Project partners Arcam and the Amsterdam Drone Lab invite you to the “Urban Sky Lab” expo which kicks off with an actual drone flying from Marineterrein to the ARCAM building to open the expo. Curious about the design proposals? or how this new low altitude airspace above our city will work? Join us!

Urban Sky Lab - How do drones fit into the city of tomorrow?

Featured image

The air space above our city is about change. Drones will soon have a profound impact on our collective future - Last year alone, the city of Amsterdam detected over 43,000 low-altitude flights over our parks, squares, and waterfronts. As this trend continues to grow year-after-year, how can we repurpose drones to create a more sustainable and livable city?

This Thursday & Friday (15-16 Feb.) we are hosting the Urban Sky Lab together with Arcam and the Amsterdam Drone Lab. For this unique event we have invited Studio To Create, INBO, and FABRICations into a two-day sprint to design a future with drones for the Western Docklands, Amsterdam Zuidoost (Amsterdamse Poort area) and RAI Amsterdam.

You are welcome to attend the presentations of the preliminary results at Hotel Casa Amsterdam on Friday afternoon 16 February.

  • 18:10 Joris de Leeuw - focus trainer at Diep Werk Doen. With his company Diep Werk Doen Joris trains knowledge workers how to better concentrate on their work and resist the constant lure of apps, calls, email and media. His method teaches the principle of attention by design; how we can reshape our own thoughts and behaviours to become more productive and less restless and distracted. He will give a talk on a few of the most recent insights in the field of focus and productivity. Website: https://www.diepwerkdoen.nl.
  • 18:30 Mohamed Bah - City Rights App and City Rights Radio. Mohamed is the founder and host of the City Rights Radio and co-founder of the City Rights App. With his platforms he tries to find creative solutions to problems faced by migrants. Concerned with the dangers of negative stereotypes and its impact on the already marginalized community, he uses podcasting, and storytelling to reframe migrant representation in media.

Ethics and other digital dilemmas

Featured image

Our we spending more time than offline? Get off your screen and join us as we discuss ‘addiction by design’ and other digital dilemmas. Meet the experts on ethics and responsible technologies. During this event we will learn about how digital applications have evolved, how they have shaped our society, and how we can make them more humane. Don't miss this opportunity to network with fellow apps-for-good developers.

Next Thursday November 2nd, we will be discussing the bitter truths of ethics in web & app development. As a designer, coder or business developer, how can we keep our apps responsible? How can we create healthier relationships between app users (and makers)? What does our digital and social society look like in the next 15 years? The goal of this event is to showcase, discover and foster apps for good.

Responsible Sensing Safari & Workshop

Featured image

There is a lot of sensing going on in Amsterdam. Where are these sensors? What kinds of sensors are there? How do these sensors help our city? Join us on October 4th for a hands-on workshop to learn how to use 1) privacy-by-design toolkits, 2) discover citizen centric sensors and 3) learn how to make your own smart city projects more responsible.

Join us for an inspiring afternoon to learn and build human centric smart city technologies.

REGISTER FREE >> Eventbrite Responsible Sensing Safari & Workshop

Are you a concerned smart citizen, or smart city innovator? This workshop is for you! Tom van Arman, from TAPP - Smart City Architecture will guide you through the many legal, technical and even spatial considerations that you'll need to know about before deploying sensors in public space. Participants will go on a real-world Sensor Safari to discover the many devices in their natural habitat. Finally, roll up your sleeves and work together in a ‘Sensing Dilemma Workshop’ where we will field test some sensing projects to see how it can help (or harm) our future city! The workshop will take place on the Marineterrein, an inner-city test ground for a sustainable living environment.
Ethics in smart city technology is not something you assess at one specific point in time in a tech's lifecycle and then can forget about it. In the project Human Values for Smarter Cities, researchers, designers, civil servants (The Hague, Rotterdam and Amsterdam), and citizens look for ways ethical principles can be interwoven in the articulation, making, deployment and adjustment of smart city technology.

Want to become a Smart City Architect?

Featured image

Are you an architect, urban designer, planner, engineer or designer and want to know more about the challenges facing the future of Amsterdam, or want to become more familiar with the many smart city technologies, techniques and trends that are available to solve these urgent challenges?

Arcam's Architect in Residence 2022 and Future City Maker Tom van Arman invites the design community to a special a (free) 1 day only Smart City Design workshop where we will show you some key projects accelerating the Amsterdam 2030-2050 agendas.

Spaces are limited RSVP - Wednesday June 15th!

WHY? The physical and digital worlds are becoming more and more intertwined as new markets like drone delivery, micro-grids / blockchain, digital twins and 3D printing are shaping the city sometimes faster than the authorities and architects can cope with.

WHAT? By the end of this workshop you will have had a clear look into the many systems shaping Amsterdam and what a designer like you can do to help transform our future city.

Where are the 'Dark Stores' in Amsterdam?

Featured image

While it’s easy to find Gorillas, Getir, Flink, and Zapp flash delivery services in iTunes or Google Play app stores, It’s not so easy to locate these many grocery depots in Amsterdam.

In this interactive map we located the many physical locations of these dark stores to see the saturated landscape of flitsbezorging (flash delivery) infrastructure in Amsterdam. The goal of the map is to help consumers choose delivery services based on proximity to homes / businesses and help calm some inner city bike routes!

Curious to see the 10minute cycle zones or the locations of the many dark stores in Amsterdam? Check out this map and more information about dark stores here.
