Proud of your project? Does it take into account the changing climate and more extreme weather? Then you now have the opportunity to put your project on a world stage.

Expand your network and the visibility of your climate adaptive project on a global level and register to be part of the Climate Adaptation Summit 2021.

What is CAS21?

The online CAS21 (https://www.cas2021.nl/ ) will take place on 25 and 26 January, hosted by the Netherlands. CAS21 is a global climate adaptation conference organized by the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment. World leaders present the Adaptation Action
Agenda during this 24-hour climate summit. They make agreements to prepare for the consequences of more extreme weather.

Week full of events

In addition to the CAS21 itself, the whole week is devoted to climate adaptation. Various events will be organized by municipalities and partners between 19 and 25 January 2021.

Amsterdam should of course not be missing in this spectacle. CAS21 is the unique place to generate global visibility for Amsterdam's climate adaptive projects and innovations.

How do you give your project the stage?
We really need your input to show as much inspiring content as possible!

There are two ways to contribute:

1. We make a video of your (climate adaptive) project.
Register with us with your idea and a brief description of what you would like to show and tell in the short film. Do we choose your idea? Then a film crew will visit you and your project in the short term and we will make an inspiring video. This will be broadcast on January 25th and 26th as a  side programma of the CAS21. 2. Organize a coronaproof event in the week of 25 to 29 January 2021.
This week will be entirely devoted to Climate Adaptation. You too can contribute this week by organizing something on this theme! This can be both a physical and an online event. Think of an online workshop, digital innovation market, tile seesaw campaigns, planting façade gardens, large or small it does not matter! As long as it has to do with climate adaptation. In order to make as much impact as possible, we try to bundle all ideas and projects. This way we can be part of CAS21 with a powerful program and communicate this as a whole to the outside through various channels.

Energie Positief wil worden? Welke zaken komen daar bij kijken? Dat wordt
op dit moment in Buiksloterham onderzocht in het Europese project
ATELIER. Denk mee, laat je inspireren en informeren in deze gratis
Innovatie Atelier webinar!”

De Gemeente Amsterdam wil samen met
lokale partners laten zien dat een (deel van de) wijk Buiksloterham
Energie Positief kan worden, oftewel meer energie levert dan gebruikt. In
het Europese project ATELIER wordt in twee Europese steden (Amsterdam en
Bilbao) een Positief Energie District gerealiseerd. In het project werken
30 organisaties samen aan het realiseren van deze doelstelling in de
periode van november 2019 tot december 2024.

Om een wijk  energie te laten leveren, zijn veel vernieuwingen en
innovaties nodig. In het Innovatie Atelier Buiksloterham wordt door de
gemeente, bedrijven, kennisinstellingen en bewoners samengewerkt om deze
vernieuwingen in de praktijk te realiseren. Denk aan duurzame energie
opwek, opslag en uitwisseling. Dit brengt niet alleen technische
uitdagingen met zich mee, maar ook uitdagingen rond financiering en
betaalbaarheid, wetgeving en juridische kaders, en sociale innovatie. De
burger heeft bij het realiseren van een energie-positieve wijk een
belangrijke rol.

In deze webinar wordt de officiële aftrap gegeven van het Innovatie
Atelier Buiksloterham. Dit is de gelegenheid om u te informeren over de
ambities en de werkwijze om een energie-positieve wijk te realiseren in
Buiksloterham!

Te wicked? Niet voor ons.

Wij werken allemaal aan urgente, complexe, maatschappelijke uitdagingen. Issues die schier onoplosbaar lijken, van dilemma’s en paradoxen omgeven, nog niet duidelijk hoe het moet. Wel is duidelijk dát het moet, dat we elkaar nodig
hebben en dat we er NU aan moeten beginnen. Om met de woorden van Jan Rotmans te spreken; we leven niet in een tijdperk van verandering maar in een verandering van tijdperk. En hier hoort een nieuwe gereedschapskist bij.

En of je nou aan energietransitie werkt, andere mobiliteitssystemen, creëren van waterstofhubs, peer to peer autodeelsystemen, het maakt niet uit, we zien dat al deze opgaven op enig moment tegen gelijksoortige barrières aanlopen. Op samenwerking, financiering, privacy, onvoldoende aansluiting op de maatschappij, om maar een paar voorbeelden te noemen.

