Mobility

Mobility and transport are crucial for a city to function properly. Amsterdam is considered the world capital of cycling; 32% of traffic movement in Amsterdam is by bike and 63% of its inhabitants use their bike on daily basis. The number of registered electrical car owners in the Netherlands increased with 53% to 28.889 in 2016. Since 2008 car sharing increased with 376%. However, this is less than 1% of the total car use. Innovative ideas and concepts can help to improve the city’s accessibility, so share your ideas and concepts here.

Pavnext - technological pavements

Featured image

Pavnext´s solution consists of a road pavement equipment that allows kinetic energy to be extracted from vehicles and consequently reduce their motion speed without any action of the driver and without impacting the vehicle, thus promoting road safety at locations where it is required to circulate at low speed. The energy captured is then converted into electrical energy, which is produced without associated emissions and can be used in public street lighting, crosswalks, sensors, traffic lights, charging electric bicycles or even injected into the power grid. Additionally, Pavnext also provides real-time data regarding traffic and velocity, as well as generated and consumed energy, which are sent to the cloud and later used to generate reports and to optimize energy consumption in real time, promoting energy efficiency.

We are looking for new international partners that are interested in implementing pilot plants with us, to help us validate our product and reach TRL9. Please don´t hesitate to contact us if you´re interested.

ByteToken and Thales deliver RET mobile ticketing app in Rotterdam

Featured image

ByteToken, Ltd in conjunction with Thales Nederland B.V., have developed and delivered the first phase of a two-phase Mobile Ticketing and validation project for Rotterdam’s public transport operator, RET. This first phase release allows passengers to purchase tickets with iDEAL or credit card when it suits them and travel on the tram, bus, BOB bus and Fast Ferry, using ByteToken’s patented visually validated ticketing system on their smartphones.

The second phase release due later this year, will allow RET passengers to add metro ticketing to their smartphone using the National Dutch UIC 918-3 2D barcode ticketing standard. This phased rollout coincides with a major investment by RET in gate hardware and software upgrades from Thales Nederland B.V. designed to improve the passenger experience and make queuing for tickets a thing of the past. Further exciting developments of the app will include joint venue ticketing where the customer can buy travel and theatre and event tickets from within the app.

This deployment signals the beginning of an exciting phase of interconnected multi-modal ticketing where elements of MaaS (Mobility as a Service) and TaaS (Ticketing as a Service) combine to give the customer a far wider choice of purchasing and mobility options from one place...their phone.

Cenex-LCV showcases electric, connected and autonomous vehicle innovation

The last 12 months have seen accelerating progress towards the mass adoption of low carbon vehicles. Resulting in, for example, the UK government’s recent Road to Zero strategy announcement, which aims to see at least half of new cars ultra-low emission by 2030. This is reflected in the expanded range of activities and expected record attendees at the forthcoming Cenex Low Carbon Vehicle Event (Cenex-LCV2018). Held for its 11th year, the free-to-attend event will take place on 12th and 13th September 2018 at Millbrook in Bedfordshire.

The biggest event of its type in the UK, Cenex-LCV2018 provides an opportunity to showcase the latest technology, network with the wider industry, and hear about the latest innovation through its largest-ever speaker programme. Over 4,000 visitors are expected to attend from across the globe, with a particular focus on international automotive players.

This year’s Cenex-LCV event also has a number of new features offering companies, universities and project consortia the opportunity to showcase the latest developments and results, including demonstrating and presenting to both a UK and an international audience.

More generally, the number of exhibitors has increased to 220, thanks to the addition of two new halls and the expansion of existing space. Exhibitors across the three indoor halls will include motor manufacturers, Tier 1s, technology companies and universities, as well as a particularly strong turnout from the UK electric vehicle supply equipment sector, for which the Cenex-LCV event is the main showcase of the year.

The outdoor exhibition space will again host a broad range of vehicles, with over 120 on display - many of which will be available for ride & drive. These vehicles will include some equipped with new leading edge technologies in prototype form. (Note: be sure to download your drivers license code @ https://www.cenex-lcv.co.uk/ride-drive)

This largest-ever seminar programme will see over 90 speakers share their expertise in discussions, seminars and workshops, including trends in electric vehicles (EVs) and e-mobility; ultra-low emissions vehicle (ULEV) policy and market trends; smart charging solutions for EV business fleets; and digital and design engineering.

Cenex also welcomes the ZEV summit to Cenex-LCV 2018

The UK will host the world’s first zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) summit in Birmingham on 11th September 2018. DSI talks: Data from the people, for the people

Featured image

Data commons is an approach that seeks to generate sustainable value by sharing data in common, whilst giving people control over their personal data. Currently the data from our city’s traffic, our smart meters and municipal air quality sensors is harvested, processed and marketed in an opaque way. We share the data with several unkown underlying parties. Big technology firms attract users with beautiful “free” products. These offer users social connection for the hidden cost of sharing their data. These “services” are a black box: opening or adjusting them according to your own needs and ideas is not an option, whether you’re an individual or a community.

