Circular City

Moving from a linear to a circular economy means minimising the waste and pollution by reducing, recycling and reusing. The City of Amsterdam aims to redesign twenty product- or material chains. The implementation of material reuse strategies has the potential to create a value of €85 million per year within the construction sector and €150 million per year with more efficient organic residual streams. Amsterdam set up an innovation program on the circular economy; www.amsterdamsmartcity.com/circularamsterdam. By converting waste into electricity, urban heating and construction materials, the Amsterdam Electricity Company generates 900 kWh per 1000 kg of waste. 75% of the sewage system is separated for waste and rain water and the silt which remains after treating waste water is converted into natural gas. Share your innovative concepts and ideas on circular economy here.

Designing the Circular Cities of the Future

Featured image

In celebration of Dutch Circular Economy Week (15-19 January), Metabolic is offering two Masterclasses from our suite of sustainability education programs at a discounted rate. On Wed 17th January, we invite you to take part in Designing the Circular Cities of the Future. (Note: spaces are limited)

Drawing on in-house expertise and local Amsterdam examples, this course will provide you with the skills and theories on how to design, develop and implement the circular cities of the future.
Geared towards international city officials, urban planners and utility providers, this Masterclass takes participants through the ins and outs of circular cities. While cities occupy only 3% of Earth's surface area, they house more than half of the world's population, consume about 75% of the global resources and emit 60-80% of greenhouse emissions. However, environmental challenges and urbanization opportunities are inherently connected. As cities are also the major engine for economic growth, they can lead the way towards a circular economy by transforming the built environment.

In this Masterclass, we provide a crash course on the principles and theory of urban metabolisms and circular city development. Relevant case studies such as De Ceuvel, Schoonschip and Circular Buiksloterham - projects that Metabolic has helped pioneer - will explore the design principles in practice.

What you leave with:
- Insider information of the common pitfalls, benefits, and barriers to transitioning cities to perform at high circularity, with lessons from De Ceuvel, Schoonschip and Circular Buiksloterham.
- A clear understanding of the nuances of local stakeholder management is necessary for making progress on a local circular economy.
- Reliable strategies to identify low-hanging fruit and design pilots that educate, build support, and accelerate the transition.

ABOUT METABOLIC:
Metabolic is a consulting and venture building company that uses systems to tackle major sustainability challenges. Our overarching mission is to transition the global economy to a fundamentally sustainable and circular state. We have developed our Masterclasses to take our work to a wider audience, enabling more people to act sustainably.

This Masterclass is part of a suite of educational programs run by Metabolic, providing you with the knowledge and skills to understand and act on the most fundamental principles of sustainability. Led by our expert consultants, the half-day class combines both theory and practical elements, backed up by live case studies, and you can start applying these concepts immediately. The sesssion is held at Metabolic Lab, our playground of applied sustainability at De Ceuvel.

The Absence of Measurement - Photography by Andy Essem (A Circular Model of Art Ownership)

Featured image

Humans love measuring things, for thousands of years we've measured all sorts of items and phenomena from dress sizes to earthquakes so we could better understand the world, and get more context, context that can multiple or reduce a variety of emotions like happiness and despair.

With this exposition I (Andy Essem) wanted to create work that brings attention to the ways in which our daily lives are presently measured and quantified beyond just numbers. And by then removing the item of measurement from my images, just leaving the orange void, I ask viewers what is the item of measurement that's been removed? And how would it's absence effect the every-day moment that I've captured in the image?

I hope this series will help viewers question the need to measure certain things in their life. The saying goes "Less is more" and maybe that's relevant for measurement too.

BRINGING THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY & CONSUMPTION TO THE ART WORLD

Amsterdam is pushing to become the world’s first fully circular city. So rather than make my work about the circular economy I wanted to see if I could make my work part of the circular economy by using the method of Product as a Service. This is a concept used by Phillips to provide light instead of lightbulbs to Schipol airport.

I'm trying to address the lifespan and environmental impact of my work by making it available using this new economic model. All of the work at my show will NOT be for sale, but you can pay €5 per month to enjoy my work at your home or office for as long as you like, at which point you can return the work to me and receive a refund on your deposit. Once all pieces are returned to me they will become the basis for my second series of work.

