Solar and wind energy yes! But don't forget the sustainable warm and cold water network
Last week I wrote about the Energy Roadmap for Amsterdam (http://smartcityhub.com/energy/the-forthcoming-energy-revolution-in-amsterdam/). The extension of the warm and cold water network received a lot of attention, but the target - at least 75 km new underground pipes every year - is quite a challenge. A masterplan for all future digging into the ground is necessary. In my newest blogpost I dig into the need for renewable district energy. Local elections: how to get rid of natural gas? Part 1
Amsterdam wants to get rid of natural gas in 2050. What are the most important decisions we have to take to make this ambition a reality, according to local politicians?
Local elections coming up! On the 21st of March, we can vote for our local government again. In three videos, Amsterdam Smart City asks politicians from the Amsterdam city council about their views on important topics. Videos in Dutch.
Multiple solar roofs in the city center of Amsterdam
Green City Buzz is realising the construction of several solar energy systems (PV) on flat roofs throughout the city center.
As it stands, the process to install a PV system - subsidies & funding, permits, construction, the works - is quite complex. In this trial project we’re trying to achieve two things: a patchwork blanket of solar roofs in central Amsterdam, to further renewable energy production, reduce fossil power reliance, and create an example for other areas; and two, to simplify the process and lower the threshold for property owners or corporate tenants in future.
At the moment we’ve assured several interested parties and SDE+ subsidies. We’d love to add more applicants to the group, and scale up this project.

Looking for internship opportunity
My name is Tushar Narula and I am a sophomore at UC Berkeley pursuing Sustainable Environmental Design concentrating in Business, Economic Policy. I am also pursuing certifications in design innovation and technology entrepreneurship. I have always been involved in the field of sustainable cities and their development. Being fortunate enough to gain experience from various companies and research projects. I have always passionately explored different parts of the field including consulting, developing and shaping different projects.
These opportunities have provided me with a world exposure. I have also been constantly involved in the development of sustainability on campus and also made a smart campus club for the Berkeley campus. I was wondering if there would be any possibility that I could work with the Amsterdam smart city in the form of an internship and learn more as well as contribute.it could be as short as 1-2 weeks and I would not be looking for a pay but would be really eager to gain this as an opportunity and learn so much more about the field.
The meaning of the Paris Agreement for cities like Amsterdam
The world biggest cities, Amsterdam among them, founded the Climate Leadership Group (C40). C40 has made visible the policy implications for cities like Amsterdam in order to comply with the Paris Agreement in three detailed reports. I accentuate the necessity of taking note, because the reduction of global warming is one of the core objectives of being smart. I made a short summary of the reports, using their most appealing tables and graphs, which you will find below.

Smart Charging Challenge
IN THE FUTURE, WE WILL LIVE, WORK AND DRIVE ON RENEWABLE ENERGY
By linking solar and wind energy to the emergence of electric vehicles, we can accelerate the energy transition from fossil to sustainable fuels. In order to realize this, we have to work together on smart solutions.
SMART CHARGING
We charge our electric vehicles when there is an abundant supply of solar and wind energy and avoid peak hours on the electricity grid. We use the batteries of electric vehicles to store this renewable energy for later use, for driving or for example to use it for cooking or for heating our homes. This is crucial in order to meet the growing energy demand and to optimally use renewable energy.
ARE YOU A PROGRAMMER, DESIGNER, DEVELOPER, DATA SCIENTIST OR INNOVATOR? ARE YOU A STUDENT, BUILDING YOUR STARTUP?
WE WANT YOU!
We are looking for the smartest, most innovative students, companies and start-ups in the world to help us unleash all the possibilities of smart charging. The team that comes up with the best idea will win one of the four prizes of € 2500,- and will receive support to further develop and implement their idea.
The Smart Charging Challenge will be organized at Broedplaats CONTACT Amsterdam (Contactweg 47, 1014AN Amsterdam).
