Are you an Amsterdam-based entrepreneur, or do you work for an SME? And do you want to make your company more sustainable? Then draw up a proposal for an Impact Deal before 24 February and receive support from the City of Amsterdam.

What is an Impact Deal?

The City of Amsterdam (Amsterdam Impact) is looking for 10 Amsterdam companies that want to take concrete steps in 2023 towards becoming more sustainable or increasing their social impact.

In an Impact Deal, the entrepreneur and the municipality agree to increase that company's impact by, for example, reducing CO2 emissions by 30 per cent or hiring five job seekers at a distance from the labour market.

The deal must be as concrete as possible, and the entrepreneur should define goals, activities and outcomes. The municipality provides support by offering access to its network and consultations on topics such as financing and access to European funds.

Who is behind the Impact Deals project?

Amsterdam Impact and MKB Amsterdam are the initiators of Impact Deals. The project is part of Local Green Deals, created by the European Commission's Intelligent Cities Challenge.

Wastebuild Zero brengt het built environment netwerk samen om de nieuwste materialen, technieken, oplossingen en innovaties te showcasen die bijdragen aan een lagere CO2 uitstoot. Het doel is om de transitie naar een circulaire bouwsector te versnellen. Er worden ongeveer 1500 architecten, ontwikkelaars, beleidsmedewerkers verwacht uit met name Duitsland, Nederland en het VK.

AT&I heeft op de beursvloer een ‘Trade & Innovate Zone’ waar we ruimte bieden aan 8 bedrijven om zichzelf te showcasen. Heb je interesse, stuur me een berichtje!

• Specifiek verder willen uitbreiden in Noordrijn-Westfalen

Wat kun je verwachten op 8 maart?

Tijdens deze missie krijg je een overzicht van:

1. Belangrijke lokale stakeholders en hun rol in de sector
2. (Nieuwe) regelgeving omtrent duurzaam bouwen, inclusief financiering
3. Tips voor zakendoen in Noordrijn-Westfalen
4. Specifieke marktkansen, bijvoorbeeld lopende/toekomstige aanbestedingen, ontwikkelingsprojecten en innovatieprojecten

Daarnaast krijg je inzicht in de huidige stand van zaken in deze regio, door middel van een bezoek aan bouwprojecten in Düsseldorf en Krefeld die hoog scoren op het gebied van duurzaamheid. Tot slot bieden we tijdens deze handelsmissie netwerkmomenten met stakeholders in Noordrijn-Westfalen.

Momenteel wordt gewerkt aan het programma.

Let op: aangezien we op 8 maart vroeg beginnen, dienen deelnemers op 7 maart aan te reizen richting Düsseldorf.

Deze missie wordt georganiseerd door FME in samenwerking met InnovationQuarter, Amsterdam Trade & Innovate, ROM Utrecht Region, en partners in de regio Noordrijn Westfalen.

16 maart 2023 - Lezing - Eerste hulp bij energie besparen
Is jouw energierekening ook zo hoog en ben je benieuwd naar hoe je jouw verbruik kan verminderen? In deze lezing vertelt Elisah Pals, oprichter van Zero Waste Nederland, hoe je het klimaat én je portemonnee een handje helpt door te leven zonder afval. Tijdens The Change Game onderzoeken we in samenwerking met Danielle Arets en Jessie Harms hoe we onze omgeving duurzamer, veiliger en groener maken. Hoe kunnen we onze dorpen, steden en gemeenschappen aanpassen aan hetveranderende klimaat. Het spel onderzoekt welke mogelijkheden erzijn om leefomgevingen klimaat adaptief te maken en welke thema’s hierbij belangrijk zijn. Lees meer.

13 april 2023 - Lezing - Kernenergie: kans of bedreiging?
Hoe zorgen we voor voldoende energie én bestrijden we de gevolgen van klimaatverandering? Hoewel het aandeel van duurzame energie stijgt, wordt het grootste deel van de Nederlandse elektriciteit nog altijd uit fossiele brandstoffen gewonnen. Kan kernenergie een oplossing bieden voor een CO2-neutrale samenleving? De meningen over dit controversiële onderwerp lopen flink uiteen.

In deze lezing vertelt Behnam Taebi (professor Energie & Klimaatethiek TU Delft) over de wortels van de technologie in de militaire toepassing, over het risico op ongelukken en over de impact van radioactief afval. Lees meer.

