Het is nu officieel! Marineterrein Amsterdam en Amsterdam Smart City worden partners en gaan de samenwerking verder intensiveren. Het doel: kennis delen en samen aan de slag om tot oplossingen voor stedelijke vraagstukken te komen.

Amsterdam Smart City (ASC) zet zich vanaf het Marineterrein al jaren in voor open innovatie door als platform partijen en organisaties aan elkaar te verbinden. Kennis delen en samen aan de slag staan hierbij centraal.

Samenwerking
Een voorbeeld van zo’n samenwerking op het Marineterrein is het Responsible Sensing Lab, waarbij een aantal ASC-partners in de openbare ruimte experimenteren met verantwoorde detectiesystemen om bijvoorbeeld geluidsoverlast of drukte in kaart te brengen. Verschillende partijen brengen bij deze experimenten hun expertise bij elkaar om samen tot oplossingen te komen. De lessen die we daaruit leren zijn waardevol voor heel veel Smart City projecten.

Breder delen
‘Het Marineterrein bestaat uit een levendige community die zich bezighoudt met het oplossen van allerlei stedelijke vraagstukken’, zegt directeur van Bureau Marineterrein Liesbeth Jansen. ‘Er is op het terrein veel kennis aanwezig over nieuwe manieren van leren, wonen en werken, en door ons aan te sluiten bij het ASC-netwerk kan die kennis nu breder gedeeld worden. En andersom kijken we uit naar interessante samenwerkingen tussen het ASC-netwerk en Marineterrein Amsterdam Living Lab die onze community verder kunnen helpen.’

Leren in real life
Directeur van ASC Leonie van den Beuken ziet met de samenwerking veel kansen om nieuwe, innovatieve oplossingen in real life te testen. ‘Een van onze kernwaarden is leren door te doen. Het Marineterrein biedt een prachtig testgebied voor oplossingen die we in de praktijk willen uitproberen. We zijn daarom één van de partners in het Marineterrein Living Lab. Daarnaast staan wij beiden voor open innovatie ten behoeve van een leefbare stad. Aangezien het Marineterrein onze thuisbasis is, is het logisch om onze netwerken en ambities nog meer aan elkaar te verbinden.’

Al jaren is de MRA bezig om innovatieve mobiliteitsvormen te toetsen. Er worden ook steeds meer experimenten met drones gedaan. We vinden het belangrijk om te onderzoeken hoe we deze op een verantwoorde manier gebruiken. Wat zijn spelregels rondom het vliegen, wat is proportioneel gebruik, hoe voldoen we aan Tada en hoe communiceren we naar bewoners?

De gemeente Amsterdam en Amsterdam Smart City organiseren daarom Responsible Drones kennis- en designsessies. We starten hiermee op 29 september. Dit is een verkennend en ontwerpend onderzoek naar de verantwoorde inzet van drones in de stad. Dit project is een samenwerking van het Responsible Sensing Lab en het Amsterdam Drone Lab op het Marineterrein.

We hebben persoonlijke uitnodigingen gestuurd, maar willen ook ruimte bieden aan onze community. Laat me hieronder even weten als je erbij wil zijn en misschien hebben we dan wel een plek voor je!

In September the Sensemakers Community celebrates her 10th anniversary. Due to Covid not with an offline party, but online with speakers that will give an overview of (the learnings from) the changing landscape and a speculative look into the future!

Over the centuries, each urban expansion was followed by a period of catching up to face a new, more complex reality. We still experience it today when we know that more than half a million people sleep on the streets in the United States every night and that rents are rising faster than incomes.

In London, between 1997 and 2016, the number of jobs and the population increased by 40% and 25% respectively, while accommodation capacity only increased by 15%. The average American employee's commuting time has reached new records: an average of 225 hours per year (or more than nine days in total) is spent on the road or in transport.

As in the past, the current reality and the future of a physical place requires a good understanding of the place in question. This is why the meaning of place in a city stems both from its logistical environment and from the social and emotional context that unites its inhabitants.