The data commons are a public, freely accessible infrastructure through which we can remotely read and control devices and sensors. People are able to create, apply and adapt the required smart devices their selves. Maybe you want to share the data that you generate, or maybe not; either way, you should be able to determine that for yourself. Is this possible? We do think so! The technology is ready and the possibilities are up for grabs!During the evening we will go deeper into the data commons and give a number of striking examples of data commons in action. Together we will build an actual common for a civil data set; the way we use our bikes in the cities and the data that we generate by cycling around.

This night is a collaboration between DataCommons and Waag.

Janine Hogendoorn – Ring Ring

The Smart Way to Antwerp launches a multimodal app

Featured image

We're very proud of our launch of the "Smart Ways to Antwerp" Multimodal routeplanner app. Go check it out!

At the end of last year, the Smart Way to Antwerp launched a multimodal route planner on this website. This handy route planner is now also available as an app for your smartphone. You can now find a route much easier, by saving favourite routes and locations, but the app also can also make personal travel suggestions and send you notifications.

Multimodal route planner
The route planner combines routes on foot, with your own (folding) bike, Velo, tram, bus, train and car. So the proposed route may require you to drive your car or ride your bike to the train station, get off at Antwerp’s Central Station and cover the last part of your journey on foot or with a Velo shared bike. Car routes are diverted to P+Rs and public car parks in the city. Sometimes you can get to your destination more easily by combining transport options.

App
You can also save favourite locations and routes in the app, ensuring you can select your most frequently used route more easily. Users can also choose to receive notifications through the app in case of roadworks with a major impact on traffic or when new mobility solutions are launched. A new bike or car sharing system, for example, is news that can be relevant to all the users.

A smart map shows you where interesting locations like P+Rs, tram stops, car sharing hubs, LEZ day pass vending machines and others are located. You can also use the smart map to calculate a route to your chosen location.

USA school teacher: opportunities to learn about Dutch climate mitigation/adaptation strategies Jun28-July7

Hello! I'm hoping (at the very last minute) to connect with some folks who might be interested in sharing their work with me through a brief informal tour or interview while I'm here in the Netherlands for the next 8 or 9 days. I'm here with the help of a small, self directed grant to develop a unit of study for my students in Chicago that will inspire them to better understand climate change as a global issue with which they can engage in creative ways in their local context. I'm interested in more or less any and all work happening around Amsterdam (or Utrecht, where I'll be from July 3-July 5, or Wageningen, July 5- July 7) that relates to the effects of climate change or mitigation/adaptation strategies. This could include any climate relevant public or private work in the electricity, transportation, building, industrial, agricultural, tech, or education sectors. For example, if you are involved with a start up that does circular economy work that reduces emissions, have a perspective to share on regional transportation, know something about zero emission architecture, or work in education and are interested in developing collaborations in terms of sustainability/climate curriculum, I'm interested in hearing from you and (in an ideal world) chatting for 30 minutes or an hour. My students are typically low income, racial minority teenagers who I believe need to be empowered to make the future as much as their economically well off and culturally "mainstream" peers. Most of my students are also soon to be voting eligible citizens of the USA, which seems relevant. Anyway, I appreciate you considering my vague request! I am of course thrilled about the wealth of resources available through Smart City Amsterdam (including the very cool new Amsterdam Innovation Tour app), and I've booked, for example, a standard tour on Friday through architour. But unfortunately my dates of travel did not align with WeMakeTheCity, the ASC Open House is not happening this Friday, and many of the other tour options are out of my price range as an individual traveling on a small grant. Thanks for any and all input. Cheers!

During this period, the long-term expectations for the Network will be examined as the market for charging points and EV will continue to mature in the coming years.

More information about the tender can be found in the attached document: GMEVPaperWMT

TfGM has indicated that it wants to get in touch with Dutch companies with the right expertise and offers to Skype for a Q & A. Dutch companies that are interested please contact Marjolein Bouwers (m.bouwers@nbso-manchester.co.uk of the NBSO in Manchester.

Bringing together energy users in an online, urban community

Featured image

Creating awareness of energy consumption patterns is the first step in improving those patterns and moving away from excessive peak-hour consumption. Using smart grid technology, awareness of household and electric vehicle (EV) consumption can be put in context with solar panel generation. Combined with social incentives and gamification in an online platform, consumers are motivated to collectively reduce peak-hour consumption.

After two years, the me² project is coming to an end. The project's researchers investigated which incentives are effective in activating demand response and maintaining user engagement. A new Smart City Aggregator, the energy platform me², was tested in two six months long pilots, in Portugal and the Netherlands. A significant difference in energy needs and level of awareness became evident. For one test group, getting insight into their energy usage with smart meters and an innovative interface was a great way to discover how to be more environmentally friendly. The other test group consisted of pioneers: EV drivers with solar panels who were already doing their best to be as green as possible.
In which country were the pioneers? Do social incentives work better in Portugal or the Netherlands? And which of the two groups managed to change their peak-hour consumption?

To learn more about the me² project, have a look at our final publication and other results on the project website or at the Urban Technology research programme of Hogeschool van Amsterdam (HvA).

Ode aan de Verbrandingsmotor (dutch)

Featured image

Bring your own Car:
