Next week the Amsterdam Smart City team travels, together with a couple of our program partners, to the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona. This is THE leading event for cities in the world. Main goal of the event is to empower cities and collectivize urban innovation across the globe. We asked our partners why they will join the Dutch innovation mission to Barcelona. We introduce you….. Mark van Wees and Marije Poel of the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, who will present one of their most recent projects: ATELIER.

How is the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences contributing to the smart city?

The Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences serves as a knowledge hub for Amsterdam Smart City. We develop knowledge, research and education about the do’s and don’ts of smart city projects. Our goal is to accelerate and elevate your smart city project, as we unravel the ‘Amsterdam’ approach and the key elements of making an impact in Amsterdam’s innovative ecosystem. We’re involved in several local and European Smart City projects. We aim for a multi-disciplinary approach to smart city development: technology, business, design, citizens engagement, governance, urban planning and psychology.

What is your vision of a smart city?

We believe that smart city projects can create more impact – and more effective ecosystems – if we learn from each other and share the tools and skills needed to make our cities smarter. We are starting a H2020 Lighthouse project with focus on positive-energy-districts and demonstrations in Amsterdam (Buiksloterham) and Bilbao. In the project one of our tasks is cross-project and cross-city cooperation.

What are your plans for the Smart City Expo in Barcelona?

We would like to meet people who want to join our learning community. Are you interested in learning about scaling up, business models, citizen involvement or smart city governance? Let us know! We would really like to learn from other smart city learning platforms as well.

And more specifically, as University of Applied Sciences, we just joined the SCC01 community as partner of project ATELIER, leading the cooperation with European Innovation Partnership on Smart Cities and Communities-network. We therefore also want to reach out to other Horizon2020 SCC-EIP projects within the SCC community we can learn from and cooperate with.

Join us for the Inclusion edition of Young Impactmakers!

About this Event:

How can an entrepreneurial mindset make you thrive, when dealing with exclusion and change? This edition of Young Impactmakers we will dive into the topic of inclusion within public space. We will give the floor to young entrepreneurs who are dealing with change themselves and are working in the field of disability. They will share their story, their victories and challenges and we will dive collectively into the cases they come up with. In this way, we can collaborate and co-create inclusive solutions.
This is a great event if you want to meet new people, get inspired and want to contribute to an inclusive society.

What to expect:

Three speakers will share their story about how they dealt with change, started a business, and motivated others to thrive. How they look at inclusion and feeling excluded while living in the city. They will give a different perspective on how they deal with inclusion and how to thrive with an entrepreneurial mindset.

Speakers:

1. Bijan Lofti - The Disabledenabler. Bijan broke his neck in 2012 and change has been a constant factor in his life. His recovery was a roller-coaster ride of trial and hard errors, re-discovering his true self. He wrote a book, started businesses and is coaching other people with his Energy Management Compass. Get ready to get personal… Feeling excluded can have many roots. He dives deeper into this topic and wants to explore how you think feel and act in a world where exclusion and inclusion exist.

2. Josephine Rees - Ableamsterdam. Able Amsterdam provides information about wheelchair-friendly places in the Dutch capital. By sharing accessibility reviews, I hope to shatter disability stereotypes and encourage fellow mobility aid users to get the most out of this exciting city.

3. ONGEREMD - Esmee, Jan, Jackey, Rosa and Yara are searching for out-of-the-box solutions to remove the feeling of being limited as much as possible. The mission is therefore to minimize the difference between people with and without (mobility) limitations. For Ongeremd, the social dimension is at least as important as the practical dimension: the identity, the voice and the perception of the target group is their main focus point. ♿️📣

At our YIM event they will tell their story, how they focused on social design, making festivals more accessible and what they are challenged with making their business successful.

Happy #worldcitiesday! Although today the weather in Amsterdam is already getting a bit frosty, we'd like to take you back to last summer's heatwave and share the results of our weather balloon research.

World Cities Day recognizes the importance of exchanging knowledge and innovations between cities around the world in order to improve the lives of future generations in the city. The results of this research will contribute to form a new #blueprint to help design #climateresilient cities.

The measurements show that the heat of the city - the so-called #urbandome – still reaches a height of 120 meters at 10 PM. And will be even higher for many cities worldwide.
Launching weather balloons in the city is unique. The last time vertical weather profiles were collected was more than 50 years ago in New York. Back then a helicopter was used for this purpose. The results of this research will contribute to forming a new blueprint to help design #climateresilient cities.

