Exciting news! We're happy to announce the launch of the Circular Innovation Collective program guide!

Launched during the #WeekofCircularEconomy2024, the guide is a practical roadmap for local governments to foster circular innovation within their cities and regions.

Gathering insights from its first pilot program in the Metropolitan Region Amsterdam, the guide offers practical and comprehensive instructions for scoping out, designing, and executing local innovation programs. Here’s what Egon van Wees from Amsterdam Impact said about the program:

"To transition to an impact economy we need to radically change our approach. We need to work with front runners and entrepreneurs that tackle societal challenges and influence the broader ecosystem. With the CIC approach you can do just that.” - Egon Van Wees, Program Coordinator, Amsterdam Impact (CIC program Funder).

Wanting to empower other cities and regions across Europe, the CIC is sharing its FREE program guide to accelerate the transition to the new circular economy.

The Circular Innovation Collective is a consortium of impact-driven organizations initiated by Metabolic, Impact Hub Amsterdam, and Bankers without Boundaries. With the support of the City of Amsterdam (Amsterdam Impact), The DOEN Foundation, and Goldschmeding Foundation, this initiative specifically targeted achieving 70% circular textiles in the Metropolitan Region Amsterdam by 2030. Demonstrating the potential for impactful change, CIC is now dedicated to sharing its knowledge, experience, and strategies in an open-source manner.

Op 13 november hadden we de eerste wereldwijde donut dag en ook in Amsterdam was het weer een waar feest. Nu is het natuurlijk belangrijk om die energie vast te houden! Daarom organiseren we op donderdag 14 december een community meetup waar de goede gesprekken die tijdens het donut festival weer kunnen worden voortgezet. 

Geen zorgen, aanwezigheid bij het festival is geen vereiste. Kon je er niet bij zijn? Dan is dit een mooi moment om weer aan te sluiten!

In aanloop naar de meetup gaan we alle mooie resultaten van de Amsterdam Donut Dag verwerken en dan horen jullie meer van ons voor de planning van deze community meet up.

Groter dan ooit: Amsterdam Donut Dag 13 november - schrijf je nu in!**

De langverwachte Amsterdam Donut Dag staat bijna voor de deur! Op 13 november duiken we in de wereld van de Donut Economie en laten we zien hoe de gezamenlijke inspanning van pioniers Amsterdam tegen 2025 dichter bij de Donut brengt.

Dit jaar is extra bijzonder, want het markeert de allereerste Wereldwijde Donut Dag onder het motto 'Lokale Actie, Mondiale Connectie.' Wereldwijd organiseren meer dan 30 groepen en netwerken lokale Donut Festivals!

Verspreid over Amsterdam vinden op maandag 13 november in totaal 15 Donut-sessies plaats. Hier laten we samen zien dat de Donut Economie geen theoretisch model is, maar een praktische benadering. Verwacht geen vage beloftes, maar concrete voorbeelden van initiatieven binnen de stad, zowel groot als klein.

's Avonds komen we samen in Pakhuis de Zwijger om samen met pioniers en elkaar te dromen en te visualiseren hoe Amsterdam eruit zou kunnen zien in 2025. Mis deze geweldige kans niet! Ben jij erbij?

The Social Enterprise World Forum (SEWF) is a global annual flagship event that brings together social entrepreneurs, policymakers, investors, academics and other impact-led professionals to strengthen impact entrepreneurship and encourage systemic change.

This year, the main event takes place in Amsterdam Noord and online and is co-hosted by Amsterdam Impact, the City of Amsterdam’s impact entrepreneurship initiative, and Social Enterprise NL.

Op 10 oktober organiseren we vanuit Amsterdam Smart City een werksessie waarin we de vraag willen beantwoorden: "Hoe brengen we circulariteit naar het MKB?". Deze sessie wordt georganiseerd in samenwerking met de gemeente Amsterdam, en er zullen nog meer overheden aanwezig zijn. Om deze vraag goed te beantwoorden hebben we de input van echte MKB'ers nodig. We willen weten waar ze tegen aan lopen en wat overheden beter kunnen doen om ze te helpen.

Amsterdam, 10 augustus - Op woensdag 13 september is het zo ver: met de oprichting van stichting N.E.W. (Never Ever Waste) zet New Optimist de revolutionaire stap naar statiegeld op kleding. Het statiegeldsysteem maakt 100% circulariteit mogelijk en geeft de consument de touwtjes in handen om te zorgen dat zijn of haar favoriete kledingstuk uiteindelijk weer onderdeel wordt van de mode-circle of life. New Optimist maakt het systeem toegankelijk voor andere modemerken in de nabije toekomst. Kleding hoeft nooit meer te eindigen als afval.

