Part 3: Jan Pel from Amsterdam Oud-West (article in Dutch)**

“Ik maak niet hele bewuste keuzes in het leven. Ik laat me meer leiden door wat er is.” Jan (25) staat op het punt om voor 3 maanden naar Australië te vertrekken, de liefde achterna. Toen hij een tijdje geleden voor zijn studie Wiskunde in Oslo verbleef, ontmoette hij daar de Australische Gina en werd verliefd. Nu heeft hij zijn master afgerond en gaat hij haar opzoeken. Daarna ziet hij wel wat de volgende stap is.

Jan woont sinds kort onder zijn zusje Judith (23) op de vierde verdieping van een pand in Amsterdam Oud-West dat stamt uit 1880. Hoewel zij apart van elkaar wonen, zijn hun twee appartementen toch onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden. Broer en zus delen namelijk naast een wasmachine, ook zonnepanelen, een zonneboiler en een warmtepomp. Nadat ze de verdiepingen kochten begin 2015, hebben ze deze helemaal energieneutraal verbouwd. Voor de meeste huiseigenaren is dat een hele bewust keuze maar Jan en Judith is het eigenlijk meer overkomen.

Hier een muurtje, daar een deurtje en klaar

Nadat de koop rond was, nam hun moeder Paulien (54) het voortouw in de verbouwing van de bovenverdiepingen. “Dat ging gewoon zo omdat ik als volwassene nou eenmaal wat meer ervaring heb in dat soort dingen.” Ze schakelde een aannemer in met wie ze ervaring had. Jan vond dat wel best. “Ik was er niet heel bewust mee bezig, dat hele verbouwen. Ik dacht dat gaat gewoon volgens de standaarden. Hier een muurtje, daar een deurtje en klaar.”

Ik kon mezelf wel voor mijn hoofd slaan

De bouwtekeningen waren gemaakt en de verbouwing was al begonnen, toen de aannemer aan Paulien vroeg of ze weleens hadden overwogen ook een aantal duurzame maatregelen toe te passen in de appartementen. “Ik kon mezelf wel voor mijn hoofd slaan toen hij dat vroeg. Dat ik daar zelf niet op was gekomen. Zo stom vond ik dat!”

Paulien vertelt dat ze opgroeide in een ‘PvdA milieu’. Maatschappelijke betrokkenheid werd haar met de paplepel ingegoten. “Je nuttig maken, dat was belangrijk. In onze kring zaten ook veel milieubewuste mensen. Het was een bekend thema.” Op de middelbare school maakte ze een werkstuk over zonne-energie en tijdens haar studententijd deed ze vrijwilligerswerk voor Milieudefensie. “In onze tijd was het debat rond kernenergie heel erg hot. Het waren onderwerpen die leefden bij mij. En nog steeds. Ik heb bijvoorbeeld een ontzettend hekel aan verspilling. Als een apparaat kapot gaat, kijk ik altijd eerst of het nog gerepareerd kan worden. Ik zou het nooit zomaar meteen weggooien”.

Groene salonsocialisten

Ook voor Jan was het zeker geen onbekend onderwerp “Op de middelbare school had ik de documentaire ‘An inconvenient truth’ gezien. Dat maakte toen veel indruk op ons. Het klimaatprobleem moet gewoon opgelost worden.” Toch had ook hij voor de verbouwing van zijn eigen appartement de link niet gelegd. Lachend zegt Paulien: “Wij zijn dus eigenlijk een soort groene versie van salonsocialisten! Als de aannemer het niet had geopperd, was het gewoon niet gebeurd!”

Een rendement van 700%

Hoewel ze direct enthousiast waren over het voorstel van de aannemer, en hem groen licht gaven om ermee aan de slag te gaan, waren Jan, Judith en Paulien zelf nauwelijks betrokken bij de energie neutrale verbouwing. Alle ideeën werden aangedragen en uitgevoerd door de aannemer en een betrokken energieadviseur. Zij ontfermden zich ook over het aanvragen van de vergunningen en de subsidies.

