At a time of accelerated growth and ubiquity, connectivity technologies like AI and quantum computing allow us to find ourselves anywhere quickly. The most important question to ask is therefore where exactly do we want to be.
Some platforms know exactly what series you would like to watch today based on your previous preferences and when to display you an advertisement for a baby chair before you even know that you need one. Imagine that a city knows for you and in real-time who is worth meeting so that you can develop as an expert, and which team needs your key competencies so that you can be hired immediately.
As we are more conscious of ourselves and our goals, the world is responding to our actions with more synchronicity. It is one basic and very old knowledge based on the concept of the subconscious and selective perception. What’s more, psychology elaborates that the main factor of satisfaction with a certain situation is the set of relationships with the environment and people that suit us best.
For one good relation set will be a quiet desk and a world of numbers and tables, for the other it will be an energetic communication with others towards an ambitious aim of changing the world. In separated ontologies, those types can be described and classified differently. We are diverse in so many many ways that there is no perfect system that would describe precisely what makes us unique. Nevertheless, some systems are pretty well adjusted, enough to make them a part of our language or part of smart city competencies’ platform, and even to use them to help navigate citizens through activities and events.
In my dream, cities of the future help us adapt the outside world to our deep needs. The main component of a smart city is not a network of external sensors, but a deep radar of our internal needs which looks deep into our psyche and soul. Doesn’t that fit the slogan of the technocratic city?
In our living lab in Wroclaw, we worked with young people on solutions to help them with the new labor market. We tested there the latest achievements of psychology and a new approach to motivation and interpersonal development of young students.
We used our imagination to create a city-wide game that was about defeating the mythical anti-creator by working together to develop creative skills. During the one year process we tried to answer many questions: How to apply the national qualifications framework in an accessible form? Who will be good programmers? Who will never become one? How to change thinking about the city and its role? How to recognize talents at an early stage? How can we build qualities such as leadership, commitment, and entrepreneurship?
Cities need to take immediate action towards mapping and supporting digital and future-proof competencies and approaches.
On the one hand, we helped students get to know each other better, and on the other, internalized with a multilevel transformation of the external world. We used to work on paintings, create our own icons, debate with experts. We also required communication of our own interpersonal discoveries. We created personal websites, business cards, and team presentations. It helps us (and the platform) to understand each one's unique feature and potential roles.
The final stage was to create a small project as a team for one of the local companies or an NGO. Communication with a peer group was just as important as the flow of information with the career adviser and mentors platform. We set up the framework of internal game paths of development and individual competencies.
In the future, artificial intelligence can also be an important player in the ecosystem, so we need to communicate our needs and intentions understandable for its language so that it can help in suggesting the path to achieving our personal goals. We discover that badges and icons can be a great tool to build a common language between different actors. The results of the project evaluation gave outstanding results. Over 60% of people felt closer to the group, which is a good help in the circumstances of growing alienation in the digital and mobile world. Most participants realized their own needs and dreams and made the first step to fulfill them. At the end we replicated and simulated talks with future employer HR, to give a chance to newly acquired competences Our model has been recommended for implementation across the country. However, I feel that hardly anyone in the technology sector understands the importance of soft technologies in the ecosystem of an intelligent country and city.
Even if it is underlined in the newest digital strategies for the EU there is no solution to support mass talent evaluation and constant mapping process. The core element of the Smart Cities Polska vision and strategy is to build smart cities on social capital and supporting it by delivering digital tools for competencies diagnosis and places for meetings and collaboration.
The next stage of our journey will be to conduct an experiment with our living lab on a larger scale and improve the technologies behind the group management and development processes of joint projects. Our new team members will be experts in artificial intelligence, bots, and e-learning platforms. We also want to start international cooperation, hence the translation of our working method into Russian and English.
What I have learned about myself during the project:
The test confirms that I am a participant characteristically (Factor S’) so I want to participate in culture and values, and a technician personality (Factor V’) so I want to gain the know-how to act efficiently. Temperamentally, I am averse to the group (Factor -O) and matter (Factor M) so I act as an independent analyst.
Does my current work fulfill my personal relationship needs?
The role of the coordinator of teams dealing with the development of systems for cities is in line with my social and technical needs. I work on both theoretical models and on occasionally while networking with people. In a living lab environment, I can work with young people so I can meet and recognize my participation needs.
