Digital City

People get more connected and technology becomes part of our daily life. Between 2014 and 2015 there was a 27% growth of internet traffic in Amsterdam. Eleven out of fifteen Trans-Atlantic data cables are connected with or go through Amsterdam and the AMS-IX is the second largest internet exchange point in the world. In 2016 Amsterdam was ranked second in the European Digital City Index. Do you work on a smarter city? Share your technologies here!

LoRa Smart Lighting + Lightwell

Featured image

The Marineterrein was keen on developing a living lab for new technology and smart city use-cases. Lightwell helped to realize this ambition by combining its Friso Kramer public lighting fixtures with the most promising Smart Lighting technology available: LoRa.
The LoRa technology is a point-to-point internet of things communication system that uses the free available 868mhz frequency. At the Marineterrein Lightwell and technology partner Ziut decided to use a private (non telecom) network to secure its open-source character but also to guarantee the lifespan of the system. This is interesting for large metropolitan area's if they have smart city ambitions because the availably of the network is more secure if the City runs its own network and isn't solely dependent on a network-provider like a telecom-company. LoRa technology is therefore a future-proof system to which al kinds of features (censoring, lighting etc.) can be added.
The whole system set-up is on show at the Marineterrein. The 42 fixture can't be missed because of the beauty of the design by Friso Kramer.
During the We Make the City event 20-24 June 2018 tours will be held to explain the system functionalities.

Workshop Event - Green ICT in practice

Featured image

>> The Workshop: The half-day stimulating, yet intensive workshop will be divided into three different parts.

The first part of the day will be dedicated to policy and public administration interventions on national policies and programmes and a state of the art of measures that are being taken in Green ICT in the region. Renowned players of the region will provide interventions and allow the audience to see what priorities are available as well as opportunities. The results will feed into the Policy roadmap report that ICTFOOTPRINT.eu will deliver at the end of the project that can serve to deliver some recommendations to policies on future topics and priorities that need further research.

The second part of the workshop will be offered to showcase best practices from the ICTFOOOTPRINT.eu marketplace of reputable Green ICT tools and services available to help companies become better in ICT energy efficiency. This will lead to a Q&A open discussion with members of ICTFOOTPRINT’s.eu esteemed External Advisory Group (EAG) members who can provide thought-provoking insights and questions to the panellists pitching their products and services.

The final part of the workshop will be an interactive training session with the participants who will complete the ICTFOOTPRINT.eu Self-Assessment Organization tool accessed here: http://sat-o.ictfootprint.eu/ and will provide user experience feedback with our experts. As the consortium has identified a series of success stories on its marketplace – they will also be invited to contribute actively to the workshop and provide an overview of their solutions on offer.

Lecture by Adam Frampton

Insights from New York-based architect and co-author 'Cities Without Ground'.

After ten years of economic crisis, Amsterdam is flourishing. Real estate prices go through the roof an all major museums have been renovated and tourists from over the world are visiting the city in ever larger numbers. What can Amsterdam learn from cities like New York, Paris, Shanghai or Istanbul? The Amsterdam Agenda, a lecture series by the Academy of Architecture, invites special guests with international perspectives to present their best practices. This first evening, architect Adam Frampton, the Principal of Only If, will share his knowledge and present several projects.

Adam Frampton
This evening Adam Frampton will discuss his research and design work on several projects, including ‘Irregular Development’ – small irregular plots in New York City that are often overlooked, but that are made suitable for residential development. How could this approach offer an alternative to what is currently being done in the Netherlands?

Architect Adam Frampton is the Principal of Only If, a New York City-based design practice for architecture and urbanism. He earned a degree in architecture at Princeton University before working in Rotterdam and Hong Kong for OMA; leading projects in China, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia and India; and co-authoring a book on Hong Kong urbanism. Registered to practice in both the Netherlands and the US, Frampton opened Only If in 2013. Only If is currently engaged in a range of projects, from the design of a single-family housing prototype to an 84-unit senior affordable residential project, to larger-scale urban planning, research, and speculation. Only If has been recognized as part of the 2018 AIANY New Practices New York, PIN-UP’s Magazine’s New Power Generation (2017), and the World Interior News’ 2016 Emerging Interior Practice of the Year.

Approaching any project, Only If seeks to focus on the fundamental questions and potentials. The ambition of this process is to create clarity and distil simplicity within often-complex circumstances and constraints. They believe in the potential of simple shapes and geometries—like circles and squares—framing and shaping underlying uncertainties and complexities.

