New geo-design tool can help Amsterdam turn waste into value

TU Delft, AMS Institute, and Metabolic are working with an international consortium of parties to develop an interactive online application that maps resource flows in peri-urban Amsterdam – one of six living laboratories for the REPAiR project, funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program.

The tool equips city planners and urban designers with an interactive map of waste streams and shows how they could be usefully redirected, identifying the significant opportunities in peri-urban areas where the city and the countryside meet.

Research Files #9: Future materials: stories of innovation

Featured image

Trials and errors of breakthrough innovations in advanced materials with MaterialDistrict, Textile Lab & Emma van der Leest.
Material innovation involves much more than just the development of completely new materials. Generally, it revolves around a revaluation of raw materials, techniques, or residual products that are currently overlooked by the industry as unsuitable for the intended purposes. How does material innovation work in practice, how do you ensure you are meeting a need in the market, and how can you scale up?

With:
Els Zijlstra | Creative director MaterialDistrict
Emma van der Leest | Biodesigner, author Form Follows Organism & Creative Director of BlueCity Lab
Ista Boszhard | Co-founder Waag's TextileLab Amsterdam
Cecilia Raspanti | Co-founder Waag's TextileLab Amsterdam

Form Follows Organism
By discovering materials and processes, that nature has designed but hasn’t patented, Emma van der Leest searches for new grown materials that are completely compostable and minimize the usage of hazardous resources that can cause huge damage to our ecosystem. Biodesign incorporates living organisms e.g. bacteria, fungi, algae or cells into the design process. As biodesigner, Emma collaborated with different disciplines, from scientists, physicists, artists, and designers. How could nature’s sustainable materials become tomorrow’s consumer products? Emma is also the founder and creative director of the BlueCity lab, a laboratory where she opens up a wet, dry and tastelab for anyone who wants to research and develop new materials, from bacteria to waste streams.

TextileLab Amsterdam
The TextileLab Amsterdam is an open lab for fashion, textile and material designers; researchers, artists, and engineers; and creatives interested in exploring the future of the textile and clothing industry. With the lab, Ista Boszhard and Cecilia Raspanti want to focus on the unethical and environmental unfriendly realities of the current textile and clothing industry, which has been a topic of conversation for some time now. By 1. experimenting with craftsmanship, heritage, technology, digital fabrication, and biology, 2. sharing knowledge and 3. pushing the boundaries of the textile and clothing industry, they want to explore alternatives for both the changing values in the industries as innovate the design and production process.

MaterialDictrict
MaterialDistrict is the world’s leading matchmaking platform in the field of innovative materials. The platform is used by R&D- and design professionals of all industries to discover new material solutions. From March 12 to 14, the annual expo MaterialDistrict Rotterdam (formerly known as Material Xperience) will be held in Ahoy. Over 180 participants will show you the latest innovations in architecture, interior, urban & landscapes, products, textiles, and print & sign. Get a hold of a free ticket for the expo!

Workshop: Circulair afval verrijkt de stad

Featured image

Data:
5 & 6 januari, 2019

Locatie: Sixhavenstraat, Amsterdam-Noord

Kosten:
- Planten van je kerstboom: 10,-
- Versnipperen van je kerstboom: 1,-

Looking for organic waste disposal solutions

Hi! Next week I will be pitching an idea to separate organic waste in student's dorms. The biggest challenge for this process is to have a big container where the organic waste from one or more buildings can be disposed of in the dense city centre, for instance. Do you know about any solutions or do you have a suggestion of your own? I would love to be hearing about it!

From Ivy League to Living Lab — Harvard University Students Explore Circularity in Amsterdam North

Featured image

Harvard University says its Architecture department is “a unique community, rich in diversity, and collaboration… where students explore today’s most creative design approaches.” This could not have been more true when its Master’s in Architecture students visited De Ceuvel — the epitome of uniqueness, diversity, and collaboration (without the quintessential ivy covered buildings).