Roadmap Circular Land Tendering

Featured image

With the Roadmap Circular Land Tendering, Amsterdam developed an instrument with which a contractor can secure circular building. The municipality will use the Roadmap this year and early next year for the issue of residential building plots and a non-residential building plot. Later, the instrument will also be used for tenders in the area of transformation, renovation and demolition.

The Roadmap will be evaluated later on based on the practical experience with the tenders. The municipality wants to contribute to the development of a national standard for circular building. From the evaluation, the recommendation also emerges whether and to what extent circular tendering will become policy in Amsterdam.

The Roadmap has been composed by Metabolic and SGS Search, together with the municipality, market parties and external experts.
You can find the Roadmap here: https://www.amsterdam.nl/wonen-leefomgeving/duurzaam-amsterdam/amsterdam-circulair/wereldprimeur/
Later on, probably after the evaluation, it will be translated in English.

Amsterdam wins prestigious award for circular economy

Amsterdam has won the World Smart City Award for circular economy. The prize was awarded on Wednesday 15 November at the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona. With the award, the organization shows it’s appreciation for the pioneering Amsterdam program for circular economy and for the city’s efforts to develop policy for urban-level circular economics in several areas: local production of sustainable and seasonal food, local production of electricity, reduction of fuel consumption and the improvement of waste recycling.

The World Smart City Awards seek to reward pioneering projects, ideas and strategies that promote sustainable urban development around the globe. It is the first time the prize for circular economy was awarded and it is one of the seven categories of awards covering some of the key smart city issues. There were 309 entries from 58 countries around the world in the race.

Learning by doing

In 2015, Amsterdam was the first city in the world to investigate the chances of a circular economy. Research shows that a circular economy creates news businesses, has a positive economic impact and contributes directly to a sustainable society. Based on research and market consultation the City of Amsterdam started a circular program that consists of two complementary components: Amsterdam Circular, learning by doing, with 23 municipal projects, and the Circular Innovation program 2016-2018, with the most important innovations and developments in circularity of partners in the city. Key words of the programs are: ‘providing complete evidentiary’ and ‘learning by doing’. In the implementation, the municipality works closely together with circular entrepreneurs, for example through the Amsterdam Smart City network. . Early next year both of the programs will be evaluated. The recommendations resulting from this will given to the next College of Alderpersons of the City of Amsterdam.

Record number of visitors

The Smart City Expo World Congress is an annual recurring event that stimulates the exchange of knowledge and collaboration between cities throughout the world. The congress is a meeting place for governments, companies and research centers. The seventh edition, which takes place from 14 until 16 November in Barcelona, draws a record number of more than 700 cities, 600 exhibitors and 420 speakers from around the world. The last edition had more than 16.000 visitors. This year a large Dutch delegation will be present, consisting of municipalities - including Amsterdam – research institutions and large companies as well as promising innovation start ups and SMEs. This collaboration stems from the NL Smart City Strategy, which was offered to Prime Minister Rutte.

From plastic waste to new products – Looking for partners!

VanPlestik transforms plastic waste into new products! We’ve designed and build a giant 3D printer that enables us to make large sized products. The input of our 3D printer are small pieces of shredded plastic. The 3D printer transforms these small pieces into products like flowerpots, tables and chairs. The plastics that we use are 100% recycled.

We are looking for partners:
* Who have plastic waste streams of ABS, PS, PC or PLA.
* Who are interested in buying or distributing products of recycled plastic.

Do you have any of these plastic waste streams and do you want to transform them into products? Perfect! Than we can close the loop and work towards a more circular economy.

Interested?

The Road to Barcelona - The Interviews Part 6: RecyQ Zero Waste International

Featured image

The Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona is getting closer! Next week the Holland Pavilion will be filled with Dutch companies. One of them is the start-up RecyQ, working on the circular economy. We talked to Richard Severin.

How does RecyQ work?