De vergroening van Nederland kan bijvoorbeeld zorgen voor vervuiling elders ter wereld. En gezinnen met een hoger inkomen kunnen zich vaak beter beschermen tegen de negatieve effecten van milieuvervuiling, bijvoorbeeld door luchtfilters aan te schaffen. Daphina Misiedjan (universitair docent, jurist en onderzoeker ISS/Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam) legt in deze lezing uit dat klimaatongelijkheid een wereldwijd probleem is dat op alle niveaus zichtbaar is en wat we kunnen doen om de kloof in te perken.

Nieuwe tariefstructuren: een prikkel voor slimme sturing?
De netbeheerders pleiten voor een nieuwe tariefstructuur waarmee het voorkomen van piekbelasting beloond wordt. Dit is nodig wegens de toename van zonnepanelen, warmtepompen en laadpalen. Fons Jansen van Enexis gaat in plannen voor een bandbreedtemodel: binnen de bandbreedte kan je zonder extra kosten elektriciteit afnemen, kom je erboven dan betaal je een hoger nettarief.

Twee inspirerende Powerpitches:
Brendan de Graaf van Lyv biedt bedrijven, particulieren en communities geavanceerde energiediensten, waarmee men een financieel voordeel kan behalen en
overbelasting van het stroomnetwerk kan vermijden. Het bedrijf biedt een
combinatie van Software-as-a-Service oplossingen in combinatie en met
batterijsystemen.

Joost Brand van Borg Energy maakt duurzame warmte-opslag schaalbaar en haalbaar. Op dagen met een overvloed aan zonne- en windenergie slaan ze warmte op in een buffervat, om deze op dagen met weinig zon en wind te gebruiken. Het eerste werkende prototype is de grond in gegaan bij de Green Village.

Collectieve zelfconsumptie van zonne-energie?
Woningbezitters met een eigen dak kunnen zelf opgewekte zonne-energie salderen, terwijl huishoudens in bijvoorbeeld een appartementencomplex met een collectief dak deze voordelen niet hebben. Aliene van der Veen van TNO deed onderzoek naar
mogelijkheden om dit eerlijker te organiseren. Zij presenteert het rapport
“Collectieve zelfconsumptie: een bouwsteen om het maatschappelijk draagvlak
voor de energietransitie te vergroten?”.

Smart mobility and LEV’s: a general introduction

 #Smart-Mobility is an important aspect for daily life and commuting/recurrent transportation needs and in this day&age there are many potential solution(s) for smart-mobility in Amsterdam. Today some of these new vehicles types are mostly restricted on city streets and Amsterdam citizens cannot grasp the potential of this vehicles. These devices can go up to at least 20km of range for short trips and with vehicle speeds ranging from 20, 25, 45 km/h (e-scooter, e-bike, moped respectively) and some as far as 90km/h (micro-car 90), etc.

Potential CO2 emission reduction research

There is a study regarding CO2 potential emission reduction by the use of light electric vehicles (LEV's) in contrast to short car trips usage. LEV's CO2 emissions is averaged at 24g CO2 eq/km compared with conventional vehicles (including EV's) averaged at 203g CO2 eq/km. The findings are quite relevant since it could reduce CO2 emissions as much as 44% = 57 million tones CO2 eq per year. The full study can be found at URL link below.

Proposal

If the Gemeente Amsterdam would lift the ban on LEV’s, this would be beneficial for Amsterdam citizens since they would have less noise (silent devices), cleaner air (by the study analysis) and maybe more fun alternative to ICE-scooters and cars.

Wat is jouw droom voor Amsterdam?
“Dat water voor Amsterdammers meer waarde heeft. Dat we het meer respecteren. Nu is het zo vanzelfsprekend dat er water uit de kraan komt, zoveel en wanneer we maar willen. En we gaan naar het toilet, of onder de douche, of zetten de afwasmachine aan, en voor de bewoners is het water weg. Het zou fijn zijn als de hele cyclus meer circulair is. Dat afvalwater niet langer iets is wat vies is, maar dat we het gaan zien als een grondstof die we graag willen hergebruiken. Wat nou als je bij de bouwmarkt een toilet kan kopen die jouw urine apart houdt en daar meststof uithaalt die je zelf in je tuin kan gebruiken of af kan geven alsof het een statiegeldsysteem is. Dan krijgt het zoveel meer waarde.”

On 10 February during the CE Week there is an opportunity to help the community of the International Green Deal Circular Festivals! Beside the facilitating Dutch Ministries of IenW and EZK now consisting of 20 large international festivals. Lowlands/MOJO, Body & Soul, Awakenings, Roskilde, Milkshake, ID&T, Zwarte Cross, DGTL, Pukkelpop, Vierdaagsfeesten… just a few examples of large European festivals participating.