On October 13th, Amsterdam Smart City hosted the delegation of Harvard University students who started their day by hearing about the open collective’s ecosystem from Cornelia Dinca, Amsterdam Smart City Delegations Lead and Founder of Sustainable Amsterdam. Cornelia also explained Amsterdam’s structural or strategic vision for being an “Economically Strong & Sustainable” city and how effective collaboration between the “quadruple helix” of residents, government, companies, and knowledge institutions is the key to the combined success of the economy and sustainability.

Students then participated in an expert session led by Sladjana Mijatovic who presented Circular Innovation — Linking Knowledge, Innovation, Business, and People. Sladjana’s experience as Circular Innovation Officer for the City of Amsterdam enabled her to dive deep into the many facets of the City’s multitude of projects and initiatives supporting circularity. The students were most engaged around the discussion of moving from a linear to circular economy as it pertains to the large trend of increased urbanism, and the challenges that come from redeveloping historic areas while keeping sustainability at the forefront of the planning process.

It’s one thing to hear about successful innovative circular development, however, experiencing it is another thing entirely. With this in mind, Cornelia led the group on a cycling tour through Amsterdam North – a fertile ground for creative and circular innovations.
Students wandered through the boardwalk of De Ceuvel which was constructed on the polluted soil of a former shipyard. Through a unique collaboration between architecture firm Space & Matter and sustainability consultancy Metabolic, the former industrial space was transformed into an innovative community of artists and entrepreneurs. Four years on and De Ceuvel continues to lead the way as Amsterdam’s flagship “living lab,” having launched the “Joulitte” blockchain-based energy sharing token, and a biogas boat that converts De Ceuvel’s Café organic waste into biogas and fertilizer.

From De Ceuvel, the group continued on to the Buiksloterham neighborhood to view examples of cutting-edge sustainable and circular architecture. The students were inspired by “Palais Recup” developed by the owner salvaging all sorts of materials first, and then enlisting the services of an architect to design a home from what was available — a true example of innovation, experimentation, and creativity.

The group finished off the tour at NDSM-wharf, inside a shipbuilding hangar from 1919 which has now been transformed to “Kunststad” or “Art City”. Here artists had an opportunity to build a studio of their choice, co-creating what is said to be Europe’s largest breading ground for creatives.

They say an Ivy League education can open many doors. The most important of those being the one that leads you outside to “Challenge the status quo and change things around. From waste and pollution, to up cycling and recovery.”— As stated at the entrance to De Ceuvel.

De Circulaire Stad #45: Van afval tot product

Featured image

Fashion Revolution With Biodegradable Textile

Pollution is the major problem all over the world. There are many industries that contribute to this pollution. But do you know that the clothes that you wear are one of the biggest reasons for the growing pollution? Yes, you heard it right. According to reports, the fashion industry holds the second place for being the most polluting industry in the world. Research says, 20% of global waste is generated from the fashion industry. Along with this, the industry is also responsible for 10% of global carbon dioxide emission which is extremely harmful to the living creatures. However, after realising how much pollution this industry is causing, experts are trying to come up with the sustainable solutions. Scientists all over the world are working extensively to decrease the pollution level generated from the fashion industry.

Small scale Waste Transformer | Organic waste into value on your own site

Featured image

A Waste Transformer is a small-scale anaerobic digester which organisations place on their own site, transforming their own organic waste into green energy (biogas, electricity, heat) and fertilizer. A circular economy around your own waste streams.

A Waste Transformer is the perfect solution for organisations which produce between 600KG and 3600KG of organic waste per day. Normally waste is a cost, with a Waste Transformer it becomes a source of positive (financial) change. It is a high tech installation, but with low tech daily usability. This Waste Transformer in Amsterdam, transforms the organic waste from 10 restaurants, a hotel and micro brewery into green energy. The fertilizer is given back to the park, and the energy created turning the lights on in the restaurants.

A Waste Transformer is suitable in many situations, worldwide. It provides jobs for people with a distance to the labour market, it reduces greatly your waste handling costs, and it creates green energy and fertilizer. Then we have not even discussed the positive stories each Waste Transformer owner can share with their clients and stakeholders.

Upcycling waste, on your own premises.

By the way. A Waste Transformer is a closed systems, which means you don't smell it once it is inside the Transformer. Good energy!
