How to make smart mobility hubs work for everyone? The why of citizen engagement

There are quite some challenges for cities and other stakeholders to make mobility solutions well-tailored for everyone. It starts with finding suitable methods to engage and actively involve different user groups, such as citizens. Subsequently, they have to identify individual user needs with the traveller and co-create transport solutions for the traveller.

With citizen engagement, we try to provide the silent majority with an opportunity to raise their voice. If the SmartHubs project engages the citizen, the city-citizen relation will improve.

Marc Boijens and Laurens van Roozendaal will share some use cases and methods, actively involving the audience.

Decision support systems for locating smart mobility hubs

With the growing use of shared mobility modes comes the need to regulate and organize them into hub access points that offer several modes together. But there's a challenge. How should these hubs be located in a city so that they contribute to mobility sustainability and positively impact its urban fabric?

With that in mind, the SmartHubs project has been developing a decision support tool to help find the best potential areas for installing shared mobility hubs. It comprises a multi-criteria approach that integrates several objectives into the same overall potential score, providing cities with a geographical picture of where they should prioritize their investments.

Gonçalo Homem de Almeida Rodriguez Correia and Miquel Martí Casanovas will explain the method behind the decision support tool, using the city of Amsterdam as an example.

An ecosystem consists of many parties, and it's beneficial for incremental innovation if there, somehow, is a connection between them. But what if your innovation is disruptive and an entire ecosystem has to undergo a transition? How do you find the right partners for your envisioned ecosystem? How can you create a common goal that is equally beneficial for all partners?

SmartHubs are not about technology but about creating an ecosystem with a solid value proposition and the right business models.

Marc Boijens and Laurens van Roozendaal will tell you more about how they tackle the challenges they encounter in the SmartHubs project.

Developing mobility apps to facilitate the transportation and mobility of elders is an example of Gerontechnology. This can promote the active aging of elders in our neighborhoods and help them to do most of their outdoor activities independently. In de Johan Cruijff ArenA vond onlangs de kick-off plaats van Wat Mensen Beweegt, een nieuw onderzoeksproject gericht op duurzame mobiliteit in het Amsterdamse ArenA-gebied.

De Hogeschool van Amsterdam en NEMO Kennislink onderzoeken in samenwerking met eventlocaties ArenA, Ziggo Dome en AFAS Live wat ervoor nodig is om bezoekers te stimuleren duurzamere reiskeuzes te maken.

Vaak gaat het bij dit soort vraagstukken over technische of infrastructurele uitdagingen want die zijn van groot belang. Het gedrag van de individuele reiziger speelt vaak net zo’n belangrijke rol. Daarom richt dit project zich op de belevingswereld van bezoekers. Wat beweegt hen om te kiezen voor de auto, trein of ander vervoer? Hoe kunnen door inzicht te krijgen in de rol van emoties en gedrag betrokken organisaties zoals de ArenA worden geholpen bij het faciliteren van een duurzamer reisgedrag? En hoe kunnen we zorgen dat de bezoeker daar zelf actief aan bijdraagt?

Dit project doet hiervoor een eerste exploratieve verkenning. Resultaten worden in het voorjaar van 2022 getoetst op mogelijkheden om de aanpak die is ontwikkeld verder op te schalen.

 Unieke samenwerking

Dit project is een unieke samenwerking tussen de Hogeschool van Amsterdam (Lectoraat Creative Media for Social Change) die creatieve methoden inbrengt en het wetenschapjournalistieke platform NEMO Kennislink dat werkt via constructieve journalistieke methoden. Naast de eventlocaties wordt nauw samengewerkt met het Platform Smart Mobility Amsterdam, ZO Bereikbaar en het Amsterdam Smart City netwerk.

De gemeente Amsterdam en de Hogeschool van Amsterdam starten in november 2021 een onderzoek naar het reisgedrag van Amsterdammers. Een bereikbare en leefbare stad begint bij de behoeften van de inwoners. Hoe vaak, wanneer en met welke voertuigen verplaatsten ze zich door de stad? Dat zijn vragen waar we met de proef antwoord op willen krijgen.

Over het onderzoek
De proef wordt uitgevoerd met behulp van de slimme app Fynch. Fynch biedt niet alleen een helder overzicht van iedere gemaakte rit, ook de CO2-uitstoot, afgelegde kilometers, vermeden spitsuren en aantal minuten beweging per dag worden bijgehouden. De Hogeschool van Amsterdam onderzoekt het reisgedrag van Amsterdammers via de ritten in de app en stuurt tijdens het onderzoek twee vragenlijsten om nog meer te weten te komen over de reisbehoeften van de deelnemers.

