Call out for interesting research projects for 4th year students starting in the fall semester (sept 2018)!

In 2015, the HvA became a cooperation partner of Amsterdam Smart City. In addition to various research activities, the HvA also provides education in the field of Smart City. Fourth-year Business Administration students conduct research projects for organisations that deal with smart city solutions. If you are interested in inviting a student group to do research for your organisation, please contact Wieke Schrama w.schrama@hva.nl . One of the students (Mitchell Elferink) has written a blog on the subject.

The Data Economy - How to Succeed in a World of Data and AI

Featured image

The Amsterdam Business School is honoured to invite Professor Viktor Mayer-Schönberger to speak about what companies will need to do in order to succeed in the new data economy. His lecture will take place on Friday 25 May.

Due to an abundance of data and the availability of data-driven machine learning systems, we are entering the world of the data economy, an economy in which data is replacing money as the main driver of market behavior. In this economy markets will soar, conventional firms will struggle and traditional financial institutions will face unlikely competition by small groups and individual actors. The future will be driven by data, but run by digital superstars. Avoiding this oligopolistic dystopia will require bold measures.

SmartGrid Optimization

Featured image

At the University of Amsterdam, in the course of Heuristics, we have a case on SmartGrids. The assignment involves writing algorithms to optimally configure a grid of energy consuming and producing entities.

Houses with solar panels with different outputs must be linked to batteries, all placed on a grid, with minimal wiring cost. In a later stage, alternative locations for batteries might also be obtained.

Check out the case on heuristieken.nl.

CODALoop Amsterdam

Featured image

CODALoop is a EU-funded research project and a joint venture of different academic and non-academic partners in three countries, The Netherlands, Austria and Turkey and four cities, Amsterdam, Graz, Leibnitz and Istanbul. CODALoop Amsterdam is active in two neighborhoods, the Indische Buurt and Buiksloterham.

There is a tremendous urgency to reduce energy consumption to guarantee quality of life for future generations. In the light of the weak results of behavioral approaches and top-down investments on infrastructures for energy efficiency, such as grid management, smart meters and the like, innovative approaches to tackle this issue are required. CODALoop Amsterdam is a research project which uses a sociological approach and explores the extent to which social interactions, at the level of the neighborhood, are able to activate ‘energy consciousness’.
