Climate Privilege Walk

De gevolgen van klimaatverandering treffen iedereen op een andere manier. En gezinnen met een hoger inkomen kunnen zich vaak beter beschermen tegen de negatieve effecten van milieuvervuiling.

In de Climate Privilege Walk ontdek je hoe het is om in de schoenen van een ander te staan. Op basis van jouw persoonlijke situatie beantwoord je verschillende vragen over energie en klimaat. Heb jij ooit een rekening niet kunnen betalen door de stijgende energieprijzen? Of moet de verwarming soms hoger zetten omdat het tocht in je huis? Maak jij je zorgen omdat iedereen in 2050 van het gas af moet?Afhankelijk van je antwoord op een vraag zet je een stap naar voren, blijf je staan, of zet je een stap naar achter. Aan het eind van de Climate Privilege Walk wordt door de afstand tussen de deelnemers duidelijk hoe groot de ongelijkheid is.

De Climate Privilege Walk wordt verzorgd door Sarita Bajnath. Zij is trainer, spreker en motivator op het gebied van inclusie, diversiteit en dialoog. Ze werkt zowel nationaal als internationaal voor bedrijven, NGO's, universiteiten en hogescholen.

SNIKHEET

Theatergroep Parels voor de Zwijnen komt naar De Studio van NEMO. Na het ontroerende én feestelijke De Koningin van de Voedselbank en VETARM! spelen ze nu SNIKHEET. Een voorstelling over alweer een ‘hot’ item: we moeten als de sodemieter van het gas af. Maar de energietransitie verdeelt Amsterdamse bewoners. Mensen met een kleine beurs kunnen de energierekening nu al amper betalen. Dus hoe moet dat dan straks? Daartegenover staan vooruitstrevende bewoners die de plannen niet groen genoeg vinden en voor wie het allemaal veel te langzaam gaat.

Al die Amsterdammers komen tijdens een inspraakavond bij elkaar. Dat levert een stevige, maar ook een hilarische clash op tussen bevlogen klimaatactivisten en opgewonden dwarsliggers, vleeseters en veganisten, optimistische aanpakkers en boze gedupeerden, goedbedoelende beleidsmakers en wantrouwende burgers. Het belooft een hete avond te worden, vol pittige standpunten, woeste meningen, slimme gedachten en lukrake ideeën. Maar ook met rauwe levensverhalen die zorgen voor verbroedering.

Over Parels voor de Zwijnen

‘Het gewone leven is te mooi om aan voorbij te gaan’. Dit typeert het uitgangspunt van theatergroep Parels voor de Zwijnen. Vanuit de overtuiging dat het uitvergroten van aspecten uit het dagelijks leven van mensen van een grote theatrale schoonheid is. In de voorstellingen spelen acteurs samen met mensen die in werkelijkheid ook in de verbeelde situatie zitten. De voorstellingen worden bij voorkeur gespeeld op plekken die bij deze mensen horen, en die ook het publiek vaak een nieuwe ervaring bieden.

🔄 How shareable is urban knowledge? Through scientific research, the Closer Cities urban initiative focuses on 'barriers and boosts' of knowledge sharing: what hinders it, what stimulates it, and how can we use these insights in optimizing knowledge sharing?

Closer Cities seeks to answer these questions. We are motivated by the urge to share what's shareable. It is our mission to make knowledge that is currently “invisible”, tied to its origin and unrecognized by the larger urban community, visible and shareable. In the end, we strongly believe that a better exchange and use of urban knowledge and experience can have a significant positive societal impact.

As part of the platform, we showcase the extensive array of existing urban research. We developed the ‘5 questions to’ series in which we ask researchers and scientists to briefly reflect on their research (project) and the shareability of their insights by answering five questions.

