I am writing to introduce myself as a final year student studying Science and Management of Tourism. Currently, I am working on my thesis which focuses on the topic of how intelligent technologies are used by Destination Management Organizations (DMOs) of smart destinations to manage tourist flows : Case studies of Amsterdam and Venise.
As part of my research, I am seeking information on the use of smart technologies and their effectiveness, as well as data collection methods. I understand the sensitivity of this subject and assure you that any information shared will remain completely anonymous.
If you or anyone in your organization has knowledge or expertise in this area, I would be grateful for the opportunity to learn from you. From 28 February to 31 March, you can submit your proposal for one of the challenges to CommuniCity for a chance to win a €12,500 grant to test your idea in practice.

How does it work?

• Companies or organisations submit their proposal via the CommuniCity website;
• The submissions are assessed against the set criteria and thus the winners are selected;
• The winning entries receive a grant of 12,500 euros to develop and test their solution together with the target group in Amsterdam.

Op woensdag 22 februari heeft de Green Innovation Hub in Almere officieel zijn deuren geopend. De publiek-private samenwerking tussen de Gemeente Almere, Provincie Flevoland en telecombedrijf VodafoneZiggo richt zich op de ontwikkeling van digitale innovaties op het gebied van bouw, voedsel, energie, mobiliteit en (digitale) inclusie.

Almere bouwt de komende vijftien jaar 130.000 nieuwe woningen. Daarnaast wil de gemeente in 2030 klimaatneutraal zijn. Hiervoor is integrale, duurzame en inclusieve gebiedsontwikkeling belangrijk.

Broedplaats
De Green Innovation Hub is een broedplaats voor ontmoeting, samenwerking en innovatie. Partijen ontwikkelen digitale oplossingen voor een gezonde stadsomgeving, lokale voedselzekerheid, mobiliteit, circulair bouwen, energiedistributie en sociale verbondenheid tussen stadsbewoners. Gezamenlijke innovaties worden getest en opgeschaald op speciale ‘greenfield' locaties.

Open ecosysteem
De Green Innovation Hub is een broedplaats voor ontmoeting, samenwerking en innovatie. Met de Green Innovation Hub in het hart van de stad laten we zien hoe belangrijk duurzame en inclusieve gebiedsontwikkeling voor ons is.”
Gedeputeerde Jan Nico Appelman: “Provincie Flevoland ondersteunt van harte de Green Innovation Hub: een plek waar samenwerken, innoveren en ontmoeten centraal staat. Digitalisering én duurzaamheid zijn twee thema’s die belangrijk zijn voor de ontwikkeling onze provincie. Hiermee past de Hub ook uitstekend in de groeiambitie van Almere."

Vragen van morgen
Laura van Gestel, directeur duurzaamheid van VodafoneZiggo: “Als telecombedrijf willen we onze impact op het milieu hebben gehalveerd in 2025. Tegelijk willen we twee miljoen mensen vooruithelpen in de samenleving. Hoe gaan we in de toekomst wonen en werken? Welke rol kunnen we daarin spelen? Belangrijke vragen die grote thema’s raken als zorg en mobiliteit, maar ook klimaatverandering en sociale ongelijkheid. Met de Green Innovation Hub willen we samen oplossingen ontwikkelen voor de vragen van morgen.”

Neem het heft in eigen handen en word onafhankelijk van de extractieve businessmodellen van grote bedrijven die een cloud aanbieden. Tijdens Waag Open op donderdag 2 maart leer je hoe je de cloud verlaat door je eigen server te bouwen.

Als we nu willen samenwerken aan dezelfde bestanden, dan werken we vaak in de cloud. De cloud laat ons gemakkelijk bestanden delen, videogesprekken voeren en meetings inplannen in elkaars agenda. De cloud is een service die meestal door een bedrijf wordt geleverd. Het verbindt en synchroniseert verschillende computers met elkaar.

De term ‘cloud’ is vaag en impliceert iets lichts en immaterieels. Klopt dat wel? Achter een cloud liggen fysieke ruimtes vol met servers, kabels, computers en infrastructuur. Er is niks licht, immaterieel of mystiek aan een datacenter.

