Many citizens and city councils want to do something tangible to tackle climate change and improve local air quality. By taking part in this challenge, you can do something worthwhile for our planet by providing new, digital and smart solutions that use the Internet of Things and other IT innovations to reduce the environmental footprint of our cities.

This is the second ‘Decarbonathon’ Challenge after the successful first edition that took place last winter. This saw 230 teams from all over the world compete in the wake of COP21 to find new solutions to reducing CO2 emissions in cities. A follow-up initiative is presented here in which you are given the opportunity to take part in the Internet of Things Challenge for Greener Cities!

As one of the 15 finalist teams, you will have access to coaching by a team of experts (from the different partners) and the opportunity to pitch your idea in front of experts and a range of European companies and public stakeholders, including the European Union and the World Economic Forum. All three winners will have the opportunity to present their project during the ENGIE Innovation Week in June 2017 and get their project incubated ‘on-line’. Van 3 tot en met 5 mei presenteren Eindhoven, Amsterdam en Den Haag zich gezamenlijk met Smart City-projecten op een Holland Paviljoen tijdens het Smart Cities Conferentie en Expo in New York City.

Conferentie toegang

Expo & Holland paviljoen
Aanwezigheid op de expo biedt het podium om onder een ‘Holland paraplu’ uw innovatieve smart city oplossingen en projecten te presenteren. Gezamenlijk vergroten de Nederlandse ondernemers hiermee de zichtbaarheid en positie van 'Dutch Smart City Solutions'. Daarbij wordt het paviljoen gebruikt voor de promotie van de NL Smart City Strategie welke op 25 januari is aangeboden aan minister president Rutte.

Parallel aan de bovenstaande programma onderdelen organiseren het Nederlandse
Consulaat-Generaal in New York en incubator B. New York een intensief ‘Smart Cities
startup bootcamp’ programma voor Nederlandse startups om hen kennis te laten maken met het startup ecosysteem, netwerk en industrie in New York. Hiervoor geldt een separate inschrijving en selectieprocedure.

Are you also fascinated by sustainable, eco-friendly innovation in transport and logistics? Then participate in TransportLAB's online challenge, focusing on the connection between Logistics and Mobility.

Logistics are characterized by strict planning, deviations are costly and not wanted. However, nowadays deviations are more rule then exception.

We need excellent ideas/solutions to make transport and logistics future and social proof. From March 31st until April 20nd we therefore organize our annual online TransportLAB Challenge (1 open challenge and 3 specific challenges) focused on ‘Logistics Mobility’. The TransportLAB Challenge will be running online for two weeks, from April 1st – 14th. The physical kick-off meeting will take place during the opening event of the Impact Hub Amsterdam on March 31st. This day we also participate in the Smart City Innovation Lab ‘Keeping the Zuidas Accessible’.

Not just data crunchers but also for other experts (and of course students/young engineers, alone or as a team) that can contribute to our challenges.

“Ik wil het gevoel hebben dat ik mijn leven kan vorm geven zoals ik dat zelf wil. Dat gevoel van persoonlijke autonomie, dat is het allerbelangrijkste. Daarom werk ik bijvoorbeeld zelfstandig. Ik wil mijn eigen broek op kunnen houden.” Vrijheid en onafhankelijkheid lopen als een rode draad door Frank ’s leven. Als kind liep hij al niet graag achter de troepen aan. “Toen ik op de middelbare school zat in de jaren ’80 was iedereen kakker. Ik wilde meteen punker worden.”

Het ouderlijk huis in de Achterhoek verliet hij zo snel mogelijk. Hij wilde de wijde wereld in. Dat werd in eerste instantie de kunstacademie in Groningen waar hij grafisch ontwerp en fotografie studeerde. Hij kreeg er verkering met zijn vrouw Marije (44).

Niemand maakt je wat

Tijdens zijn studietijd in Groningen stapte Frank een keer aan boord bij vrienden die op een boot woonden. “Ik wilde daarna nog maar één ding: een eigen schip. Ik vind schepen zo mooi, in lijnvoering, in vorm… En het coolste van op een boot wonen is dat je gewoon baas op eigen schip bent. Niemand maakt je wat.”

Na hun studie verhuisden Frank en Marije naar Amsterdam maar het gewenste leven op het water liet nog even op zich wachten. Omdat ze op reis gingen bijvoorbeeld. Maar ook omdat banken hun vrije bestaan minder konden waarderen. Een hypotheek krijgen was ingewikkeld. Pas toen Frank een paar jaar achter elkaar ‘goede cijfers’ kon laten zien en Marije een vast contract had als hulpverlener, konden ze hun droom waarmaken. “Ik hield al jarenlang de markt in de gaten. Ik wist precies wat er waar vrijkwam in Amsterdam.” In 2007 kochten ze het binnenschip MS Greta met een ligplaats in de Houthavens. Frank en Marije kregen er zonen Kees (8) en Ties (7) en waren gelukkig, ondanks dat het comfort op het oude binnenschip soms te wensen over liet. “Als het regende kwam het via de ramen naar binnen en het was er vaak koud.”

