A smart city is made out of connected objects. Sometimes we buy already-made "smart" objects, but it's also possible (...and really quite easy indeed) to make them ourselves.

In this hands-on workshop we’ll quickly cover the basics of microcontrollers and then we’ll work together to create your very own interactive object. It’ll even be able to connect to the Internet!

Specifically, we’ll be focusing on making a motion-activated light component. With your learnings you’ll easily be able to take the next steps to using other real-world inputs to invoke other real-world outputs.

With your ticket (€50-) you’ll get your own electronic components set (to take home with you after the workshop) and together we’ll hook them up to your computer and program them. This includes an ESP32 microcontroller, a PIR motion sensor, LED lights and all required jumper and USB cables.

Absolute beginners are more than welcome! This workshop will involve some basic programming, and if you don’t have any experience or this sounds intimidating, rest assured that you won’t need to write any code yourself and you can simple copy paste your way to interactivity.

Duits-Nederlandse samenwerking
Steeds meer infrastructuur en mobiliteit worden gedigitaliseerd. Steden richten zich in toenemende mate op een positieve leefomgeving, waarin innovatieve en slimme oplossingen een grote rol spelen. De Bundesverband Smart City roept Duitse en Nederlandse bedrijven op hun krachten te bundelen en de ontwikkeling van een Europese Smart City Standard te ondersteunen.

Nederland staat bekend om vooruitstrevende projecten op het gebied van slimme steden en intelligente mobiliteit, maar ook Duitsland heeft veel te bieden. Mede dankzij het Smart City made in Germany programma zijn zes Duitse steden opgenomen in de Smart City Index van 2023; Nederland werd vertegenwoordigd door drie steden. Vooral op het gebied van sensortechnologie scoort Duitsland hoog dankzij de strenge regelgeving voor gegevensbescherming. Hierdoor zijn de innovatieve technologieën ook in het buitenland met slechts minimale aanpassingen inzetbaar.

About the conference
The AMS Scientific Conference (AMS Conference) explores and discusses how cities can transform themselves to become more livable, resilient and sustainable while offering economic stability. Cities are innovation hubs, where an increasing number of people live, work, recreate, interact, and care. The urban fabric is where major transitions take place, catalyzing advancements in mobility, circularity, renewable energy, climate adaptation, urban food systems and digitization. Precisely for these reasons, our cities set the agenda for improving the livability and sustainability of our world.

Cultivating transformation
To foster improved urban environments, we need scientific and societal insights into our complex urban systems, into how natural and social processes are interconnected and reach tipping points, into the good, the bad and the ugly of our cities. We need amazing discoveries, technical and social innovations to transform the ugly, leave the bad behind and reach for the good. And most of all, we need to make the city together, because WE are the city.

Theme of this year

In this second edition of “Reinventing the City”, the overarching theme will be ‘Blueprints for messy cities? Navigating the interplay of order and complexity'. In three captivating days, we will explore ‘The good, the bad, and the ugly’ (day 1), ‘Amazing discoveries’ (day 2) and ‘We are the city’ (day 3).

Day 1: 'The good, the bad, and the ugly'
The first day of the AMS Conference primarily focuses on the messiness: the various aspects of urban development and innovation. "The good" refers to success stories and positive developments in cities. "The bad" relates to challenges and issues that cities face, and "the ugly" pertains to less attractive aspects of urban development. This theme explores how cities, both in terms of space and users, evolve in both positive and negative ways.
Day 2: 'Amazing discoveries'
The second day of the conference concentrates on pioneering research and innovations, both technical and social, in the field of urban renewal and sustainability. Here, we ask participants to present and discuss new and exciting discoveries that have a positive impact on urban areas. We focus on areas such as mobility, food, circularity, energy, climate resilience, and smart data.
Day 3: 'WE are the city'
This theme emphasizes that the people living and working in cities play an essential role in urban renewal and development. This can involve community engagement, citizen participation, public-private partnerships, and the importance of involving all stakeholders in the city. Only together can we create livable and inclusive cities.