This is a good predictor of satisfaction and harmonic career. Everyone is different, and we need to know how to team up in new teams in a very fast manner by using one language and methodology linked with AI This self-knowledge is enough to precisely match potential roles in the ecosystem and team behavior.
Using the latest methods, it takes less than 15 minutes to see myself structure with great precision. It is easier than quantitative tests based on questions like popular methodology DISC or MBTI, although the results are correlated.

Smart cities can become a cybernetic battlefield. Mixing old systems with new ones, city components not prepared for cyberattacks exposes us to a number of threats. Tomorrow in Katowice at CYBERSEC – European Cybersecurity Forum I will share my conclusions on the possibilities of securing our smart cities and regions using Blockchain.
In other thematic sessions, the issue of geopolitics and cyber defense in the context of 5G will also appear, in which Jacek Bartosiak will speak.
Blockchain is a term that means not only a distributed database. This is a completely new interinstitutional system that extracts data from silos and enables the creation of a new economy. Unfortunately, #IoT sensors, city management systems, city cards, and yet institutions and individuals are exposed to criminal activity. How to prepare for defense? Will we finally start thinking about our future and create our own plans and situational awareness?
I hope that by discussing among such noble panelists we will go a step further in creating our security.
CHALLENGE TO BE ADDRESSED:
Today 55% of the world population lives in urban areas, with United Nations predictions showing that by 2050 this percentage will rise up to 68%. Cities and urban communities are at the forefront of the digital revolution and very often serve as test beds for emerging technologies and cybersecurity solutions, as they help them face key urban challenges, from transportation and power supply to civic engagement. Regions and cities have it all to be the leading competence and innovation centres for cybersecurity.
Local ecosystems allow for real and efficient cooperation between the triple helix of government (both regional and national), university centres for research and innovation, large international companies, local SMEs and startups.
Additional support from the venture capital community is also a feature of these ecosystems. In turn, an innovative sector of products and services to secure the world’s digital DNA can develop on this foundation. Some regions and cities have already established regional cybersecurity hubs but others need to be incentivized and inspired to follow the trend.
RESPONSE BY CYBERSEC:
We will invite representatives of selected innovation centres for cybersecurity to Poland to establish cooperation links and best practice sharing mechanisms with CEE regions and cities that are now lagging behind in building Digital Innovation Hubs for cybersecurity. We have to make the urban digital transformation human-centric and secure-by-design to ensure that in the times to come our world’s digital DNA is properly secured. That is why decision-makers at the regional level have to work hand in hand with industry leaders to build smart, secure and safe cities and regions – the foundational issues of the world.
The CYBERSEC CEE format for regions & cities will provide a suitable platform to approach the business sector, academia and local and regional governments to ensure they continue to be the places for people and technologies to thrive.

Experts from V4 countries took part in the professional conference; David Bárta presented the National Concept of the Czech Republic in the field of Smart Cities in the form of public service innovations. Polish representative Mateusz Jarosiewicz discussed the possibilities of using Blockchain technology in cities. Milan Ftáčnik introduced the plans of the Smart Solutions and Innovation Council, which was created only a few weeks ago.
This year is the 10th anniversary of my decision to devote myself to the creation of the models of social changes. After banging my head against the wall, trying to scale the default coworking business model, I realized that only city-wide catalyst models such as smart city can survive and are ones of the pillars of the future of coworking business as well as cities itself.
It took some time when I tried to persuade the atomized community of small coworking owners that our model will not sustain and will probably end up very, very soon, but they didn’t want to listen. Next year, the network of publicly financed spaces turned up into business, disrupting the co-working space in every major city.
It was 2011, but of course, it was yet not what is coming now, when the main international networks are opening a multitude of huge spaces in the capital cities, using deep pockets of VC bankers and property managers and owners.
Warm, organic community growth generated by its leaders — it’s time to say goodbye. The future is in large corporate global coworking behemots.
Well, I foresighted that too. But in fact, the problem of coworking and the growth of these amazing communities (in Poland) lay somewhere else, than a lot of people think, and I hope I’m right on this. Poland is brain-drained, and the number of freelancers and creatives on the market is not growing, but even decreasing!
The problem can stand like this: how to encourage the average tee drinking person (from outside of creative industries) to fill all of the new transformed places? In other words: how to make people learn and become creative for the purpose of office rental to grow?
Introducing serious gaming can be one of the solutions. In Poland, we developed a complex model of how to get secondary schools and technical schools’ students on board of smart city and into the creative industry but it’s for another story.
