I am conducting research to examine the extent to which social entrepreneurs leverage resources to meet the needs of the groups they set out to serve. I would be very interested to interview any entrepreneurs who set out to achieve social change.

De Metropoolregio Amsterdam (MRA) heeft zich in de afgelopen decennia ontpopt tot een hoogwaardige diensteneconomie met een belangrijke positie in internationale handelsnetwerken.

De verbondenheid van de MRA met de rest van de wereld via haven, luchthaven en een uitgebreid logistiek netwerk draagt daar aan bij, maar de wereld verandert snel. De regio staat voor een groot aantal opgaven en de druk op de ruimte wordt groter. Zorgen over onze brede welvaart, in het hier en nu, later en elders, nemen toe. Belangen en gemoederen lopen hierdoor soms hoog op. Dit staat een open dialoog over strategische keuzes die bepalend zijn voor de toekomst van de regio in de weg.

De internationale verbondenheid van de MRA blijft de komende decennia een belangrijke schakel in de metropolitane economie. Hoe dit zich ontwikkelt, is complex en vergt gesprek om tot (be)grip en meer samenwerking te komen.

In dit FutureLab staan drie vragen centraal:

Hoe ontwikkelt de hoogwaardige diensteneconomie van de Metropoolregio Amsterdam zich in vier toekomstscenario’s in 2040?

Op welke wijze is internationale connectiviteit ondersteunend in deze scenario’s?

Wat is er dan nodig om op korte en lange termijn te werken aan een slimme, groene en gezonde metropool?

FutureLabs: we ontwerpen samen de MRA in 2040 als slimme, groene en gezonde regio
Samen met een kennisnetwerk bestaande uit strategen, visionairs, disruptieve denkers en onderzoekers vanuit diverse organisaties voert de Amsterdam Economic Board in FutureLabs het gesprek over de belangrijke vraagstukken en schurende punten in de regio. We gaan vrijdenkend, constructief en los van belangen met elkaar in gesprek.

In deze ontwerplabs – waar de context geheel geschetst is in het licht van het jaar 2040 – geven we samen vorm aan innovatieve en al dan niet disruptieve ontwikkelingen die tegen die tijd een rol spelen. Met scenario’s en toekomstige wereldbeelden zoeken we samen naar antwoorden op de ontwerpopgave: Wat als de MRA in 2040 een groene, gezonde en slimme regio wordt, waarin internationale connectiviteit de economie zo goed mogelijk ondersteunt? Hieraan toegevoegd wordt de minstens zo belangrijke vraag: #hoedan?

Vorig jaar is Campus Groningen benoemd tot de snelst groeiende campus van Nederland. Inmiddels telt deze meer dan 200 organisaties, 20.000 banen en 50.000 studenten. Campus Groningen is een plek waar bedrijven en kennisinstellingen nauw samenwerken aan onderzoek, onderwijs en ondernemerschap. De samenwerkingen zijn vaak publiek-privaat ingestoken, hebben een regionaal accent en zijn gericht op groei. De thema's waarop wordt gefocust zijn Healthy Ageing, BioBased Economy en Energy.

WAT GAAN WE DOEN?
Tijdens de themasessie zal Campus Groningen meer vertellen over hoe het haar lukt om snel te groeien en toch de dynamiek vast te houden. Daarna gaan we aan de slag met het thema ‘bedrijven op de campus’. Want hoe zorg je ervoor dat organisaties zich op de campus willen vestigen? En sterker nog dat ze bijdragen aan het open innovatie ecosysteem? Dat ze uit hun gebouwen komen en samen gaan werken met het onderwijs? In de werksessie staan drie vragen centraal:
1. Hoe creëer je een "haal-en-breng"cultuur?
2. Hoe organiseer je facility sharing?
3. Hoe versnel je valorisatie en innovatie?
Samen willen we tot antwoorden komen. Dit gaan we doen in drie rondes. Bij elke ronde zal een gevestigde onderneming haar ervaringen delen en gaan we samen brainstormen. Tussen de rondes door verplaatsen ons naar verschillende locaties op de campus. Na de drie rondes nemen we de tijd om de gedeelde kennis samen te vatten en sluiten we af bij de gezellige Foodcourt.

As a decade of change has come to an end, what will the 2020s bring for cities?

Much of our work with city leaders and governments starts from an immediate pressing need–a housing crisis or a rise in knife crime–but so often moves onto preparing for the future trends that will change all of our lives, and cities as we know them.

We created a few weeks ago the platform StartSmart.city.

StartSmart.city is a special incubation/acceleration program specifically designed to support and invest in cities and startups that develop projects directly or indirectly related to smart cities to strengthen the social and economic fabric of the territory.

StartSmart.city was created with the goal of supporting and contributing to the progress of cities by attracting and retaining talent and entrepreneurs by providing different and alternative channels for access to investment and financing.

The speakers at this public event will talk about fungal threats and possible solutions.

'We are losing biodiversity on a massive scale due to emerging fungal infections', Professor Matthew Fisher states. He is one of three speakers at this public evening ‘Fungal Catastrophes’ taking place at the opening of a three days international mycological symposium ‘Rise of the Fungi’. The public evening coincides with the 50th International Earth Day focusing on the protection of our environment.

The speakers at this public event will talk about fungal threats and possible solutions. Amphibians are under severe threat by fungal diseases, caused by human intervention. Bat white nose syndrome is ‘burning across North America’, and at a global scale also plants, trees and crops die due to fungal infections. The number of fungal infections in humans are rising too, often accompied with the worrisome emergence of antifungal resistance.