Klaar voor de sloop

“Toen we gingen nadenken over vervangen van de MS Greta, wist ik al gauw, ik wil een zeeschip. Zo mooi met zo’n hoge brug, van dat dikke ijzerwerk en enorm veel ruimte” De zoektocht duurde lang maar uiteindelijk vond hij wat hij zocht: een, van oorsprong Deense, kustvaarder. “Ze lag klaar om gesloopt te worden. Een prachtig schip, heel zwaar gebouwd. Het staalwerk was nog goed. We hebben alles eruit gesloopt. Vanaf een lege huls zijn we gaan bouwen. Je kan het dan zo inrichten als je zelf belangrijk vindt. Dat is te gek. Ik weet heel goed wat ik wil. We hebben het allemaal min of meer zelf ontworpen.”

Smerige teer bende

Het wonen op het water maakte hen niet alleen bewuster van de natuur maar ook van het idee dat dingen ‘op’ kunnen. “In het vorige schip stookten we op diesel en hadden we een brandstoftank voor 1000 liter aan boord en daar moet je een hele tijd mee doen. Als het op is, is het op. Hetzelfde geldt voor water. Eens in de zoveel tijd wordt er 4 kuub water aan boord gepompt. Dan word je zuinig hoor.” Ze wilden vooral graag van de diesel af. "Als die brander wordt schoongemaakt, zo’n paar keer per jaar, zie je pas echt wat voor smerige teer bende het eigenlijk is. De man die dat doet, komt met een masker op want het is hartstikke kankerverwekkend. Echt vies. En het rendement is ook nog eens laag. Waarom zou je eigenlijk nog gebruik maken van fossiele brandstoffen als er goede alternatieven zijn?”

Allemaal maatwerk

Met de verbouwing van het nieuwe schip besloten ze het zo duurzaam mogelijk aan te pakken. Geen gemakkelijke opgave. Samen met de scheepsbouwer, leverancier en installateur gingen ze om de tafel om een plan te maken. “Het is allemaal maatwerk. Je moet aan de slag met een stalen bak die in het water ligt. Dat is heel anders dan een goed geïsoleerd nieuwbouwhuis met spouwmuren. De truc is een bouwer te vinden die daarvoor open staat” Frank straalt als hij erover vertelt. “Je moet helemaal uitvogelen hoe je het optimale eruit haalt. Alles moet met elkaar samenwerken en op elkaar afgestemd zijn. Er zit echt veel denkwerk in hoor. Ik heb héél veel mensen gesproken en advies gevraagd. Van patrijspoorten tot isolatie. Maar dat is een groot deel van de lol. Het is natuurlijk gewoon te gek om te doen.”
Tovenarij

Hoewel hij zoon is van een technisch ingenieur, had Frank voor de verbouwing nooit heel veel interesse in techniek. “Het heeft soms een beetje een suffig imago ofzo. Tot je je realiseert hoe innovatief en bijzonder het eigenlijk is. Dat iemand al die dingen gewoon bedacht heeft. Zo’n warmtepomp die wij hebben voor de verwarming. Op magische wijze kan je gebruik maken van wat er hier om ons heen gewoon is. Het lijkt wel tovenarij.” De planning is om komend voorjaar de zonnepanelen te leggen. Zodra die er zijn, hoeven Frank en Marije geen gebruik meer te maken van walstroom en zijn ze definitief onafhankelijk.

Liever fijn wonen dan extra nullen op mijn bankrekening

De verbouwing verliep soepel. Frank kijkt er tevreden op terug en is ontzettend blij met het eindresultaat. “Het is allemaal zo heerlijk luxe nu. We moeten er zelf ook nog aan wennen. We voelen ons de koning te rijk. Maar ik heb makkelijk praten hoor. Wij konden dit financieel zo doen. De juiste mensen vanaf het begin erbij betrekken. Als je een klein budget hebt, kies je hier misschien niet voor. Er zit bij ons veel spaargeld in.”

Frank ziet de boot als zijn pensioen. “Ik ben zelfstandig dus ik moet iets doen. Ik wil dat geld niet op de bank hebben staan. En beleggen, daar ben ik niet goed in. Het is een bewuste keuze het in ons huis te steken. Behalve dat ik het een veilige belegging vindt, levert het ons 30 jaar woongenot op. Mijn gezin en ik leven nu. Ik wil liever fijn wonen dan die extra nullen op mijn bankrekening. Het enige treurige van die gedachte is dat we van het schip af moeten als we ons pensioen willen verzilveren…. Eigenlijk wil ik hier nooit meer weg”

Tip van Frank:
Zet vanaf het allerprilste begin de juiste mensen – bouwer, installateur en leverancier – bij elkaar aan tafel en maak samen een integraal plan. Echt energiezuinig verbouwen werkt alleen als alles optimaal op elkaar afgestemd is.

The Amsterdam City event of 2017 will be held on June 8th. Previously this event was known as “Kennisdag”. It focusses on sharing knowledge and expertise between professionals who are involved in decision making processes in the city of Amsterdam. It is open for civil servants of the city of Amsterdam and the metropolitan region. The event offers workshops, masterclasses, lectures and face to face meetings on urban challenges. The theme of this event will be the Amsterdam Approach. This can be best described as open, adaptive and pragmatic. It is focused on an integrated approach involving stakeholders and civil society.
