Als Hogeschool Hoofddocent (in andere hogescholen ook wel aangeduid als ‘associate lector’) heb je een inhoudelijk dragende rol: je zet in afstemming met de lector Energie & Innovatie de onderzoekslijn energietechniek in de gebouwde omgeving uit, draagt bij aan nieuwe onderzoeksprojecten en koppelt die met de kennisbehoefte en vakken in de onderwijspraktijk. Daartoe neem je ook actief deel aan de verwerving van financiële onderzoeksmiddelen. Binnen het en het Centre of Expertise Urban Technology (CoE Urban Tech) draag je met je expertise bij aan het thema Energy Transition. Je weet met studenten op technisch uitdagende ontwerpvragen impact te creëren.

This session is the first in a series of Smart City Dilemmas and podcasts. This time the topic is Energy Citizens.

The transition to a climate-neutral society and the energy transition requires the involvement of all relevant stakeholders: policymakers, energy suppliers, network operators, but also residents. In addition to being energy consumers, residents are increasingly becoming energy traders and even energy producers. We wonder what this means; and what dilemmas arise that we as the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences want to work with?

This first session Is mainly intended for teachers, researchers and others who want to gain more knowledge about the transition to a climate-neutral society.

In a small setting we will look at various approaches to Energy Citizenship, such as peer-to-peer platforms, behavior, justice, cooperation & conflict, skills and technical aspects. These topics will be covered by speakers like Reint Jan Renes (Professor of Psychology for a Sustainable City at AUAS), Beatriz Pineda Revilla (Researcher and Lecturer at AUAS), Pedro Lopes de Carvalho (Senior Researcher & Project Leader Empower 2.0 at AUAS), Jurgen van der Heijden (Senior Consultant Environment & Energy at Osborne), Martijn de Waal (professor Play and Civic Media at AUAS), Fieke van Leest (Planner and Program Manager Urban Insight at Sweco / Gemeente Amsterdam). Mark van Wees (Project manager Urban Technology and ATELIER at AUAS) will be the moderator of the session. Together we will work on dilemmas with a multidisciplinary approach in various projects like ATELIER, Schoon Schip, EMPOWER 2.0, Energy Transition Indische Buurt and Warmtenet Watergraafsmeer and learn from it. Energie Positief wil worden? Welke zaken komen daar bij kijken? Dat wordt
op dit moment in Buiksloterham onderzocht in het Europese project
ATELIER. Denk mee, laat je inspireren en informeren in deze gratis
Innovatie Atelier webinar!”

De Gemeente Amsterdam wil samen met
lokale partners laten zien dat een (deel van de) wijk Buiksloterham
Energie Positief kan worden, oftewel meer energie levert dan gebruikt. In
het Europese project ATELIER wordt in twee Europese steden (Amsterdam en
Bilbao) een Positief Energie District gerealiseerd. In het project werken
30 organisaties samen aan het realiseren van deze doelstelling in de
periode van november 2019 tot december 2024.

Om een wijk  energie te laten leveren, zijn veel vernieuwingen en
innovaties nodig. In het Innovatie Atelier Buiksloterham wordt door de
gemeente, bedrijven, kennisinstellingen en bewoners samengewerkt om deze
vernieuwingen in de praktijk te realiseren. Denk aan duurzame energie
opwek, opslag en uitwisseling. Dit brengt niet alleen technische
uitdagingen met zich mee, maar ook uitdagingen rond financiering en
betaalbaarheid, wetgeving en juridische kaders, en sociale innovatie. De
burger heeft bij het realiseren van een energie-positieve wijk een
belangrijke rol.

In deze webinar wordt de officiële aftrap gegeven van het Innovatie
Atelier Buiksloterham. Dit is de gelegenheid om u te informeren over de
ambities en de werkwijze om een energie-positieve wijk te realiseren in
Buiksloterham!

Te wicked? Niet voor ons.