Samen met Provincie Noord-Holland, Provincie Flevoland, Gemeente Amsterdam en Vervoerregio Amsterdam zoeken we naar werkbare en innovatieve oplossingen om bezoekersstromen te beïnvloeden en drukte op hotspots te voorkomen. Overheden binnen de Metropoolregio Amsterdam kunnen de oplossingen straks zelf inkopen, dus de hele regio profiteert hiervan.

De twee consortia die het onderzoek doen, testen hun oplossingen op twee drukke plekken in de regio. De eerste proef in Zandvoort is afgerond en de resultaten worden vrijdag gepresenteerd tijdens het EV Experience - Circuit Zandvoort. Later dit jaar is de Kalverstraat in Amsterdam aan de beurt.

Waar is de zomer gebleven dit jaar?
Dit hebben we ons vaak afgevraagd in de laatste maanden tijdens de testen in Zandvoort…niet alleen wij maar waarschijnlijk iedereen in Nederland.

Na alle voorbereidingen stonden we klaar om te testen maar de echt drukke dagen bleven helaas uit. Natuurlijk was er de F1 waar duizenden mensen naartoe kwamen, maar toen hebben we niet getest omdat we juist “incidentele drukte” willen takkelen zonder tickets. Waar we dus niet weten van te voren hoeveel mensen er komen.

Maar we hebben geluk gehad en in september alsnog de kans gekregen om tijdens de mooie dagen de oplossingen te testen!

Voor de bezoekers van Zandvoort betekende dit: dat we niet alleen de drukte hebben voorspeld op basis van verschillende soorten data bronnen. Maar vervolgens hen ook geïnformeerd hebben over de drukte en wat hun handelingsperspectief is.

Voor de gemeente Zandvoort betekende dit: dat het verkeersmanagement team ingelicht werd wanneer en waar het precies druk zou kunnen worden. En hebben we de gemeente ook direct de oplossing geboden hoe de drukte mogelijk voorkomen kon worden.

Het is al weer een tijdje geleden dat we iets hebben gepost over Project Scale Up.
Scale Up is het programma dat uitzoekt hoe je bezoekersstromen kunt beïnvloeden om drukte op hotspots te voorkomen. De Provincies Noord-Holland en Flevoland, Gemeente Amsterdam en Vervoerregio Amsterdam hebben hierover vragen aan de markt gesteld. Met een innovatieve manier van aanbesteden jagen we de ontwikkeling van oplossingen voor gedragsbeïnvloeding aan.

Het was even stil omdat we druk bezig zijn geweest met alle voorbereidingen zodat onze twee consortia goed van start konden. Er is veel gebeurd in de tussentijd, we geven je graag een update!

We zijn met deze twee consortia in zee gegaan (letterlijk!):
·       LYNXX B.V., REISinformatiegroep B.V. (9292) en HERE Europe B.V.;
·       Sweco B.V., Scenwise, Livecrowd, PTV Nederland, TomTom en ViNotion.

✓ We hebben een samenwerking gestart met gemeente Zandvoort waar het niet alleen tijdens de F1 druk wordt maar natuurlijk ook tijdens de zomer. Deze geliefde strandlocatie is perfect om de 2 oplossingen van de consortia te testen.

✓ We hebben allerlei data verzameld. De grote vraag voor ons was ‘Hoe kun je drukte voorspellen en welke databronnen kun je daarvoor het beste gebruiken?’. Dat was soms nog een zoektocht omdat dit soort data niet zo maar klaar op de plank liggen.

✓ We hebben meerdere kennissessies gehad een daarbij veel kennis met elkaar gedeeld. Bijvoorbeeld: Johan Cruijff Arena heeft met ons resultaten en lessons learned van eerdere projecten rondom drukte en gedragsbeïnvloeding gedeeld. Daarnaast hebben we meer over de drukke recreatiegebieden in Provincie Noord Holland geleerd en de draagkracht daarvan.

