“Coöperatie NDSM Energie U.A.” is a co-operative of more than 50 businesses located on an industrial area in the northern part of Amsterdam - the NDSM-Wharf. The shared ambition of this co-operative is to make the area, - formerly one of Europe’s largest ship building wharfs - energy neutral by 2030 and to collectively create value through sustainable initiatives. The co-operative aims to collectively and locally produce and supply renewable energy and efficiently close local energy and material loops, whilst raising awareness of sustainably producing and using energy. By pioneering and accelerating the local energy transition the Co-operative aims to build a scalable blueprint for other industrial areas.
Against the backdrop of its’ rough industrial heritage the former NDSM shipwharf harbours a unique mix of industries - HQs of Dutch retail giant HEMA, VIACOM/MTV and Damen’s shipyard neighbour with set designers, restaurants, hotels and bars, renowned techno festivals as well as independent artists and craftsmen. In total local businesses now employ about 10.000 people, just as much as during the heyday of the shipbuilding activities in the early 20th Century. In the next few decades the area is bound to transform to a mix of the current industrial and residential function. As a part of the largest housing project in the Netherlands ‘Haven-stad’ there are 40.000 new dwellings planned for building up until 2040 in the area of Western and Northern Amsterdam, also comprising the NDSM-Wharf.
