5G will be the new generation of mobile connectivity. The connection will be faster and more reliable, and will bring previously unknown possibilities for citizens and business. Amsterdam is exploring the opportunities and obstacles on the road to a safe and useful 5G network. One of the ways we do this is with our field lab in Amsterdam South East, from the train station to the Johan Cruijff ArenA. But also through regional, national and international collaborations.

What is the goal of the project?

Create an overview of the opportunities and obstacles involving 5G. Building expertise and experience on the subject in order to smoothen the expansion of 5G in Amsterdam.

What is the result of the project?

Great 5G connectivity for citizens in Amsterdam.

Who initiated the project and which organizations are involved?

The 5G project was initiated by the Chief Technology Office of the City of Amsterdam. Collaborations include: KPN and Johan Cruijff ArenA.

What is the next step?

In 2019 the city plans to realize a 5G street and continue the collaboration with the region towards EURO2020.

IoTs are deploying everywhere. Battery life as well limited airing (transmission) time because of their numbers are key considerations. Thanks to the development of 5G connectivity, these two essential characteristics will be greatly improved. 5G range in cities being poor, transmitters will have to be positioned on almost every lamp post. If connected to IoT gateways, they'll open the floodgates for exponential deployment of IoTs and participate in the first truly smart cities.
IoTs will be able to save on battery life by emitting for lesser durations and at lower powers. IoTs will increase in numbers as there will be more gateways available for them.
The effect on 5G on structuring the IoT gateways alone is a sufficient demonstration of its value it will provide to smart cities.