The massive death in amphibians is mainly caused by humans dispersing fungi and by fungal resistance against fungicides. An additional factor is the scarcity of effective fungicides that can be safely used and, related to that, the widespread use of antifungals in agriculture and industry. Furthermore, fungi and humans are more related than one would think, which often hinders the development of new antifungal drugs.

Three speakers, three topics: Amphibians, Bananas, and Humans, all threatened by resistant fungi. Come and learn about this battle.

In our third Speculative Futures Amsterdam meetup, we will explore an ideation technique to create wearables of counter-surveillance culture. Prototypes will be scored according to design values and requirements, which we will explain in the introduction.

How can we in the neighboorhood, Slotervaart-Zuid, work together for more green and more nature?

This afternoon Kaskantine will present an overview of what we can do with the neighborhood to foster more greenery and nature in our environment.

We would like to discuss this topic with everyone who would like to work on conditions that are needed for this and which ideas could be attractive to all residents.

There will be a number of gardeners and architects with whom we can discuss our plans and who will also contribute with their own ideas.

One of the ideas is about the future "Riekerpark"; a part of the old sports complex, that will be located in the middle of the future neighborhood and which will become a park for the entire neighborhood with recreational opportunities.

We would like stimulate self-management and greater influence of citizens in the planning of this park. So we can all have better access to essential aspects of our neighborhood, such as non-commercial recreation and meeting space, clean water, spacious and attractive green areas etc..

Afterwards we can enjoy together a soup made by Casa Sofia!

Every first Wednesday of the month Sensemakers Amsterdam has a non-organized meetup in de Makerspace of OBA. During this evening you can start learning to work with Arduino, Raspberry or work on a prototype to 3Dprint etc.
Note that we don't provide a course, it is all about DIY, but there are always people you can collaborate with or you can find people to join your own projects! Currently we are collaborating in citizen science projects on Spacefarming and soundclassification.

On https://lucht.smartgraph.bi we visualise the measurements of air quality in 4 cities (others can be added) on our independent data platform, Smart Graph. The graphs on Apeldoorn and Dordrecht are real time.
We have screen shots on the situation on new year eve for the Fine dust (pm2,5 and pm10) and noise (decibel) , nice to see the peak and the huge differences. Apeldoorn can be seen on the LinkedIn page of Quant-Base.

Heb je een plan voor een buurtmoestuin, binnenstedelijke herontwikkeling of duurzame energieopwekking? Hoe zorg je dat dit plan gedragen gaat worden door belanghebbenden? Participatie! Maar hoe? NWO-SURF-project R-LINK presenteert Het Omgevingscanvas, voor iedereen die plannen maakt met een ruimtelijke impact.

Er zijn veel tools voor participatie. Die helpen een gemeente bijvoorbeeld om te bepalen aan wat voor steun een initiatief van bewoners behoefte heeft. Of om te bepalen welke mate van participatie gezien de fase van beleidsvorming en het onderwerp realistisch is. Ook zijn al veel procedures of werkvormen bedacht om mensen te betrekken. Denk aan een burgerpanel, focusgroep, e-participatie, praatcafé. Tools hebben echter minder aandacht voor de inhoud van het gesprek. Hoe zorg je dat in het gesprek dat naar boven komt wat je plan echt verrijkt en helder wordt welke verschillende waarden in het geding zijn met betrekking tot je project?

Het Omgevingscanvas
Over wat waardevol is valt te twisten. Dat gesprek moet worden gevoerd wil je in een proces niet voor verrassingen komen te staan (weerstand) én wil je de beloftes van participatie waarmaken. In het geval van gebiedsontwikkeling zitten waarden niet alleen in het project, maar juist ook in de plek. Het Omgevingscanvas helpt je om hier stapsgewijs zicht op te krijgen, met elkaar in gesprek te gaan en keuzes te maken.

Van terp tot zandrug en van drooglegging tot stadsontwikkeling – Nederland dankt zijn bestaan aan gebiedsontwikkeling. Om dit mogelijk te maken, is een nauwe samenwerking tussen vele partijen nodig. With temperatures of about 12 - 15 °C today, the Netherlands currently is not the "Winter Wonderland" you'd expect this time of the year. Usually, it would be around 6 °C.

Heavier rainfall and storms, higher temperatures, rising sea levels, and other climate change consequences impact urban areas worldwide, and cities are looking to adapt to the challenges involved.

Due to increasing urbanization, the number of people having to deal with challenges like the aforementioned is also growing. As a result, Amsterdam, like most cities, has to find solutions to limit the impact of climate change to ensure the quality of life and its resilience. The City of Amsterdam is aware of this and is committed to becoming climate-neutral by 2050.

To foster this ambitious goal and connect the objectives to the state-of-the-art knowledge from science, our Climate Resilient Cities research program works on a few different areas of expertise. In short, the entire urban air-water-soil-green system in and around Amsterdam is evaluated.

Commoning is met buurtbewoners lokale hulpbronnen beheren (land, water, energie, afval, cultuur, biodiversiteit, etc), omdat.... we het beter dan de overheid kunnen, omdat die hulpbronnen nu weglekken, omdat we buurtrechten hebben om die hulpbronnen duurzaam te gebruiken, omdat we mooie lokale kringlopen kunnen maken, omdat.... nou genoeg redenen!

De Kaskantine wordt lid, en hoopt dat dit de belangenorganisatie kan worden voor commoning initiatieven, en dat we kunnen werken aan voorwaarden waar lokaal beheer van hulpbronnen aan moeten voldoen. Kom je ook?