Unieke samenwerking
Als Amsterdam Smart City netwerk willen en kunnen we deze opgaven niet laten liggen. Door het bundelen van onze kennis en expertise kunnen we als netwerk iets unieks bieden en de wil en durf tonen om deze barrières te doorbreken. De betrokken partners die dit uitdenken en begeleiden zijn RHDHV, Kennisland, Drift, NEMO, Arcadis, Alliander, HvA en Metabolic. Zij bundelen hun expertise en ervaring om de echte vragen boven tafel te krijgen, tot nieuwe manieren van samenwerken te komen en barrières te doorbreken. We richten ons met name op de start van de samenwerking. Gezamenlijk ontwikkelen we een ‘wicked problem aanpak’. Op een nieuwe manier, lerend door te doen, exploratief.

Waar moet je aan denken?
Wat is eigenlijk het echte probleem? Wiens probleem is dit? Hoe kijken anderen er tegenaan? Welke andere partijen lijken nodig? Hoe vind je ze? Hoe ga je om met eigenaarschap en botsende frames? Hoe zorg je dat je al in
een vroeg stadium de maatschappij (bewoners, ondernemers, werknemers, etc) betrekt en hun ervaringen in het project trekt? Het wicked problem team zet nieuwe methoden in voor het beantwoorden van deze vragen. En het creëren van de benodigde commitment om het vraagstuk aan te pakken. Niets staat van te voren vast, want we passen ons aan aan wat we tegenkomen. Met elkaar ontwikkelen we een nieuwe aanpak om de barrières te doorbreken.

Centre of Expertise Urban Technology gaat langjarig en strategisch partnerschap aan met Vattenfall

Centre of Expertise Urban Technology van de Hogeschool van Amsterdam (HvA) gaat een partnerschap aan voor tien jaar met energieleverancier Vattenfall, om toe te werken naar 100% fossielvrij elektriciteitsverbruik van alle HvA gebouwen. Tevens biedt Vattenfall als praktijkpartner urgente vraagstukken aan om een langdurige onderwijs- en onderzoekslijn te bepalen. Daarmee kan HvA serieuze stappen zetten in verduurzaming en de energietransitie. ‘De bevindingen uit onze onderzoeken dienen als voorbeelden voor het toekomstige energiesysteem in Nederland.’

De tienjarige samenwerking start in 2022, maar het eerste thema van de langdurige onderzoekslijn is al bepaald om toe te werken naar fossielvrij elektriciteitsverbruik: ‘uurmatching’. Dit is de zoektocht naar een oplossing voor de mismatch per uur tussen enerzijds het verbruik van duurzame elektriciteit en anderzijds het aanbod van duurzaam opgewekte elektriciteit. Deze mismatch wordt veroorzaakt doordat duurzame bronnen niet altijd voldoende elektriciteit produceren of elektriciteit produceren op momenten dat er geen behoefte is.

HvA wil samen met Vattenfall  in de komende jaren toewerken naar 100% fossielvrij elektriciteitsverbruik (100% uurmatching) in haar gebouwen. Ook de panden van de Universiteit van Amsterdam  (UvA) en Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica  (CWI) dienen als proeftuin van dit onderzoek. Om de oplossingen voor mitsmatch te vinden, ontwikkelt de HvA de komende jaren onderzoeksprojecten ondersteund door nationale en Europese subsidiefondsen.

Op zoek naar de challenge

‘Voor het onderwijs zoeken we samen met Vattenfall naar een overkoepelende ‘challenge’, die we elke paar jaar bijstellen naar behoefte vanuit de beroepspraktijk’, vertelt Felia Boerwinkel, themaregisseur Energietransitie bij Centre of Expertise Urban Technology van de HvA. ‘Vattenfall dient vraagstukken bij ons in, en gezamenlijk met onderwijs en onderzoek gaan we dit invullen met opleidingsminors, stageplaatsen, workshops en gastcolleges. In onze studio’s benutten we specifieke technologieën en vaardigheden voor de kennis- en innovatievraagstukken, en komt onderwijs in aanraking met onderzoek. Zo kunnen we studenten heel gericht klaarstomen voor werk na de studie.’