The focus of the workshop will be on how to become climate neutral as festival, through their efforts to become circular: two sides of the same coin. Why is action needed now, what can festivals do and how to set concrete targets? Together these international front runners join forces to give direction to a sustainable and resilient future for the live sector. Moreover as perfect living labs, festivals can inspire visitors, cities and other events to join this green movement!

Om dieper in te gaan op de mogelijkheden van circulair bouwen, organiseren we samen met de provincie Noord-Holland een online circulaire inspiratietour waarbij we ‘langsgaan’ bij belangrijke spelers in de circulaire bouwsector. Samen bespreken we de voordelen, uitdagingen en mogelijkheden voor bedrijven om het meeste uit circulaire bouweconomie te halen.

De bouw vormt de grootste materiaalopslag en afvalstroom in de economie. Elk jaar wordt alleen al in de Metropoolregio Amsterdam 1,4 miljoen ton sloopmateriaal verwerkt, met een potentiële waarde van €688 miljoen. Tegelijkertijd drukt de productie van nieuw bouwmateriaal zwaar op het milieu. Met hoogwaardige recycling, demontabel én modulair bouwen kan die waarde benut worden en het milieu worden gespaard.

Circulair bouwen betekent het ontwikkelen, gebruiken en hergebruiken van gebouwen, gebieden en infrastructuur, zonder natuurlijke hulpbronnen onnodig uit te putten, de leefomgeving te vervuilen en ecosystemen aan te tasten. Bouwen op een wijze die economisch verantwoord is en bijdraagt aan het welzijn van mens en dier.

Kansen

De bouw heeft zoveel facetten, dat bedrijven en bestuurders met veel strategieën aan de slag kunnen om de bouw circulairder te maken. Vijf belangrijke methodes zijn:

• Hoogwaardig recyclen van sloopafval, zodat er minder primaire grondstoffen nodig zijn;
• Administreren van materialen, zodat waarde van grondstoffen behouden blijft;
• Demontabel bouwen, zodat onderdelen van een gebouw hergebruikt kunnen worden;
• Modulair bouwen, zodat gebouwen aangepast kunnen worden aan nieuwe functies;
• Ontwerpen voor collectief gebruik, zodat bewoners gebouwen en spullen kunnen delen.

Het afgelopen jaar verschenen er tal van rapporten over digitalisering en technologisering. Maar wat kunnen we daarmee in 2022? Welke lessen kunnen we trekken voor de slimme stad? Welke ideeën kunnen ons gaan inspireren in dit nieuwe smartcityjaar?

Dit soort gesprekken voer je normaal gesproken als je elkaar tegenkomt tijdens een nieuwjaarsborrel, een congres of een andere netwerkbijeenkomst. Helaas kan dit nu even niet fysiek, maar gelukkig laat het digitale ons niet in de steek. Zo kunnen we toch met elkaar nieuwe kennis delen en verspreiden.

Daarom is de Future City Foundation op zoek gegaan naar de makers en bedenkers achter de rapporten. Zo gaan we op 26 januari in gesprek met deelfietsgoeroe van Nederland Ronald Haverman en laten ons door zijn ideeën inspireren.

Achttien jaar geleden was het nog een utopie: fietsen die je kunt delen. Niet voor Ronald Haverman, de bedenker van een van de eerste deelfietsen ter wereld: de (inmiddels bekende) OV-fiets.

Maar wat is de volgende innovatie? Want Haverman is nog lang niet klaar met oplossingen bedenken. Hij is inmiddels werkzaam als mobiliteitsstrateeg bij de provincie Zuid-Holland en deelt op 26 januari zijn ideeën over hoe deelmobiliteit een oplossing kan zijn voor ruimtegebrek en een meer duurzame samenleving.

Hoe ziet hij dat voor zich? Hoe zet je bijvoorbeeld slimme oplossingen als geofencing in om deelmobiliteit optimaal te laten werken? Wat is de volgende OV-fiets?

The seventh edition of the series Better cities. The contribution of digital technology is about forecasts, trends and signals regarding the role of technology in the development of cities, as seen by Cornell University's Future of Urban Tech-project. The Dutch versions of this and other already published posts are here.

A source of new insights

Technology has changed the planet for better and for worse. Will this change continue, and which direction will dominate? To answer this question, scientists at the Jacobs Institute at Cornell University in New York developed a horizon scan, named The Future of Urban Tech. At first, they made a content analysis of hundreds of recent scientific publications, from which they distilled 217 signals. These signals were grouped into 49 trends, full of contradictions. Each trend is tagged with an indication of time frame, probability, and societal impact. In the end, they modeled six forecasts. These describe dominant directions for change.

