Interactieve wandeling langs onze digitale wereld

Featured image

Elke week stijgt onze schermtijd.

Wanneer: Nu
Waar: Groningen, Maastricht, Amsterdam, Utrecht (Groenekan)
Afstand wandeling: gemiddeld 6 kilometer

Mini Docu: 'Transparent Charging Station'

Featured image

Algorithms are becoming increasingly important. For example, they influence how electricity is distributed amongst car charging stations. But during peak hours, who is allowed to load first and at what speed? And how do you know - as a user - what is happening and if the choices made are fair? To find answers to these questions, the Transparent Charging Station project was started in 2017. A short documentary on this topic has premiered on March 18th 2021.

Documentary 'Transparant Charging Station'
In this short documentary, six experts talk about the origin, development and future of the Transparent Charging Station. The documentary was made possible by Knowledge and Innovation Center ElaadNL, Municipality of Amsterdam, Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions, The Incredible Machine and TU Delft.

With: designer Marcel Schouwenaar, initiator Thijs Turèl, scientist Kars Alfrink, Smart Mobility expert Ruben Polderman, behavioral researcher Lotte Gardien and software engineer Ton Smets.

Dutch Applied AI Award 🙌🏻

Featured image

Last year, during the Month of the AAI in November, the Centre of Expertise Applied Artificial Intelligence (Hogeschool van Amsterdam) presented the Dutch Applied AI Award for the first time. This year we are back for a second edition. The award is part of the Computable Awards and is for suppliers of AI solutions, start-ups in the AI field and good examples of the implementation of AI.

This award is jointly organized with the Hogeschool van Amsterdam , Computable and podcast De Dataloog . You can nominate an individual or organisation, based on a project you think has stood out in the past 12 months.

This will be the 16th year in a row that Computable will present the Computable Awards in October 2021. These prizes are awarded to companies, projects and individuals who, according to Computable readers, have clearly distinguished themselves in the past year.

An independent jury of experts will select five nominees for each award from the nominated parties. The ranking by the jury and the number of votes from Computable readers each determine half of which nominee will receive the award in October. The number of times a party is nominated for a nomination does not play a role, but the quality of the substantiation and information about the project mentioned does.

Nominate a project/solution/company for the Dutch Applied AI Awards

About the Centre of Expertise Applied AI
The CoE Applied AI encompasses all of the HvA's AI research and education activities. This centre drives the development of applications of AI technology in a responsible and inclusive manner. AI technology and its implications for companies, organisations, governments and people can only be understood in context and through experimentation. Each faculty of the HvA has created a lab that brings research, education and practices together to solve short and middle term challenges in the application of AI.

Update Intelligent Cities Challenge & Opportunities To Get Involved

Featured image

The 100 Intelligent Cities Challenge (ICC) is a European Commission (EC) initiative that supports 136 cities with using cutting-edge technologies to lead the intelligent, green and socially responsible recovery. The goal is to accelerate ICC cities and their local ecosystems as engines for post-pandemic recovery, creating new jobs and strengthening citizen participation and wellbeing.

The Amsterdam Metropolitan Area, represented by Amsterdam Economic Board and Amsterdam Smart City (ASC), has joined the ICC as a mentor region. A key task for ASC is to connect and share best practices from the Amsterdam region with the ICC network.

Here are a few of the upcoming opportunities for ASC partners and community members who would like to get involved in the ICC:

  1. Sharing best practices during the 3rd ICC City Lab, May 18 – May 21: During this four day event, ASC partners have the opportunity to contribute to various knowledge and working sessions across a range of topics including: circular economy and Local Green Deals (LGD’s), energy efficient renovation, digitalization of government services, digital twins, and citizen participation.
  2. Contributing to Tech4Good Marketplace:Within the scope of ICC, the EC is developing a digital platform where cities can share their experience and recommendations for validated and deployed smart city solutions.  During the April - June timeframe, ASC will collect transferable solutions and best practices from the Amsterdam Region which will be shared on the Marketplace.
  3. Advise on the development of the European Interoperability Framework for Smart Cities and Communities (EIF4SCC): Acknowledging the importance of interoperability for smart cities and communities, the EC contracted Deloitte and KU Leuven University to develop a proposal for a European Interoperability Framework. The aim of the EIF4SCC is to provide European local administration leaders with definitions, principles, recommendations (including practical use cases) and a common model that enables public service delivery across domains, cities, regions and borders.  The first draft of the Framework is open for stakeholder consultation via the following survey until April 12.

Seeking job and research opportunity in urban planning, urban devlopment and smart city

Recently I have graduated in urban planning, and I am looking for job or research opportunities in the Netherlands. Earlier I was a guest researcher at Technical University of Eindhoven (TUe) and University of California- Santa Barbara. The focus point of my interests is navigating information and communication technologies (ICTs) and their spatial effects in different urban subsystems (especially transportation and mobility, autonomous vehicles) toward Smart city, as a vision.
I would appreciate your advice if you know any opportunities in the Netherlands.

MozFest: wereldwijd online festival over open, menselijk en gezond internet

Featured image

PhD thesis project

I am a PhD in Urban planning. The vision of my work is facilitating the smart city. I am interested in understanding the mechanism of spatial effects that happen during time by applying ICTs in urban subsystems. By ICTs, I mean services and devices which function based on information and communication technologies. Spatial effects also refer to the changes in the activity-travel behavior, parking lots, land uses, urban sprawl, logistics sprawl, housing location choices, population density, building density, core-peripheral distribution pattern, traffic flows and land per capita.
I think now we are at the beginning of the fourth industrial revolution. Does it make
effects similar to effects which we observed after the third industrial revolution (urban sprawl, land use change, networks of highways and mass of pollution by private cars)? I believe that the synergy between robotics, nanotechnologies and the new generation of ICTs (e.g., Autonomous vehicles, navigation apps, digital
twins, internet of things and augmented reality) has the potential to make primary and secondary effects which change the current patterns and conceptions of urban planners and urban policymakers about cities.

Citizen Voices of Digital Rights - Publieke Dialoog over digitale rechten met wethouder Touria Meliani

Iedereen deelt data.

The 100 Intelligent Cities Challenge

Featured image

The 100 Intelligent Cities Challenge (ICC) is a European Commission initiative that supports 136 cities in using cutting-edge technologies to lead the intelligent, green and socially responsible recovery. The ICC cities and their local ecosystems will be engines for the recovery of their local economy, create new jobs, and strengthen citizen participation and wellbeing.

The ICC is part of a wider EU support system that recognises the importance of delivering on the promises made by the European Green Deal, the digital strategy, and other EU policies. It looks to move towards a more  digital, service-oriented and low-carbon economy, supported by a knowledge-based society, that enables circular economy systems through ‘local value loops’, evidence-based reskilling, and sustainable investments.

Participating cities receive one-to-one strategic advice from international experts on fine thematic strands: green economy and local green deals, improving the citizen participation and the digitalisation of public administration, green and digital transition in tourism, resilience of local supply chains, up- and reskilling of the workforce.  ICC Cities are also supported by transversal services on access to data, access to finance and through a marketplace full of innovative solutions.

The Amsterdam Region, represented by Amsterdam Economic Board and Amsterdam Smart City (ASC) is one of the ICC mentor regions, alongside European mentor cities Aarhus, Antwerp, Barcelona, Espoo, Hamburg, Nice, Porto, Rijeka and international mentors Medellin, Singapore and Toronto.  By participating in the ICC, the Amsterdam Region will share its experience and learn from other best practices related to multi-stakeholder collaboration, innovation ecosystems, circular economy and citizen participation.
