Some platforms know exactly what series you would like to watch today based on your previous preferences and when to display you an advertisement for a baby chair before you even know that you need one. Imagine that a city knows for you and in real-time who is worth meeting so that you can develop as an expert, and which team needs your key competencies so that you can be hired immediately.

As we are more conscious of ourselves and our goals, the world is responding to our actions with more synchronicity. It is one basic and very old knowledge based on the concept of the subconscious and selective perception. What’s more, psychology elaborates that the main factor of satisfaction with a certain situation is the set of relationships with the environment and people that suit us best.

For one good relation set will be a quiet desk and a world of numbers and tables, for the other it will be an energetic communication with others towards an ambitious aim of changing the world. In separated ontologies, those types can be described and classified differently. We are diverse in so many many ways that there is no perfect system that would describe precisely what makes us unique. Nevertheless, some systems are pretty well adjusted, enough to make them a part of our language or part of smart city competencies’ platform, and even to use them to help navigate citizens through activities and events.

In my dream, cities of the future help us adapt the outside world to our deep needs. The main component of a smart city is not a network of external sensors, but a deep radar of our internal needs which looks deep into our psyche and soul. Doesn’t that fit the slogan of the technocratic city?

In our living lab in Wroclaw, we worked with young people on solutions to help them with the new labor market. We tested there the latest achievements of psychology and a new approach to motivation and interpersonal development of young students.

We used our imagination to create a city-wide game that was about defeating the mythical anti-creator by working together to develop creative skills. During the one year process we tried to answer many questions: How to apply the national qualifications framework in an accessible form? Who will be good programmers? Who will never become one? How to change thinking about the city and its role? How to recognize talents at an early stage? How can we build qualities such as leadership, commitment, and entrepreneurship?

Cities need to take immediate action towards mapping and supporting digital and future-proof competencies and approaches.

On the one hand, we helped students get to know each other better, and on the other, internalized with a multilevel transformation of the external world. We used to work on paintings, create our own icons, debate with experts. We also required communication of our own interpersonal discoveries. We created personal websites, business cards, and team presentations. It helps us (and the platform) to understand each one's unique feature and potential roles.

The final stage was to create a small project as a team for one of the local companies or an NGO. Communication with a peer group was just as important as the flow of information with the career adviser and mentors platform. We set up the framework of internal game paths of development and individual competencies.

In the future, artificial intelligence can also be an important player in the ecosystem, so we need to communicate our needs and intentions understandable for its language so that it can help in suggesting the path to achieving our personal goals. We discover that badges and icons can be a great tool to build a common language between different actors. The results of the project evaluation gave outstanding results. Over 60% of people felt closer to the group, which is a good help in the circumstances of growing alienation in the digital and mobile world. Most participants realized their own needs and dreams and made the first step to fulfill them. At the end we replicated and simulated talks with future employer HR, to give a chance to newly acquired competences Our model has been recommended for implementation across the country. However, I feel that hardly anyone in the technology sector understands the importance of soft technologies in the ecosystem of an intelligent country and city.

Even if it is underlined in the newest digital strategies for the EU there is no solution to support mass talent evaluation and constant mapping process. The core element of the Smart Cities Polska vision and strategy is to build smart cities on social capital and supporting it by delivering digital tools for competencies diagnosis and places for meetings and collaboration.

The next stage of our journey will be to conduct an experiment with our living lab on a larger scale and improve the technologies behind the group management and development processes of joint projects. Our new team members will be experts in artificial intelligence, bots, and e-learning platforms. We also want to start international cooperation, hence the translation of our working method into Russian and English.

What I have learned about myself during the project:

The test confirms that I am a participant characteristically (Factor S’) so I want to participate in culture and values, and a technician personality (Factor V’) so I want to gain the know-how to act efficiently. Temperamentally, I am averse to the group (Factor -O) and matter (Factor M) so I act as an independent analyst.

Does my current work fulfill my personal relationship needs?

The role of the coordinator of teams dealing with the development of systems for cities is in line with my social and technical needs. I work on both theoretical models and on occasionally while networking with people. In a living lab environment, I can work with young people so I can meet and recognize my participation needs.

This is a good predictor of satisfaction and harmonic career. Everyone is different, and we need to know how to team up in new teams in a very fast manner by using one language and methodology linked with AI This self-knowledge is enough to precisely match potential roles in the ecosystem and team behavior.