Achteraf vindt Jan dat eigenlijk wel jammer. Toen de aannemer hem tijdens de verbouwing een keer vertelde dat de warmtepomp een rendement van 700%* heeft, was zijn interesse gewekt. “Ik dacht hoe kan dat nou? Toen wilde ik precies weten hoe het zat. Ik had het eigenlijk wel leuk gevonden om zelf wat meer uit te zoeken en te vergelijken maar toen wisten we er gewoon niet genoeg van. Nu begrijp ik pas hoe die systemen werken en welke keuzes je hebt.” Hij voegt daar aan toe: “Misschien was het wel goed geweest als ik me er wat eerder in was gaan verdiepen. Er zijn wel wat dingen in het ontwerpproces niet zo handig gedaan. We hebben bijvoorbeeld een heel groot buffervat van 500 liter. Die is naast mijn bed terecht gekomen op de plek van mijn ingebouwde klerenkast. Die ben ik nu dus kwijt.”

Groen dak en opvang regenwater

Voor Paulien was de verbouwing best een uitdaging: “We dachten een simpele verbouwing te doen en uiteindelijk duurde het drie kwart jaar. Ook vond ik het lastig dat ik zo weinig technische kennis heb. Ik voelde me af en toe echt een dombo.” Toch zou ze het zo weer doen: “Stel dat ik nu een huis zou moeten gaan verbouwen, dan zou ik zelfs nog verder willen gaan. Met een groen dak bijvoorbeeld en opvang van regenwater voor het doorspoelen van de wc. Dat lijkt me echt hartstikke leuk!” Jan vult direct aan: “Ja inderdaad niet alleen goed maar ook gewoon leuk dat je dat dan allemaal zo zelf weer gebruikt! Het is toch ook echt vet dat je je eigen energie opwekt. En die techniek, ik vind het echt gaaf!”

Ondanks dat de verbouwing een stuk langer duurde dan gepland, is Jan blij met het resultaat: “De stroomrekening is echt heel laag, zo’n €5 per maand. Omdat het zo goed geïsoleerd is, wordt het namelijk nooit echt koud in huis. En koken op inductieplaten is ook gewoon veel makkelijker” Paulien voegt daar aan toe*: “Het is wel een beetje een experiment natuurlijk. Je moet afwachten of die installaties ook zo goed blijven werken in de toekomst maar de zonnepanelen doen het echt heel goed. Die leveren veel op, meer dan verwacht zelfs.”*

Jan en Paulien zijn niet de enigen die geïnspireerd zijn geraakt door de verbouwing. Hans, de eigenaar van de rest van appartementen in het pand en tevens de oom van Jan, is aan de slag gegaan met isolatie. En ook Judith, die er in eerste instantie het minst mee bezig was, heeft de smaak te pakken. Alhoewel haar interesse meer in de duurzame voedingshoek zit. Paulien vertelt dat Judith, nadat zij de documentaire ‘Cowspiracy’ gezien had, om was. “Vroeger deed je haar geen groter plezier met worstjes bij het ontbijt maar dat is nu echt uit den boze”

Tip van Jan & Paulien:
• Isoleer je huis, dat levert zoveel op. Een ‘no-brainer’!
• Werk met een aannemer die je echt vertrouwt en kies niet blindelings voor de goedkoopste optie.
• Begin er op tijd mee. Wij konden nog nét aanpassingen doen in de plannen maar als je iets verder bent, is het te laat .

How to adjust public space real time to its users? This is the leading question in the Co-ReUs action-research project. The project brings together urban designers, interactive concept developers and local stakeholders and explores hands on the development of a possible responsive urban space. Running cities on clean energy may be technically feasible, but it is very tricky from an organisational and economic point of view. The EU project City-Zen is readying hearts and minds for the challenge. The Delft Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment is doing its bit in the form of trial projects, serious gaming and Roadshows through European cities.

Say ‘Amsterdam ArenA’ and inevitably you mean ‘football stadium’. But the imposing structure in Amsterdam Zuidoost is far more than that. Henk van Raan, chief innovation officer at Amsterdam ArenA says: “It’s an incubator, a knowledge center and catalyst for innovations that will shape the city of the future.”

That is not just a meaningless statement. Amsterdam ArenA has been committed to sustainability and innovation for years. The ArenA implemented a multi-year plan entitled ‘ArenA: Vanzelfsprekend Duurzaam’ (‘ArenA: Naturally Sustainable') between 2010 and 2015 and that included several sustainable initiatives.