Wij werken allemaal aan urgente, complexe, maatschappelijke uitdagingen. Issues die schier onoplosbaar lijken, van dilemma’s en paradoxen omgeven, nog niet duidelijk hoe het moet. Wel is duidelijk dát het moet, dat we elkaar nodig
hebben en dat we er NU aan moeten beginnen. Om met de woorden van Jan Rotmans te spreken; we leven niet in een tijdperk van verandering maar in een verandering van tijdperk. En hier hoort een nieuwe gereedschapskist bij.

En of je nou aan energietransitie werkt, andere mobiliteitssystemen, creëren van waterstofhubs, peer to peer autodeelsystemen, het maakt niet uit, we zien dat al deze opgaven op enig moment tegen gelijksoortige barrières aanlopen. Op samenwerking, financiering, privacy, onvoldoende aansluiting op de maatschappij, om maar een paar voorbeelden te noemen.

Unieke samenwerking
Als Amsterdam Smart City netwerk willen en kunnen we deze opgaven niet laten liggen. Door het bundelen van onze kennis en expertise kunnen we als netwerk iets unieks bieden en de wil en durf tonen om deze barrières te doorbreken. De betrokken partners die dit uitdenken en begeleiden zijn RHDHV, Kennisland, Drift, NEMO, Arcadis, Alliander, HvA en Metabolic. Zij bundelen hun expertise en ervaring om de echte vragen boven tafel te krijgen, tot nieuwe manieren van samenwerken te komen en barrières te doorbreken. We richten ons met name op de start van de samenwerking. Gezamenlijk ontwikkelen we een ‘wicked problem aanpak’. Op een nieuwe manier, lerend door te doen, exploratief.

Waar moet je aan denken?
Wat is eigenlijk het echte probleem? Wiens probleem is dit? Hoe kijken anderen er tegenaan? Welke andere partijen lijken nodig? Hoe vind je ze? Hoe ga je om met eigenaarschap en botsende frames? Hoe zorg je dat je al in
een vroeg stadium de maatschappij (bewoners, ondernemers, werknemers, etc) betrekt en hun ervaringen in het project trekt? Het wicked problem team zet nieuwe methoden in voor het beantwoorden van deze vragen. En het creëren van de benodigde commitment om het vraagstuk aan te pakken. Niets staat van te voren vast, want we passen ons aan aan wat we tegenkomen. Met elkaar ontwikkelen we een nieuwe aanpak om de barrières te doorbreken.

Centre of Expertise Urban Technology gaat langjarig en strategisch partnerschap aan met Vattenfall

Centre of Expertise Urban Technology van de Hogeschool van Amsterdam (HvA) gaat een partnerschap aan voor tien jaar met energieleverancier Vattenfall, om toe te werken naar 100% fossielvrij elektriciteitsverbruik van alle HvA gebouwen. Tevens biedt Vattenfall als praktijkpartner urgente vraagstukken aan om een langdurige onderwijs- en onderzoekslijn te bepalen. Daarmee kan HvA serieuze stappen zetten in verduurzaming en de energietransitie. ‘De bevindingen uit onze onderzoeken dienen als voorbeelden voor het toekomstige energiesysteem in Nederland.’

De tienjarige samenwerking start in 2022, maar het eerste thema van de langdurige onderzoekslijn is al bepaald om toe te werken naar fossielvrij elektriciteitsverbruik: ‘uurmatching’. Dit is de zoektocht naar een oplossing voor de mismatch per uur tussen enerzijds het verbruik van duurzame elektriciteit en anderzijds het aanbod van duurzaam opgewekte elektriciteit. Deze mismatch wordt veroorzaakt doordat duurzame bronnen niet altijd voldoende elektriciteit produceren of elektriciteit produceren op momenten dat er geen behoefte is.

HvA wil samen met Vattenfall  in de komende jaren toewerken naar 100% fossielvrij elektriciteitsverbruik (100% uurmatching) in haar gebouwen. Ook de panden van de Universiteit van Amsterdam  (UvA) en Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica  (CWI) dienen als proeftuin van dit onderzoek. Om de oplossingen voor mitsmatch te vinden, ontwikkelt de HvA de komende jaren onderzoeksprojecten ondersteund door nationale en Europese subsidiefondsen.