Van scanauto’s tot  beveiligingscamera’s, in stadsontwikkeling wordt computer vision technologie op allerlei manieren ingezet in de openbare ruimte. Het inzetten van zulke technologie leidt tot allerlei uitdagingen op gebied van het inbouwen van publieke waarden. Neem bijvoorbeeld de scanauto, deze wordt vooral ingezet om parkeerovertredingen te detecteren. Technisch gezien is het ook mogelijk om andere dingen te 'scannen', zoals zwerfafval, kadebelasting of groepsvorming. Maar willen we dat wel? 

Wanneer de gemeente besluit om computer vision technologie in te zetten, gaat dat vaak via een aanbestedingsproces. De gemeente publiceert een opdracht waar organisaties en bedrijven zich kunnen inschrijven. Waag heeft het aanbestedingsproces in kaart gebracht en onderzoekt op welke momenten burgers betrokken kunnen worden. Tijdens deze workshop delen we de eerste inzichten en gaan we samen met de deelnemers op zoek naar best practices, tips en tools voor het vergroten van de maatschappelijke waarde van aanbestedingen. In this workshop we will look at unwanted consequences, based on two existing urban technologies: a parking scan car service and an online reporting platform for local issues. CULTUURVERANDERING IN DE BOUW

Binnen de bouw zal men in de toekomst anders moeten gaan werken vanwege de maatschappelijke opgaven als duurzaamheid, klimaat en het arbeidstekort. De bouw zal (meer) moeten leren werken met alle digitale mogelijkheden die er zijn en aankomen. Dat vereist een andere cultuur van samenwerken. Zowel binnen het bedrijf als in de keten.

Ook het tekort aan personeel zorgt ervoor dat anders zal moeten worden omgegaan met personeel. Bedrijven zullen inclusiever moeten worden, zullen ook te maken krijgen met zij-instromers en ook hier zal digitalisering ervoor zorgen dat meer gedaan kan worden met minder mensen. Dr. ir. Koos Johannes, onderzoeker cultuur & ketensamenwerking bij de HVA zal tijdens het diner zijn inzichten delen over de Cultuurverandering in de bouw. Over deze, en nog veel meer onderwerpen, gaat het komende Innovation Dinner met als thema: Cultuurverandering in de bouw.

This is the 10th episode of a series 25 building blocks to create better streets, neighbourhoods, and cities. In this post, I mainly focus on health problems which are directly related to the quality of the living environment  

Are cities healthy places?

According to the WHO's Global Burden of Diseases Study, 4.2 million deaths worldwide each year are caused by particulate matter. The regional differences are significant. Urban health depends on the part of the world and the part of the city where you are living. More than 26 million people in the United States have asthma and breathing problems as a result. African-American residents in the US die of asthma three times as often as whites. They live in segregated communities with poor housing, close to heavy industry, transportation centers and other sources of air pollution.
Globally, the increasing prosperity of city dwellers is causing more and more lifestyle-related health problems. Heart disease, and violence (often drug-related) has overtaken infectious diseases as the first cause of death in wealthy parts of the world.  

The Netherlands

Very recently, Arcadis published a report on 'the healthy city'. This report compares 20 Dutch cities based on many criteria, divided over five domains. The four major cities score negatively on many aspects. In particular: healthy outdoor space, greenery, air quality, noise nuisance, heat stress and safety. Medium-sized cities such as Groningen, Emmen, Almere, Amersfoort, Nijmegen, and Apeldoorn, on the other hand, are among the healthiest cities.
In Amsterdam, the level of particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in 2018 exceeded World Health Organization standards in many streets. The GGD of Amsterdam estimates that 4.5% of the loss of healthy years is the result of exposure to dirty air.  