For example, the stadium now has 4,200 solar panels on the roof and uses Dutch wind energy to provide its remaining electricity needs. In addition, the ArenA is heated with urban heat from [the local suburb] Diemen and it is cooled with water from the [nearby lake] Ouderkerkerplas. Also, in recent years, the stadium decreased waste production by as much as 150,000 kg through working together with suppliers, tenants and visitors.

“Amsterdam ArenA is a public-private initiative.’ Van Raan explains: “In other words, the stadium was built with the help of social funding. Therefore, we feel a responsibility to the area and we want to return something to society.”

Sustainable innovation
Having made great progress in sustainability, in the past two years the stadium has been actively engaged in a new program: innovation. Van Raan: “In terms of the container concept ‘smart cities’, we were asked to accelerate the development of smart applications for Amsterdam city.”

Van Raan knows that such innovations are essential for world cities like Amsterdam, where pressure on facilities such as shops, public transport and infrastructure is only increasing: “Digitalization can play a major role in keeping cities livable in the future. That’s why there is a rising demand for sensors and smart applications.”

In the collaborative project that followed, the parties involved decided that all innovations important to the development of Amsterdam should first be tested in and around Amsterdam ArenA. The stadium also set up its own investment program, reserving € 50m for innovation and sustainability. Van Raan: “Our ambition is to be the world’s most innovative stadium by 2020, partly because in that year we will be one of the cities hosting the European Championships. We’re bucking the trend in our market in a big way: we’re not aiming to expand our stadium – which is the norm – we’re focusing on innovation.”

Acting as incubator for innovations in the field of digitization immediately enables Amsterdam ArenA to explore a new economy. Van Raan expects digitalization and the emergence of smart applications to bring about a major economic transition. “Digitization inevitably leads to a transition from ownership to service. Mobility-as-a-service, lighting-as-a-service, energy-as-a-service. Indeed, the future belongs to service.”

“BY 2020, THE ARENA MUST BE THE MOST INNOVATIVE STADIUM IN THE WORLD”

Creating Impact
Van Raan reckons that the deadline of 2020 is a good driver that will create a real impact. “It will happen because, by 2020, the ArenA must be the most innovative stadium in the world.” He adds: “Worldwide there are hundreds of initiatives happening in the field of smart cities, but so far all of them are still in pilot project stage. In Amsterdam ArenA, we’re stepping up to the next level.”

That’s why the stadium must be the ideal test ground for innovations in smart city applications. Van Raan: "We have a roadmap for developing innovations around in six themes: digital connectivity, fan experience, customer travel, safety & security, sustainability & circular economy and facility management. The prerequisite for innovations in all these themes is connectivity.”

Energy company
The first result of this innovation program is fast becoming impressive reality. In the Amsterdam ArenA car park, a 4 megawatt storage battery is under construction as we speak. The new storage battery will contain 280 recycled Nissan Leaf batteries. Due to be delivered in the fourth quarter of 2017, the battery will be deployed to support and stabilize the national grid at times of peak demand and supply. Besides that, the battery will enable the stadium to add another string to its bow and also go through life as Amsterdam Energy ArenA BV.

“Energy storage can lead to huge reductions in CO2 emissions,” says Van Raan. "Coal and gas stations have to run the whole day to meet a few peaks in demand or supply. But imagine if you could meet those peaks with energy stored in batteries: then you could switch off the coal power stations. That will be the core function of the storage battery we are building at the moment.”

Living lab
In addition, the battery will act as a living lab in the field of energy storage and smart grid applications. The storage battery is only the beginning, says Van Raan. “We’re using second-hand Nissan Leaf batteries, which are fairly limited. But cars of the future will have an active radius of at least 500 km. Effectively they will become mobile storage batteries that will be able to stabilize the grid if our parking facilities make that possible. This summer, the ArenA will begin installing the first ten charging stations that will allow electric cars to both recharge and return surplus energy to the grid.”

Van Raan illustrates the benefits with a bit of arithmetic: “If some 10 percent of the population is driving round in electric cars by the year 2020, then 10 percent of the parking in Amsterdam Zuidoost will have to facilitate that. This means that on a busy day 1,200 electric cars would be connected to the grid. Then we’d be talking about 32 megawatts of storage capacity. That would cover the energy demand for the whole district. We’re developing services of the future based on the storage battery.”