Alles wat je op Google Drive opslaat, wordt geanalyseerd om een profiel over je te maken, wat uiteindelijk wordt verkocht om je gepersonaliseerde reclame te tonen. Veel mensen zijn zich wel bewust van dit soort praktijken. Maar hoe ontsnap je aan dit soort ogenschijnlijke 'gratis' tools. Voor veel mensen geldt dat het gevaar van extractieve businessmodellen niet opweegt tegen het gemak van de gebruiksvriendelijke interfaces van een service zoals Google Drive.

Om het heft terug in eigen hand te nemen gaan we tijdens deze Waag Open aan de slag met het bouwen van je eigen server. Vroeger het domein van code-ninjas en nachtelijke nerds, maar nu voor iedereen binnen handbereik. Tijdens de workshop laat Douwe Schmidt zien hoe je je eigen server inricht, onderhoudt en gebruikt.

• Een laptop met MacOS of Linux (helaas is er geen Windows support)
• Een oplader of volledig opgeladen accu

Iets dat je altijd al hebt willen uitproberen, zoals de 3D-printer in het FabLab, of juist iets dat je nooit had verwacht, zoals uitpluizen hoe DNA in elkaar zit in ons biotech-lab. Waag Open vindt plaats in (een van) de maakplaatsen op de eerste en tweede verdieping van het historische Waaggebouw op de Nieuwmarkt.

Interested in hearing more about Smart Building Maintenance? Feel welcome to join the public defense of the PhD thesis “Crafting Intrapreneurial Stewardship – An institutional perspective on client-led innovation in smart building maintenance“ by Koos Johannes, PhD student in the department of Construction Management. The defense will take place on the 16th of January at 10:30 AM at the Waaier building at the campus of the University of Twente.

About the the PhD thesis
Available research suggests that construction clients, as building owner-occupier, are struggling to implement smart maintenance. This thesis assumes that these reported problems are due to a failure to fully understand the institutional complexities of smart maintenance commissioning in organizational networks. Hence, the aim of this thesis was to improve our understanding of these complexities and to develop theoretical and practical knowledge on the professionalization of construction clients in commissioning smart maintenance through stewardship. Stewardship theory portrays managers and employees as collectivists, pro-organizational and trustworthy, and can be used for designing collaborations based on intrinsic motivation and trust.

The defense will take place on the 16th of January at 10.30 AM at the Waaier building at the campus of the University of Twente.

De stad hangt vol met sensoren zoals camera’s, geluidsmeters en verkeertellers. De gemeente Amsterdam gebruikt deze sensoren om de stad veilig, schoon en leefbaar te houden. Daarbij is de privacy van haar inwoners heel belangrijk. Daarom werkt de gemeente aan duidelijke richtlijnen over de inzet van sensoren. Om dat goed te doen, vragen we de mening van bewoners over dit onderwerp.
 
We nodigen u van harte uit mee te denken. Daarvoor organiseren we bijeenkomsten. Daar kunt u in gesprek met de gemeente en met mede-Amsterdammers over sensoren op straat. We vragen u om ideeën, om ons te laten weten wat u belangrijk vindt. En welke rol u van de gemeente verwacht. Uw ideeën gebruiken we om ons beleid beter te maken. En om te checken of we aandacht geven aan de juiste zaken. We zorgen voor een goede open sfeer. En we verzorgen hapjes en drankjes.

Data Dilemmas is a collaboration between Amsterdam Smart City and the City of Amsterdam’s Data Lab. During Data Dilemmas, we explore the possibilities for using data and new technologies to address urban and societal challenges, with a focus on responsible digitalization. The goal is to use data to make cities more safe, clean and accessible. But what happens to all the data that is collected? Which dilemmas do we encounter when we collect (personal) data to improve the city? These questions are important for everyone: governments, knowledge institutions, companies, and civil society. In the latest edition of Data Dilemmas, hosted on the 29th of September 2022, we invited Joep Meindertsma, Tom van Arman and Jan van Boesschoeten to take us through the experiences, dilemmas and lessons learned from the Amsterdam Data Exchange (AMdEX) initiative. Marit Hoefsloot from Waag gave a critical reflection on the presented Data Dilemmas.

Joep Meindertsma (Dexes) – Introduction to AMdEX
AMdEX is a collaboration between the Amsterdam Economic Board, AMS-IX, Dexes, the University of Amsterdam and Surf. AMdEX aims to give people more control over their data through a secure, trusted and neutral infrastructure which enables sharing data under specific conditions. AMdEX has two missions: give people more control over their data and make it more attractive to share data. These two missions are a data dilemma in itself.

