Smart City Dilemma Sessions: Smart Together

Featured image

Online Programma
16.00-16.10 Introductie door Leonie van Beuken, Amsterdam Smart City
16.10-16.25 Presentatie Dilemma's ingebracht door: Boris van Hoytema (Director of the Foundation For Public Code) en Berent Daan (Directeur OIS gemeente Amsterdam) en Guido van Os (hoofddocent bestuurskunde Hogeschool van Amsterdam)
16.25-17.10 Interactieve sessie over dilemma's in samenwerken in een Smart City
17.10-17.30 Conclusies

Smart City Dilemma Sessions - Energy Citizens

Featured image

This session is the first in a series of Smart City Dilemmas and podcasts. This time the topic is Energy Citizens.

The transition to a climate-neutral society and the energy transition requires the involvement of all relevant stakeholders: policymakers, energy suppliers, network operators, but also residents. In addition to being energy consumers, residents are increasingly becoming energy traders and even energy producers. We wonder what this means; and what dilemmas arise that we as the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences want to work with?

This first session Is mainly intended for teachers, researchers and others who want to gain more knowledge about the transition to a climate-neutral society.

In a small setting we will look at various approaches to Energy Citizenship, such as peer-to-peer platforms, behavior, justice, cooperation & conflict, skills and technical aspects. These topics will be covered by speakers like Reint Jan Renes (Professor of Psychology for a Sustainable City at AUAS), Beatriz Pineda Revilla (Researcher and Lecturer at AUAS), Pedro Lopes de Carvalho (Senior Researcher & Project Leader Empower 2.0 at AUAS), Jurgen van der Heijden (Senior Consultant Environment & Energy at Osborne), Martijn de Waal (professor Play and Civic Media at AUAS), Fieke van Leest (Planner and Program Manager Urban Insight at Sweco / Gemeente Amsterdam). Mark van Wees (Project manager Urban Technology and ATELIER at AUAS) will be the moderator of the session. Together we will work on dilemmas with a multidisciplinary approach in various projects like ATELIER, Schoon Schip, EMPOWER 2.0, Energy Transition Indische Buurt and Warmtenet Watergraafsmeer and learn from it. Which dilemmas pop up?

Online Program

15.00-15.15 Introduction

15.15-15.30 Pitches

15.30-16.15 Interactive sessions

16.15-16.30 Wrap up

We hope to see you on Thursday January 7!

This is an online event. Information on how to join will follow after registration.

Data Science for Smart Cities

Featured image

Responsible Data Science for Smart Cities; Can cities collect massive amounts of data on its residents and their daily practices, and yet remain safe, transparent and democratic? Today, cities are collecting more and more data, and the city of Amsterdam is at the forefront of publishing such "city data” and launching data driven services to improve its liveability. For example, data on the increasing use of electric charging points, smart waste collection systems, and good traffic flow can all be used to reduce costs and minimise waste. In this master class we provide an overview to the way Big Data is being used to make challenges in the city of Amsterdam more transparent and to develop new solutions. The master class is based on the work of Nanda Piersma, special lecturer in Big Data in the city at the HvA (the Faculty of Technology and the Faculty of Digital Media and Creative Industry).

Amsterdam Urban Living Labs

Featured image

Policy innovation through collaboration between private, public and civic partners together with knowledge institutions is increasingly seen as the best way to address complex urban challenges. One way to this is through so called “Urban Living Labs” where residents, companies, governments, students and researchers collectively tackle metropolitan problems by immersing themselves in the solution as it is being developed. What are the benefits and pitfalls of these types of living labs? In this session we share the experience and lessons accumulated by Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences with innovating through Urban Living Labs and provide specific examples and lessons learned from several projects in Amsterdam.