At the moment, Amsterdam ArenA is the first and only stadium to offer energy storage as a service. Van Raan expects that this won’t be the case for long. “We’re noticing that other big parties, both at home and abroad are also in a hurry to get started on this. People are coming to us from places like Washington and Singapore with the question: how are you doing it?”

“CARS OF THE FUTURE WILL BE MOBILE STORAGE BATTERIES”

Changing role
Initiatives like the storage battery are changing the role Amsterdam ArenA is playing in the surrounding region. “Our core business is and will always be hosting events, focusing on football,” says Van Raan. “But at the same time, we are increasingly becoming the incubator and driver of innovation and new developments in the field of sustainability and digitization. Our role in this is getting bigger the more knowledge and experience we gain.”

“Basically, a city is one big piece of hardware,” Van Raan adds. “The only way you find out how that hardware works and what improvements would be possible is by making yourself a part of it. By getting involved right in the middle of things. The ArenA has been active in Amsterdam Zuidoost for years. Now we’ve become a knowledge center in the field of multifunctionality, sustainability and innovation in the region. We've been working on it for several years now.”

Most sustainable and innovative stadium in the world
By 2020, Amsterdam ArenA has to be the most sustainable and innovative stadium in the world. According to Van Raan, the stadium is well under way to achieving this goal: “I think we’re making a positive mark, we’ve put ourselves on the map worldwide. At the same time, our ambitions for 2020 reach sky high. That means we have more than enough on our to-do list to make sure we succeed.” And the work on that to-do list is going well. For example, in two months’ time the stadium will have a 5G network), and this summer it will act as field lab for big data applications. External SME innovators can now use the ArenA to test drive big data innovations, which can improve business services. “So, we’ll keep on innovating. The role of field lab is another completely new departure for the Amsterdam ArenA,” concludes Van Raan.

Looking for innovative ideas for your company?

Get acquainted with Amsterdams most innovative and valuable ideas at the Amsterdam Science & Innovation Award on June 21.

Prior to the festive award final, researchers and students present their ideas in Medical Technology, ICT, Social Sciences and Humanities, Life Sciences, Creative sector & Beta Technical Sciences during the Business & Science event to entrepreneurs who are keen to discover more about the latest research.

For centuries, street lamps were only used to lighten your streets. But nowadays, technology is thus far, that they can be used for so much more. In Green Village (Delft University) a number of companies are investigating the possibilities to make street lamps the brain of the city.

They are everywhere, are a stable and high basis, and are connected to the powergrid. Street lamps offer many possibilities to contribute to smart cities, for instance:

* safety camera’s
* Wifi sensors
* antennas
* devices to measure air quality, traffic congestion or noise

What? They can even be used to verify if a parking space is available, or why not use them to charge electric cars?

In Green Village, a group of companies will test the possibilities of street lamps for smart cities. In fact, the term street lamp does not fit any more, the new commonly accepted name is ‘Smart City Hubs’ (no relationship with the name of this website).

What is unique about this concept? In Green Village, a city infrastructure is created, in which companies, students, startups, researchers and other stakeholders can work together to develop and test new products. It is a real life version of a city centre, where city governments can monitor developments in real time.

The street lamp will become the iPhone of the street. While thusfar companies did only attach sensors and devices to street lamps, in Green Village sensors and devices will be fully integrated in the street lamps (clip-ons).

Armin van Buuren - één van de grootste internationale dj’s en producers van de wereld op gebied van elektronische muziek - gaf vrijdag en zaterdag 12 en 13 mei een show in de Amsterdam ArenA. Armin doet de muziek, en ‘Het Operationeel Mobiliteitscentrum’ (OMC) zorgt voor de rest.

‘The Best Of Armin Only’ is de aftrap van het concertseizoen in de Amsterdam ArenA. Tijdens Armin en tijdens komende evenementen coördineert Het Operationeel Mobiliteitscentrum (OMC) als actiecentrum en verkeerscentrale om bezoekers optimaal te voorzien van gastvrijheid, veiligheid en goede bereikbaarheid van het stadion en het Arena gebied.