Data exchange is currently monopolized by a handful of major players and the web is more centralized than ever before. The direct connections between people and organisations have become fewer. This is because we’re increasingly using middle-men, services between the data source and the user. Joep explains: “If you want to see someone’s vacation photos, you have to send a request to Facebook. Facebook owns the data, decides who can access it and dictates what the app looks like”. This problem is not limited to vacation photos or Facebook. It is about all our data. Almost all services are middle-men, with its own closed way of data sharing. This creates data silos – places where data is effectively locked away.

Joep refers to three types of data: “data we want to share, data we don’t want to share, and data we might want to share.” This ‘might share’ category often contains valuable data, but it can be costly or difficult to share. Set conditions makes sharing this data easier. AMdEX makes this possible through a few software projects they’re currently building: eFlint (a new language to describe legal constructs), DexPod (an open source personal data server) and Atomic Data (a specification and open source software to improve data interoperability).

Tom van Arman (Tapp) - AMdEX case study: Marineterrein Sensor Data
Meanwhile, the Marineterrein in Amsterdam is full of sensors, collecting all kinds of data. Think of MicroLAN measuring the water quality, or Public Eye collecting crowd data. Marineterrein is a ‘living lab’, where technologies that contribute to a sustainable and future-proof city can be tested. Together with AMdEX, Tom looked at how the collected data can be made accessible to third parties, such as researchers, journalists, students, artists and entrepreneurs. The Marineterrein and the data collectors, for example Public Eye, set conditions for the data to be used. Tom describes how this works in practice: “If a journalist is interested in using crowd data collected by Public Eye, they must be a member of the Marineterrein community and subscribed to AMdEX. If the journalists meets these requirements, they will receive an AMdEX email with a data download link.”

Jan van Boesschoeten (AMS-IX) - The Future of AMdEX
As Joep and Tom already mentioned, there are many questions around data: who owns the data, what are you allowed to do with it? How do you work together with your competitors to get more value out of your data? A data exchange can be a solution to these questions. This is why AMS-IX, a neutral member-based association that operates multiple interconnection platforms, is connected to AMdEX. Jan shortly describes the future of the AMdEX initiative. The field lab with use cases ends in June 2023, and at that time AMdEX also aims to be a legal entity. Additionally, one of their use cases involving KLM will be presented at AMS-IX’s MORE-IP community event in June. After that, AMdEX will onboard new use cases.

Marit Hoefsloot (Waag) – A critical reflection on the Dilemmas encountered in AMdEX
Last but not least, Marit Hoefsloot from Waag reflects on the dilemma’s presented by Joep, Tom and Jan. Marit describes that the use of data is often seen as an act of notion, whilst privacy is more of a passive notion (not using the data at all). However, it’s possible to use data whilst also protecting ones privacy. A good example of this is IRMA, a privacy-friendly digital wallet which can be used for authentication. As Marit pleads: “Data usage and privacy are not necessarily contradictory, it is about both.” Organisations should see protecting privacy as their own responsibility, instead of giving the illusion of consent with an opt-in or opt-out option.

The second dilemma Marit reflects on is about developer productivity vs. standardisation. Standardisation takes a lot of time, which takes away from innovation and productivity. However, you need standardisation to develop these kind of exchange platforms, as there are many organisations that are involved. Marit describes that the real questions we should talk about are: what is the flexibility of the standard? Do we create the standard together, or more top-down through legislation? Who are we standardizing for? “We should prioritise standardisation, but do it in an open and inclusive way.”

‘Als je denkt dat je de quantummechanica begrijpt, dan heb je het niet begrepen.’ Dat stelde de quantumgeleerde Richard Feynman. Quantumcomputers zijn snel, krachtig en revolutionair, als je de experts moet geloven. Maar het mysterie rondom de technologie lijkt bijna wel kunstmatig gecreëerd en in stand gehouden. Tijdens het vrijdagprogramma van het Better Future Now Festival gaan we in de Waag in gesprek vanuit verschillende invalshoeken.

Wat zijn de mogelijke toepassingen voor de samenleving en de gevolgen daarvan? Wat hebben we er als mensheid aan? Welke problemen gaat de technologie voor ons oplossen? De Nederlandse overheid investeert de komende jaren 615 miljoen euro om een leidende positie te verwerven op het gebied van quantumtechnologie. Maar waarom precies? Hoog tijd om eens te kijken naar de technologie vanuit een maatschappelijke bril.

