Circular City
Requests

Moving from a linear to a circular economy means minimising the waste and pollution by reducing, recycling and reusing. The City of Amsterdam aims to redesign twenty product- or material chains. The implementation of material reuse strategies has the potential to create a value of €85 million per year within the construction sector and €150 million per year with more efficient organic residual streams. Amsterdam set up an innovation program on the circular economy; www.amsterdamsmartcity.com/circularamsterdam. By converting waste into electricity, urban heating and construction materials, the Amsterdam Electricity Company generates 900 kWh per 1000 kg of waste. 75% of the sewage system is separated for waste and rain water and the silt which remains after treating waste water is converted into natural gas. Share your innovative concepts and ideas on circular economy here.

We are looking for financial support (or subsidies) that can help us to launch this new IT service which offers a CO2 neutral delivery service. The suMMus platform and delivery services shall be available soon on mobile app and browser, expected pilot in Q1 2018. This is an ethical platform that provides CO2 neutral solution for the supply chain of biological and vegeterian food in the smart city of Amsterdam.

Our Ethical Fair trade platform which provides CO2 neutral delivery services shall also be used for fair trade products in next version (2019) where producer, retailer, consumer are facilitated with CO2 neutral transportation (delivery service using e-bikes & e-trickets).

We also like to give this application away for free to disaster zones where the need for logistics of food, shelter and additional nessesary products can be organized and delivered with a CO2 neutral transportation.

We are now implementing the first version for the food chain supply and want to launch this service in Amsterdam by Q1 2018. Cooperation with other projects of smart city is eventually welkome.

How to use urban greenhouses in a circular city?

At this moment, I am doing a research about the possibilities to use urban greenhouses to make cities more circular, for instance by exchanging heath. Do you have any ideas what we may do with an urban greenhouse in relation with waste streams, smart grids, water streams or other domains? Or do you know existing projects with greenhouses in cities (all over the world)? I am very curious about your ideas/knowledge. Feel free to contact me: erik.bos@wur.nl

Looking for synergies (partners, researcher, investors) to develop the project Sainthorto,
an interactive garden which thanks to Arduino and a good part of creativity, interacts with the environment producing a soundscape where the melody changes according to the environmental changes and the meteorological parameters shaping an always unique space. Sainthorto received already important acknowledgment and awards connected with the initiative where it took part like the Maker Faire Europe in Rome and the Architizer People Choice Award 2014 e 2015. You find the complete description of Sainthorto here: http://www.oflstudio.com/works/sainthorto/
We want to focus now on the development of applications that can improve the performance of Sainthorto and on the research of design solutions for urban spaces strongly connected with nature and empowered by technologies enabling dwellers to interact with plants.

Partners & Clients| To tackle urban design challenges in air, heat, water flow dynamics

Started in Delft, partnered with technical universities as TUE &TUD, involved in project with Den Haag Gemeente and international companies, we, CFD Alpha Tech, are a growing startup and currently looking for potential partners and clients for our service, Computational Fluid Dynamics to solve the challenges in Urban Design.

What kind of challenges?
With the technology and human capital in-house, we are able to create designs, analyze and evaluate in the field of flow dynamics, such as:

1. Air: A detailed of analysis on the quality of air and its flow dynamic through urban areas; the response of wind flow for building proposals or existing building dynamics;
2. Water: Analysis of rain water dynamics and evaluation on the flow routes.
3. Heat: Heat radiation patterns for building design; Urban Heat Island analysis and suggestions ( Urban Heat Island are areas in the city which are significantly higher than rural area due to human activity); Evaluation on outdoor setting to increase the indoor energy efficiency; Analysis whether the natural ventilation through a site is sufficient to mitigate heat and pollutant to achieve better human comfort in dense urban environment.
4. Ventilation Analysis: Analysis of various heating ventilation and air conditioning systems by inputting different diffuser types and locations, control schedules and supply air conditions.

What benefits does computational 3D modelling have in flow dynamics?
1. Time efficient
2. Possibility with different hypothetical scenario testing
3. Cost efficient
4. Accuracy

If you are interested, take a look on our website www.cfdalphatech.com. You can email me directly xjuan.zhang@gmx.com for inquiry. We wish all projects success for a more efficient economy, starting from Amsterdam!

During the minor Big Data student will be working on real-life cases of different companies. Your company can participate as well!

On September 2016 the Urban Analytics team will kick-off the Minor Programme Big Data at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. Besides theory and guest lectures from academic and industry experts, student teams will work on cases provided by different companies during the entire semester. On the one hand this gives student teams the opportunity to gain practical insights. On the other hand it is a unique opportunity for companies to have a team of students doing extensive data analyses for company.

If your company is interested in providing a case for a team of students to work on, do not hesitate to contact me!

Worried about the safety of your data? There is no need to! We have installed a secure server that allows access through a VPN connection to dedicated persons only. Besides the security of storage, the server contains all the necessary analysis tools so that students can work in the cloud to prevent data from being downloaded on local machines.

If you are interested in providing a case for the Minor Big Data or if you have questions regarding the programme of the participation please contact me.

Are there other organisations like SmartCity for low tech, non digital solutions

I love the idea of SmartCities. However, there are many solutions that are low tech, non digital that can also play a large role and in many cases are more easily spread and embraced by a wider market.
Are there any organisations that are like SmartCities but also support low tech solutions?

Natural-media is a sustainable form of outdoor advertising. Natural-media are a portfolio of techniques that use water, sand, plants, clay, chalk and milk paint to produce outdoor communication messages. Techniques that are not protected by IP, easy to master within 30 minutes and require low skills. They have a low impact on the environment and a high impact on the audience.

The outdoor media industry consumed over 350,000,000 square meters of paper in the EU last year. This is a one meter wide piece of paper that circles our planet 3.9 times each year. Most of it is burned as it can not be recycled. This figure does not include plastic films or vinyl used by the industry.

Outdoor media is now moving towards digital solutions - large tv screens. However, if for example, the Abris and Mupis in Amsterdam are replaced by these large tv screens, they will consume as much electricity as 8000 average Dutch homes. It is a digital solution with many benefits but it has many downsides.

Natural-media is very low tech and does not fit well with SmartCity. That's okay. So the question is where does it fit? Finding platforms that support low tech and no tech solutions is proving to be difficult in the age of digital everything.

If you have any ideas, know of any platforms or organisations that include low tech solutions, I would be highly appreciative if you could share them with me.

Is there anyone who can lend us a easy-to.move place during the weekend?

With my team, we are running a project about providing a safe place and professional guidance for people with high-stress levels, and identity search. We are planning to have a “prototyping weekend” on the 25 and 26 of June in a public space. Because of this, we are asking for help to get an easy-to-move cozy place (for example, a tent) that shelters us from the weather, provides privacy and is big enough for two standing adults.