Het begint met een analyse
Programmamanager Joshua Serrão van het Innovatieteam van de gemeente Amsterdam vertelt: “OMC beschikt over digitale instrumenten en data die moeten bijdragen aan minder files, een beter bereikbaar ArenA-gebied. Hoe? Het begint met een analyse: is het een muziekconcert of een voetbalwedstijd, hoeveel bezoekers worden er verwacht en wat levert de programmering van de buren bij de Ziggo Dome, AFAS Live en Pathé Arena op aan bezoekersaantallen?”

Wat is nodig?
“Vervolgens wordt er gekeken welke kennis, expertise en kracht er nodig is om alles goed te laten verlopen. Dan hebben we in het OMC dus contact met allerlei diensten van de gemeente en partners, zoals: Rijkswaterstaat, Verkeer en Openbare Ruimte, Parkeren, Openbare Orde en Veiligheid, Stadsdeel Zuidoost, maar ook de Politie, Parkeergebouwen, Rijkswaterstaat, Trafficsupport, NS, GVB, Ziggo, AFAS Live. We verzamelen ook informatie van bijvoorbeeld kassasystemen, camerabeelden, social media, verkeer en vervoer en parkeergarages.”

Op de hoogte
Ook is er een online platfom (Mobility Portal) met informatie over hoe bezoekers het Arena-gebied kunnen bereiken. Hierop worden ook OV-reizigers op de hoogte gesteld van vertragingen of omleidingen.”

Van proef naar blijven
Verantwoordelijke voor innovatie vanuit de gemeente Amsterdam en de Arena, Ger Baron en Henk van Raan, hebben na de eerste proef met het OMC in het ArenA-gebied in 2016 besloten om de proef te verlengen. Nu één jaar na dato is duidelijk dat het OMC vaste voet aan de grond heeft gekregen in de ArenA en dat de pop-up verkeerscentrale een vervolg krijgt met nog meer technologische ontwikkelingen. Het OMC wordt ook de centrale plek voor zaken als veiligheid en schoonmaak in het ArenA-gebied.

STADSLEVEN
Elke maand leidt journalist en auteur Tracy Metz de live talkshow
Stadsleven. Steeds belicht ze een ander thema over het leven in steden in het algemeen en in Amsterdam in het bijzonder. Deze keer is het thema 'Discrimineren met data'.

DISCRIMINEREN MET DATA
Algoritmes worden op steeds grotere schaal ingezet om het gedrag van burgers te definiëren en te voorspellen. Op basis van deze voorspellingen worden vervolgens beslissingen genomen, die verregaande en onomkeerbare invloed hebben. Discrimineren met data lijkt een Orwelliaanse dystopie, maar is meer al werkelijkheid dan je denkt.

PROGRAMMA:
• Martijn De Waal, co-auteur van ‘De Platformsamenleving'. Strijd om publieke waarden in een online wereld‘, komt vertellen hoe platformen als Uber, Facebook of Airbnb er ongemerkt voor zorgen dat onze publieke belangen verloren gaan.

• “We bouwen aan een dictatuur van data“. Dirk Helbing, hoogleraar computationele sociologie aan de TU Delft, maakt zich grote zorgen over de algoritmische samenleving. Hij ontwikkelde daarom ‘Nervousnet‘, een datamining-systeem waarin de privacy en keuzevrijheid van de burger centraal staan.

• Per skype hebben we Sara Green Brodensen van de Deense startup deemly te gast, die werkt aan een systeem om al je online scores tot één score bij elkaar te brengen, aan de hand waarvan dan bijvoorbeeld je betrouwbaarheid kan worden vastgesteld. Waarom zouden we dit willen?

• Tijmen Schep, privacy designer en hoofd Creative bij het SETUP | MediaLab Utrecht, bespreekt hoe verregaand de invloed van discrimineren met data al is in Nederland. SETUP maakt dit uiterst invoelbaar aan de hand van verschillende projecten, zoals een koffiezetapparaat dat je op basis van je postcode een bakje lekkere of waterige koffie aanbiedt…

• Onze partner EYE Filmmuseum zal het thema weer op een bijzondere manier aanvliegen met onontdekt materiaal uit hun archief.