Tijdens dit publieksprogramma, onderdeel van Better Future Now Festival, gaan we in gesprek vanuit verschillende invalshoeken. We krijgen een introductie in quantum, kijken naar impact op beleid en wie er straks aan de knoppen zullen zitten.

Due to uncertainty about security, privacy and data ownership, less than 1% of all data is actually used, shared and analysed. At the same time, as individuals and organisations we often give away our data – without even realising it. Large tech parties collect, process and use data to make a profit.

In response to these challenges, Amsterdam Data Exchange (AMdEX) aims to shape the future of a fair data economy where data owners can securely share their data. Central to AMdEX is the premise that data are not shared without permissions from data owner. What conditions would you set before sharing your personal data? Or competitively sensitive information? Or your research data? The session presents key experiences, dilemmas and lessons learned from the AMdEX initiative and invites the audience to contribute to the discussion.

About Data Dilemma Series
Data Dilemmas is a collaboration between Amsterdam Smart City and the City of Amsterdam’s Data Lab. Three times a year we explore the possibilities for using data and new technologies to address urban and societal challenges, with a focus on responsible digitalization. The goal is to use data to make cities more safe, clean and accessible. But what happens to all the data that is collected? Which dilemmas do we encounter when we collect (personal) data to improve the city? These questions are important for everyone: governments, knowledge institutions, companies, and civil society. Amsterdam Smart City would like to explore with you which decisions are needed for responsible use of data.

De mismatch op de arbeidsmarkt, door een kwalitatief en kwantitatief tekort aan de juiste talenten, is een groeiend probleem in de Metropool Amsterdam. Ons initatief TOMAS zorgt voor een structurele oplossing met een matching platform voor talentontwikkeling voor bedrijfsleven, onderwijs en overheden om samenwerkingspartners voor talentontwikkeling te vinden.

TOMAS geeft eenvoudig overzicht en toegang tot alle talentinitiatieven in de Metropool Amsterdam. Van Haarlem tot Hilversum en van Uitgeest tot Uithoorn. TOMAS staat voor Talent Ontwikkeling, Match & Select. Daarmee koppelen we vraag en aanbod van alle mogelijkheden voor omscholing, bijscholing en talentontwikkeling.

Hierdoor komen de juiste mensen met de juiste skills op de juiste plek. TOMAS is een samenwerking tussen gemeente Amsterdam, Hogeschool van Amsterdam | Digital Society School, Metropoolregio Amsterdam, StartupAmsterdam en Amsterdam Economic Board.

Online Marketing Communicatie expert: de functie

Het initiatief TOMAS is op zoek naar een tijdelijke communicatie expert (zzp’er) met sterke online marketing ervaring. Wij starten graag per direct voor 8-12 uur per week voor een periode van 5 maanden (augustus-december 2022).

Heb jij ervaring met online marketing & communicatie in arbeidsmarkt en onderwijs? Vind jij het een uitdaging om met behulp van campagnes en scherpe content partijen te mobiliseren en ze in contact te brengen met samenwerkingspartners voor talentontwikkeling? Heb je strategisch inzicht, ben je zeer bedreven met social media, SEO, een doener en neem je ook graag het voortouw? Bel ons.

Als Online Marketing Communicatie expert vervul je een belangrijke rol in het aantrekken van relevante doelgroepen, zoals werkgevers in de regio, om ze in contact te brengen met initiatieven voor talentontwikkeling en het promoten van TOMAS, een unieke B2B-tool voor bedrijven, kennisinstellingen en overheden. De focus is op initiatieven voor omscholing en bijscholing van tech en ICT-talent. Met de tool vinden bedrijven hun weg in het aanbod voor talentontwikkeling, zoals opleidingen voor tech-banen of omscholing naar ICT.

Samen met de kwartiermaker en de community manager van TOMAS en communicatie professionals van samenwerkingspartners werk je aan de marketing en communicatie. Jij pakt daarin de lead en maakt helder wie wat doet en wanneer.

Wie ben jij?