Collaborative measuring air quality

In various cities, groups of concerned citizens have started measuring the quality of the air themselves. A professional example is the AiREAS project in Eindhoven. An innovative measuring system has been developed together with knowledge institutions and the government. Sensors are distributed over the area of the city and the system provides real-time information. The AiREAS group regularly discusses the results with other citizens and with the city government. The measurement of the quality of the air is supplemented by medical examination. This research has confirmed that citizens in the vicinity of the main roads and the airport have an increased risk of mortality, reduced lung function and asthma.
The AiREAS project is linked to similar initiatives in other European cities. Occasionally the data is exchanged. That resulted in, among other things, this shocking video.  

Future?

Could the future not be that we are busy doing the obvious things for our health, such as walking, cycling, eating good food and having fun and that thanks to wearables, symptoms of diseases are watched early and permanently in the background, without us being aware of it? The local health center will monitor and analyze the data of all patients using artificial intelligence and advise to consult the doctor if necessary. An easily accessible health center in one's own neighborhood remains indispensable.

Are you a concerned smart citizen, or smart city innovator? This workshop is for you! Tom van Arman, from TAPP - Smart City Architecture will guide you through the many legal, technical and even spatial considerations that you'll need to know about before deploying sensors in public space. Participants will go on a real-world Sensor Safari to discover the many devices in their natural habitat. Finally, roll up your sleeves and work together in a ‘Sensing Dilemma Workshop’ where we will field test some sensing projects to see how it can help (or harm) our future city! The workshop will take place on the Marineterrein, an inner-city test ground for a sustainable living environment.
Ethics in smart city technology is not something you assess at one specific point in time in a tech's lifecycle and then can forget about it. In the project Human Values for Smarter Cities, researchers, designers, civil servants (The Hague, Rotterdam and Amsterdam), and citizens look for ways ethical principles can be interwoven in the articulation, making, deployment and adjustment of smart city technology.

Heb je altijd al eens willen ervaren hoe een sensor werkt? Of hoe je een actie omzet in een reactie? Kom dan naar Waag Open en leer hoe je met verschillende textiel-technieken zachte, aaibare sensoren kan maken. 
E-textiles bieden de mogelijkheid om aanrakingen, knijpbewegingen of spanning om te zetten in data. Door met stroomgeleidende garens elektronische componenten te maken (bijvoorbeeld door te borduren of te breien), kun je vervolgens fantastische dingen aansturen zoals geluid, licht en beweging. Tijdens deze Waag Open editie focussen we op geluid: aan het eind van de avond gaan we de zelfgemaakte sensoren gelijk testen, en sluiten we af met een muzikale jamsessie…
Ontwerper & maker Michelle Vossen en soldeer- & hardware-expert en tevens oprichter van Acid Solder Club Veerle Pennock bieden je een toegankelijke instap in de wereld van elektronica. Ze hebben zichzelf de uitdaging gesteld om elektronica tastbaar en zichtbaar maken: textiel leent zich hier uitstekend voor! 
In deze workshop leer je verschillende textieltechnieken die je daarna zelfstandig kunt toepassen om je eigen zachte sensoren te maken.

Waag Open

Elke eerste donderdagavond van de maand opent Waag haar deuren! Kom langs om te discussiëren en te doen. Want we gaan niet alleen in discussie over maatschappelijke thema's en de toekomst - je leert daarnaast ook altijd iets praktisch.
Iets dat je altijd al hebt willen uitproberen, zoals de 3D-printer in het FabLab, of juist iets dat je nooit had verwacht, zoals uitpluizen hoe DNA in elkaar zit in ons biotech-lab. Waag Open vindt plaats in (een van) de maakplaatsen op de eerste en tweede verdieping van het historische Waaggebouw op de Nieuwmarkt.

Toegankelijkheid

Omdat het Waag-gebouw een beschermd monumentaal pand is, is het helaas niet voorzien van een lift. Dit evenement vindt plaats in de Makersguild op de eerste verdieping van het Waag-gebouw.

