HEAT

Featured image

HEAT is the number one solution to the prolonged decision-making processes typically involved in energy issues. HEAT allows parties to co-design and develop a heating grid.

Quick: HEAT provides instant feedback about your own actions and those of your partners, providing an immediate and clear understanding of your and their goals and interests, funding, and the sustainability of the design.

Effective: Any range of scenarios and designs can be tested without a problem using HEAT. Decision-making is speeded up and projects are implemented quicker.

Realistic: Realistic simulations based on real data and smart mathematical models. 3D simulations of the city or neighbourhood that you and your partners wish to make greener.

Missie KAREL

Smart City-ready solar street lights in Tilburg

Featured image

In the night of October 3rd, city councillor Mario Jacobs officially revealed two very special street lights in the city of Tilburg, the Netherlands. The two Soluxio solar light posts are the first off-grid solar light poles in Tilburg: a city that's one step closer to the future of smart cities.

Street lighting will play an important role in the cities of the future. A light post that generates its own energy can serve as a charging station for smartphones, notebooks or electrical vehicles or bikes. “In the future of the smart city, street lights will regulate traffic and measure air quality” says Lennert van den Berg, founder of FlexSol Solutions. The two Soluxio solar street lights could therefore play an important role in the city of Tilburg.

Like all Soluxios, the two solar street lights in Tilburg are connected to the internet wirelessly. The software and lighting scheme will receive updates through the online management platform. The masts indicate when maintenance is due automatically. Other smart city applications such as cameras or air quality sensors can be integrated in the future using the integrated data bus, giving the municipality maximum flexibility. The Soluxio is truly sustainable and ready for the future.

Herman's Smart Grids

Herman can switch energy produced by solar panels to a specific household connected to it. Herman's Smart Grid enables it to distribute energy to a connected storage device as well. And Herman's Smart Grid can switch on or off or even manage household appliances to balance energy produced and energy used. And it can do so several times a day.

CODALoop Amsterdam

Featured image

CODALoop is a EU-funded research project and a joint venture of different academic and non-academic partners in three countries, The Netherlands, Austria and Turkey and four cities, Amsterdam, Graz, Leibnitz and Istanbul. CODALoop Amsterdam is active in two neighborhoods, the Indische Buurt and Buiksloterham.

There is a tremendous urgency to reduce energy consumption to guarantee quality of life for future generations. In the light of the weak results of behavioral approaches and top-down investments on infrastructures for energy efficiency, such as grid management, smart meters and the like, innovative approaches to tackle this issue are required. CODALoop Amsterdam is a research project which uses a sociological approach and explores the extent to which social interactions, at the level of the neighborhood, are able to activate ‘energy consciousness’.

PROBLEM / OPPORTUNITY

Brazilian photovoltaic market has more than 1,500 companies and customers wait a long time to quote prices. They think photovoltaic prices are high due to lack of information. Anyway, it´s a continuously growing market (between 70% and 85% per year).

SOLUTION / VALUE PROPOSITION

SUNLAB´s system facilitate and automate the acquisition of solar generation by anyone, in their place, tracking the best technology and price conditions, preferably provided by affiliated companies near customer´s residence.

BUSINESS MODEL

Our product consists on an electronic sales system (web-based software - running in PC or mobile devices) that offers the client an all-in-one experience since simulating until purchasing a photovoltaic generator, suitable for home and small business use. The advantage of using this service is that the costumer will not need to look for the best solar energy solution in many places, to get the best price. The software will perform all the steps in this process, quickly and safely.

CO2 Smart Grid

How will we provide food to growing cities with a shrinking amount of agricultural land? How can we provide enough fresh water for everyone? Just as relevant: how should we make the transfer to a safe, clean and reliable energy supply?

How will we provide food to growing cities with a shrinking amount of agricultural land? How can we provide enough fresh water for everyone? Just as relevant: how should we make the transfer to a safe, clean and reliable energy supply?

The large amount of CO2 put into the atmosphere because of human activity causes climate change, threatening our quality of life and security and that of future generations. This has been acknowledged by (inter)national governments – for instance at the COP21 in Paris in 2015 -; They pledge large emission reductions. In the Netherlands, we aim for a reduction of 85-95 percent by the year 2050.

So, we have to reduce CO2 by expansive measures, and everyone should feel the responsibility to work on this challenge as effectively as possible. However, perceiving this issue as only a problem, by incrementally reducing CO2, will not lead to a satisfying end result. We should instead approach this as a huge opportunity for the Dutch economy. Our statement?

CO2 IS NOT ONLY A POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS WASTE MATERIAL, IT IS ALSO A IMPORTANT ASSET FOR THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY.

What is the situation?

2361402328.png

CO2 is a raw material in for instance the horticulture and the chemical industry. This is a business case with growth potential.

What do we want to do?

3227563483.png

Use CO2 in a smart way so we can reduce the use of raw materials of fossil origin.