• Je bent een ervaren online marketing communicatie expert, je hebt een visie en kunt inhoud scherp en snel vertalen naar aansprekende communicatie voor diverse doelgroepen;
• Je bent behendig in het verzamelen en creëren van uitdagende en inspirerende content op maat per doelgroep (video, tekst, beeld);
• Je hebt ervaring in het doorvertalen van proposities en kpi’s naar een social strategie en campagnes/boodschappen;
• Je hebt veel ervaring met o.a. Google Analytics & Ads, SEO, SEA, Mailchimp, LinkedIn en WordPress;
• Je hebt bij voorkeur ervaring met design programma’s;
• Je hebt ruime aantoonbare ervaring (minimaal 5 jaar) als online marketing communicatieadviseur:
• Je beweegt je gemakkelijk in een complex speelveld;
• Je hebt affiniteit met de grote maatschappelijk uitdagingen van deze tijd;
• Je bent resultaatgericht, een zelfstarter, hands-on, flexibel, creatief, een team player en je hebt lef;
• Je neemt van nature graag de leiding;
• Je hebt wo/hbo werk en denkniveau, bijvoorbeeld op het gebied van communicatiewetenschap;
• Je beschikt over uitstekende mondelinge en schriftelijke vaardigheden in de Nederlandse en Engelse taal.

Wat ga je doen?

• Je communiceert over het doel en toegevoegde waarde van TOMAS naar relevante doelgroepen via de juiste kanalen;
• Je trekt relevante doelgroepen naar het platform en events;
• Je ontwikkelt nieuwswaardige en relevante content en je haalt aansprekende content op in het netwerk;
• Je ontwikkelt content voor socials, filmpjes, presentaties, nieuwsbrieven en uitnodigingen voor events en draagt actief bij aan de uitrol en het succes van de tool. De ontwikkeling hiervoor kan deels worden uitbesteed bij een vormgever/redacteur en doe je in samenwerking met communicatie professionals werkzaam bij de samenwerkingspartners.

Wat wij bieden

Wij bieden je een aanstelling voor de duur van 5 maanden (augustus – december) voor 1 tot 1,5 dag (ofwel 8-12 uur) per week. Standplaats is Marineterrein Amsterdam (kantoor Amsterdam Economic Board) / Thuiswerken. Uurtarief maximaal 80 euro per uur.

Wie is Amsterdam Economic Board?

Amsterdam Economic Board is hét netwerk van organisaties met wie je samenwerkt aan innovatie voor de slimme, groene en gezonde Metropool van Morgen. We werken samen met honderden organisaties uit de Metropool Amsterdam. Partijen die bepalend zijn op weg naar een nieuwe economie. Van bedrijven, tot kennis- en onderwijsinstellingen, gemeenten en provincies en maatschappelijke organisaties. Van klein tot groot. De focus is op thema’s die belangrijk zijn voor inwoners van de Metropool: duurzame en gezonde leefomgeving, waardevol werk voor iedereen en verantwoorde inzet van data en technologie. TOMAS is een van de initiatieven waar wij met onze partners aan werken.

We zijn trots bij de Hogeschool van Amsterdam met de benoeming van lector Nanda Piersma tot kroonlid van de Sociaal-Economische Raad (SER). De ministerraad stemde vrijdag in met haar benoeming. Het is de eerste keer dat een lector kroonlid wordt van de SER.

Piersma is benaderd vanwege haar expertise op het gebied van digitalisering. Volgens de SER is digitalisering in steeds meer kwesties actueel. Piersma is lector Responsible IT bij de HvA. Ook is zij wetenschappelijk directeur van het HvA Centre of Expertise Applied Artificial Intelligence. Daarnaast is Piersma betrokken bij verschillende landelijke netwerken rondom datawetenschap zoals het platform Praktijkgericht ICT-onderzoek (Prio) en de Nederlandse AI coalitie (NLAIC). Lees meer.

The fifth and final ICC City Lab will take place June 14 - 23. This special edition will focus on Local Ecosystems Mobilisation and Urban Innovation following feedback received from cities and experts on previous ICC City Labs.

The City Lab will launch on June 14th with sessions open to the ICC community and the public. Week 1 will be dedicated to mentor led Thematic Network sessions, where the ICC Mentor Cities will present successful solutions and good practices implemented in their cities. During week 2, the Peer Reviews sessions and Transversal Network sessions on Open Data and Public Procurement will be in the limelight. The closing event is scheduled for June 23rd.

As ICC mentor, the Amsterdam Metropolitan Region will contribute to the following sessions:
