Amsterdam Data Science and Elsevier Sign Long-Term Collaboration Agreement to Boost Local Data Science Scene

Focus on applying latest technology to search, share and reuse data Amsterdam, 1 November 2016 – Network organization Amsterdam Data Science (ADS) today signed an agreement with scientific information solutions provider Elsevier aimed at advancing data science research and education in Amsterdam. Both parties are embarking on a number of joint projects that will enable data scientists to access and share data and use the latest technology to collaborate and advance the field of data science together. Kajsa Ollongren, Alderperson and deputy mayor of the City of Amsterdam, supports the initiative: “The partnership between Elsevier and Amsterdam Data Science is great news for Amsterdam as it helps us to further develop the city as a hub in data science and attracting international technology talent. Seeing our best educational and research institutes teaming up with Netherlands-based multinational science & health data company Elsevier will boost Amsterdam’s international competitive position and improve the overall data tech climate in the greater Amsterdam metro area.” ADS and Elsevier will collaborate together on several fronts, including research and development, joint promotion of Amsterdam as a data science center, and data science talent development. This partnership marks the first long-term collaboration agreement signed by ADS, an initiative of the University of Amsterdam, VU University, Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences and Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica. “Business and society are generating and storing more data than ever before”, said Prof. Marcel Worring, Director of the Informatics Institute at the University of Amsterdam. “The most-heard questions across sectors are how to find and use that data to gain new insights and make informed decisions, but also how to enable reproducibility of the data, deploy semantic technologies and create a safe data sharing environment. Answering these questions requires a multi-stakeholder approach involving partners from academics, business and society. ADS bundles these forces. In Elsevier we’ve found a partner that has a proven track record in deploying technology to analyze data, enable data sharing and reuse and facilitate collaboration among researchers.” “As a global technology company, we’re engaging in data science and big data collaborations around the world”, said Michiel Kolman, Senior Vice President Global Academic Relations at Elsevier. “But our company has its roots and its head office in the Netherlands so it’s exciting to collaborate with ADS and local institutions to help develop our home city as a national and international data science hub, making it an even more attractive place for data science researchers. In addition to contributing to ADS’ goals ourselves, we’re looking forward to learn a lot from the companies and knowledge institutes that are part of the ADS network. Advancing data science is a multi-stakeholder endeavor.” A number of projects have already started. These are focused on improving data search and reproducibility of research that will ultimately result in higher quality research outcomes. These projects entail: \* Developing better methods and infrastructure to share data for scientific experiments, ensuring better reuse of data in a safe and trusted manner. \* Developing new search and discovery technologies for searching data underlying scientific experiments. \* Applying knowledge graph technology to, for instance, help researchers find funding for their research or identify new relations that were previously not detectable. Both parties have committed to developing new projects together in the years to come, among other things providing corporate work experience programs for grad students and post-docs at Elsevier, and specialized Elsevier staff engaging in teaching the next generation data scientists. Testing Amsterdam Broedplaatsen in Boston USA.

Throughout history, the Dutch have been world famous for reclaiming land to make way for more productive space. Fast forward to today, and we see how the city is reclaiming derelict space to make way for creative industries. With over 60 locations to date, ‘Amsterdam Broedplaatsen’ has already transformed former problem-properties into more productive and profitable districts. Since its inception 10 years ago, this approach has proven to be a success having created acclaimed hotbeds like De Ceuvel, A-Lab, B.Amsterdam. Can the success of Amsterdam Broedplaatsen work internationally? Last month, we tested the Broedplaatsen concept in Boston. This 24hrs hands-on workshop asked 8 teams of entrepreneurs, spatial planners and community leaders to transform 15 properties in the Dorchester & Mattapan neighbourhoods. The challenge utilised digital tools and strategies of relevant data collection, applying design thinking, and immersion techniques. All eight teams rapid prototyped some serious pop-up solutions that will have a lasting impact on the growth and sustainability of the district communities. Start Smart Mobility Amsterdam 2019 - 2025

An accessible, liveable and less polluted city: this is what we’d like to achieve for residents, visitors and businesses in Amsterdam today and for future generations. Smarter and cleaner mobility can help us realise these aims. As a city, we want to offer Amsterdammers, commuters and visitors alternatives to the present forms of mobility, providing a door-to-door solution and contributing to our aims. This includes shared electric transport, from cars to bikes, in ‘Neighbourhood eHubs’ (eBuurthubs) established in cooperation with local residents. That way, we can use clean modes of transport and create more space in the city by sharing. We can then use this extra space to improve liveability. More info on www.amsterdam.nl/smartmobility

How Smart Cities & Technology Are Evolving

**Over the centuries, each urban expansion was followed by a period of catching up to face a new, more complex reality. We still experience it today when we know that more than half a million people sleep on the streets in the United States every night and that rents are rising faster than incomes.** In London, between 1997 and 2016, the number of jobs and the population increased by 40% and 25% respectively, while accommodation capacity only increased by 15%. The average American employee's commuting time has reached new records: an average of 225 hours per year (or more than nine days in total) is spent on the road or in transport. As in the past, the current reality and the [future](https://www.investmentbank.barclays.com/our-insights/Rethinking-smart-cities-prioritising-infrastructure.html) of a physical place requires a good understanding of the place in question. This is why the meaning of place in a city stems both from its logistical environment and from the social and emotional context that unites its inhabitants. **What smart city technonoly does in percentage** The explosion of integrated sensors, mobile devices, high-speed wireless connections, combined with exponential growth in data and sophisticated analysis tools, offers geospatial perspectives that go beyond the theoretical framework. This led to the birth of “[smart cities](https://www.verdict.co.uk/smart-cities-timeline/)”. McKinsey estimates that the technologies deployed by smart cities can reduce mortality by 8 to 10%, improve rescue response times by 20 to 35%, decrease travel times by 15 to 20%, decrease by 8 to 15% disease burden and 10-15% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. **A new generation of smart cities** Despite some setbacks here and there, on a global or national scale, metropolises, communities and neighborhoods have followed the path of progress, with more concrete results. According to many [futurists](https://keynotespeakers.info/futurist-speakers/), we are in the midst of a new generation of smart cities with a more pragmatic sense of city management. Cities that not only apply intelligence to their macro-systems, but seek to optimize micro-sites for global transformations. A true smart city uses dynamic 3D digital basemaps to obtain real-time information on the condition of neighborhoods, residential areas or buildings down to the lowest level (floor, corridor and housing) or highest (above existing structures such as the roof). By making all this information accessible to managers; police officers, firefighters and first aid personnel, public transport employees, care providers, grocers and traders, distributors, teachers, social workers, and especially to the inhabitants, each individual will be able to know where the bus is and at what time it will arrive, where a leak has occurred on the water distribution network, in which car parks there are still free spaces, The coronavirus pandemic has demonstrated the value of a collective city-wide solution, which involves knowing where people in difficulty are and how to help them. For Alison Brooks, a pioneer on [innovative ideas](https://keynotespeakers.info/innovation/): As we have seen, a smart city must respond to four major challenges: * **Operational Efficiency:** Streamline business processes and workflows to improve decision making and locate resources for maximum benefit. The digital dashboard is the ideal tool for this.  * **Data-driven performance:** take advantage of data flows from the [Internet of Things](https://www.businessinsider.com/iot-smart-city-technology) (IoT), mobile devices, but also sensors that are part of the city's infrastructure, vehicles and buildings, then analyze the whole this data thanks to artificial intelligence. This has made it possible to achieve concrete results such as the adaptive regulation of traffic lights, or real-time (and no longer static) decision-making at the scale of the city and professional services.  * **Citizen involvement:** Some smart cities of the first wave encountered cultural and societal obstacles in deploying the technology without asking the opinion of the inhabitants. True smart cities involve communities from the start, identifying the priorities of the inhabitants, responding to the specific concerns and needs of different groups and working for greater social equity.  * **Planning and engineering:** 3D modeling, profoundly transformed by the [digital revolution](https://www.i-scoop.eu/digital-transformation/) and human-centered design, makes it possible to anticipate and mitigate economic, environmental or social upheavals and the resulting tensions. These cards, also known under the name of “digital twins”, take into account a multitude of elements (buildings, infrastructure, vegetation, transit, etc.) down to the smallest level (floor or room, for example). They are the underlying platform of the true smart city. The history of our species, that is to say of human *civilization*, in fact merges with the history of the *city* ; both have the same Latin origin. The city and its systems have allowed a real concentration of resources and the emergence of an entrepreneurial spirit and collective creativity that have won over the entire planet. Thanks to [powerful leaders](https://motivationalspeakerz.com/leadership/) who think outside the box and the cutting-edge tools available to us today and the lessons we have learned from this experience, we have the possibility of reinventing these systems to promote a fairer, more sustainable and more harmonious development model. **Note from ASC: Have a question? Let’s hear it in the comments.**