Using the latest methods, it takes less than 15 minutes to see myself structure with great precision. It is easier than quantitative tests based on questions like popular methodology DISC or MBTI, although the results are correlated.

1.5 meters is the new unit for smart city designers.

As Covid-19 continues to wreak havoc on public health and local economies around the world, one over-looked Corona casualty has been our collective space. Here in densely populated Amsterdam we are slowly, carefully, cautiously transitioning into a new urban landscape. As a smart city architect and designer, I wanted to start exploring this new 1.5 meter unit on the Marineterrein, Amsterdam’s inner-city testbed for future living environments. Using a computer fan, dental mirror, lego, and yes - a Laser pointer, I set out with my son to visualize what social distancing means on footbridges, fitness gardens, picnic tables, park benches, stairs, swimming docks and familiar Amsterdam furniture. Maker initiatives during the corona crisis

While experts point out that the coronavirus is likely to spread through the air, healthcare workers are currently walking around with surgical masks unable to filter airborne virus particles. With a snorkel mask attached to a certified filter, you may be fully protected.

That is reason for Pieter van Boheemen to take action. He wants to collect masks and calls on makers to help with the further design, validation and production of parts needed to connect the masks to certified P3 filters of various brands.

During the online meetup next Wednesday, April 8 at 8:00 PM, we will exchange knowledge with students, makers, medical technologists, producers and healthcare professionals who are working on the development of spacers with which Decathlon Easybreath snorkel masks, in combination with filters, can be used as a protective mask for doctors and nurses. The masks seem very suitable for that. Pending the results of a technical validation by TNO, among others, there is already a lot of experimentation with the possibilities.

Goal of the meetup

• First inventory of questions and answers about the design and use of the masks, connecting pieces and filters;

• Determine a strategy to collect, check, disinfect and distribute as many Decathlon Easybreath snorkel masks as possible;

• Strategies to set up a (decentralized) production chain for the production of spacers (a network of industry / makers / maker spaces);

• Strategies to accelerate validation and include the use of Easybreath masks in the RIVM / OMT advice.

Background information

RIVM (Dutch Agency for Health Care & Environment) still assumes that the coronavirus is not spread through aerosols that can arise during coughing and sneezing. A few days ago, the American MIT actually reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association that this is the case. Nature (Magazine) also argues that we have to err on the side of caution. For Pieter van Boheemen, who has the lead in this online meetup, the uncertainty is the reason for going for maximum protection. To make that possible, we need to provide a proven safe alternative to the FFP masks that are in great shortage. This alternative must be scalable to use in all healthcare institutions in the Netherlands. The snorkel masks and filters may offer this solution.

Pieter bases himself on the work of Stanford's Prakash Lab, an organization for curiosity-driven research. They work with scientists from the Swiss EPFL, the 3D printing firm FormLabs and anaesthetists from the Utah School of Medicine plus a colorful group of enthusiasts from all over the world. They keep track of their progress in a Google doc. Snorkel masks are also used for ventilation in Italy, Spain, France, Belgium, the Czech Republic and many more countries.

Similar initiatives have also started in the Netherlands: the Covid Lifesaver Mask, for example. The following article in the FD of 2 April shows that people are waiting on TNO for the results of a technical validation.

The difference between the Dutch and American initiative lies further in the filter. The COVID Life Saver Mask initiative uses HME filters (which are now used, for example, to connect tubing from respirators to a patient). Damen has also joined the initiative and may be able to supply thousands of Air-Wave filters. In these exceptional times, however, there is a shortage of everything. When you think of the thousands of people who work in healthcare, you understand that we need to look at more than just these Damen units and the HME filters. Prakash assumes a wider range of filters, including those of gas masks and dust masks (according to the P3 filter standard). The advantage of the P3 filters is that they last much longer than HME filters, which need to be replaced every 24 hours. The annoying thing is that every brand of P3 filter has a different connection. Pieter now designs and prints coupling pieces that he tests with filters from the brands 3M, Drager, Honeywell, Climax and Spasciani.

There are still many questions that creators and others can help. For example, we are looking for stocks of filters and parties that can validate the connections. There are also many practical questions about the wearing comfort of the masks, how well they can be sterilized and how the connectors and the filters can be reused.

Pending the validation and finding the answers to the questions above, we can already start collecting the correct masks. This mainly concerns the Decathlon Easybreath snorkel masks. After the meetup we will let you know how we are going to organize this.

