Unpack Impact

Featured image

To make a real impact, solid collaboration with like-minded partners is needed. But how do you set up a truly flourishing partnership? How can entrepreneurs and investors work together to make impact on the ground?

Others have done it before. How did they do it?

Four successful impact enterprises will be unpacked. In all cases, the spirit of the entrepreneurs, financial possibilities provided by their investors, and support from their partner networks strengthened each other to build successful collaboration.

We are pleased to be joined by entrepreneurs making local impact in circular economy, ethical fashion, healthy food and inclusion. Their business cases will be shortly shared on our website (> http://bit.ly/UnpackImpactJun2018).

UNPACK IMPACT KEYNOTE: DR. CHARLY KLEISSNER | IMPACT INVESTOR
Dr. Charly Kleissner is an impact investor with over twenty years of experience as a senior technology executive in Silicon Valley. He believes that the deeper meaning of wealth is to make a positive contribution to humanity and the planet. Dr. Kleissner has co-founded Toniic, KL Felicitas Foundation and 100% Impact Network.

UNPACK IMPACT: ENTREPRENEUR-INVESTOR PARTNERSHIPS
After our keynote, we will hear from entrepreneur-investor duos such as Chocolatemakers & Stichting DOEN | Milieuwerk & Rabobank. In addition to ‘unpacking’ their business cases, we will help the entrepreneurs address key questions they need to answer in order to advance their enterprises.

PROGRAMME: For the full programme, please visit our website > http://bit.ly/UnpackImpactJun2018

WHY ATTEND UNPACK IMPACT
By bringing together impact enterprises, impact-driven investors and social firms, we strive to connect, encourage and stimulate conscious capital, as well as build collaborations to solve local and global challenges.

AN EVENT DURING WE MAKE THE CITY
The event is organised in affiliation with the We Make The City festival. It is also part of Unlikely Allies: The Future of Our City (http://bit.ly/UnlikelyAllies2018), Impact Hub Amsterdam’s celebration of 10 years of impactmaking in the city. Your Unpack Impact ticket grants you access to the community-driven, full-day Unlikely Allies experience. Stay tuned for the programme!

Unpack Impact is a co-creation between the Municipality of Amsterdam – Amsterdam Impact – and Impact Hub Amsterdam.

Fail Forward #3

Featured image

IT’S TIME FOR THE 3RD EDITION OF FAIL FORWARD!

At Impact Hub we believe that failure and experimentation are essential to developing innovative businesses that make real impact. So for our popular Fail Forward event we invited three impact entrepreneurs to share stories about their challenges, experiments, blunders and, of course, what they learned along the way. Get inspired by our speakers and learn how to follow your dreams and overcome your least successful experiences!

FAIL FORWARD LINE-UP:

> Silvia ten Houten, founder of GoodHout

Silvia founded GoodHout BV (Dutch for “Good Wood”), a startup looking to change the world of wood and composites through developing a bio-composite made from coconut husk waste. When she started her enterprise, managing all aspects of the business as the sole founder was sometimes overwhelming. Silvia will be sharing her journey of learning to let go, looking for a co-founder, and ultimately assembling a strong team of people who share her passion and commitment.

> Arno Kooy, co founder of De Prael

Combining Arno’s psychiatric work experience with his passion for brewing, De Prael is the first Dutch brewery to help people excluded from the job market learn a new trade. The brewery started out as De Parel (Dutch for “pearl”), only for Arno and his team to soon find out that this name had been copyrighted. So they had to rename the company, redesign its logo and reprint all promo materials. But their playful new name – an anagram of the original – worked out: after two branches in Amsterdam, De Prael is franchising to The Hague, Utrecht and Groningen. Arno will talk about overcoming obstacles and why their new name perfectly fits their mission.

> Michel Visser, founder of Konnektid

Michel is here to ‘share the fail’ and his invaluable lessons from building sharing marketplace Konnektid. Created on the premise that the skills and knowledge people need can be found their own neighbourhoods, this platform connected users to local experts and professional teachers located nearby. All that Konnektid’s users had to do in return is share their own skills and talents with the rest of the community.

19:30 Registration & drinks
20:00 Speakers & Q&A
21:30 Drinks

The evening will be moderated by Ilse Kwaaitaal, our Scouting Lead and Business Model Challenge Manager.