The Amsterdam Agenda
This year, the cities long-awaited north-to-south subway will open, just as a new direct Eurostar train to London. Amsterdam seems to be attractive for investors, entrepreneurs and expats alike. To keep up with the growth, the municipality has announced plans for the development of Haven-Stad (Harbour City), a large new urban district.

Yet, there is also a lot of discussion about the way Amsterdam is developing. Urban development seems to be mainly profit-driven, housing corporations are having difficulties developing new housing stock and their waiting lists have grown to unacceptable lengths. And plans to make the city more energy sustainable are not yet producing the expected results. Is Amsterdam still accessible for all income groups? What is the quality of the urban housing stock? Has the city become merely an object for investors? Metropolises around the globe are struggling with accessibility, tourism, multi-culturalism and sustainability. What can we learn from these other cities? The Amsterdam Agenda invites different speakers to address subjects like Accessibility, Tech and Identity.

Water is essential for plant growth. That’s why the blue-green roof features an 85 mm-high Permavoid hollow drainage layer that stores rainwater directly under the planted layer. These Permavoid units have special fibre cylinders that use the capillary effect to provide the plants with water during dry spells. This creates natural irrigation without using pumps, hoses, or energy: just like in nature.

Smart cities and digitization: join the BIM Loket Dialogue Table on 16 February

Featured image

The BIM Loket is organizing a Dialogue Table on the theme of Smart Cities and the disruptive effect of digitization in construction on 16 February. For this meeting, we also invited the Baanbrekers, a transition network in the construction industry. We are guests at Gemeente Amsterdam Ingenieursbureau. Cross-thinkers, creatives and innovators are cordially invited to join! Participation is free. Event in Dutch!

Smart cities and digitization: opportunities from disruption
Large cities in the Netherlands are confronted with global issues such as urbanization, climate change, labor participation, digitization, mobility and the depletion of raw materials. The pressure on cities to find solutions for these major shifts is increasing rapidly. In January last year, 140 stakeholders presented a joint vision on the direction of smart cities in the Netherlands. The City of Amsterdam fulfills a role as a driver of innovation in the city and in the region. What challenges does she face? Amsterdam can not do this alone!

In addition, the developments in - and especially outside - the construction sector are not standing still. The realization of smart cities is partly dependent on digitization and computerization, including Building Information Management (BIM) and the asset management of the future. Which developments are playing here, including internationally? There are signs of disruption in construction, comparable to Uber and Airbnb, for example by parties such as Google, Amazon and IKEA. What opportunities does this offer and how can we respond to this in concrete terms? How can smart cities increase the urgency of this?

Brazil: City of Sorocaba is searching for Smart City collaboration

Beginning of this month I’ve visited the Town Hall of Sorocaba in Brazil. The secretaries of urban planning Mrs. Zacareli and Mr. Fioravante informed me about their current projects and ambitions around Smart City. They also shared their vision to make the municipality more sustainable and pleasant for its inhabitants. Sorocaba is looking for international collaborations.

The city of Sorocaba in the São Paulo state has 700.000 inhabitants, the metropolitan area of Sorocaba consists of 27 municipalities with a total of more than 2 million inhabitants. The industrial park boasts more than 25 million square meters and over 1,600 industries.

The city is foreseeing a growth of the municipality’s service package due to the growing metropolitan area of Sorocaba and the influx of inhabitants coming from São Paulo. Sorocaba embraces a smarter and more sustainable approach to cope with the future urban challenges.

With the recently started IPLASO ( Institute for Planning of Sorocaba ) the municipality is making a start to coordinate urban projects and unite stakeholders to share visions and implement plans.

In general, the municipality is looking for knowledge, best practices, guidance and support with enrolling their Smart City vision and sustainable urban projects within IPLASO. More specific, Sorocaba is looking for solutions to use their data better and to improve their health and municipal services.

In the Netherlands I’m supporting Sorocaba with their plans. Who wants to join?

Feel free to contact me via +31617456045 or christian.fasting@brazilservices.nl

It will be my pleasure to share my experiences in Sorocaba and Brazil with you.

Kind regards, Christian Fasting.

What happens to cities and citizens when smart technologies start making their own decisions? With a.o. Carlo Ratti.

Imagine a city in which traffic lights autonomously organise the mobility flows in a city, where dynamic infrastructures know where and when to create temporary bridges during crowded events, and where smart grids independently distribute renewable energy sources. During this session of AMS Science for the City, we look at the future of our increasingly smart urban spaces. Together with special guest and AMS PI Carlo Ratti (MIT Senseable City Lab), we dive into the challenges, possibilities and prospects of senseable and autonomous cities.