Op zoek naar de challenge

‘Voor het onderwijs zoeken we samen met Vattenfall naar een overkoepelende ‘challenge’, die we elke paar jaar bijstellen naar behoefte vanuit de beroepspraktijk’, vertelt Felia Boerwinkel, themaregisseur Energietransitie bij Centre of Expertise Urban Technology van de HvA. ‘Vattenfall dient vraagstukken bij ons in, en gezamenlijk met onderwijs en onderzoek gaan we dit invullen met opleidingsminors, stageplaatsen, workshops en gastcolleges. In onze studio’s benutten we specifieke technologieën en vaardigheden voor de kennis- en innovatievraagstukken, en komt onderwijs in aanraking met onderzoek. Zo kunnen we studenten heel gericht klaarstomen voor werk na de studie.’

Vattenfall is een belangrijke speler in het Amsterdamse en Nederlandse energieveld als eigenaar van een deel van het Amsterdamse warmtenet, marktleider in publieke laadpunten en energieleverancier van vele klanten. Renee Heller, lector Energie & Innovatie bij de HvA: ‘Door met Vattenfall samen te werken aan verduurzaming en energie-innovaties kunnen we grote impact hebben. Het is een groot bedrijf waar voor onze studenten ook veel kansen liggen, voor stages en als toekomstige werkgever. Met het krappe aanbod van technici is het voor Vattenfall interessant onze studenten te leren kennen.’

Krachten bundelen

‘Door een lange samenwerking met een praktijkpartner kunnen we continu van elkaar leren, onderzoek constant bijsturen en beter weten wat voor vaardigheden studenten moeten ontwikkelen; nu en voor de toekomst’, vult Boerwinkel aan. ‘Daarnaast biedt een structurele samenwerking de kans om onderzoek thematisch breed aan te vliegen en andere Centres of Expertise en lectoraten van de HvA erbij te betrekken. Binnen het lectoraat Energie & Innovatie hebben we kennis over de techniek, maar in een transitie spelen brede vraagstukken om echt resultaat te boeken, bijvoorbeeld over gedragsverandering, beleid en financierbaarheid.’

Energielevering universiteitsgebouwen

De samenwerking kreeg vorm als onderdeel van een nieuwe energie-aanbesteding van HvA, UvA en CWI, uitgevoerd door Facility Services (FS). Vattenfall kwam uit de bus als energieleverancier en partner op onderwijs en onderzoek tussen 2022 en 2032. Door eerdere samenwerkingen vonden FS en Urban Technology elkaar snel. ‘In ons partnerschap werken we al jaren aan duurzaamheidsambities, zoals duurzame inkoop en het energiezuinig maken van onze panden’, vertelt Rowan Boeters van FS. ‘Nu we met Vattenfall langdurig in het huwelijksbootje zijn gestapt, kunnen we aan lange termijndoelen werken en een serieuze bijdrage leveren aan de energietransitie. We zijn nu bezig met de routekaart hoe we onze elektriciteitsinkoop duurzamer, groener kunnen maken. Wij geloven in het verbinden van onderwijs, onderzoek en de beroepspraktijk, om daarin echt resultaten te boeken.’

Centre of Expertise Urban Technology

Het Centre of Expertise Urban Technology van de HvA draait om de belangrijke opgaven voor de stad, namelijk het toewerken naar circulaire, competitieve en leefbare steden. Vier thema’s staan centraal: Energietransitie, Circulaire stad, Designing Future Cities en Connectiviteit/Mobiliteit. Thema Energietransitie gaat over het leveren van een bijdrage aan de lokale duurzame energietransitie met focus op warmtenetten, vergroting zonne-energie, smart grids (met focus op inpassing van elektrische mobiliteit), energieneutrale- en positieve gebouwen/wijken en de ontwikkeling van laadinfrastructuur voor elektrisch vervoer. Als Centre of Expertise van de Faculteit Techniek fungeert Urban Technology als linking pin tussen onderwijs, onderzoek en beroepspraktijk.