Readers can use the site in their own way. I started from the 17 sectors such as built environment, logistics, mobility, and energy and explored the related trends. It is also possible to start top-down with one of the six forecasts and examine its plausibility considering the related trends and signals. I will show below that each of the forecasts is challenging and invites further reading.

Content selection is supported by dynamic graphics, which connect all signals, trends and forecasts and enable the reader to see their interrelationships. Just start scrolling, unleash your curiosity and decide after some explorations how to proceed more systematically.

The website briefly describes each of the forecasts, trends, and signals. Each signal reflects the content of a handful of (popular) scientific publications, which are briefly summarized. Read the articles that intrigue you or limit yourself to the summary.

Below I will explain some aspects of the content of the project, followed by some caveats.

Six forecasts

The forecasts reflect the multiplicity of views in contemporary scientific literature, stimulating readers to form a judgment. The wording of the forecasts is reproduced in abbreviated form below.

1. All buildings, houses, means of transport, infrastructure, but also trees and parks will be connected with sensors and cameras and form one web.
Many buildings, buses, trains, and roads are already equipped with digital detection, but they are not linked yet up at city scale. The next decade will change this, which will, for example, mean a breakthrough in the management of energy flows, but also raise questions regarding privacy.

2. Cities will use advanced biotechnology to take livability to new heights.
Growing understanding of human dependence on nature will lead to mapping the physical-biological world as well as its threats and its blessings to humans. City authorities will equip trees, parks, and waterways with sensors to measure and control the vitality of ecosystems.

3. Resilient corridors will mitigate the impact of climate change, but citizens will be prepared for the inevitable shocks to come.
Cities will reduce CO2 emissions but also prepare for the inevitable consequences of climate change. Political and financial centers of power will be concentrated in places where the impact of climate change can be controlled by technical means.

4. Artificial neural networks provide advanced forms of machine learning with unparalleled predictive capabilities that will bring order to the chaos of urban life.
Machine learning and artificial intelligence will become inscrutable black boxes that make decisions without giving explanations. The ultimate questions are whether the machines to which we outsource our decisions can still be controlled themselves and whether the impact of spontaneous encounters and human ideas disappears if computers produce the best solutions after all?

5. New Screen Deal that redistributes the risks and benefits of urban technology.
“Everything remote” – learning, healthcare, work, and entertainment – is becoming the new normal. The predictive power of AI will lead to conflicts over the concentration of wealth and power that digital platforms cause. But on the other hand, new stakeholders will focus on equity.

6. A global supply chain for city-building technologies will 'crack the code of the city'.
In the smart cities-movement there is a tension between top-down and bottom-up, between proprietary versus open and between Big Tech and Makers. A new urban innovation industry will take dominance but will be more attuned to societal concerns. Governments, in turn, will have a clearer picture of the problems that the industry needs to solve. A public-private structure for investments and governance is indispensable to counter the power of Big Tech.

A few notes

As mentioned, each of the six forecasts is based on trends. Nine trends, in the case of the latest forecast mentioned above. Each trend is illustrated by a handful of signals, documented by various publications. One of the nine trends supporting the latter forecast is “Regional clustering from enterprises to ecosystems”, for example New York, London, Berlin, and Amsterdam. This refers to the growing power of local technology hubs, supported by regional capital and involving governments, start-ups, knowledge institutions and citizens. This concentration could even lead to a new “space race” between cities instead of countries. However, the underlying signals show that this "trend" is more open-ended and uncertain than its description warrants.

I went through many publications documenting the signals and concluded that "trends" essentially map the bandwidth within developments within a domain will occur. To me, this does not detract from the value of the exercise, because the more doubts there are about the future and the more insights we have into the forces that shape it, the more opportunities we have to influence the future.

As the six forecasts must match the open nature of the trends, I have reformulated each of these forecasts as pairs of conflicting directions for development.

1. The commercial or political interests behind urban technology versus the well-being and privacy of citizens.

2. The struggle between 'Big Tech' versus (supra)national political over leadership over technological development.

3. The infusion of technology into all domains of society versus acceptance of unpredictable outcomes of human interactions resulting from creativity, inner motives, and intuitive decisions.

4. Controlling nature through biotechnology versus restoring a balance between humans and natural ecosystems.

5. The concentration of power, political influence, and wealth through control over technology versus open licensing that allows technology to be used for the benefit of the entire world population.

6. Autonomous decision-making through machine learning and artificial intelligence versus the primacy of democratic and decentralized decision-making over the application of technology.

Studying the Future of Urban Tech-project has been a rich and thought-provoking learning experience and has helped fueling the insights underlying this series.
