RFI from Australia - Automatic signage/bollards

Please find below a request for information from the Australian Sunshine Coast Council, member of GSC3.city and the Australian Smart Cities Association:

RFI from ASCA Members - Automatic signage/bollards
The Sunshine Coast Council is interested to hear from other members who have successfully implemented an integrated signage/bollard solution.

We have a junction, sketched below, where the council is looking to install electronically controlled bollards to be able to block off one end of a street – we obviously need signage that links to the bollards that could be (for example):-

Blank with bollards down (road open)
Flashing a warning with bollards down (road closed)
Road closed with bollards up (road closed)
Flashing a warning with bollards about to retract (road closed)

The bollards should not raise if there’s an object on top of them (e.g. car, pedestrian) and this must be automatically detected via camera, in road sensors, etc., etc.

The bollards should be able to be controlled in any number of ways, for example:-
Local key / remote
Automatic timer (e.g. Friday 6pm-Friday 11pm)
remote central management solution
Emergency Vehicle Priority
This is not a formal RFQ but a request to make contact with other members, suppliers etc. who have been able to install an integrated system and would be willing to share contacts, lessons learned etc.

If you’re able to help, please contact David Coleman on +61 (0)408 074768 or david.coleman@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au

Kuwait hires South Korea to build smart cities

In designing the city of the future, why not start building one from scratch, instead of dealing with the legacy of an ‘unsmart city’. And why not copy a smart city that is already in operation successfully. That is what Kuwait thought when it hired a South Korean consortium to build Kuwaits newest smart city from scratch. A four billion dollar project. The name of the city will be South Saad Al-Abdullah and will provide accommodations for between 25,000 — 40,000 families. The new city will be 15,913 acres in size. Construction will start in 2019.

More and more hospitals switch to district heating

Why Smart is the new Green

Smart is the new Green. In the past decades, sustainability was a returning subject everywhere. In politics, business, everywhere. We all knew something had to be done in order to save the planet and to survive here. Many sustainable projects were thought of and executed, on an international, national, local and individual level. There was one problem, the ‘ROI’ for sustainable solutions was too low for all the levels mentioned. But there is a huge ROI for smart solutions. The megatrend of the last decade — Green products — will be replaced in this decade by Smart products and services.

Read my article below to learn more about why Smart is the new Green.

location for student conference/summer camp

The EURopean ENvironmental Science Student Association (EURENSSA) is still looking for a location to host our yearly student conference/summer camp. The event will take place from July 22nd to 29th 2017 in Amsterdam. For more information see www.eurenssa2017.org

Location requires:
- space for 30-40 people staying in tents
- facilities (at least 2 showers and toilets. can be very simple ie. compost toilets)
- water and electricity
- should not be more than 20 minutes walking distance from public transport
- a room that we can use for presentations and bad weather activities
- either a kitchen or a fire place that we can use for cooking

EURENSSA 2017 is entirely organized by volunteers and has a small budget. Commercial camping grounds are therefore not an option. Preferably we would like to have the event on the land of an organization that shares our passion for urban sustainability.

Call for Smart Cities Experts for our Research on evaluation of smart cities projects

For the purpose of our thesis for the MSc in e-Government of the University of the Aegean in Greece, "Smart Cities" actions/projects have been collected and categorized in ten (10) categories/clusters.
The aim of our research is to record experts' opinion about the importance of each action/project.
Please evaluate the importance of each action regarding its possible contribution to making a city smarter (or more sustainable, consuming fewer resources, with the use of ICT). You may also recommend actions, filling in the appropriate space (other actions) in each category. Please consider that you are giving your expert opinion for a medium-sized city, in a rather early-stage of ICT development.
We would be grateful if you could contribute with some of your knowledge to our research.

40 Open Data Projects that are redefining Smart Cities

In honor of New York City’s Open Data Week 2017, Peter Murray has compiled a resource featuring 40 smart, data-driven projects reminding us of open data’s value on the website Carto.com.