De mobiliteit in de Metropoolregio Amsterdam is in beweging letterlijk en figuurlijk. We verwachten een grote groei van bewoners en bezoekers. Dat heeft zijn weerslag op de openbare ruimte. Om de stad leefbaar en duurzaam te houden moeten we ervoor zorgen dat we op een andere manier door de stad gaan bewegen. Daarom experimenteert de gemeente Amsterdam met BuurtHubs. Dat zijn plekken in de buurt waar Amsterdammers gebruik kunnen maken van elektrische deelmobiliteit.

Tijdens de Smart Thursday op 9 september van 16.00 tot 17.00 uur deelt Gemeente Amsterdam de eerste ervaringen met BuurtHubs. Naast het delen van de geleerde lessen over praktische zaken (zoals het inpassen van een hub in de openbare ruimte) gaan we ook in op de buurtgerichte aanpak. Tenslotte delen we interessante inzichten uit het eHUBS project het Europese project waar de BuurtHubs onder vallen. Meer weten? Lees dan alvast dit artikel.

Dutch-Korean Smart city cooperation

Various missions, a Government-to-Government Memorandum of Understanding (G2G-MoU) and smart city awards have brought Dutch and Korean activities in the field of smart city closer together since 2018. Smart cities are an important growth market. Partly for this reason, the Netherlands is very well represented with its own pavilion at the World Smart City Expo 2021 in Seoul.

Participation is interesting if your company is active in the field of energy-neutral construction ('zero energy building'), smart mobility ('smart mobility') or urban agriculture ('urban agriculture'). It doesn't matter if you are a start-up, want to seize international opportunities for the first time, or are already active internationally.

Amsterdam is investing heavily in shared transport. Shared cars, scooters and  bicycles make the city more accessible. That last option is healthy, clean and popular. For those who don’t have a bike, or looking for a second bike, we have a shared bike. The city of Amsterdam will receive 1,400 shared bicycles, including 100 shared electric cargo bikes. Some are allready on the streets; the rest will follow from August 15.

Where can you find shared bikes?
At the Zuidas, along the ‘Westlijn’ of the metro, in Oost and Zuidoost. Electric shared cargo bikes can be found in Oost and Zuid. There is a maximum number of shared bicycles per area. It is a 2 year experiment. Then we'll see if we continue.

• FlickBike: 400 shared bicycles along metro stations on the ‘Westlijn’ (from Henk Sneevlietweg to Isolatorweg) and the bus to Westpoort, from 15 June
• Cargoroo: 100 electric shared cargo bicycles in Oost and Rivierenbuurt (Zuid), from 15 June
• Donkey Republic: 300 shared bicycles in Oost, from 15 August
• Soon to be announced: 400 shared bicycles Zuidoost and 200 shared bicycles Zuidas from 15 August

Where do I park the shared bike?
A shared bicycle is a good means of transport for commuters and visitors. The bicycles are usually located near a public transport junction. They have their own parking spaces and must be returned to 1 of the parking spaces of that provider. Only in those places can you stop the rent. The shared cargo bikes have their own parking space, clearly marked on the ground. You can of course park the bike somewhere else in between, but then you will continue to pay. That way the bikes won't roam, is the idea.

Greener cities

More than 70 percent of people in European cities breathe dangerous air, according to the European Environment Agency and 1 million deaths occur annually due to physical inactivity in Europe, states the World Health Organisation. The key to a healthier, more productive, greener and less polluted city could be a new planning and design strategy based on the idea of shared speed in urban space.

The pandemic has given us new perspectives and revealed the flaws in street space distribution and public space as it disrupted people’s travel behavior, compelling us to work from home, move shorter distances, and explore the city on a more local scale.

At the same time, about 70 percent of the global population – an astonishing 7 billion people – are expected to live in cities by 2050. With air pollution causing damage to human health and ecosystems, large parts of the population will not live in a healthy environment.

Eugene Grüter
Grüter will share the  outcome of the new Urban Insight report where Sweco envisions proximity, density, and shared speed as paths for transforming streets into incubators for health and well-being. “A core strategy of streets as health incubators entails treating the city’s various modes of transportation, from driving to walking, as more equal, a planning and design strategy that we call shared speed,” says David Lindelöw, transport planner at SWECO in Gothenburg, Sweden, and one of the report’s authors.

Bas Dubois
Dubois (Managing Director Benelux at Volvo Bus): "Just imagine a city with zero emission vehicles only; clean and silent. Since almost two decades Volvo buses is developing electromobility products and services for cities and in this presentation and Bas Dubois will take you on the journey Volvo buses has made and share the insights and experiences gained.”
