During this masterclass, Search for Common Ground founder John Marks will provide a practical framework for social entrepreneurship, starting from values and vision and moving into effective action.

The ideas presented will draw from the extensive experience of New York Times best-selling author John Marks as a social entrepreneur, as well as from the wisdom of participants. The goal will be to lead participants through the possibilities that abound when they grasp their inner potential to make a difference and carry out the work that the world so badly needs.

The masterclass has been designed for both professionals and those just starting, as well as for people interested in expanding their effectiveness as activists. It will be interactive and multi-media, and it will cover the basic operating principles of successful social entrepreneurship. There will be a strong emphasis on fundraising.

John Marks is a New York Times best-selling author who was awarded an honorary doctorate by the UN’s University of Peace. He is both a Skoll Awardee and a Senior Ashoka Fellow. John is a social entrepreneur who founded Search for Common Ground (SFCG) and headed it for 32 years. He and Susan Collin Marks, his wife and SFCG’s former executive vice president, built the organisation into the largest peacebuilding NGO in the world with 600 staff members and offices in 35 countries. SFCG was nominated for the 2018 Nobel Prize.

That’s why SDG 16 promotes peaceful and inclusive societies, providing access to justice for all and building effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.

CONTRIBUTORS:

TYKN is a startup that is protecting access to human rights through digital identities by helping organisations validate the existence of millions of people. Tykn's digital identity platform allows public and private institutions to issue and verify digital identity credentials. It’s an innovative way to share and request personal data proofs. Users are provided with an app, a digital identity wallet, that works on every mobile device and allows them to digitally access services from those institutions in a private and secure manner. Founder Tey El-Rjula will share the inspiring journey of Tykn and how it contributes to SDG 16.

MASTERPEACE is an award-winning, global grassroots nonprofit movement present in more than 40 countries. It aims to mobilize people around the world to use their talent and energy for peace-building and togetherness. Through music, sports, arts and dialogue, MasterPeace focuses on actively engaging people around the world in peace-building actions and leads the way to a more sustainable world with less (armed) conflict.

WO = MEN: As March is the month of International Women’s Day, WO = MEN (women equals men), will create a mobile pop-up experience that allows everyone to dive into the head of a woman or a man. WO=MEN, the Dutch Gender Platform, is an association that puts the unequal power relationships and dynamic between women and men worldwide on the map with an ever-growing unique mix of organizations and individuals. Gender inequality is both a violation of human rights and an obstacle to sustainable development.

WHAT IS THE SDG MEETUP?

The Sustainable Development Goals Meetup is a monthly meetup powered by SDG House Residents Impact Hub Amsterdam and C-Change.

Entrepreneurs, campaigners, engineers, influencers – meet the changemakers