The SDGs in Amsterdam Challenge Lab

Featured image

WHAT IF EVERYONE IN AMSTERDAM KNEW ABOUT THE SDGS?
Are you passionate about translating the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into local action? Does your entrepreneurial initiative raise awareness of the SDGs amongst Amsterdam’s vibrant communities? Want to get a €30K grant to prototype it in the Dutch capital?

As part of the EU Social Challenges innovation platform, Amsterdam Impact - the City of Amsterdam’s Social Entrepreneurship Programme - has joined forces with Impact Hub Amsterdam to take on the SDGs in Amsterdam Challenge.

Together, we will support entrepreneurs and social innovators who help raise awareness of the SDGs - either all 17 goals or individual ones - in Amsterdam’s diverse neighbourhoods.

The City of Amsterdam is specifically interested in entrepreneurial initiatives with innovative products or services that:
- Are inclusive and take into account Amsterdam’s diversity
- Leverage technology and social media to reach a bigger audience
- Educate and engage the city’s inhabitants around the SDGs
- Link local actors less prone to collaborate on achieving the SDGs

If your product or service meets these criteria, you could potentially be awarded a €30,000 grant by an international jury and 6 months of mentoring to turn your initiative into a sustainable business.

Come ready to work collaboratively - facilitated by our partner Publieke Versnellers - to develop your plans and make your solution fit for uploading on the EU Social Challenges platform.

We have limited places, so please sign up. And keep in mind that your initiative must be a registered entity (i.e. social enterprise, foundation, association).

MORE ABOUT EU SOCIAL CHALLENGES
Impact Hub Amsterdam is working with Meta Group, EBN and the Impact Hub network across Europe to co-host the EU Social Challenges innovation platform, which boosts marketable solutions with clear social benefits. The platform matches ‘challenge owners’ – organisations with problems to solve – to entrepreneurs and social innovators.

EU Social Challenges aims to translate at least 27 challenges into 81 practical solutions, each supported by a €30,000 grant and 6 months of mentoring to turn your product, service or idea into a sustainable business.

The SDGs in Amsterdam Challenge lab is brought to you by Amsterdam Impact, Impact Hub Amsterdam, and Publieke Versnellers.

Social Hackathon

Featured image

Do you have a great idea for a better world, but need a helping hand to make it a reality? Or do you have awesome skills and a valuable network you want to use for doing good? Join us on 19 May for a full-day social hackathon organised by Impact Hub Amsterdam and Social Hackathon.

Whether you're an entrepreneur, intrapreneur, creative or techie, join a diverse group of people ready to work together on turning an idea into a practical plan to make change happen.

HOW DOES THIS WORK?

In the morning we will begin by listening to our ‘challenge owners’ - organisations with problems to solve or socially minded initiatives they want to develop further.

We will then break out in groups to work on sketching innovative solutions to these challenges. After a delicious lunch, we’ll continue to work together with a concrete methodology to transform all of our exciting proposals into pragmatic solutions.

The evening will close with a group dinner and the chance to pitch your group’s solution. Our Dragons’ Den style jury will ask some tough questions and select the winning team, which will receive a fantastic prize. But we can’t reveal that just yet!

HOW DO YOU JOIN?

> For organisations/initiatives: Come up with a socially-minded challenge and benefit from a group of young talents who will work for 13 hours on solving it.

> For individuals: Put your talents to use and join this event as one of our 'hackers' | Brainstorm about solutions to one of the proposed challenges | Contribute directly to a social initiative | Boost your skills and network.

Tickets for challenge owners are €150, for hackers €45. This includes food, drinks, resources and everything you will need for a successful Social Hackathon.

MORE ABOUT IMPACT HUB AMSTERDAM

Impact Hub Amsterdam is part of the fast-growing global Impact Hub network of impact entrepreneurs and innovators with more than 16,000 members in over 100 cities around the world.

To make change happen, we facilitate entrepreneurial solutions to society’s biggest challenges. We give you access to a valuable network, as well as business expertise, resources and capital, organise events, host a collaborative working space, and run a series of accelerator programs. We provide almost everything to move your entrepreneurial initiatives for a better world forward.

MORE ABOUT SOCIAL HACKATHON

This foundation exists to boost the networks, knowledge and opportunities of social initiatives that aim to create a fairer world. We believe in initiatives developed locally, by communities that know best what kind of social change they need. So we want to help those people realise something unique.

Our experience has taught us that setting up a successful social initiative is not that easy. And that many ideas are lost because they do not get the right support to kick off. That is why we organise Social Hackathons: to give promising social initiatives a great start.
