Transform Single-use Waste Plastic into Valuable Products

On Thursday, November 4, 2021 you are most welcome to join the webinar about TRANSFORM-CE in English. The project team will then tell you what it is looking for and provide examples of business support opportunities.

Opportunity for your business?
Interreg NW Europe funded project, TRANSFORM-CE, launches the first in its informative webinar series on turning single-use plastic waste into valuable new products. It will introduce two innovative technologies, additive manufacturing and intrusion-extrusion moulding, which are facilitating the transformation of this common waste stream into the feedstock for countless applications, from roof tiles and decking to architectural models and 3D printed components. This is a fantastic opportunity for businesses, manufacturers and government authorities interested in learning more about TRANSFORM-CE and the potential benefits of transitioning to a circular economy business model. The project partners also welcome designers, creatives and members of the public who are interested in exploring the potential of single use plastic waste.

New technologies for a circular economy of plastic?
TRANSFORM-CE is currently running two pilots to turn single-use plastic waste into raw plastic feedstock: an AM R&D centre in Greater Manchester (United Kingdom) and an IEM plastic factory in Almere (The Netherlands). A third AM facility, a prototyping centre, will open early 2022 in Belgium. Work has already begun, using the feedstock to manufacture products like outdoor furniture, building materials and even houses. Once the technology is scaled up, TRANSFORM-CE’s partners will have the potential to develop circular economy business models and stimulate new secondary material markets across North West Europe and beyond. Waste plastic can be re-purposed and revalued.

Who will speak?
• Rhiannon Hunt: Circular Economy Project Manager at Manchester Metropolitan University, UK.
• Bram Peters: Owner of the Green Plastic Factory Almere and Save Plastics, the Netherlands.
• Malou van der Vegt: Researcher and Lecturer in the Circular Economy at the Utrecht University of Applied Sciences, the Netherlands.
• Evert-Jan Velzing: Scientist and Lecturer at the Utrecht University of Applied Sciences, the Netherlands.

David Greenfield will be the facilitator of the webinar. He is managing director and founder of SOcial, ENvironmental & EConomic Solutions (SOENECS) Ltd.

What will be preliminary programme?
14:00 Opening address and introduction to TRANSFORM-CE
14:05 Transforming single-use plastic waste into filament for additive manufacturing
14:15 Creating new products from single-use plastic waste using intrusion-extrusion
moulding
14:25 The business case for adopting circular economy solutions
14:45 Be a part of TRANSFORM-CE; opportunities for businesses

Living within planetary limits: impact assessment tools for cities and regions

Featured image

To live within planetary boundaries, cities need to measure not only what is produced, but also what is consumed.

Consumption-based emissions can be more difficult to measure than emissions from production – it is challenging for a city or region to track imported products and their associated emissions.

However, consumption can be much bigger than production, and the two together provide a much more complete picture of a city or region's 'footprint'. Check out Metabolic's article from 2020 to learn more.

About this event

Unpack Impact | 2021

How can we enable systematic change through collaboration between entrepreneurs and financiers? Learn from new entrepreneur-investor models and take the food and agri sector as an example. The event is not restricted to the agrifood topic only.

The world has focused first on energy in its effort to stop greenhouse gas emissions, but agriculture is also a key contributor to climate change and biodiversity loss. Introducing transformative change in agriculture demands involvement from all actors in the value chain, from farmers and producers to investors and consumers. It also needs new economic models. How can investors, organisations, policymakers and farmers collaborate to create a sustainable, transformative change?

Join us for a provocative conversation about how innovators in food and agri are working with forward-thinking financiers to enable new models. How are these models applicable to other sectors? Together with Amsterdam Impact, we invite (soon-to-be) entrepreneurs and investors in diverse contexts to join us to hear the learnings, struggles and opportunities of co-creating new more generative models.

Hear from:

Danielle de Nie (Stichting Wij.land) and Liesbeth Soer (Triodos Regenerative Money Centre) about their collaboration to launch Aardpeer, an organisation making land available to nature-inclusive farmers. They will share insights on dealing with the issue of acquiring expensive farmland while transitioning towards sustainable change in agriculture.

Brad Vanstone (Willicroft), brings quality plant-based cheeses to market and is now working with Dutch dairy farmers to help them transition to more sustainable alternatives. As a systems-aware impact entrepreneur, he will share learnings on building a values-based enterprise and marketplace.

Eva Teekens (ReNature) brings both the entrepreneur and investor perspective in how to approach the transition to a regenerative model, and particularly in generating the first agroforestry carbon credits in Brazil, together with Rabobank through their new carbon marketplace Acorn.

Keynote

Our special keynote speaker is Joel Solomon, founding partner of Renewal Funds, Canada's largest mission venture capital firm, and co-author of The Clean Money Revolution, addressing investment strategies to boost systematic impact and transforming the culture of capitalism. Joel will share what he has learned from his wide experience in pioneering the integrated use of capital for social impact and strengthening sustainable businesses across various sectors.

Reserve your online-spot here !

Program:

14:30 Welcome by Tatiana Glad, Co-founder and Director, Impact Hub Amsterdam and Ellen Oetelmans, Program Manager, Amsterdam Impact (City of Amsterdam)

 • Conversation with Aardpeer, Willicroft and ReNature in a talk show style with audience Q&A
 • Keynote speaker: Joel Solomon with audience Q&A

Collaborative Economy

Featured image

What is the collaborative economy?
Collaborative economy - also known as shared economy or collaborative consumption, is a socio-economic ecosystem built around the sharing of human, physical and intellectual resources. It also includes the creation, production, distribution, trade and shared consumption of products and services by different companies and associations.

Collaborative economy is when we can exchange services. Multicurrencies. There is always someone who has some job or service offered on offer. In times of crisis, it is necessary to think of a creative creative futures (futures) strategy. Creative economy in essence.
What is economics anyway? In my opinion, a set of values, beliefs, experiences that is beyond the tangible, I can say, of what is material. What I can consume. And the intangible is the exponential, everything I have of possibilities for the future.

When the functional lifetime of an object is over, its highest possible value should be retained. This shortens supply chains, increases resilience, and safeguards the environment from manufacturing-related emissions.

Currently, the construction sector is optimized for a linear supply chain. This is mainly due to a lack of information on harvestable materials and their reuse value.
