je geen eigen kliko’s hebt, maar waar je wel afval kan scheiden door gebruik te maken van gezamenlijke voorzieningen zoals ondergrondse containers.

Geef je op en krijg eind mei het doe-boek thuisbezorgd. De onderzoekers zullen dan ook nog iets meer uitleg geven. Je mag zelf kiezen op welk moment je de opdrachten doet. I am addressing you all with a bit of a broad request, in the hopes of finding the right participants semi-organically. I am currently in the last months of my Master's in Global Business & Sustainability at the Rotterdam School of Management (RSM) and with that comes a very important thesis project.

For my thesis project, I decided to perform a case study on the Bajeskwartier Amsterdam and investigate Amsterdam's smart city approach, the influence this has had on Circular Economy Business Models, Refurbishment Business Models, etc.

For my investigation, I would like to interview participants that have particular knowledge on the aforementioned, or know of others who could possibly help me enrich my data and findings!

Today I start my dissertation project for Oxand. Together we will be working towards defining clearer goals for Gemeente Amsterdam's smart city objectives! We will approach this challenge by taking the #SmartCity principles and observing them through the lens of #SystemEngineering.