A Bed Collection - Behind the Scenes

Join us on March 5th to meet Luca Kemkes, the designer behind our latest exhibition 'A Bed Collection'.

The exhibition is a showcase of streetwear pieces made entirely out of repurposed bedding. Kemkes will introduce the collection, providing some insights into her design process, and her challenge to the streetwear industry in particular to look past trends and think outside the box with materials and construction.

Having worked previously as a menswear designer at Calvin Klein, Kemkes' own streetwear collection makes use of bedding sourced from secondhand shops and online marketplaces. The design process is led by the variety of textures and details in each piece of material – showcasing intricate pattern making and patchwork techniques in creating a unique garment from every bit of fabric.

From the 29th of Feb til the 12th of March we have a new exhibition on display at Fashion for Good - a showcase of streetwear pieces from Luca Kemkes' 'A Bed Collection' - made entirely out of repurposed bedding.
Having worked previously as a menswear designer at Calvin Klein, Kemkes' own streetwear collection makes use of bedding sourced from secondhand shops and online marketplaces. The design process is led by the variety of textures and details in each piece of material – showcasing intricate pattern making and patchwork techniques in creating a unique garment from every bit of fabric.
We invite you to come and be inspired by how textile choices and garment construction can challenge the status quo of streetwear design.
The exhibition entry is free of charge, but cash donations are appreciated to support our museum!

Week of the Circular Economy #5: getting buy-in for products-as-a-serivce

The concept of products-as-a-service is a promising avenue to ensure more re-usability, more repairing, more recycling, and less needless consumption. Gerrard Street co-founder Dorus Galama shared insights about rentable headphones and when people commit to a circular product. Creating modular headphones was the easy part. The challenge was convincing customers to rent something they are used to buying. Check out this extract and follow the link for more:

"Metabolic: How did you convince people to try a product-as-a-service approach out before it became popular?

DG: What we did is we bought a caravan and installed our prototypes, before we even had a production line, and toured around the country to festivals. We staged a silent disco to market our research and development, and listened to the feedback from people. The main barrier we found was asking for a minimum of a one year commitment from customers, that was huge for them. Once we dropped that and allowed people to try it out for one month, that made it a lot easier. Now we go even further, putting out the offer of the first month for free.

On the website, we explain why the service exists. It is a combination of explaining the sustainability aspect and why this approach works for the customer. We find the sustainability doesn’t convince a lot of people to buy on its own. Most are actually convinced by the flexibility this approach offers: you can switch models to an upgraded model if anything breaks, or they can order in new parts at no cost.

In direct sales, sustainability doesn’t work too much. But when we ask the people who become paying customers what they like about it afterwards and what they tell their peers, sustainability is a big thing. It is not necessarily the reason to buy, but something people like to associate themselves with the brand about. It’s a better story.

Especially in the beginning, we found sustainability enthusiasts subscribed to support us, but didn’t stay with it and use the headphones because they weren’t necessarily music lovers, so they eventually cancel because it was just to support us. You can’t build a business off that."

Afternoon discussion on:

How can we in the neighboorhood, Slotervaart-Zuid, work together for more green and more nature?

This afternoon Kaskantine will present an overview of what we can do with the neighborhood to foster more greenery and nature in our environment.

We would like to discuss this topic with everyone who would like to work on conditions that are needed for this and which ideas could be attractive to all residents.

There will be a number of gardeners and architects with whom we can discuss our plans and who will also contribute with their own ideas.

One of the ideas is about the future "Riekerpark"; a part of the old sports complex, that will be located in the middle of the future neighborhood and which will become a park for the entire neighborhood with recreational opportunities.

We would like stimulate self-management and greater influence of citizens in the planning of this park. So we can all have better access to essential aspects of our neighborhood, such as non-commercial recreation and meeting space, clean water, spacious and attractive green areas etc..

Afterwards we can enjoy together a soup made by Casa Sofia!

Oprichtingsassembly voor Commoning "de Meent" op 21dec. a.s.

Commoning is met buurtbewoners lokale hulpbronnen beheren (land, water, energie, afval, cultuur, biodiversiteit, etc), omdat.... we het beter dan de overheid kunnen, omdat die hulpbronnen nu weglekken, omdat we buurtrechten hebben om die hulpbronnen duurzaam te gebruiken, omdat we mooie lokale kringlopen kunnen maken, omdat.... nou genoeg redenen!