ACTION is looking for new and ongoing citizen science projects related to any form of pollution in Europe and worldwide. Successful applicants will receive €20,000 to help deliver a six-month pilot with the help of the ACTION team. Do you want to grow your project’s impact? Apply to the ACTION Open Call!

No single lab, government or initiative can solve the environmental pollution problem on its own. It also needs citizen science projects to co-design, experiment with, and evaluate novel methodologies and resources. That is why ACTION supports citizen science projects working on pollution of all kinds, such as water, air or light pollution. IGB will be coordinating the ACTION Accelerator, which provides support to develop and grow a citizen science project. This includes intensive training in project design, mentoring for project pilots and beyond, and consultancy on a diverse range of common citizen science challenges such as data management.

Now, ACTION is seeking applications from new or ongoing citizen science projects working on pollution. The call is open till 31st October 2019. Successful applicants will receive 20,000 € to help deliver a six-month pilot with the support of the ACTION team. The funding can be spent on salaries, equipment, consumables, travel, subcontracting to other entities, and indirect expenditure (calculated as 25% of the total direct costs), in accordance with Horizon 2020 guidelines.

KNVI heeft als meerjarig thema ‘Smart Humanity’. Het definiëren en introduceren hiervan is een taak die KNVI heeft opgepakt vanaf januari 2018. De beroepsorganisatie heeft drie jaar uitgetrokken voor dit thema. Met diverse wetenschappers en practitioners wordt het begrip Smart Humanity verder uitgewerkt. KNVI publiceert tevens diverse boeken en artikelen over het onderwerp. En we organiseren met de beroepsgroep onze grote jaarevents, dit jaar voor de tweede keer!

Het thema Smart Humanity uitwerken gebeurt in een proces met practitioners en wetenschappers. Zij hebben verschillende beelden over de impact van technologie en de wisselwerking daarvan met de maatschappij:
• De een verwacht dat robots en algoritmes de wereld overnemen,
• de ander ziet een prachtige samensmelting van mens en cybernetica,
• terwijl weer anderen de mensheid via de inzet van technologie de vervuilde aarde zien terugbrengen naar een biologisch juiste balans.

In ieder scenario is het uitgangspunt dat de mensheid het aan zichzelf verplicht is, om het beste uit haar eigen uitvindingen te halen ten gunste van de menselijkheid.
Met andere woorden, informatieprofessionals máken technologie en helpen bij het implementeren van deze technologie. Ze zijn zowel makers als gebruikers als opleiders. Ze faciliteren andere mensen en organisaties in de toegang tot INFORMATIE. Met andere woorden: Informatieprofessionals bewaken de ethiek en het welzijn van de mensheid in relatie tot de inzet van technologie en de gevolgen van opeenvolgende disruptieve golven in de maatschappij. Deze bevindingen zijn in 5 thema’s samengevat die tijdens het event aan de orde komen. Tijdens Smart Humanity 2019 vindt gedurende de dag tal van kennis -, inspiratie – en creatiesessies plaats.

Wist je namelijk dat 62% van de mensen met een handicap zich eenzaam voelt? Dit begint al op jonge leeftijd. De organisatie streeft naar 'Geen kind zonder vriendjes' en zal je meenemen in hoe wij samen tot een inclusieve maatschappij kunnen komen.

De Knowledge Mile Trail komt eraan en alle donaties gaan naar het Gehandicapte Kind om ervoor te zorgen dat ook op de Knowledge Mile kinderen met (en zonder) handicap samen kunnen spelen!

KENNISUITWISSELING
We beginnen de meetup met een korte introductie van de Knowledge Mile (Park) en de bedrijfsinvesteringszone. Vervolgens zal directeur Henk-Willem meer vertellen over de organisatie en jullie rondleiden door één van de meest toegankelijke gebouwen van Amsterdam. Daarna is er alle tijd om nieuwe mensen te leren kennen en ideeën uit te wisselen.

The Moscow Tourist Information Support Centre has launched a new hotline for tourists in Moscow. Visitors to the Russian capital can now get 24/7 help via a short number - 122, as well as a ten-digit landline number - +7 (495) 122-01-11. Moscow Call Centre operators will advise on how to pay fares in the Metro and get to the airport, how to get from one location to another, and where to rent a bike. They will also provide information on interesting events and festivals taking place in Moscow and give out the addresses of museums, stadiums, parks and other attractions. In addition, hotline staff will assist tourists in the event of emergencies and advise on the addresses and opening hours of embassies, consulates and visa centres.

The service is currently provided in two languages: Russian and English. In future, Chinese, French, German and Spanish will also be available.

