Building a shared vision of the city - with LEGO!

Building the largest interactive LEGO model of the future city ever!

Imagine a model of the city; however, instead of a literal representation, this is a sculpture that holds ideas and dreams from citizens, policymakers, entrepreneurs and visitors about what the city might be like after we solve major transitional challenges (e.g. sustainability, energy, equality, smart).

What would it feel like to be in this city? What do people wish this future city to become?

the goal
A model of the city that contains the ideas that a diverse group of people have about how the city might emerge from major transitional change like climate adaptation, sustainability, equality, smart. Imagine the city from what might be and what opportunity change offers.

the form
A room-sized model built with LEGO in a public space and with interactivity (e.g. app / QR link / AR) to share the stories that this model contains.

the process
Lego is an powerful way to evoke and capture stories about how people think about something. Through a series of workshops, people from all parts of the city will be invited to share how they think about the future of the city and capture their stories in a collective model. An interactive installation opens up those stories to passers-by and other participants.

Marineterrein Amsterdam joins the Amsterdam Smart City network (in Dutch)

Featured image

Leren in real life

ASC Demoday Digital City x Energy

Featured image

Demodays are part of our innovation process and intended to boost the progress of the various innovation projects, put requests for help on the table, share dilemmas and involve others in your projects or challenges. We host them every 8-10 weeks.

Invitations are sent but we're always open to adding a few new names to the list. The event is in Dutch.

During Demo days, community members pitch projects and ask for input. In small groups we work on concrete questions. We organize workshops with our partners to get a step further in the process. All in a very positive, open and cheerful vibe.

This time on the agenda:

Pitches:

Zoncoalitie
Originating from the Amsterdam Smart City network, the Zoncoalitie (Solar Coalition) exists for 6 years now. The Zoncoalitie, an association of providers, wants to ensure that every large roof in the Netherlands is used for generating solar energy. Where are they currently working on and what can they do for our network?

LEAP – Amsterdam Economic Board
The goal of LEAP is to accelerate the transition to a sustainable digital infrastructure, using existing and new technologies that contribute to energy efficiency. Essential are integration into the energy system and landscape and the use of circular materials. Here’s an update and news about upcoming events.

Smart City Expo Barcelona – RVO
Between 16 and 18 November there will be another Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona. This year the event will be hybrid. The Netherlands is going on a trade mission with a small group of companies and governments to Barcelona. What are the plans?

Workshops:

Energy poverty and the role of data – MRA Bureau & TNO
The MRA Bureau is involved in an EU initiative that tries to get a better grip on the problem of energy poverty. The data shows who is vulnerable for energy poverty and which houses have a bad energy label for instance. Then the question is: How to help? With which intervention? What digitization solutions are there? Smart meters? apps? Think along!

A sustainable and responsible vision of digitization - Amsterdam Economic Board
There are currently data monopolies, the digital economy is not competitive and there is a lot of e-waste and CO2 emissions that come with digitization. Reason to get started with a new initiative: embedding principles about digitization and its influence on the world in an agreement or manifesto. Under what conditions do the parties want to participate? And why wouldn't they do that?

Communication for collective energy saving measures – AMS Institute and Superworld
AMS Institute and the Green Light District are working on a project to encourage residents to collaborate when they invest in energy-saving measures. Think, for example, of joint renovations in the built environment or joint investments. How can you best communicate these options to and with residents?

Want to join? Have a question? Let’s hear it in the comments!

Featured image

Elke week stijgt onze schermtijd.

Wanneer: zaterdag 25 september 11 uur

Waar: outpost planet B, Science Park

Afstand wandeling: ongeveer 2,5 kilometer

Duur wandeling: 1 uur

Expeditie: toekomst

Niels Schrader over Acid Clouds

Using drones in a responsible way (event in Dutch)

Featured image

Kick-off
Woensdag 29 september
09.30-12.00 uur

Exhibition: Bits of You

The Studio presents the Bits of You exhibition. This new exhibition, which is intended for adult audiences, conveys a sense of how our lives are being impacted by the data traces we leave behind each and every day. It also shows how this differs from one person to another.

Step by step, the exhibition’s six pavilions will give you a sense of how our data is processed by algorithms to generate a range of predictions about our identity and behaviour. Immerse yourself in a vortex of data rings, browse through a gender recognition algorithm, develop a feel for the subtle impact of digital profiles, and get a glimpse of a data-driven future. Encounter ten people who each describe a different data experience, then ask yourself ‘Do I really resemble my digital profile?’.

Crowd Monitoring Summer Survey (1 min.)

Featured image

For those of you who know, Marineterrein Amsterdam has been a test area to explore responsible counting of crowds (big and small) in a living lab environment. Summer temperatures are bringing large numbers people to the Marineterrein to cool off - but earlier this winter / spring, the crowd monitor revealed some fun facts about how people made use the inner-city living lab during the Covid19 lockdown.

This summer we’re collecting feedback from the Marineterrein community and the general public. Have you ever been to the Marineterrein? If so, how do you feel about counting people in public space? In this 1 minute survey we ask 5 simple yes/no questions to help us improve your experience on the smart city campus.

Your help is appreciated!