In de afgelopen 20 jaar verdrievoudigde de hoeveelheid afgedankte kleding in Europa van 550 duizend ton naar bijna 1,7 miljoen ton textiel, presenteert het rapport a EU-milieua-gentschap EEA begin 2023. Wat blijkt? 87% van dit afgedankte textiel, wordt vandaag de dag nog steeds geëxporteerd naar Azië en Afrika. Het merendeel belandt op stortplaatsen of informele afvalstromen.

Uit recent onderzoek verricht door Changing Marketing Foundation, wordt geconcludeerd dat Greenwashing nog altijd rijkelijk aanwezig is. Kledingstukken die netjes door de consument werden ingeleverd voor recycling bij verschillende merken, werden middels geplaatste Apple Airtags gevolgd. Het blijkt dat driekwart werd verbrand, opgeslagen in magazijnen of verscheept naar arme landen.

Volgens de uitgebreide producentenverantwoordelijkheid (UPV) voor textiel zijn kledingproducenten in Nederland vanaf 1 juli 2023 verantwoordelijk voor de textielproducten wanneer zij afval zijn geworden en moeten het afvalbeheer van deze producten organiseren. EU-milieu-agentschap EEA noemt de verschuiving van inzamelingsverantwoordelijkheid een risico. Door onverantwoorde inzamelprocessen in een aanzienlijk deel van de mode-industrie,
kan het exportvolume van afgedankte kleding alleen maar verder toenemen.

Stichting N.E.W. (Never Ever Waste)

Stichting N.E.W. is een initiatief van New Optimist, welke de statiegeld gelden beheert voor alle kledingmerken die deelnemen aan dit statiegeldsysteem. New Optimist roept andere duurzame kledingmerken op zich aan te sluiten bij Stichting N.E.W., en statiegeld in te zetten om kleding die ze op de markt brengen circulair te maken.
Om de steeds maar groeiende textiel afvalberg tegen te gaan, introduceert New Optimist Stichting N.E.W. (Never Ever Waste): het eerste statiegeld platform voor kleding. Dit nieuwe systeem garandeert dat jouw kleding wordt gerecycled en dat je het hele proces tot aan recycling kan volgen. Met een kledingstuk met statiegeld maak je de mode cirkel 100% circulair en laat je aan iedereen zien dat kleding niet als afval hoeft te eindigen.

Candour.Digital

New Optimist, pionier in het veranderen van de mode-industrie, heeft dit digitale statiegeldsysteem ontwikkeld, in samenwerking met Cadour.Digital voor Stichting N.E.W.
Candour.Digital is een IT-startup die zich richt op digitale product paspoorten. Door slim gebruik van QR-codes en blockchain technologie, kunnen individuele kleding stukken in de hele levensloop gevolgd worden.

Geen circulariteit zonder jou!

Hoe werkt het statiegeldsysteem?

1. Productaanschaf
Bij aankoop van een New Optimist kledingstuk met statiegeld wordt er een klein bedrag extra berekend.  Het statiegeld varieert tussen de €2.5 en €10, afhankelijk van de prijs van het kledingstuk. Op de hangtag van het kledingstuk is zichtbaar hoeveel statiegeld op het kledingstuk zit. Je kan dit ook zien door het QR label te scannen

2. Items retourneren
Wanneer het artikel niet meer gedragen wordt,
kan het kledingstuk worden ingeleverd om het een tweede leven te geven. Dit kan bij aangesloten winkels of met een retour procedure via New Optimist.

3. Een nieuw leven
Het maakt niet uit in welke staat het item is. New Optimist bekijkt of het nog tweedehands verkocht kan worden (ook dat kan gevolgd worden via de QR-code), maar uiteindelijk wordt de kleding vervezeld en verwerkt tot nieuwe garen.  Niks gaat verloren. 100% circulair!
Via de QR-code kan circulaire route van elk kledingstuk worden gevolgd.

YES statiegeld. NO textile waste!

New Optimist

Voor New Optimist is circulariteit, naast lokaal en sociaal ondernemerschap, al vanaf de oprichting in 2020 bepalend. De mode van New Optimist is ontworpen voor circulariteit:
het merk zorgt ervoor dat elk kledingstuk voor 100 procent gerecycled kan worden. Om mode echt 100% circulair te maken, introduceert New Optimist het eerste statiegeld platform voor kleding. Dit nieuwe systeem, dat ontwikkeld is samen met Candour.Digital, garandeert dat jouw kleding wordt gerecycled en dat je het hele proces tot aan recycling kan volgen.

Cotton is perhaps the world's most well-known fabric, however, many stories behind cotton are lesser known. These untold and sometimes unexpected perspectives have been collected and brought together in the exhibition, Knowing Cotton Otherwise. 

