ByteToken and Thales deliver RET mobile ticketing app in Rotterdam

Featured image

ByteToken, Ltd in conjunction with Thales Nederland B.V., have developed and delivered the first phase of a two-phase Mobile Ticketing and validation project for Rotterdam’s public transport operator, RET. This first phase release allows passengers to purchase tickets with iDEAL or credit card when it suits them and travel on the tram, bus, BOB bus and Fast Ferry, using ByteToken’s patented visually validated ticketing system on their smartphones.

The second phase release due later this year, will allow RET passengers to add metro ticketing to their smartphone using the National Dutch UIC 918-3 2D barcode ticketing standard. This phased rollout coincides with a major investment by RET in gate hardware and software upgrades from Thales Nederland B.V. designed to improve the passenger experience and make queuing for tickets a thing of the past. Further exciting developments of the app will include joint venue ticketing where the customer can buy travel and theatre and event tickets from within the app.

This deployment signals the beginning of an exciting phase of interconnected multi-modal ticketing where elements of MaaS (Mobility as a Service) and TaaS (Ticketing as a Service) combine to give the customer a far wider choice of purchasing and mobility options from one place...their phone.
