Conversation about civic engagement in smart city initiatives

Hello,

My name is Teska and I am currently writing my masterthesis about civic engagement in the smart city developments. As a case I am analyzing this platform and look how different stakeholders position civic engagement, since the citizen is presented as an important link between the different stakeholders. I am looking for people that are also interested in the role of citizens within the smart city developments. Do you have a company or project that is focused on citizens or do you mainly follow the theme Citizens & Living on this platform?

Send me a direct message or email to teskadrosten@gmail.com. It will be valuable to talk with some people about this subject next to my own analysis.

Thank you in advance!

Best,

Teska Drosten

PostNL helps elderly in a pilot to enhance their self-reliance

Featured image

VeiligheidNL, Nutricia, Philips, ONVZ and PostNL work together in a project that aims to help elderly remain living at home independently. Specifically, we want to prevent them from falling. In 2016, every five minutes a 65 + person ended up in the emergency room after a fall and every day nine people decease because of a fall. Therefore, we bundle our forces and offer a solution with project TOM, ‘Thuis Onbezorgd Mobiel’ (Carefree Mobility at Home); a package of proven interventions to support the elderly.

Doing what works
Many elderly value their freedom and would like to remain living at home independently. But not everyone has relatives who can give informal care and the offer of support programs is fragmented. With project TOM, we offer a complete support package with measures that are proven to be effective. There will also be cooperation with trusted local professionals, such as the personal physiotherapist and dietitian.
The participants will not only follow a mobility program, but will also get personal dietary advice and a motion monitor, a device that tracks and analyzes movements. These interventions ensure that preventive measures can be taken if necessary. To reduce the risk of falling, the participants work twice a week on muscle strength, balance and coordination with a physical therapist and receive additional information. This intervention, by VeiligheidNL, is called ‘InBalans’ (in balance). Independent research shows that participants who follow this program are 61% less likely to fall.
Diet is also important when it comes to fall prevention. Especially for vulnerable elderly, it’s challenging to take in all the necessary nutrients on a daily basis, which worsens their overall condition. Therefore, all participants are screened for malnutrition and there’s a personal dietary advice for those who need it.

Personal attention
Personal attention is a key element in project TOM. Because many elderly who live at home independently feel lonely or can use some extra help, there are trained elderly advisors who will visit them and ONVZ Care Consultants of who will regularly call the elderly to hear how they are doing. They offer individual care and participants can contact them if they have any questions.
There’s also a new role for the mailman of PostNL. Within Project TOM, our mailman has contact with the senior and offers support in using the motion monitor.

Start project
Best is the first region where project TOM starts with a pilot. In the course of 2017, spread over The Netherlands, project TOM will start in three other test regions. Check out www.projecttom.nl for more information.

Discussion Paper: Democracy by design

Democracy by design:
Safeguarding democratic values in smart cities

Our world is digitizing and new systems are emerging. Across the globe, public and private parties are building the smart cities and smart infrastructures of tomorrow. They strive to improve the efficiency of systems, reduce costs, improve reliability and offer better services by implementing information technology in our public spaces and infrastructures.

These developments will play an important role in the way we will shape our future lives and society. Information technologies will be delegated decisions that affect our economic, social, personal and physical environment.

Amidst new possibilities, we need continue to ask ourselves ethical questions on the functioning of our infrastructures and cities. For example, when an energy system’s malfunction leads to temporary scarcity, who will enjoy uninterrupted energy supply? And who will have priority on the congested roads when a road accident has happened? Increasingly, information technology systems will decide how we are treated and who gets prioritized. Yet, whose technology makes decisions and based on which principles? And do these choices take into account the interests of all concerned?

We urgently need to start the discussion how our decision makers and citizens can make the right choices, as the pace of the developments is rapidly increasing.

Organising Smart City Projects: Lessons learned from Amsterdam

Featured image

On the 19th of December, the third edition of the Smart Citizens Talk took place in Pakhuis De Zwijger. During this event, lessons learned from smart city projects in Amsterdam were discussed. Read a short summary here.

Do you live in a smart city?

Frank Kresin (Research Director at Waag Society) gave an introduction on the definitions of a smart city and a smart citizen. He started with a question to the audience: do you live in a Smart City? This was an interesting question but hard to answer for the majority of the crowd. Is a city smart when it is efficient? Or when it has ‘smart citizens’? His conclusion was that the definition of a smart city depends on your own perspective and vision.

'Technology is not the problem'

After this introduction, Willem van Winden (Professor Urban Economy at Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences) showed the results of a research of the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences about the lessons learned from smart city projects in Amsterdam. They analysed 12 smart city projects in the city of Amsterdam and evaluated them with several categories. Click here to read the report. His main conclusion was: ‘Technology itself is not the problem, but the success depends on many other factors, for instance the way users are involved in the technology, transparency during the development/project, privacy and upscaling opportunities in a city/country.

Panel Discussion

After this, three interesting speakers shared their experiences and view on their smart city project (Bas Boorsma from Cisco, Francesca Miazzo from CITIES, Michiel Gerritsen from WeGo and Cor Gerritsen from Mokum Maritiem).

Bas Boorsma, Director Internet of Everything at Cisco (North Europe), was one of the speakers at the panel discussion. One of his messages was: 'As a company, do not wait for the right start-up, but start up your own start-up'.

Fransesca Miazzo is co-founder of the CITIES Foundation and is doing a project in Amsterdam Noord with plastic waste collection. An interesting quote of her side: ‘Related to Inclusiveness: Provide a platform were people can benefit from a change and to go from niche to mainstream.'

Michiel Gerritsen discussed their technology to make more efficiently use of cars in Amsterdam. Did you know that 90% of the cars in Amsterdam are standing still? If these cars can smartly ‘communicate’ with each other, this percentage could go down.

At the end, some speakers shared their take-home-message:

> ‘Learn from worst practices instead of best practices’ – Cor Gerritsen and Inge Oskam
>
> ‘Is your problem a shared problem? Don’t make a business out of it, but change the system’ – Fransesca Miazzo
>
> ‘Use your heart in developing smart projects, use your rational only for your business model’ – Bas Boorsma

Other interesting quotes/take-home-messages of the event are:

> ‘Sharing knowledge freely is the key for innovation’ – Frank Kresin (De Waag)
>
> ‘Your citizens know more than you’ – Frank Kresin
>
> ‘Cities are never finished’ – Frank Kresin
>
> ‘Technology is NOT the problem, it is the way how we use it’ – Willem van Winden
>
> 'To become a smart city, value & teach coding skills. Otherwise the smart citizen & city won't exist' – Frank Kresin