De energietransitie is een van de belangrijkste maatschappelijke thema’s van dit moment en van de komende jaren. Maar wat ís de energietransitie? En wat zijn de specifieke doelen? Wat is het verschil tussen ‘energieneutraal’, ‘klimaatneutraal’ en ‘CO₂-neutraal’? Welke rol kan waterstof (niet) gaan spelen in de gebouwde omgeving van de toekomst? En hoe zitten ons huidige energieverbruik en energiesysteem in elkaar? Deze en andere vragen worden beantwoord in het boek ‘De energietransitie uitgelegd’. Ook komt aan de orde waar de uitdagingen liggen voor de energietransitie en hoe het energiesysteem er in 2050 ongeveer uit zal zien.

Over de Smart Energy Community:
Slimme energiediensten nemen de komende jaren een vlucht, wat vraagt om een intensieve samenwerking tussen betrokken partijen. Wij nodigen hen daarom graag uit om zich aan te sluiten bij de Smart Energy Community voor woningen en bedrijfsgebouwen. Op 17 november vindt de kick-off plaats, in 2021 volgens meer evenementen.

Met deze nieuwe community brengen TKI Urban Energy en Flexiblepower Alliance Network (FAN) de actoren bij elkaar die zich bezighouden met, of meer willen weten van energieflexibiliteit voor woningen en bedrijfsgebouwen. Binnen de community kan actief kennis worden uitgewisseld over wat er nu al mogelijk is, waar de ontbrekende puzzelstukjes liggen, en welke kansen voor innovatie er nog in het verschiet liggen. Natuurlijk biedt de community ook de mogelijkheid om gezamenlijk business te creëren.

AUAS contributes to accelerated roll-out of sustainable low-temperature heating networks in HeatNet project

The international research project HeatNet is all about making heat more sustainable. Less use of natural gas and more use of sustainable heat sources such as the residual heat from data centres. The project aimed to accelerate the roll-out of heating networks in urban areas. And that has been a success! Not only have new heating networks been developed in six European cities, the participating partners have gained knowledge about operating smartly in complex urban transitions. The professors and researcher involved from the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS) talk about the approach and the insights gained.

The role of the AUAS in the research project involves leading evaluations. During six evaluation meetings over three years, the partners reflected on their process of learning from each other and helping each other move forward. Professor of Energy and Innovation, Renée Heller: “As an evaluator, we not only wanted to determine how it went afterwards. But in accordance with the aim of this Interreg project – transnational learning – we embarked on a continuous learning process with each other.”

ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS
This helps the pilot partners gain insights and build on each other’s discoveries. Frank Suurenbroek, professor of Spatial Urban Transformation: “In such complex transition projects, there is so much to consider. This process-based evaluation approach helps you gain insight into the issues you are facing. Such transitions are not a linear process and the insights cannot always be translated directly to other projects. But this approach does make complex processes navigable. It offers pathways for innovation that you can consider.”

The researchers translated this knowledge into various publications and guides, which have been made available to parties dealing with the roll-out of a heating network. Suurenbroek: “The Stakeholder Guide is also interesting for all parties that work on complex urban transitions.” Lecturer-researcher Egbert-Jan van Dijck was responsible for the development of the Stakeholder Guide.

“The heat transition requires an innovation at system level. Therefore, we carried out an extensive stakeholder analysis at meso-level,” explains Van Dijck. “It not only provides an impression of the individuals and organisations involved at the energy sector level, but also of their role in the chain, their interests and concerns. This step towards a situational analysis has enabled us to outline a holistic picture and carry out an in-depth analysis of barriers to the development of the new generation of heating and cooling networks in terms of finance, legislation and regulations and organisation.”

INVOLVING STUDENTS
“We are further expanding this analysis for education.” Van Dijck: Besides the human elements, we also analyse non-human elements, such as buildings, technologies, infrastructure, energy sources and subsurface. These are just as important in determining the situation as the human elements. For example, the pipes for a heating network cannot be laid through a river or a railway track. You need to be aware of these barriers.” Instead of just the people or the stakeholders, students see a much more complete situation at a glance. This goes for fourth-year students as well as second-year students.

Heller: “Several students have used this project for their graduation thesis. Students have even travelled to Ireland on their own initiative to learn more about the energy and heating situation there and to interview partners.”