The examples are categorized by service type and alphabetically listed because projects democratizing access to open data should be celebrated equally:

* Navigating Open Data Sources
* Transparency and Accountability
* Performance Management
* Transportation and Infrastructure
* Resilient City Planning
* The IoT of Smart Cities
* Civic Engagement

Many of them could be of use to you. In any case, it gives great insight into the possibilities of open data to city governments.

Re:set Filmavond #7

Op deze Re:set Filmavond #7 vertonen wij Up in the Air van Jason Reitman, regisseur van o.a. Juno.
Toegang is vrij, maar we hanteren het Pay What You Like-principe. Jij bepaalt wat jij betaalt. Achteraf bedenk jij wat de avond je waard was en je doneert cash of per pin.

The Human Side of Smart Mobility. How do we shift focus to the humans living and working at the Zuidas?

Featured image

How do we keep the expanding Zuidas attainable and vibrant for the people? Those were the vital questions during the InnovationLab Zuidas that was held during the Unlikely Allies opening event of the Impact Hub on Friday 31 March.

What kind of people will be living and working at business district Zuidas in a few years from now? What would they require from the area? How do we keep the expanding Zuidas attainable and vibrant for the people? Those were the vital questions during the InnovationLab Zuidas that was held during the Unlikely Allies opening event of the Impact Hub on Friday 31 March.

In 2019 the accessibility of the Zuidas will become a real challenge. In a few years, the southern section of the road A10 will be widened, a tunnel will be created and the railway station will be upgraded as one of the main stations of Amsterdam. It is clear that the ongoing construction works will cause disruption. Apart from all these challenges, Amsterdam Smart City, Impact Hub, TransportLAB and UrbanConnectors wanted to deep dive into an underexposed topic: the impact of these operations for the thousands of people working and living in and passing through the area.

Around twenty people with an interesting mix of backgrounds attended the Innovation Lab. From social changemakers to project managers in the area itself and from policy makers to mobility experts, they participated in a so-called Mobility Café. In three rounds, groups talked, wrote and drew about the ideal mobility experience for people living and working on the Zuidas in 2025, the necessities to realize this experience and the concrete social interventions for the period of 2018-2020.

For instance, when will people take the bike to work instead of the car? How can we make sure people connect with each other more? And what does a vibrant Zuidas look like? Result? The various prototypes with a strong focus on the social side of the transition of the Zuidas had a lot to do with nudging, campaigning, behavioural change and fun. According to the attendees, the follow-up of this session should be focussing on cooperation with the various partners in the area, including the local residents and entrepreneurs.

A few of the 15 prototype examples:

All employers encourage their employees to cycle to work on Fridays, even CEOs do it. On Thursdays everyone gets a reminder to go to work by bike on Fridays. Because everybody working, living an studying on the Zuidas does this, going by car is a real no-go. Friday = bike day!

People are people and we love to interact. When we are busy we just sometimes forget this. Yellow will help you remember. Carry a yellow umbrella and someone might join you in the rain! Take a yellow mug and people will drink a coffee with you. A yellow mark on someone’s car? Carpooling!

The Zuidas is a busy space in Amsterdam. Green zones will make sure everyone escapes from the rush. Just read some documents in the park or join a Friday afternoon barbecue. Can’t find the building you need to be for your appointment? Just follow a coloured line on the floor. And in summer? Sleep near your work on the pop-up campsite!

Wat would your ideas be for a vibrant and attainable Zuidas? Are there any examples Amsterdam can learn from? How can be keep on interacting during construction works and how is the area kept attainable? Leave them in comments here!

Kieskeurig: Stemmen kan anders

Featured image

Eén stem. Eén bolletje. Eén naam. Vier jaar vastgelegd.

19.00 Inloop
19.30 – 20.15: Opening en presentatie Andreas Kinneging
20.15 – 21.00: Ervaar de alternatieve manier van kiezen
21.00 – 21.30: Panel met o.a. Rudy van Belkom (Het Nieuwe Kiezen) en Ahmed Aarad (GeenPeil)
21.30 – 22.15: Hapje & drankje