In the third and final chapter, Flipping the Script, designers Nsimba Valene Lontanga and Angelo Carlos Marcus Elizabeth take you on a journey through their heritage and culture while challenging you to reimagine fundamental concepts within the realm of fashion and design.  

The exhibition unpacks and brings into question established ideas of 'classic' and 'basic' style staples, as well as redefining 'typically African' design and print. What happens when we reconsider our preconceived ideas of what cotton represents around the world? 

Knowing Cotton Otherwise is open to the public until 16 October 2023 at the Fashion for Good Museum, Rokin 102,  Amsterdam.

Join us on March 22 for an insightful webinar on Preventing Waste & Closing Material Loops.

The webinar will be opened by an expert from the United Nations Environment Programme. This introduction is followed by a presentation of Merel Schaap, Impact Analyst at Seenons, who will share how a technology platform can enable the circular economy. We will conclude the session with presentations on challenges by different municipalities, nonprofits and companies that are looking for solutions. These challenges are part of CircleHub's competition which runs until June 20. Winning solutions will be awarded or will receive investment to carry out a Proof of Concept.

The session is part of CircleHub's webinar series happening this March and April. The series consists of four sessions, which are opened by an expert from the United Nations Environment Programme who will give a Keynote on the subject, followed by presentations of best practices around the globe. The session will be closed with information on the competition and presentation by the organizations behind the challenges on our platform.

WHAT IS THE CIRCULAR TEXTILE INNOVATION ACCELERATOR?
After extensive research, the Circular Innovation Collective has identified the most urgent innovation gaps to create a circular textile chain. So we scouted (inter)national startups and SMEs with high-value, innovative circular solutions in the areas of Refuse, Rethink, Reduce, Reuse and Repair.

The selected companies participated in various workshops and masterclasses on systemic change, strategic partnerships and material usage in the circular economy and received coaching and mentorship from sector experts, experienced entrepreneurs and finance professionals.

Last year we introduced Knowing Cotton Otherwise, a multidisciplinary exhibition, covering various aspects of this versatile fibre — from its burdened history to sustainable initiatives and innovative implementations worldwide. Through this new chapter, Bodies of Work, the experience of human bodies entangled in (forced) labour in the story of cotton are amplified. With the addition of works by Sha’Mira Covington and Tricia Nganga Mokosi, the exhibition explores some of the complex issues related to cotton's history and the use and re-use of this fabric in fashion and tech. The exhibition also showcases innovative technologies in material traceability and natural fibre recycling from Fashion for Good Innovators Oritain and Natural Fiber Welding. The continuation of the exhibition invites you to consider your own body as you move through space as a spectator in the narrative. How do you position yourself within the community of stories presented here?

At a time of year when overconsumption is encouraged by many fast fashion brands, our reminder today and every day is to take a moment to pause before making a purchase, and remind ourselves that there's nothing more sustainable than taking care of and wearing what we already have in our closets! Before discarding your fashion garment or an item that’s damaged, try to repair and mend it — give your clothes a second life and embrace imperfections! Our experience? It will become the showpiece of your wardrobe.

In collaboration with Gemeente Amsterdam and New Order of Fashion, on November 25 and 26 from 10:00-17:00, you will be able to bring an item that you want to upcycle or repair to the Fashion for Good Museum (Rokin 102, Amsterdam). Upcycle artist Valentine Tinchant and tailor Atilla Kiliç from de Stadspas network, will repurpose your pre-loved items into new creations.
On November 25th and 26th we offer a free entrance to learn about the past, present and future of sustainable fashion and discover brands and innovations who are making sustainable fashion a reality.

You are also welcome to donate your unworn items at the Fashion for Good Museum where we collect textiles in the City Textile Cart from the Gemeente Amsterdam.

Please be mindful of the time, creativity and skills of the designers since they are taking care of your clothes, therefore limited spots are available. Most repairs and creations will be able to be on-the-spot (30 min). Alterations will be either machine based or hand-stitched depending on what is required.

De kledingindustrie is één van de meest vervuilende industrieën op aarde. Het grootste probleem is dat er simpelweg te veel kleding geproduceerd wordt. Exhibition Knowing Cotton Otherwise

Centred on collectivity and community, local artists have been invited to present work that connects and intersects with different themes relating to the story of cotton. By mixing styles and stories, Knowing Cotton Otherwise creates a multifaceted experience, inviting you to reflect, question, play and wonder. 