The hotline was created by the Moscow Tourism Committee together with the Moscow IT Department on the basis of the citywide Contact Centre.

''The number of tourists visiting Moscow is growing every year, so the Call Centre is an important step to get their feedback. The short number 122 is easy to remember and takes only a few seconds to dial on your mobile phone. Call Centre operators provide advice in Russian and English, which is vital given the growing number of foreign tourists in Moscow. To establish the Moscow Tourist Information Support Centre, we made use of our previous experience, including the hotline of the Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development during the 2018 FIFA World Cup,'' said the Committee for Tourism.

The short number 122 can be dialed from the mobile numbers of all Russian and foreign operators in Moscow and Moscow Region. The ten-digit city number +7 (495) 122-01-11 can be dialed from mobile and landline numbers abroad and in Russia. Calls to both numbers are charged at your operator's rates.

The hotline currently has a staff of 20, but this number will grow quickly as the Call Centre’s workload increases.

The citywide Call Centre has been operating in Moscow since 2011. It receives over 2.5 million calls each month. Approximately 90 percent of calls are received by hotlines popular with Muscovites: the Moscow Unified Information Service, the Unified Control Centre, the unified service for making doctor’s appointments, the Moscow Transport Call Centre and others. It is one of the most innovative call centres in the world, with around 40-45% of all enquiries processed by a robot which can answer simple questions and give updates on the status of applications and complaints. Using a robot reduces waiting times and eliminates the human factor.

Yuri Veerman
Yuri Veerman is een kunstenaar, ontwerper en performer die woont en werkt in Amsterdam. Door middel van posters, boeken, video's, websites, campagnes, vlaggen of performances vertelt Veerman ogenschijnlijk eenvoudige verhalen over een wereld die steeds complexer wordt. Veerman ziet zichzelf als een disruptor: iemand die bestaande normen en ideeën bevraagt door te spelen met onze verwachtingen.

In het voorjaar van 2019 maakte hij een poster met een portret van prins Bernhard van Oranje-Nassau, Van Vollenhoven, neef van koning Willem-Alexander, erop. ‘Nu in Amsterdam: de Prins met 349 huizen. Geen sprookje’, staat erop. Prins Bernhard is succesvol ondernemer en een grote speler op de Amsterdamse vastgoedmarkt. Eind 2017 onthulde het Het Parool dat Bernhard Jr. (mede)eigenaar is van 349 panden in Amsterdam, zowel privé als via bv’s. Daarmee is de prins een van de grootste investeerders op de hoofdstedelijke woningmarkt. En dat deugt niet, vindt Veerman: "Iemand van koninklijke bloede die de sociale infrastructuur gebruikt om geld te verdienen. Ik vind dat niet kunnen.”

Massih Hutak
Massih Hutak is muzikant en schrijver. In 2011 publiceerde hij de roman ‘Toen God nog in ons geloofde’. Daarnaast schreef hij onder andere voor de Volkskrant, Het Parool, Das Magazin, De Correspondent en is hij columnist (druktemaker) voor De Nieuws BV.

Vanaf 2012 gaf hij Nederlands en Maatschappijleer op een vmbo-school in Amsterdam-Noord. In 2016 stopte hij met zijn werk als leraar om zich te kunnen richten op zijn muziek. Datzelfde jaar kwam zijn eerste EP ‘ERROR’ uit.

Hutak werd door Het Parool uitgeroepen tot 1 van de 17 jonge creatieve talenten van 2017.

Cody Hochstenbach
Cody Hochstenbach is stadsgeograaf en postdoctoraal onderzoeker in stedelijke geografie aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam, gespecialiseerd in sociale en ruimtelijke ongelijkheden op de woningmarkt en in steden. In 2017 verdedigde hij zijn proefschrift ‘Inequaltiy in the gentrifying European city’ Cum Laude en ontving in 2019 de NWO VENI-beurs, een belangrijke beurs voor net gepromoveerde wetenschappers.

Najah Aouaki
Najah Aouaki is urban strateeg, econoom en creatief entrepreneur die streeft naar een inclusieve stad. In haar werk probeert ze toegankelijke programma’s te creëren voor meer diverse doelgroepen en probeert innovaties te implementeren op het gebied van ondernemerschap.

Met haar project ‘Javakwartier‘ zorgt ze ervoor dat “de komst van de ‘nieuwe bewoners’ de lokale winkeliers niet fataal wordt”.

