Recap: Smart Data, Smart City #4 - Affordable and Sustainable Housing
In the Smart City, citizens, data and technology are the biggest enablers. That is why Amsterdam Smart City and Datalab joined forces to organize six ‘Smart Data, Smart City’ events in 2017. On the 21st of September, event number four took place. Curious about the content or feel like continuing the discussion? Read on!
This event focused on one of the Amsterdam Smart City projects that aims to make housing in Amsterdam more sustainable. Leading questions on this night were: how can data support the transition towards sustainable housing? What other purpose could that data serve? Where do challenges exist and what is the role of residents in this transition?
Marc Schoneveld, representative of the Datalab Amsterdam, presented several internet sources where you can find data. He noticed that not a lot of sources covered the energy-theme. With this statement, the starting point of the discussion was set.
Jasper Kol, initiator of Woonconnect020, gathers around a network of energy suppliers, energy advisors and contractors to create a simple, accessible web-based application that enables consumers to improve the sustainability of their homes within three mouse-clicks. His pitch and enthusiasm excited the audience. It also raised some ethical questions.
Because; why is it important to have data? Is it that important to have everything measured before you start isolating or putting solar panels on rooftops? Some initial questions from the audience, answered by Melchior Kanyemesha from Amsterdam Smart City.
Look at your street. All houses are made up from brick and mortar, all contain windows, front doors, a roof. Look closer, and you see differences in age, window size, ceiling heights et cetera. Gathering these characteristics creates a suitable environment for cooperation, whereby multiple houses can be made more sustainable simultaneously if they share similarities. For instance, when knowing 50.000 windows have the same dimensions, price arrangements can be made to efficiently swap single to double glazed windows.
Call to action
We need to collect characteristics of houses in Amsterdam, but to what extent? And perhaps more importantly, who needs to collect this data and for what purpose? We invited Ruurd Priester, research fellow at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (HvA) to moderate a discussion with an expert panel of four to discuss these questions.
The panel consisted of Pepijn Post from The Sustainables, Sanne Hettinga from Geodan, Tim van Kempen from BackHOOM and Paco de Mulder from BuildingID. Their companies are searching for a central database containing detailed information about houses so that the current tailored approach to improve sustainability can be upgraded to a collectivistic approach.
What followed was a heated debate around the practical to do’s and tools that need to be developed. Within this debate, the panel shared its experience in the field and interaction with citizens, causing the discussion to focus more about the role of citizens (instead of the role of data).
This brought the audience to the centre of attention. Some praised the approach that gathers as much data as possible: being able to scan a house and know exactly what solution would fit best. To some, this approach was too technical, ignoring the social context of implementation. Someone referred to a neighbourhood-wide sustainability project in Leusden, whereby a large group of homeowners agreed to invest in sustainable solutions. Striking was the main incentive for people to improve their houses. People do not improve sustainability for financial, ecological or ideological reasons. People were not per se convinced by spread-sheet data. People do it because ‘the neighbours have one too’. This trickle-down approach should be carried out more according to some in the audience.
Continue the discussion
Since a lot of topics were discussed, there simply was not enough time to conclude certain debates. Perhaps that is why many people stayed afterwards for a drink. For those who want to make any remarks on the discussion topics, we invite you to place a comment below answering one of these questions:
- What does your government need to do to accelerate the uptake of sustainable solutions?
- What role does the private sector need to take?
- How can we accurately gather data without violating privacy laws?
- Do you think the ambition to become disconnected from the gas-grid is too ambitious/not ambitious enough?
To conclude, below are some links that were brought up during the session to check at home;

Still some work to do for us in Amsterdam
The transition in Amsterdam to renewable energy is slowing down. Last year, the growth of the green energy generated in Amsterdam has almost come to a halt. Let's work together on a sustainable city and get some results.
Theaterfestival de Parade on 100% renewable energy in Amsterdam
This august, theaterfestival de Parade will say goodbye to diesel-powered generators, and will switch to renewable energy! A fully renewable energy supply is realized by making use of new fixed power supply on the grid. With this measure, more than 100 metric tonnes of CO2 emmissions will be prevented each year, when De Parade sets foot in the Martin Luther Kingpark in Amsterdam Zuid.
This project is not only unique in the fact that de Parade is the first large festival in Amsterdam which does not rely on diesel generators. Very rare is the fact that the initiative lies with the organization of de Parade itself. This shows that a bottom-up approach can be very effective in making festivals more renewable, on top of a financially attractive solution!
Nils Mevius of Theaterfestival de Parade says: “I had expected to reach more results in five year in trying to organize green energy for de Parade. The number of stakeholders showed to be bigger, and the process slower than expected. Also the underlying technology showed to be more complex than we initially thought. Locol managed to complete this project in 7 (!) months, including help with financing. They are knowledgeable, efficient, and very kind. If had few cooperations with external parties as pleasant as this one, and rarely with such a high yield, both in reaching our sustainable goals and lowering cost.”