Day and night, 114 sensors are collecting data about the use and occupation of the facilities at H20 Esports Campus in Purmerend. Such data can be of great interest to plan work more efficiently and cost effectively. Partners of AMdEX, an Amsterdam Economic Board initiative make sure data is exchanged between trusted parties only. And that any conditions for access and use are enforced.

How many people go in and out a building throughout the day? Do they prefer specific elevators? Which toilet areas are most used? Are bins and soap dispensers full? Facility managers and cleaning companies love that type of information. Unoccupied areas do not need to be serviced as frequently as busy ones. The Esports Campus, an event location for businesses and private parties, was keen to share the sensor data in a safe and trustworthy manner. The entrepreneur reached out to the team of our AMdEX initiative, via the Data Sharing Coalition.

Ready for it

For AMdEX, the request from Esports Campus came at exactly the right time. Previously, the field lab at the Marineterrein in Amsterdam proved how environmental and liveability data can be accessed and shared in a trusted environment – after the data owner and data user had agreed on simple terms. “We were ready for a more complicated case,” says Hayo Schreijer (Dexes), one of the founding partners of AMdEX. “The case at Esports Campus is a mix of private and public data, collected in a private space and to be shared over the Internet. Also, a lot more parties would be involved than in the previous Marineterrein case.”

Endorsing partner KPN

KPN is AMdEX’ endorsing partner for connectivity and network infrastructure. KPN’s infrastructure could enable this innovative entrepreneur to collect and share this data reliably with his business partners. Carolien Nijhuis is EVP Internet of Things and Dataservices at KPN. She says: “This smart building project is next level complexity. It combines all the issues we think are important. Safe and trusted exchange of data is necessary to solve the bigger issues in our society. In this project, KPN provides interoperability and connectivity according to European standards of privacy and security.” It is tempting to think that data exchange is all about technology. It is not. “Besides being innovative, using professional technology, data exchange is very much about legal and organisational issues”, says Schreijer.

New terms and conditions

The Esports Campus pilot ran in parallel with a next phase of the field lab at the Marineterrein. Tom van Arman (Tapp), says: “At Marineterrein we measure environmental factors and occupancy of the public space: water quality, temperature, numbers of people. Esports is a private space that collects more personal and commercially sensitive data. We had to consider new terms and conditions in the agreements with all parties involved. Prototype for all-in-one app

This summer, a milestone was reached: a prototype of Facility Apps, the all-in-one app solution for cleaning and facility management. Data from the Esports Campus is made available to the cleaning partners through this app, allowing them to plan the work more efficiently. The data in the app is contained in a ‘Solid Pod’, a decentralised data store. When data is stored in someone’s Pod, they control which people and applications can access it. The AMdEX layer verifies the identity of parties that want to access the data and authorises them to do so – if they are certified parties. Schreijer clarifies that AMdEX does not ‘see’ the data. It tells systems whether access or usage of data is allowed and makes these decisions auditable. Nijhuis also emphasises that KPN enables the technical data exchange and has no access to the actual data. The next step is to evaluate the app with the users.

Great potential for smart cities

This pilot has shown that private data can be shared reliably between private partners. Combined with the results from the public space of Marineterrein, all three partners see great potential for smart city applications. City planning based on actual data, more efficient energy management of buildings or even industrial areas, innovation in sustainable logistics. “Especially when we all work together,” concludes Nijhuis. “If you run alone, you go faster, but together you go farther.”

Wat is de bezetting van een gebouw gedurende de dag? Hebben mensen voorkeuren voor bepaalde liften? Hoe vol zijn afvalbakken en zeepdispenser?

Door de explosieve toename van sensoren weten we steeds meer over het gebruik van gebouwen en openbare ruimtes. Maar in de meeste gevallen mag niet alle data zonder meer worden gebruikt en zijn sensoren van verschillende eigenaren met specifieke eisen. Dit maakt het delen van data tijdrovend en kostbaar.