De Kaskantine wordt lid, en hoopt dat dit de belangenorganisatie kan worden voor commoning initiatieven, en dat we kunnen werken aan voorwaarden waar lokaal beheer van hulpbronnen aan moeten voldoen. Kom je ook?

Science & Fictie: #1 De toekomst van de stad

Een talkshow over kunst en wetenschap: hoe vullen ze elkaar aan, hoe helpen ze elkaar vooruit, en hoe ziet de toekomst eruit? We poetsen de glazen bol op, en gaan door middel van feit en fictie vooruit kijken.

Deze keer: De Stad. Hoe ziet Amsterdam anno 2030 eruit? En anno 2100? Van wie is de stad nu, en later? Onder leiding van Teddy Tops gaan we in gesprek met o.a. kunstenaar Yuri Veerman (ontwerper), Massih Hutak (muzikant en schrijver) en Cody Hochstenbach (stadsgeograaf) en Najah Aouaki (urban strateeg).

Yuri Veerman
Yuri Veerman is een kunstenaar, ontwerper en performer die woont en werkt in Amsterdam. Door middel van posters, boeken, video's, websites, campagnes, vlaggen of performances vertelt Veerman ogenschijnlijk eenvoudige verhalen over een wereld die steeds complexer wordt. Veerman ziet zichzelf als een disruptor: iemand die bestaande normen en ideeën bevraagt door te spelen met onze verwachtingen.

In het voorjaar van 2019 maakte hij een poster met een portret van prins Bernhard van Oranje-Nassau, Van Vollenhoven, neef van koning Willem-Alexander, erop. ‘Nu in Amsterdam: de Prins met 349 huizen. Geen sprookje’, staat erop. Prins Bernhard is succesvol ondernemer en een grote speler op de Amsterdamse vastgoedmarkt. Eind 2017 onthulde het Het Parool dat Bernhard Jr. (mede)eigenaar is van 349 panden in Amsterdam, zowel privé als via bv’s. Daarmee is de prins een van de grootste investeerders op de hoofdstedelijke woningmarkt. En dat deugt niet, vindt Veerman: "Iemand van koninklijke bloede die de sociale infrastructuur gebruikt om geld te verdienen. Ik vind dat niet kunnen.”

Massih Hutak
Massih Hutak is muzikant en schrijver. In 2011 publiceerde hij de roman ‘Toen God nog in ons geloofde’. Daarnaast schreef hij onder andere voor de Volkskrant, Het Parool, Das Magazin, De Correspondent en is hij columnist (druktemaker) voor De Nieuws BV.

Vanaf 2012 gaf hij Nederlands en Maatschappijleer op een vmbo-school in Amsterdam-Noord. In 2016 stopte hij met zijn werk als leraar om zich te kunnen richten op zijn muziek. Datzelfde jaar kwam zijn eerste EP ‘ERROR’ uit.

Hutak werd door Het Parool uitgeroepen tot 1 van de 17 jonge creatieve talenten van 2017.

Cody Hochstenbach
Cody Hochstenbach is stadsgeograaf en postdoctoraal onderzoeker in stedelijke geografie aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam, gespecialiseerd in sociale en ruimtelijke ongelijkheden op de woningmarkt en in steden. In 2017 verdedigde hij zijn proefschrift ‘Inequaltiy in the gentrifying European city’ Cum Laude en ontving in 2019 de NWO VENI-beurs, een belangrijke beurs voor net gepromoveerde wetenschappers.

Najah Aouaki
Najah Aouaki is urban strateeg, econoom en creatief entrepreneur die streeft naar een inclusieve stad. In haar werk probeert ze toegankelijke programma’s te creëren voor meer diverse doelgroepen en probeert innovaties te implementeren op het gebied van ondernemerschap.

Met haar project ‘Javakwartier‘ zorgt ze ervoor dat “de komst van de ‘nieuwe bewoners’ de lokale winkeliers niet fataal wordt”.

On the 17th of October in Almere, we welcome you to join us in our search for innovation and the impact of 5G on topics related to the Floriade: smart mobility, IoT/Smart City, Smart Farming, Drone delivery and 5G design. In a public-private partnership (Almere, Floriade and BTG), we have created a program which is designed around sharing the I-street strategy of the Floriade, sharing the 'digital city' strategy of Almere, learning of best practices of Amsterdam Smart City and taking a deep dive into the challenges of the Floriade.

So....be inspired, be engaged and standby to share your knowledge with your peers! We are hoping to attract entrepreneurs, IT suppliers, government officials and more.....