Vattenfall is een belangrijke speler in het Amsterdamse en Nederlandse energieveld als eigenaar van een deel van het Amsterdamse warmtenet, marktleider in publieke laadpunten en energieleverancier van vele klanten. Renee Heller, lector Energie & Innovatie bij de HvA: ‘Door met Vattenfall samen te werken aan verduurzaming en energie-innovaties kunnen we grote impact hebben. Het is een groot bedrijf waar voor onze studenten ook veel kansen liggen, voor stages en als toekomstige werkgever. Met het krappe aanbod van technici is het voor Vattenfall interessant onze studenten te leren kennen.’

Krachten bundelen

‘Door een lange samenwerking met een praktijkpartner kunnen we continu van elkaar leren, onderzoek constant bijsturen en beter weten wat voor vaardigheden studenten moeten ontwikkelen; nu en voor de toekomst’, vult Boerwinkel aan. ‘Daarnaast biedt een structurele samenwerking de kans om onderzoek thematisch breed aan te vliegen en andere Centres of Expertise en lectoraten van de HvA erbij te betrekken. Binnen het lectoraat Energie & Innovatie hebben we kennis over de techniek, maar in een transitie spelen brede vraagstukken om echt resultaat te boeken, bijvoorbeeld over gedragsverandering, beleid en financierbaarheid.’

Energielevering universiteitsgebouwen

De samenwerking kreeg vorm als onderdeel van een nieuwe energie-aanbesteding van HvA, UvA en CWI, uitgevoerd door Facility Services (FS). Vattenfall kwam uit de bus als energieleverancier en partner op onderwijs en onderzoek tussen 2022 en 2032. Door eerdere samenwerkingen vonden FS en Urban Technology elkaar snel. ‘In ons partnerschap werken we al jaren aan duurzaamheidsambities, zoals duurzame inkoop en het energiezuinig maken van onze panden’, vertelt Rowan Boeters van FS. ‘Nu we met Vattenfall langdurig in het huwelijksbootje zijn gestapt, kunnen we aan lange termijndoelen werken en een serieuze bijdrage leveren aan de energietransitie. We zijn nu bezig met de routekaart hoe we onze elektriciteitsinkoop duurzamer, groener kunnen maken. Wij geloven in het verbinden van onderwijs, onderzoek en de beroepspraktijk, om daarin echt resultaten te boeken.’

Centre of Expertise Urban Technology

Het Centre of Expertise Urban Technology van de HvA draait om de belangrijke opgaven voor de stad, namelijk het toewerken naar circulaire, competitieve en leefbare steden. Vier thema’s staan centraal: Energietransitie, Circulaire stad, Designing Future Cities en Connectiviteit/Mobiliteit. Thema Energietransitie gaat over het leveren van een bijdrage aan de lokale duurzame energietransitie met focus op warmtenetten, vergroting zonne-energie, smart grids (met focus op inpassing van elektrische mobiliteit), energieneutrale- en positieve gebouwen/wijken en de ontwikkeling van laadinfrastructuur voor elektrisch vervoer. Als Centre of Expertise van de Faculteit Techniek fungeert Urban Technology als linking pin tussen onderwijs, onderzoek en beroepspraktijk.

For my master degree in engineering, I am looking for an internship in the smart grids or smart buildings fields. It will start in April 2021 and last 4 to 5 months. My subjects of study are energy (electricity, Heat transfer, renewable energies) and IT (programming, embedded systems, IOT). I want to use my skills to help your community on any project related to energy. I'm particularly interested in programming and IOT.
Currently, I'm working on a smart street light network project. The idea is to design energy efficient street lights that communicate with one another and prevent night time disorders by recording any noise over a given threshold and pushing the data to a supervisor.

The European Green Deal is the European Commission's strategy for a more sustainable, cleaner and healthier European economy. Research and innovation are of course key to make this happen. RVO (the Dutch agency for subsidies) announces several calls in the coming months of 2020 with a total budget of € 1 billion.

First one on the planning is a special EIC accelerator call for SMEs that need some help to develop a green idea and scale it up internationally. Support will be a subsidy up to € 2,5 million and there is an option for receiving equity up to € 15 million. Projects need to contribute substantially to the European goals for fighting climate change.

Please note that this information is preliminary, more info in Dutch on the website of RVO and we expect that the EU will publish this call in the coming weeks. The RVO-site will update the links to the EC call info, which is not online yet.