Groen Kapitaal, het Noord Hollandse netwerkplatform om biodiversiteit te stimuleren omschreef onlangs onze missie. Naast de aandacht die wij vragen voor een duurzame voedselvoorziening willen we onze gasten op een laagdrempelige manier in aanraking laten komen met duurzame innovaties.

Join us as we explore ourselves as Amsterdammers and break-down this culture we have of expats vs. locals. We know Amsterdam is a city with freedom at it's heart, but how welcoming is it for our citizens?

The knowledge of food growing flows naturally within the generations in rural areas. The transfer of this green knowledge is mostly aborted in the city. Just enthusiasm is not enough for succesfull growing food in the city. Urban food growing starts with the transfer of green knowledge and green experience. A green cooperative learning experiment is started in the city of Arnhem (160.000 inhabitants) with the learning cooperative Arnhem Groen www.arnhemgroen.nl The bottom-up initiative YIMBY Yes-In-My-Back-Yard! shows the benefits of green cooperative learning in an urban environmont.

Amsterdam is in ongoing discussions with Barcelona and Dublin to work closer to emulate and scale up its successful Start-up in Residence programme.

The Dutch capital has just concluded its fourth edition of the 12-week programme which partners with start-ups to innovate to solve city challenges which can then be procured.

WAT DOET A LAB?
Stichting A Lab brengt achter de muren van het oude Shell laboratorium ruim 300 creatieve, innovatieve en maatschappelijke ondernemers samen. Het pand van 5000m2 is omgetoverd tot een Living Lab met inspirerende werkruimtes, gezamenlijke meeting rooms en event spaces. Als stichting maken ze vruchtbare crossovers mogelijk door een diverse community, een actief eventprogramma en partnerships. Met het samenbrengen van mensen uit verschillende sectoren wil A Lab impact maken op de buurt, de stad en de (internationale) omgeving. Kortom, A Lab is dé plek voor het creatieve experiment!

Op zondag 6 oktober is het weer tijd voor de Groenste Dag van Noord. Tussen 10-19 uur zetten groene initiatieven, ondernemers én kunstenaars door heel Noord de deuren open, zijn er workshops en wandelingen en ontmoet je elkaar tijdens de pitch ’n drinks van 17-19 uur bij de Verbroederij.

Groenste favorieten
In aanloop naar de Groenste Dag van Noord is er een fotowedstrijd op zoek naar groene lievelingsplekken in Noord. Wat is jouw favoriete groenste plek? Is het de bocht in het Noord-Hollands kanaal of een fijn stukje Vliegenbos? Of is het juist een plek waar de toekomst van duurzaam bouwen en high-tech energie opwekken zichtbaar wordt? Of is het de kringloopwinkel om de hoek? De mooiste, leukste, meest onverwachte inzendingen komen op de Groenste Kaart van Noord: een unieke set ansichtkaarten met ‘groetjes uit Noord’!

Groenste Dag

Op zondag 6 oktober komen de kaarten uit, tijdens de derde Groenste Dag van Noord. We stippelden een -voorlopig- groenste route voor je uit.

NoordOogst: 10-12 uur: masseren buitengewone varkens met stadsboer Johan.
Zonneplein: 11-12:30: groenste wandeling met Ton van Historisch Archief Tuindorp Oostzaan en, gelijktijdig, de Cleanup run met Denise en Audrey van VitaminD. Ook op het plein: groenste lunch bij Lokaal Spaanders.
Gewoonboot: 12-14 uur: Climate Drawdown: de grote klimaatoplossingen workshop met Sven en workshop drijvende mini-plantjes met Judith.
Buiksloterham: 13-15 uur: doe-het-zelf groen (bomen planten!) op de plek van het toekomstig high-tech grondstoffenstation van Waternet (Distelweg 90) waar ‘geel en zwart rioolwater’ gescheiden gaan worden, 14 uur: keukentafelgesprek met groene zelfbouwer Nathalie in de ‘Roestbak aan de Klap’.
Ceuvel: 14-16 uur: rondleiding in high-tech groen met Esther.
Noorderpark: 15-17 uur: bomenroute met Gert van IVN natuureducatie en schoffelles met Elien.
Kerstbomenbos: 16- 18 uur: soep met Nancy en samen met Onkruidenier Laura langs de voortuin van Noord.
Verbroederij: 17-19 uur: pitch ’n drinks met alle groene denkers en doeners in Noord, presentatie groenste kaart(en) en -niet te missen- spectaculaire afsluiting met Maestro Richard!