Fashion, art and social change
Built around different themes telling the story of cotton, the exhibition highlights the relationship between cotton and the fashion industry, the role of cotton in an increasingly intertwined web of global cultures, and the sustainable innovations driving its circular transformation. The exhibition provides questions such as where does cotton come from? How is it grown? What is the future of cotton and the role of innovation? How should we relate to the more questionable aspects of cotton, from its history of forced migration to more modern-day challenges? And how can we celebrate cotton, the connections it creates and the opportunities around it?

Collectivity and Community
Knowing Cotton Otherwise is presented in different phases throughout the year in which the exhibition grows and changes. The first phase features artists Benoît Gilles Michel, Caithlin Courtney Chong, Mario Gonsalves, Niño Divino, Noah Cohen, Nsimba Valene and Tasio Bidegain as well as the collectives OSSO Archive, Studio Papa and The Gang is Beautiful. The exhibition also showcases innovative technologies in material traceability and dyeing from Fashion for Good Innovators Oritain and Officina39. Knowing Cotton Otherwise invites you to question the content presented, examine your ideas and engage together in a process of self-reflection and critical consideration.

13 oktober 2022 - Inspiratiesessie - Eerste hulp bij klimaatstress
Na twee zomers kamperen in je tentje in Nederland wil je eindelijk weer eens op een verre vliegvakantie. Maar je schaamt je om het aan anderen te vertellen. Wil je lang douchen, maar vindt jouw partner dat niet goed voor het milieu? Twijfel jij ook weleens aan wat je nou echt kan doen voor een beter klimaat en ben je daar soms gestrest over? Of valt het in jouw ogen allemaal wel mee? In de inspiratiesessie Eerste hulp bij klimaatstress gaan we in gesprek over persoonlijke ervaringen met klimaatverandering. 27 oktober 2022 - Lezing - Een hoopvolle toekomst
Klimaatverandering is de grootste bedreiging van het leven op aarde. Het is dan ook logisch dat de gevolgen soms zorgen voor een pessimistisch gevoel. En hoe meer je je in het onderwerp verdiept, des te sterker dat gevoel kan worden. In deze lezing legt cultuursocioloog Ruben Jacobs uit hoe we zover zijn gekomen en waar onze verantwoordelijkheid ligt. Maar hij vertelt vooral over hoop in tijden van klimaatverandering en welk verhaal we onze kinderen straks kunnen vertellen. Lees meer en reserveer tickets.

10 november 2022 - Stand up comedy - Comedy for Climate
Klimaatopwarming is niet het meest grappige onderwerp. Toch proberen we daar door middel van een stand-up comedy avond voor één keer verandering in te brengen. Waarbij we lachen om onszelf en het klimaat. Met alleen een microfoon zetten de comedians van Het Comedyhuis zware klimaatonderwerpen om in luchtige grappen. Een lekker avondje lachen dus. Je kent het vast wel: je kledingkast puilt uit en toch heb je niets om aan te trekken. Vaak kun je anderen blij maken met jouw kleren – en anderen jou. Dus verzamel de kleding die jij niet meer draagt en kom naar de kledingruil in De Studio van NEMO. Onder het genot van een drankje ruil je de leukste jurken, truien en shirts. Voor een bezoek aan een activiteit op donderdagavond reserveer je een apart ticket. De toegangsprijs is: € 7,50. Het programma is inclusief een bezoek aan de tentoonstelling Energy Junkies. Reserveer hier je ticket.

De activiteiten starten om 20.00 uur. Voorafgaand kun je vanaf 19.00 uur de tentoonstelling Energy Junkies bezoeken.

De Studio van NEMO

De Studio is een extra locatie van NEMO Science Museum op het Marineterrein in Amsterdam. De programmering in De Studio is speciaal voor volwassenen.

Wil jij weten hoe je het beste omgaat met emoties rondom het klimaat? Wil jij een avondje lachen om jezelf en het klimaat? Of heb jij kleding die je niet meer draagt die je wilt ruilen? Voor het derde jaar wordt het Steiger Festival georganiseerd in Almere. Het is een 3 daags festival, gericht op circulaire economie en duurzaamheid, waar we 2500 bezoekers verwachten.

Vrijdag 7 oktober is er een besloten middagprogramma  waarvoor jij van harte bent uitgenodigd. Tijdens dit middagprogramma bieden we twee workshops aan over productpromotie. In de eerste workshop leer je alles over productfotografie en in de tweede workshop gaan we in op het schrijven van (web) teksten. Na de workshops is er tijd voor een borrel en vertellen we je meer over wat we de afgelopen jaren hebben gedaan op De Steiger en onze visie voor de toekomst. Daarnaast krijgen jullie een presentatie over de Boombom en Circuloco en sluiten we de dag af met een borrel met hapje en drankje.

Het gehele middag programma vindt plaats in de Steiger Festival tent, tegenover Rataplan, De Steiger 51.