What smart city technonoly does in percentage

The explosion of integrated sensors, mobile devices, high-speed wireless connections, combined with exponential growth in data and sophisticated analysis tools, offers geospatial perspectives that go beyond the theoretical framework. This led to the birth of “smart cities”. McKinsey estimates that the technologies deployed by smart cities can reduce mortality by 8 to 10%, improve rescue response times by 20 to 35%, decrease travel times by 15 to 20%, decrease by 8 to 15% disease burden and 10-15% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

A new generation of smart cities

Despite some setbacks here and there, on a global or national scale, metropolises, communities and neighborhoods have followed the path of progress, with more concrete results. According to many futurists, we are in the midst of a new generation of smart cities with a more pragmatic sense of city management. Cities that not only apply intelligence to their macro-systems, but seek to optimize micro-sites for global transformations.

A true smart city uses dynamic 3D digital basemaps to obtain real-time information on the condition of neighborhoods, residential areas or buildings down to the lowest level (floor, corridor and housing) or highest (above existing structures such as the roof).

By making all this information accessible to managers; police officers, firefighters and first aid personnel, public transport employees, care providers, grocers and traders, distributors, teachers, social workers, and especially to the inhabitants, each individual will be able to know where the bus is and at what time it will arrive, where a leak has occurred on the water distribution network, in which car parks there are still free spaces,

The coronavirus pandemic has demonstrated the value of a collective city-wide solution, which involves knowing where people in difficulty are and how to help them. For Alison Brooks, a pioneer on innovative ideas:

As we have seen, a smart city must respond to four major challenges:

• Operational Efficiency: Streamline business processes and workflows to improve decision making and locate resources for maximum benefit. The digital dashboard is the ideal tool for this. 
• Data-driven performance: take advantage of data flows from the Internet of Things (IoT), mobile devices, but also sensors that are part of the city's infrastructure, vehicles and buildings, then analyze the whole this data thanks to artificial intelligence. This has made it possible to achieve concrete results such as the adaptive regulation of traffic lights, or real-time (and no longer static) decision-making at the scale of the city and professional services. 
• Citizen involvement: Some smart cities of the first wave encountered cultural and societal obstacles in deploying the technology without asking the opinion of the inhabitants. True smart cities involve communities from the start, identifying the priorities of the inhabitants, responding to the specific concerns and needs of different groups and working for greater social equity. 
• Planning and engineering: 3D modeling, profoundly transformed by the digital revolution and human-centered design, makes it possible to anticipate and mitigate economic, environmental or social upheavals and the resulting tensions. These cards, also known under the name of “digital twins”, take into account a multitude of elements (buildings, infrastructure, vegetation, transit, etc.) down to the smallest level (floor or room, for example). They are the underlying platform of the true smart city.

The history of our species, that is to say of human civilization, in fact merges with the history of the city ; both have the same Latin origin. The city and its systems have allowed a real concentration of resources and the emergence of an entrepreneurial spirit and collective creativity that have won over the entire planet. Thanks to powerful leaders who think outside the box and the cutting-edge tools available to us today and the lessons we have learned from this experience, we have the possibility of reinventing these systems to promote a fairer, more sustainable and more harmonious development model.

The workshop “Cities of Things Amsterdam-Munich” is part of the Creative Embassy AMS-MUC program and kicks off a field lab that focuses on this new paradigm of the smart city: the Cities of Things. It introduces the research theme and invites you to explore possible collaborations in field lab projects.

The Creative Embassy program was initiated by Creative Holland and the Team of Excellence for the Culture and Creative Industries of the City of Munich and started in 2015 as a collaboration between the cities of Amsterdam and Munich. This multi-year partnership created opportunities for creative industries in both regions to exchange and work together on urban challenges.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Science permeate all the capillaries of society. The scientific developments in these fields are rapid. The applications affect all sectors and professions - to a greater or lesser extent - for which the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS) trains.

The AUAS Centre of Expertise Applied AI exists since February 1, 2021 and focuses on the meaningful application of AI techniques in a specific context (healthcare, accountancy, media, retail, etc.). In seven application-oriented labs we work together in co-creation - with education, research, business and civil society organizations - on innovation.

In this way, we train students and retrain professionals to be change-makers for companies and organizations. In this way, we are shaping the digital transition in a real, responsible and inclusive way. And we make the connection between fundamental and practical research, aimed at the daily application of AI in companies and other organizations. In this way, the AUAS contributes to an inclusive digital transition.