Achtergrond: van/voor Noord
Steeds meer mensen voelen zich betrokken bij groen en bij duurzaamheid. Ook In Amsterdam-Noord. Juist omdat lokale samenwerking en ontmoeting het verschil maakt, zijn een aantal geleden ondernemende Noorderlingen de kennisexpeditie de Duurzame 100 van Amsterdam-Noord gestart. De duurzame 100 van Noord is één groot netwerk dat uitgaat van de kracht van het kleine voor de ontwikkeling van het nieuwe, vooral op het gebied van duurzaamheid. Noorderlingen – zelfstandigen, ondernemers, supporters die eraan werken om van onderop Amsterdam-Noord nog mooier en groener te maken. Ieder op zijn eigen gebied. Samen organiseren zij voor de derde keer deze ‘Groenste Dag van Noord’. Woon of werk je in Noord? Kom langs en doe mee!

On the 17th of October in Almere, we welcome you to join us in our search for innovation and the impact of 5G on topics related to the Floriade: smart mobility, IoT/Smart City, Smart Farming, Drone delivery and 5G design. In a public-private partnership (Almere, Floriade and BTG), we have created a program which is designed around sharing the I-street strategy of the Floriade, sharing the 'digital city' strategy of Almere, learning of best practices of Amsterdam Smart City and taking a deep dive into the challenges of the Floriade.

Marineterrein Amsterdam Living Lab is een samenwerking tussen de partners AMS Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions, Amsterdam Smart City, Amsterdam Economic Board, NEMO Science Museum en Bureau Marineterrein Amsterdam. Het belangrijkste doel van Marineterrein Amsterdam Living Lab is het realiseren van opschaalbare innovaties die steden leefbaar maken en houden. Om dat te bereiken, brengen de partners hun expertise en netwerk op het gebied van onderzoek, innovatie, stedelijke ontwikkeling en experimenteren samen op deze unieke plek in Amsterdam.

Voor het komende half jaar (september 2019 - maart 2020, mogelijk met uitloop) zoeken we een gedreven operations officer die het Living Lab operationeel gaat maken, aanvragen toetst, start met het runnen van de experimenten en zorgt voor verdere ontwikkeling van het Living Lab in samenwerking met de partners.

'Urban Nature Amsterdam' is de allereerste kaart die uitsluitend alle groene en blauwe plekken in Amsterdam laat zien. Het unieke product is speciaal ontworpen voor bewoners en bezoekers om de stedelijke natuur en het rijke landschap in de omgeving beter te leren waarderen. De grote papieren kaart toont aan hoe groen en blauw Amsterdam kleurt: de parken, (binnen)tuinen, plantsoenen, natuurspeeltuinen, sportvelden, grachten, meren, polders en bossen. De achterzijde is gebruikt als ‘call to action’: ontdek de natuur, draag bij en leer!

Er wonen op dit moment ruim 863.000 mensen in Amsterdam. In 2040 zijn dat er naar verwachting één miljoen. Deze aanwas vergt veel van de bestaande, vaak verouderde, infrastructuur. Initiatiefnemer Ioana Biris: “De hamvraag is hoe het stadsbestuur een goede balans weet te vinden tussen de gewenste groei en het welzijn van alle mensen die hier (komen) wonen en werken? Hoe zorgen we ervoor dat de kwaliteit van de stedelijke natuur ook in de toekomst blijft behouden? Inwoners, beleidsmakers, projectontwikkelaars, financiers, studenten en het bedrijfsleven zullen samen moeten bouwen aan een meer groene en meer gezonde stad. Een veerkrachtige stad waar de natuur als inspiratiebron dient.”

De kaart 'Urban Nature Amsterdam' is een ode van de makers aan Amsterdam. Deze unieke kaart, waar het grijs van de gebouwen en wegen niet op wordt aangegeven, biedt een nieuw perspectief op de stad. Een waardevol stadslandschap dat bewoners delen met ruim 10.000 soorten flora en fauna in Amsterdam.

Bijna 150 particulieren, initiatieven, instellingen en bedrijven hebben via een crowdfunding actie de realisatie van Urban Nature Amsterdam gesteund. De drie belangrijkste partners zijn Gemeente Amsterdam, Waterschap Amstel, Gooi en Vecht en Recreatie Noord-Holland. Staatsbosbeheer steunde de ontwikkeling van een speciaal instrument waarmee je kunt zien welke groene en blauwe plekken in de nabije omgeving van je voordeur of werkplek zijn te vinden. De makers nodigen iedereen uit om Amsterdam met de kaart in de hand te ontdekken; en te leven, spelen, werken, leren en genieten van de natuur.