Richard: ‘RecyQ makes more from waste by combining the hyperlocal bottom-up approach with technological possibilities. Our business is to get people to become more of waste problems and show them that waste separation is very useful. Together with our partners, amongst others the City of Amsterdam, we set up a zero waste platform for people in Amsterdam to separate waste more easily. People can separate paper, plastics, glass and textiles in our store or in containers. We measure the amount and in exchange people get a crypto token with which they can buy stuff in local stores. Besides that, we show people through our app how much CO2 they saved. We do not only make sure there is less waste, we also transform waste into new products. For local communities, we are closing the loop of raw materials.’

How do residents react?

‘The responses we get from citizens are very positive. People see the future of sustainability happening in their neighbourhoods. We show people how to contribute to a better world and tackle climate change hands on. It makes the circular economy more visible to residents. Of course, not everybody is willing to join us, but we focus on the people who are open to our ideas and care about the planet we leave behind to our children. They will tell their neighbours about it. This way we get a lot of positive attention! And of course it helps that people get a reward for separating waste, especially for those in a less fortune financial position.’

Do you have any plans to scale up?

‘Yes, it is very important to show other countries and cities the value case for combining waste separation and reusing materials with smart city technology! We were asked by a few parties to investigate whether our waste management and recycling project could work in the rest of the world as well. We already presented in New York City and at the Asian Development Bank. We are thinking of setting up feasibility studies for other cities. Then cities can choose which parts of our zero waste menu they want to take into development. In the Netherlands we already did such a study for Amsterdam Zuidoost, resulting in the venture Zero Waste Zuidoost and there are some opportunities in other Dutch cities. These are the bigger urban cities in the Netherlands because in the smaller areas the waste and recycling problem is not as big. The Netherlands ranks top 5 in Europe when it comes to waste separation, but bigger cities are not doing so well. Scaling up for us is also part of the reason why we are going to Barcelona!’

Investment Ready Program 2018 - APPLICATIONS CLOSED

Featured image

Looking for the right investor? Learn to think like one! Apply before 3 Dec 2017 at http://bit.ly/IRP2017. You could become of one the circular startups joining our 12 December selection event. Please note that this is a closed event for the selected startups.

WHY JOIN INVESTMENT READY?

The Investment Ready Program, whose main partner is ING Netherlands, is a five-month peer learning-based accelerator for circular economy solutions. It consists of 12 training days during which we guide you through a systematic review of your business model, strategy and team in order to help them craft a validated growth and investment plan.

This accelerator culminates in a Demo Day, during which the participants pitch to our network of purpose-driven impact investors and funds. Our alumni have collectively raised nearly 8.5 million euro.

What makes the program unique is that, instead of a jury, entrepreneurs themselves crown the program’s winner by ranking each other on fixed criteria. This proven, fully transparent peer-reviewing model generates an intensive learning process: participants engage in a productive feedback cycle and get in-depth knowledge of the other entrepreneurs’ ventures.

Our peer learning model has even helped several of the participants decide to start business collaborations with their peers upon the program’s completion.

WHAT RECENT INVESTMENT READY ALUMNI SAY:

Gert van Vugt, Co-founder and CEO, Sustainer Homes: "We were a building company when we started the Investment Ready Program but our coach helped us reorient towards being a ‘software’ business, which sells the design to contractors. This major pivot in our model made us focus on what we’re good at. And thanks to Investment Ready, we received financing from Triodos Bank. We also got the chance to connect to like-minded entrepreneurs, such as fellow participants MgAubel. We’re now exploring the opportunity to kickstart a modular office in their eco materials factory and simultaneously run an experiment for a bigger project."

Anja Cheriakova, Co-founder and CEO, BinBang: "We’re very happy to have been part of the Investment Ready Program, which is the best push when you’re in the scale-up phase. Thanks to our pitch at the Demo Day, we secured meetings with 3 investors and are well on our way to raise our target of €500,000. We also connected to entrepreneurs we are collaborating with, as each other’s customers. For instance, we’re helping fellow Investment Ready participants Kitchen Republic separate organic waste at their food startup incubator, and eco-materials enterprise MgAubel better deal with their office waste collection".