2. Workshops
in Nxt Museum – ma. 19 – vr. 23 juli, 1x 3-uur durende workshop
Daarna ontmoeten we elkaar in Nxt Museum (in lijn met de maatregelen rondom Covid) voor een 3 uur durende workshop in Nxt Lab. Hier leer & experimenteer je met de nieuwste technologieën, onder begeleiding van de tech experts in jouw specialisatiegebied. Je legt de eerste bouwstenen van jouw werk.

3. Jouw werk doorontwikkelen
thuis – ma. 26 – vr. 30 juli, 1x een uur samenkomen
Vervolgens werk je thuis verder aan jouw project en krijg je online feedback waarmee je de puntjes op de i kunt zetten.

Are you wondering how to create a digital twin for your factory? How do we bring our industrial assets to digital life from the physical one?

Digital Twins are intended to transform large industrial processes. They are a disruptive technology that assures the (R)evolution of the industry and will be essential for 4.0 factories.

Gartner predicted that this year, half of the largest industrial companies would join digital twins technologies, that is, they will increase their productivity by 10%.

Researchers Sultan Cetin (TU Delft), Catherine De Wolf (ETH Zurich) and Nancy Bocken (Maastricht University), have developed a novel framework combining Circular Economy principles and life cycle stages of buildings, and mapped ten potentially enabling digital technologies.

These include:

1. Additive/robotic manufacturing;
2. Artificial intelligence;
3. Big data and analytics;
4. Blockchain technology;
5. Building information modelling;
6. Digital platforms/marketplaces;
7. Digital twins;
8. The geographical information system;
9. Material passports/databanks;
10. The internet of things.

Their framework can be used to create roadmaps or map your value network in your circular operations.

Sprekers

Arash Aazami is futurist, ondernemer en systeemvernieuwer. Hij studeerde jazz en rockgitaar, werkte als muzikant, en richtte daarna meerdere IT-startups op. In 2006 vond hij zijn roeping in de energiesector. Hij werd directeur van een energieleverancier en ontwikkelde een radicaal nieuwe kijk op onze energievoorziening, the Internet of Energy. In 2015 richtte Arash Kamangir op. Zijn team van wetenschappers, filosofen en creatievelingen ontwerpt de basis voor ons toekomstige energiesysteem en ontwikkelt langetermijnvisies voor toekomstige generaties.

Laetitia Ouillet is voorzitter van De Windvogel. Eerder werkte ze als directeur van de Strategic Area Energy bij de TU Eindhoven en als directeur Corporate Strategie bij energieleverancier Eneco. Op de TU Eindhoven coördineerde Laetitia samenwerking rondom energieonderzoek en gaf ze een stem aan energiewetenschappers in landelijke discussies.

Prof. dr. Gert Jan Kramer is sinds mei 2016 hoogleraar Duurzame Energievoorziening aan het Copernicus Instituut voor Duurzame Ontwikkeling aan de Universiteit Utrecht en hoofd van de Energy & Resources groep binnen dit instituut. Zijn interessegebied is de energietransitie als technisch en socio-technisch fenomeen.

Met o.a. internetpionier Marleen Stikker als keynotespreker. Marleen is de founder van onderzoeksinstituut Waag en aan de Hogeschool van Amsterdam verbonden als Professor of Practice op het gebied van digitalisering.

Hoe maken we zinvolle en bruikbare AI-applicaties?
Hoe ziet verantwoorde AI eruit, die menselijke vermogens en vaardigheden vergroot en de samenleving ten goede komt? Het Responsible AI Lab van het Centre of Expertise Applied AI bestudeert de technologie van AI en gaat de dialoog daarover aan. Het lab maakt Artificiële Intelligentie toegankelijk voor iedereen: inclusief en divers. Specifiek staan de publieke sector en de creatieve industrie centraal. Het lab focust zich voornamelijk op de bredere vraag hoe we zinvolle en bruikbare AI-applicaties kunnen ontwerpen.

Tijdens dit event gaan we in op het belang van Responsible AI, presenteren we een aantal voorbeeldprojecten waar we momenteel aan werken, en maken we je wegwijs in de gebruikte methodieken.
