Mobility

Mobility and transport are crucial for a city to function properly. Amsterdam is considered the world capital of cycling; 32% of traffic movement in Amsterdam is by bike and 63% of its inhabitants use their bike on daily basis. The number of registered electrical car owners in the Netherlands increased with 53% to 28.889 in 2016. Since 2008 car sharing increased with 376%. However, this is less than 1% of the total car use. Innovative ideas and concepts can help to improve the city’s accessibility, so share your ideas and concepts here.

Bringing together energy users in an online, urban community

Featured image

Creating awareness of energy consumption patterns is the first step in improving those patterns and moving away from excessive peak-hour consumption. Using smart grid technology, awareness of household and electric vehicle (EV) consumption can be put in context with solar panel generation. Combined with social incentives and gamification in an online platform, consumers are motivated to collectively reduce peak-hour consumption.

After two years, the me² project is coming to an end. The project's researchers investigated which incentives are effective in activating demand response and maintaining user engagement. A new Smart City Aggregator, the energy platform me², was tested in two six months long pilots, in Portugal and the Netherlands. A significant difference in energy needs and level of awareness became evident. For one test group, getting insight into their energy usage with smart meters and an innovative interface was a great way to discover how to be more environmentally friendly. The other test group consisted of pioneers: EV drivers with solar panels who were already doing their best to be as green as possible.
In which country were the pioneers? Do social incentives work better in Portugal or the Netherlands? And which of the two groups managed to change their peak-hour consumption?

To learn more about the me² project, have a look at our final publication and other results on the project website or at the Urban Technology research programme of Hogeschool van Amsterdam (HvA).

Ode aan de Verbrandingsmotor (dutch)

Featured image

Bring your own Car:

Prevent noise nuisance from a youth hangout

Featured image

Noise pollution is one of the biggest social problems in densely populated areas. To monitor and solve noise pollution problems in cities SensorTeam developed a novel automated platform and sound sensor for distributed noise measurements.

In a partnership with the city of Amstelveen we have installed a professional audio system in a hangout at the Zetterij in Amstelveen. We use wireless sensors to measure the sound level (dB) produced around this meeting place to avoid public nuisance.

These sensors are placed in the area around the hangout. Maximum sound levels can be remotely monitored and adjusted from SensorTeam’s cloud platform.

In this smart city project the city of Amstelveen gives substance to the local youth’s wish to play music at their own hangout.

About the technique
SensorTeam’s sound level meter is solar powered and is using low power network (LoRa) communication for realtime cloud monitoring. Measurements are accurate and independent and are displayed on SensorTeam’s cloud dashboard. To visualise the recorded data (sound levels) the varying decibels are represented on a coloured map, using inverse distance weighted technique.

Lowering total cost of ownership of EVs through battery evaluation

In order to reduce the total cost of ownership of electric buses and trucks, ViriCiti and Fraunhofer IVI conducted research on extending battery life of electric buses and trucks through changing operational aspects. Extended battery life is important because it ultimately lowers the TCO of your electric fleet. By driving more electric kilometers, the operational costs of electric vehicles are lowered and they will be able to financially compete with diesel buses. The outcome of the collaboration between ViriCiti and Fraunhofer IVI is battery stress-factor evaluation reports. These reports do not only indicate the factors that exert the most stress on a vehicle's battery, but they also provide advice on ways to improve in order to prolong the battery's life. Read all about the battery-stress evaluation reports on ViriCiti's Newsroom;

How messages from public data can be delivered through design & art: example from NYC

Frequently I'm looking for open data about cities in the Netherlands and Europe. Often it requires me to dig deep, struggle and look for patterns in somewhat abstract and elusive datasets, which are hard to grasp.

Yet in the coming decades, the amount of public data will increase enormously and I believe we are now only scratching the surface of the powerful insights that remain covered. Design & Art expands the mind and can bring data alive. That's why I enjoyed this article about a newly installed art exhibit created in honor of NYC’s Open Data Week with new, interesting ways of representing data. I hope it may inspire you as well.

Perhaps a good source of inspiration for creating this in the city of Amsterdam and thinking about Smart City?

"City Brain can help solve urban issues in Amsterdam"

In a "city brain" government, businesses, and citizens bring together data, for example on traffic flows, garbage pick up and activities in the neighbourhood. This will give better insights in the issues in the city and possible solutions. Professor Nanda Piersma, professor of Urban Analytics at Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences and Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica calls for a City Brain as a public service. She held her public lecture on 17th of April 2018.

Further tekst in Dutch.

Tijs Roelofs
Program Manager Urban Innovation, CTO office Gemeente Amsterdam

Zeeger Ernsting
Gemeenteraadslid Amsterdam, Groenlinks

Jan-Bert Vroege
Gemeenteraadslid Amsterdam, D66

Petra Tiel
Manager Public Affairs VNO-NCW West

Results of the Zuidas Mobility Experience

Today on April 3rd we started with the second edition of the Zuidas Mobility Experience. During this Experience we are testing a semi Mobility as a Service solution.

Attached you can find the results of the first round which took place in October of last year. In May we will report on the results of the second edition.

Participants of the mobility experience could use any mode of transportation with a travel budget of 1000 euros, if they would not use their lease car for one month. 11 people, working in different companies on the Zuidas, took up the challenge to try a combanation of different modalities; rental bike, train, tram, taxi. Everything to make mobility better!

After the pilot 50% of the participants wanted their lease car back, but the other 50% prefered to travel on the mobility budget!

Do you have a lease car? What do you think of an all-modality travel pass?