Towards a city without gas - Debate Pakhuis de Zwijger
The way we use energy to heat and cook our homes is changing on a large scale. The phase out of gas is about more than money and technology. It affects people in their home situation and is therefore a matter of feeling and acceptance. What do residents actually know about the heat transition and the impact that it will have on their home? And what do they think about it? In what way can we take that into account when phasing out gas from Amsterdam.
In the 39th episode of ‘The Circular City’ Nuon and Pakhuis de Zwijger are going to Amsterdam's neighborhoods: how do residents move on to a city without natural gas?
We let residents speak. How do they think about the climate, energy, heat transitions and the phase out of gas? What do they know about it? Does the subject interest them? Are they active in being sustainable themselves?
The answers and experiences of the residents will form the base for some edgy statements we will be discussing in Pakhuis de Zwijger on 5 July. Please join us! The program will start at 19:30

Utrecht Jaarbeurs adds huge Tesla battery to power parked electric cars
As many visitors arrive and leave at the Jaarbeurs at the same times, the charging sessions are also taking place at the same time. To avoid stress on the local electricity grid and to avoid costs to install a connection with a larger capacity, a battery will be installed this summer.

Why you shouldn’t settle for less at your (sustainable?) office
You spend a large portion of your live at work each day. Providing a healthy and sustainable work environment helps to promote productivity and create a culture that values the health of your surroundings. Anyone who has sweated at their desk through the summer or suffered headaches because of garish office strip-lighting will agree!
Integrating safety and health into sustainability provides an oppurtinity to better protect your employees and achieve a truly sustainable organization.
Most companies see direct benefits from their investment in a sustainable workplace in terms of cost savings and energy efficiency. But what do you achieve beyond this point?
PRODUCTIVITY AND MOTIVATION
Integrating a good ventilated, bright workplace results in a more vitale and more productive workforce. If you are not completely convinced about the sustainability benefits, just take a look at the numbers!
Optimizing your work environment increases productivity by an average of 10 percent. Reasons for these numbers are that people are healthier when they work in a nice, good ventilated environment.
Bad office conditions have direct and indirect effects on productivity. Draughts and noise can cause your coworkers to tire and become less productive. It can also engender dissatisfaction, again affecting productivity. Half of the office workers complain of overheating in the summer and stale, musty indoor air!
Indirect effects entail health problems and illnesses, caused by an interplay of pollutants arising form people and substances released from the office environment. This occurrence is more common than expected; around 20% of office staff experience headaches, sore eyes or an irritated nose or throat on a daily or weekly basis that can be contributed to a bad indoor climate.
ENERGY
Most people know we should switch to sustainable energy – and energy sufficiency. But, how is this arranged at your office building? Self-induced energy is not only cheaper in the long run, but also increases awareness throughout your organziation – and even beyond! There are many options for you as a company to generate sustainable energy. Solar energy for instance is becoming cheaper and cheaper..
The public dilemma might be accountable for the lack of awareness or willingness to change. But raising awareness is important. Especially considering the lack of awareness or willingness of some key players in business.
Take a look at the quote of Ben van Beurden, director of Shell:
“If we want to set the limit of global warming on 2 degrees, we must reduce carbon emissions to zero by 2070. That is an ambitious goal for society, but feasible I think. If we want to limit it to 1.5 degrees, we must eliminate carbon emissions by 2050. To me, that seems to be wishful thinking.”
Let’s be optimistic and prove him wrong. Shall we?
WASTE MANAGEMENT
We live in a massive consumption society. This society leads to large amounts of consumable goods that are consumed with a short life span and are quickly thrown away. This is why recycling waste at the office goes further than separating your banana peel from your napkin when you throw it away. It is about awareness creation of the use of materials.
Do you really need to print that document, or keep your lunch in plastic bags?
COMPLIANT WITH REGULATIONS
Wheter or not you have a drive to make your office more sustainable, you have to be compliant with rules and regulations set by the government. Positive incentives are given to make offices more sustainable, think about subsidies – MIA, EIA or Green Deals. If you have the ambition and drive to be ready for the future and subsequently future regulations, we can help you implement these regulations today.
We at Einstein & Jones are here to help to transform your office. No need to build a whole new building, just improving the one you already have.
Battery storage: The next disruptive technology in the power sector
Interesting read on locally generated and stored energy. An insight that the Amsterdam Arena started a few month ago through a collaboration with Nissan to reuse Nissan Leaf batteries in huge stacks to store energy partly generated by the solar panels on the roof of our Smart Stadium.
Intelligent solutions for Smart Cities
There are already circular economy and smart city solutions being implemented all around, check out how Stimergy that recycles the heat generated by data centers will help the city of Paris to reduce their carbon footprint by 45 tons a year and save 250MWh of energy

More and more hospitals switch to district heating