Op 6 maart was de feestelijke lancering van de Routekaart Amsterdam Klimaatneutraal in 2050. En ik was hierbij aanwezig! Met de Routekaart laat de gemeente zien hoe zij op weg is naar een Nieuw Amsterdams Klimaat.

Met de Routekaart laat de gemeente zien hoe zij op weg is naar een Nieuw Amsterdams Klimaat. Het is een ambitiedocument met een lange termijn visie op de Amsterdamse energietransitie en acties voor de korte termijn. De gemeente gaat samen met bewoners, bedrijven en instellingen intensief samenwerken om de verandering naar duurzame energie in beweging te zetten. Hier kijk ik met veel enthousiasme en bewondering naar. Voor mij is het open en transparant delen van kennis hét sleutelwoord in de transitie. Met elkaar leren door te doen, aan de slag te gaan. Zo gaan we samen op weg naar betere straten, buurten en steden voor iedereen!

De Routekaart is inhoudelijk opgedeeld langs 4 transitiepaden: gebouwde omgeving, verkeer & vervoer, elektriciteit en haven & industrie. Enerzijds neemt de gemeente Amsterdam top-down initiatief en werkt planmatig aan het behalen van doelen. Anderzijds is de basis van duizenden kleinere initiatieven net zo hard nodig: via een bottom-up benadering. Amsterdammers die zelf aan de slag willen, bewoners, bedrijven en instellingen, alleen of samen, kunnen op steun rekenen.

Gebouwde Omgeving

In 2050 moeten alle gebouwen in de stad op een duurzame manier worden verwarmd. Vervanging van aardgas door alternatieve warmtebronnen én energiebesparing staan daarom centraal. Dit betekent dat er achter elke voordeur, achter elke gevel en in iedere straat iets staat te gebeuren. De pijlers zijn:

- Opschalen van de wijk-voor-wijk aanpak aardgasvrij

- Ontwikkelen van duurzame bronnen voor het warmtenet

- Doorgroeien naar een stadsbrede warmte-infrastructuur

- Energiezuinig maken van woningen

- Energiezuinig maken van zakelijke markt

- Energiezuinig maken van maatschappelijke gebouwen

- Energieneutraal bouwen

Verkeer & Vervoer

In 2030 is al het verkeer op de Amsterdamse wegen en over het water uitstootvrij. Er is ruimte in de stad voor voetgangers, fietsers en spelende kinderen en er zijn minder autoritten. De pijlers binnen transitiepad Mobiliteit zijn:

- Beperken vervuilende verkeerbewegingen

- Verschonen van alle vervuilende voer- en vaartuigen

Elektriciteit

In 2030 is 80% van de elektriciteit die huishoudens gebruiken opgewekt uit zonne- en windenergie. Elektriciteit speelt een sleutelrol in de energietransitie. Door de overgang naar een aardgasvrije stad en de groei van het aantal elektrische voertuigen is er veel meer elektriciteit nodig. De pijlers zijn:

- Maximaal opwekken van zonne-energie op daken

- Optimaal benutten potentie windenergie

- Werken aan een toekomstbestendige elektriciteitsinfrastructuur

Haven & Industrie

In 2050 is de industrie volledig overgestapt op duurzame energiebronnen. In 2030 behoort de haven van Amsterdam tot de duurzaamste havens van Europa en zijn steenkolen volledig uit te faseren. Daarnaast zal de haven fungeren als duurzame batterij voor de stad, regio en Europa. De pijlers zijn:

- Transformeren van de haven naar duurzame batterij

- Ontwikkelen groene waterstofeconomie

- CO2-uitstoot afvangen, opslaan en hergebruiken

- Energie besparen in de industrie

Voor de transitie van fossiele naar duurzame energie moeten we ons niet alleen richten op CO2. Randvoorwaarden zoals draagvlak en samenwerking zijn net zo belangrijk. De vraagstukken zijn groot en vaak met elkaar verweven. Wij, bij Amsterdam Smart City, geloven dat innoveren op deze grote vraagstukken samen moet. Binnen Amsterdam Smart City brengen we deze partijen dan ook samen. Als onafhankelijk platform, ieder vanuit zijn eigen rol. Vanuit gedeelde waarden en doelen. Ik werk met veel plezier, samen met onze partners, aan het verwezenlijken van deze mooie plannen voor de stad!