Dinsdag 18 oktober vinden er verspreid over Amsterdam 13 Donut-Deal-sessies plaats. Sessies waarin initiatiefnemers en partners, dromers en doeners afspraken maken. Concrete afspraken richting een stad met een veilig ecologisch plafond en een eerlijke sociale basis – een stad in de donut.

s’ Avonds komen alle ‘dealmakers’ in Pakhuis de Zwijger bij elkaar om hun deals aan het publiek te presenteren. Econoom Kate Raworth en sociaal ontwerper Kees Dorst denken mee. Ook Imane Nadif en Lian Heinhuis sluiten aan vanuit de gemeente Amsterdam.

Exhibition Knowing Cotton Otherwise
Cotton is perhaps the world's most well-known fabric, however, many stories behind cotton are less known. These untold and sometimes unexpected perspectives have been collected and brought together in the exhibition, Knowing Cotton Otherwise. Centred on collectivity and community, local artists have been invited to present work that connects and intersects with different themes relating to the story of cotton. By mixing styles and stories, Knowing Cotton Otherwise creates a multifaceted experience, inviting you to reflect, question, play and wonder. 

Fashion, art and social change
Built around different themes telling the story of cotton, the exhibition highlights the relationship between cotton and the fashion industry, the role of cotton in an increasingly intertwined web of global cultures, and the sustainable innovations driving its circular transformation. The exhibition provides questions such as where does cotton come from? How is it grown? What is the future of cotton and the role of innovation? How should we relate to the more questionable aspects of cotton, from its history of forced migration to more modern-day challenges? And how can we celebrate cotton, the connections it creates and the opportunities around it?

Collectivity and Community
Knowing Cotton Otherwise is presented in different phases throughout the year in which the exhibition grows and changes. The first phase features artists Benoît Gilles Michel, Caithlin Courtney Chong, Mario Gonsalves, Niño Divino, Noah Cohen, Nsimba Valene and Tasio Bidegain as well as the collectives OSSO Archive, Studio Papa and The Gang is Beautiful. The exhibition also showcases innovative technologies in material traceability and dyeing from Fashion for Good Innovators Oritain and Officina39. Knowing Cotton Otherwise invites you to question the content presented, examine your ideas and engage together in a process of self-reflection and critical consideration.

The YIMBY (Yes in My Backyard) Festival is an event for people and groups involved – or looking to become involved – in grassroots, locally driven community development in a The Festival is an opportunity for people to gather, spread the word about their work, exchange ideas to effect change and strengthen their networks. It’s a chance to celebrate achievements and identify new challenges and opportunities, in an atmosphere focused on listening, learning and engaging. This one-day event invites community groups from across Arnhem to turn the tables on politicians and policy makers, educating them about the issues that face our city’s communities, as experienced by the community. YIMBY provides an opportunity for neighbours to meet neighbours, residents to meet politicians and politicians to meet community groups in the spirit of people coming together for positive change.

Dear reader,

I am Estefanía Morás, and I am a master student in Industrial Design at the University of Twente, currently working on an exciting research project. This project focuses on supporting transdisciplinary, multi-stakeholder collaboration in smart city initiatives and is supervised by Dr.ir. Deger Ozkaramanli (link). Current issues in smart cities cannot be tackled by a single profession or a discipline, yet bringing together multiple stakeholders from different backgrounds requires tools and methods that are tailored to their needs to ensure fruitful collaboration. I would like to address this challenge by designing a toolkit (physical or digital) that will facilitate managing value conflicts that may emerge among various stakeholders when trying to jointly define a ‘problem’ or find ‘common ground’.

To do this properly, I need input from both researchers and practitioners. This will ensure that the toolkit will be both evidence-based (based on the latest scientific research) as well as relevant for practitioners working in smart city projects such as yourself. Would you be available for a 1-hour interview with me to discuss a specific smart city project that you have been involved in? The emphasis in this interview will be on the opportunities and challenges that emerged in the collaboration (the process) and not so much on specific smart city technologies.

The date of this interview entirely depends on your availability, but if possible, I would like to meet before the end of September.

