Wormhotels for sidewalk Vermicomposting

Featured image

Le Compostier designs & builds systems for vermicomposting in the city. By offering smart, durable and tastefull designs for urban vermicomposting we hope to inspire city residents to take ownership of their own waste & neighbourhoods. The wormhotels are used by relatively small groups of neighbours & help build social cohesion in neighbourhoods, while turning waste into value for local food production. The produced vermicompost can be used by the participating neighbours, or can be donated to local urban farms & other green projects in the city. Thereby helping to green the city & stimulate food production in the city. Vermicompost has many advantages in comparison to other forms of fertilizers.

Smart Stories

Check the article about the worm hotels featured in our online magazine 'Smart Stories':

What is the goal of the project?

We aim to turn as much organic waste as possible into value, using wormhotels. Neighbours come together and make rich vermicompost out of their kitchen & garden waste, helping to reduce the volume of the waste in the city and making rich soil for foodproduction in the city at the same time.

What is the result of the project?

The aimed result is to have a network of different types of wormhotels placed throughout the city, used by neighbours to become selfsufficient and start using the compost to grow healthy food in the city.

Who initiated the project and which organizations are involved?

Rowin Snijder (Le Compostier) has been researching and developing the worm hotels for three years now. Organisations that are involved now are The Green Living Lab (greenlivinglab.org), the city of Amsterdam, the city of Diemen, the city of Amstelveen & StadsOogst Compost Coöperation.

What is the next step?

We like to start involving more businesses and offer a solution for turning organic waste from small restaurants & local foodproducers into compost for foodproduction in & around the city.

What can other cities learn from your project?

When offered a way to use organic waste in the city, many people gladly embrace it and take pride into being part of the solution. Its helps to offer solutions that involve taking action on the side of the inhabitants of the city & give a feeling of 'we are doing it together'. People like to take ownership of their neighbourhoods.

Hi Rowin, this initiative is perfect! I would like to help in any way. I myself put together a lot of research and planning or a sustainable business solution for composting BUT really just kept falling short on the design. This is a really nice solution for a small space that I would love to help promote and even install in my own neighbourhood. I have a background in marketing with access to friends with plenty of design and film backgrounds. I also have access to a woodshop nearby so we can even build something nearby. Hope to connect!

Hi there!
We are a group of students from Lund University (Sweden), studying our Master in Information Systems. In one of our courses, we are doing a research about sustainable/smart cities in Europe and after reading about Amsterdam, the choice of city became easy!

By looking at this project, we see that you would fit very well in an interview about the smart city initiatives in Amsterdam from an entreprenoural point of view. We would be very grateful if you took your time to help us out answering our questions, which will take around 45 min - 1 hour.

If you would like a copy of our report when it is finished, we’ll gladly share it with you!

Please contact me and I will explain more: fredriksson.otto@gmail.com