The changes in the field of sustainability are in full swing. Electric cars, heat pumps and solar panels ensure that a lot of people can make their contribution, even at home. At the same time, these innovations appeal to the electricity grid in the city. More infrastructure is needed to be able to supply the increasing demand for electricity. On the other hand, we have to deal with electricity in different ways. How do we do this? What is needed to keep moving forward? And how do we involve residents in this?

On the 15th of October, Amsterdam Smart City and some of our partners discussed this topic in Pakhuis de Zwijger. Amsterdam Smart City aims for a conversation between its partners and the general public. After all, residents are the ones that have to deal with all innovative projects and the ones with great initiatives themselves, so let’s involve them as soon as possible!

This summer, grid operator Liander and the City of Amsterdam launched a report with an alarming message: in 2050 we will need 2,5 times more electricity than we do now. Eric Koldenhof from the Sustainability department of the City of Amsterdam and Paul van Engelen, region lead Amsterdam of Liander told the audience that this is quite a puzzle, with a growing population and shrinking physical space. For Amsterdam this expected increase in electricity demand means we will need 6 to 8 more electrical substations and around 2.500 small containers throughout the city. They showed a map with warning signs: some of the current substations are already reaching their maximum capacity.

Leonie van den Beuken, program director of Amsterdam Smart City, asked Koldenhof and Van Engelen how critical this issue really is: ‘Is there a possibility we will not be able to switch on a light in the near future?’ Paul: ‘We won’t lose power, don’t worry. The real problems are the new developments. With the current capacity on the grid, it will be very hard to connect new customers, such as big car charging stations or datacenters.’

We will need to expand the electricity grid, but there are two other big recommendations in the research: we need innovative solutions that can work off the grid or efficiently to reduce the impact on the grid and the City and Liander want to look forward and cooperate more. If we have to open up a street for cabling, this can be a possibility to do other constructions simultaneously.

Falco Pieters from Stichting Wiek-II, Peter Paul van Voorst from Skoon Energy and Marjolein Bot from the Amsterdam Economic Board are the ones with solutions to unburden the electricity grid. In Arnhem-Nijmegen, Falco combines technological innovations, wind and solar energy with the participation of citizens. Wiek-II found a way to connect this generated energy to the grid more efficiently and they are happy to copy the concept to other areas in the Netherlands.

Skoon Energy created big switch batteries, mainly for the maritime sector, but they also work for festivals and construction – and perhaps even in the city as a temporarily solution These batteries are short term solutions, but batteries can be charged when there is space on the grid. Peter Paul: ‘I am really happy with the ambitions of the City of Amsterdam and the urgency for innovation. This creates opportunities for my business!’

Marjolein Bot told the audience about her research on the influence of digitalization. Not only sustainable solutions ask for more electricity, data and digitalization are increasing the demand as well. Marjolein is working on efficiency in IT such as green coding, photonics, blockchain, AI and datacenters.

In 2021 governments with plans for the public space will be obliged to incorporate citizens’ opinions in their plans (‘Omgevingswet’). This means that participation and co-creation with citizens is becoming more important, also in the decision on where to build new electrical substations in the city. How can we make sure that participation is useful and meaningful? Dave van Loon (Kennisland), Melika Levelt (Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences) and Pauline Westendorp (02025) are working on participation on a day-to-day basis.

The panel discussed the conditions for citizens to participate in these kind of processes. Melika Levelt: ‘As a government or company, please be clear about the processes that are fixed and that are going to happen anyway. Be clear about the influence residents can have and tell them honestly if you have to make another choice because of political reasons. Citizens will only be interested if you have clear and concrete questions. Take time to hear as many opinions as possible. They really have a feeling about the physical space and their neighbourhood, so take this into account. It is not only a project, but really a place to live.’ Dave: ‘And it is very important to realize that a lot of individuals won’t take the time to cooperate with you. You have to get in touch with citizens’ initiatives and local cooperatives.’

Paulien challenged the City of Amsterdam: ‘Can we focus on developments before 2030 or 2050? Can we make changes now or tomorrow? People are ready for it!’ But be aware: not everyone wants to participate. Some people just want others to take the lead in these developments. And that’s fine as well.
