Do not talk to me about smart cities...

... when a significant proportion of its households are on or below the brink of poverty. Unfortunately, this applies to most global and self-proclaimed smart cities. My latest article, called Fair Cities, is about the frightening reality of urban poverty.

It took some time, but here it is....

About six weeks, when I announced the Dutch version of my article, I promised that the English version would follow soon. It took a little bit more time.

The City of Doers
In this article I investigate how engagement and passion can enter again the workplace and how cities can contribute to achieving this goal. Most employees are not engaged, neither entrepreneurial. This is partly because many companies and institutions do not stimulate it of do not like the implications (sharing power). In this post I explore what they should do instead. I also elaborate on the starters and startup community and the conditions to let it thrive. Amsterdam is a good example, partly because of the city itself, its incubators and not to forget the role of the Amsterdam Smart City community.

Beyond take-make-waste cities

Here is my contribution to the week of circular economy. Our cities reflect the “take-make-waste principle”, which is still dominating our economy. Amsterdam too, although the city is making progress towards circularity. This article might contribute to your understanding of circularity, it explains what cities can do and what Amsterdam is doing.

Healthy food for anyone

Land use and agriculture have a significant share in greenhouse gas emissions and the rapid decline of biodiversity, and with that the endangered food security.

Not farmers in the first place, but the agro-industrial complex as a whole - we consumers included - are responsible for this huge and often underestimated problem.

In my newest post, I argue that city governments as intermediates have an important role to play in the solution of this problem, given the complex interactions between multiple actors,

You will have to wait a couple of weeks for the English version of my newest post. The Dutch version is available.