Improvisatietheater is een mooie manier om emoties, dilemma’s en persoonlijke waarden uit te lichten, goed te beluisteren en misschien nog eens te hernemen. Darko Lagunas is milieusocioloog, en etnografisch onderzoeker. In zijn werk probeert hij juist onderdrukte stemmen die we niet horen een podium te geven. Dat doet hij met geschreven tekst, fotografie en korte films. Hij luistert naar mensen, maar ook naar wat hij noemt, meer-dan-mensen; dieren, planten, zee, en meer. Op dit moment doet hij onderzoek naar de paling als Amsterdammer bij de Ambassade van de Noordzee.

‘Door te luisteren naar meer dan alleen de mens, zien we de grotere structurele problemen waar mensen en meer-dan-mensen slachtoffer van zijn.’

Hi everyone, I am Kyaw and currently studying master's in Urban Environment, Sustainability and Climate Change at Erasmus University Rotterdam. As I am currently doing my master thesis in Buiksloterham, I would like to conduct the interviewees with the residents and future residents of the district.

I would like to ask the questions about why the residents are using renewable energy systems in the existing households in that neighbourhoods and how they can communicate with their neighbour to increase the sense of community.

The excursions are delivered as a partnership between the Urban Cycling Institute (UCI) and Bicycle User Experience (BUX).

This two hour excursion brings you to key innovation sites in the central core of Amsterdam, starting at the Nieuwmarkt square in the city center, and ending at the Rijksmuseum. We curate stops at select sites that are representative of broader trends taking place in the city. We discuss changing directions of how the city views cyclists and the street, we show you best practices and- most importantly 😉 – we promise to challenge your preconceptions of how to plan for a cycling city. At the end, we provide different avenues for continued engagement and learning with us.

The study excursions take place from 16:00-18:00 most Saturdays in July and August*. The cost is €50 per person. There are 15 open spots per excursion. Participants need to arrange their own bicycle to take part.

Heb jij weleens nagedacht over hoe de stad eruit zou zien zonder schoenmakers, houtbewerkers en automonteurs?

Van grote industrieën tot kleine werkplaatsen, makerschap is altijd een belangrijk onderdeel geweest van Amsterdam Noord. Verspreid door het stadsdeel vind je individuele makers en collectieven, ambachtslieden en creatieve ondernemers. Hun toekomst in de stad staat, mede door gentrificatie, onder druk. Betaalbaar onderkomen wordt schaars en makers worden de stad uit gedreven.Tegelijkertijd wordt de stad steeds meer  afhankelijk van deze makers voor uitdagingen zoals de energietransitie en de enorme vraag naar huisvesting.

Het goede nieuws is dat er in Amsterdam, en specifiek Noord, nog steeds veel makers zijn gevestigd. Wie zijn deze makers van Noord, wat maken ze, en hoe draagt dit bij aan de stad, de buurt, en ons leven? 

De tentoonstelling Makers van Noord nodigt bezoekers uit om mee te praten en denken over hedendaags en historisch makerschap in het stadsdeel. Bezoekers kunnen eigen ervaringen in het gebied - van nu en vroeger - achterlaten en hun persoonlijke verhalen delen over vakmanschap en de mensen die hen inspireren.

Metabolic, WWF-France and the Science-Based Targets Network have worked with Bel to understand what areas to target and where the most positive impacts on biodiversity could be made.

If you are a user of voice assistants, you have probably experienced misunderstandings, especially if you are a woman or have an accent.  One of the reasons behind misunderstandings is bias in voice biometrics. This is not a problem if you’re a white US male, but for the rest of us, voice-based systems may be biased.

If you use Google Assistant, whether you use the Assistant App, use Google Home, or Google Nest, you can help mitigate bias in voice biometrics by donating your voice records.

In the process, you will be able to explore your data before committing to donate it.
To do so:

1. Download a copy of your Google Assistant records (See detailed instructions)
2. Upload your data to our Data Donation Platform and explore it
3. Decide what exactly you want to share and donate your data!

We will use the donated data to develop design guidelines and construct an evaluation dataset that reflects real-life usage conditions of voice biometrics technology. In addition, you can participate in a follow-up interview to delve into your personal experience with voice assistants and further explore your data.