ROLL-OUT OF HEATING NETWORKS
“There is a lot involved in creating a heating network,” says Heller. “Considering the complexity, it is unusual and significant that all six partners have succeeded in doing so in such a short space of time. It would be a shame not to use the valuable sources of heat available in a country. Data centres, for example, have a huge amount of heat left over. The roll-out of one heating network to multiple heating networks helps us to use available heat sources to increase sustainability and reduce our CO2 emissions.”

INTERDISCIPLINARY AND CROSS-THEMATIC
The HeatNet project is a good example of interdisciplinary collaboration between two research groups with different specialist knowledge. Frank Suurenbroek: “While the implementation of a heating network may appear to be a technical project, it is also an urban transformation process.” Heller adds: “Urban transition involves projects in which taking the energy leap seems the obvious choice, but where there is still little attention for the heat transition, while a great opportunity exists in that respect. Through our collaboration, we have seized that opportunity.”

FLEXCON2020 is converted in 6 digital tracks, for free. From 23 September to 28 October, we will serve a Smart Energy track every wednesday.

The kick off is coming Wednesday 23 September, with Elia, Enervalis, OpenADR and ElaadNL, they will talk about e-Mobility, Smart Charging and V2G.

As a campaign leader, you ensure that the story of Amsterdam Energie is heard in the city, you build our network and inspire even more Amsterdammers to join our cooperative. You devise campaigns and make them a success. You work independently and proactively, ensuring that ideas lead to concrete results.

Activities
- Your main task is to develop and execute campaigns for the growth of Amsterdam Energy in the number of members, our green energy generation, and our network in the city.
- You strategically use both online and offline communication tools. You are responsible for communication via our own website, newsletter and on social media. You maintain contact with (local) press, develop promotional material for the cooperative together with designers and organize events.
- You involve members in the (campaign) activities of Amsterdam Energie. The cooperative has a large network in the city. Our members come from all parts of Amsterdam and have a multitude of backgrounds. That is the strength of the cooperative. You mobilize members and involve them in our campaigns.
- You support the director in project development. Amsterdam Energy has various solar roofs in the city. That should be much more. In collaboration with the director, you recruit new roofs, draw up business cases for interested parties and advise and guide them in the development process.
- You support the board in organizing events such as the general meeting of members.
- You are the contact for members and partners of the cooperative, including the sustainable network 02025 and the municipality of Amsterdam. Good cooperation with our cooperative energy supplier to | new energy is very important in this.

We are helping 8 sustainable solutions entrepreneurs with their internationalisation strategy and to help them achieve a global impact.
The Globaliser is a ten week programme for the international growth of Sustainable Solutions scale-ups.
You will build a solid internationalisation strategy with the use of DutchBasecamp’s tools, network and unique approach. The objective is to create a foundation, so you can channel your precious resources into unfamiliar territories with conviction.

What to expect?
Four sprints containing each a plenary session, specific homework and individual coaching by a seasoned entrepreneur.

After finishing you will have:
A validated international target market
A GTM strategy for that market
A solid international roadmap which will give you practical guidance on the next steps to take

Leveraging on results of past projects, CATALYST has adapted, scaled up, deployed and validated an innovative technological and business framework that enables data centres to offer a range of mutualized energy flexibility services to both electricity and heat grids, while simultaneously increasing their own resiliency to energy supply.

The European Green Deal is the European Commission's strategy for a more sustainable, cleaner and healthier European economy. Research and innovation are of course key to make this happen. RVO (the Dutch agency for subsidies) announces several calls in the coming months of 2020 with a total budget of € 1 billion.

First one on the planning is a special EIC accelerator call for SMEs that need some help to develop a green idea and scale it up internationally. Support will be a subsidy up to € 2,5 million and there is an option for receiving equity up to € 15 million. Projects need to contribute substantially to the European goals for fighting climate change.

Please note that this information is preliminary, more info in Dutch on the website of RVO and we expect that the EU will publish this call in the coming weeks. The RVO-site will update the links to the EC call info, which is not online yet.