De H20 Esports Campus heeft, samen met AMdEX, KPN, iShare en Facility Apps deze catch-22 doorbroken voor het delen van gevoelige data. Zij laten zien dat het mogelijk is om zulke gegevens te delen tussen meerdere partijen en toch grip houden op hun eigen data.

Pientere Tuinen is een 3-jarig project dat begin april 2023 is gestart. Tot eind 2023 kunnen nieuwe deelnemers aansluiten bij het grootste participatieproject in Nederland. Pientere Tuinen is een samenwerking van 7 publieke en private partijen.

De aanpak in Pientere Tuinen draait om drie samenhangende onderdelen.
 
1. Data verzamelen met een slimme sensor en een interactief/educatief dashboard van de eigen tuin voor de individuele inwoner,
2. Kwantitatief (data-analyse) en kwalitatief (interviews/surveys) onderzoek naar strategieën voor een gezonde leefomgeving en duurzame gedragsverandering,
3. Advies op maat aan bewoners over de inrichting en het beheer van de tuin

Het doel van Pientere Tuinen is een groenere, gezondere leefomgeving te creëren door het bewustzijn en de motivatie bij tuinbezitters te vergroten. Dat doen we door data te verzamelen, onderzoek uit te voeren en meer maatwerk te bieden in de advisering en voorlichting aan bewoners.
 
Enkele voordelen van uw deelname aan Pientere Tuinen op een rijtje
- Tuinbezitters krijgen een bodemsensor die drie jaar lang hitte, bodemkwaliteit en het vochtgehalte meet, waarvan resultaten zichtbaar zijn op een dashboard
- Tuinbezitters krijgen (mede op basis van de data) specifieke voorlichting voor het vergroenen van de tuin door middel van tuintips, stappenplan en mogelijke (wijk)workshops
- Deelnemende organisaties zijn onderdeel van het grootste participatieproject van Nederland met ca. 5.000 deelnemers en meetpunten door heel Nederland
- Deelnemende organisaties worden betrokken bij twee langdurige, landelijke onderzoeksprogramma’s naar motivatie voor vergroening en gedragseffecten van verschillende interventiestrategieën, en data-analyses van milieu- en gezondheidsaspecten
- Als organisatie bent je zelf als partner zichtbaar in een landelijke PR- en communicatiecampagne rondom het project.
- Je leert zelf binnen de community over structurele, duurzame vergroening met uw inwoners onder andere van de onderzoeksprogramma’s en andere projectpartners

This evening we will have some Xmas-ideas and materials for you to work on, as to not only (learn to) use the machines & sensors, but also take home a souvenir (it would help if you already have Inkscape installed if you want to make the xmas tree decorations with your name in it:-)

Of course you can also work on your own projects with likeminded and discuss your challenges, or learn to work with Raspberry Pi or work on a prototype to 3Dprint etc. Manuals are available (but also on Youtube) and we have a lot of fun little projects to work on!

De stad hangt vol met sensoren zoals camera’s, geluidsmeters en verkeertellers. De gemeente Amsterdam gebruikt deze sensoren om de stad veilig, schoon en leefbaar te houden. Daarbij is de privacy van haar inwoners heel belangrijk. Daarom werkt de gemeente aan duidelijke richtlijnen over de inzet van sensoren. Om dat goed te doen, vragen we de mening van bewoners over dit onderwerp.
 
We nodigen u van harte uit mee te denken. Daarvoor organiseren we bijeenkomsten. Daar kunt u in gesprek met de gemeente en met mede-Amsterdammers over sensoren op straat. We vragen u om ideeën, om ons te laten weten wat u belangrijk vindt. En welke rol u van de gemeente verwacht. Uw ideeën gebruiken we om ons beleid beter te maken. En om te checken of we aandacht geven aan de juiste zaken. We zorgen voor een goede open sfeer. En we verzorgen hapjes en drankjes.