In some cities, the important issue is how to not rent buildings to corporate employees, but how to use the growing number of freelancers, digital nomads and creative industries to fill new floors in new, sophisticated buildings and even neighborhoods.
We need to rethink that on a big scale. What you do not see in the small business sheet, is what large operators see. And they are making the impact right now.
The revolution will soon come over how the city is treated, used and perceived. For more and more people, city spaces become a meeting platform where they share time for creative activities with other people. As a reminder, for most of us, city streets are still the means of the fastest transfer between work and home and visiting many strange offices in order to get along with life in the so-called society. But this era is going to the end according to Toffler theory of The Third Wave. (and many others).
Reality changes quickly and aims to transform most experiences according to new paradigms and new reality. When we talk, new technologies “eat” workplaces and administrative bodies one by one. The new reality is about convergence, experience, sensitivity to all activities related to science and useful society or urban activities.
Step by step, engaging people in new social models such as coworking, as well as smart city, we as frontier innovators introduce expectations to a whole new level for the citizens. And imagine how competitive the city will be, after being completely reorganized to facilitate the coworking culture in its all places and spaces. The new intelligent digital layer of the social city will finally emanate in different forms.
The most important coworking values: community, cooperation, openness can be a great foundation for building other smart city solutions on it.
At this point, I really want to encourage the coworking and startup community to cooperate with municipal offices to facilitate and promote new socio-economic models, such as cooperation platforms, sharing economy and social entrepreneurship.
Why it’s so important?
In July 2011, Mitsui Fudosan announced its new concept, Kashiwa-no-ha Smart City, based on three pillars: environment symbiosis, health and longevity, and creation of new industry.
Gate Square, which serves as the center of the smart city and brings together offices, residences, retail space, a hotel, and academic facilities, encourages interaction among the residents of the area, as well as those who commute to the city to work. (@Mitsui Fudosan Co., Ltd. )
The city’s perspective offers access to all taxpayers, and all this means that communication takes place in all urban social groups. At the same time, there is no way for city administration by themselves to adapt to the new disruptive innovation in enough fast pace because of the development opportunities have always will be stalled in administrative and budgetary never-ending processes.
The line of cooperation between city halls and coworking and startups must be marked. If they all have an impact, cities can grow well and live fully. But what exactly is a smart city? it is about citizens in all aspects of their lives and development using the latest technological advances, as well as methods for integrating and empowering people to take the driver seat in cities.
So what concerned me and what I’m talking about in the Smart City Podcast is that if, in fact, startups offering services to their citizens are often placed in coworking. So I assumed what the future role of this community for the city might be of great importance. Recognizing the positive effect of gathering creative people in post-industrial districts in order to revitalize it gives me hope that the urban strategy will eventually include a systematic approach to support and benefits for local communities.
But it is not what always happens. In most cases the positive effect of this coalition is consumed by private business not the city itself.
There is still a clash between the old-fashioned archaic hierarchy and the partial approach to city management, and new grassroots impulses. The new urbanists concepts are about driving development through the combination of ideas, products that enable the crowd’s wisdom in creating the city. So-called smart city 3.0 approach. But what cannot be combined in an old paradigm with only an improvement called sometimes “creative” or “smart” can be combined into a completely new model of an intelligent city, and ultimately it will replace those catching up and still converting cities.
What is to come is, of course, standardized as a framework for programming applications for “i-stores” and “app markets” for city creators and visionaries. It is not possible to maintain the basic needs of citizens’ tools based on a certain form of capitalist/market-oriented intermediary operating from the sky and oceans. Everything will be brought to local clouds and as close as it can be to the community of people adopting these independent standards, these standards will be introduced at the EU level or at the global level.
The re-orientation of the use of common communication / technology platforms and the emergence of new interfaces will also be achieved thanks to new data transfer standards (such 5G) and a fundamental change of the current system’s pillars, such as financial transactions (Fintech), as well as fluid law enforcement and liquidity through blockchain, as well as distributed and reliable databases.
Imagine what will happen if all applications are just a larger complex system that will allow cities to do just better. And I do not want to issue a label — or a brand for it (if I may i’ll name it City2.0neOS) Certainly the aggregation and the process of setting standards for cities can be a process that will end with a completely new ecosystem for innovation and unveiling our living to the fullest, and this is what it is all about.
SpaceOS is a smart technology, creating smart buildings and smart offices by letting workspaces turn the physical spaces into digital assets.
So in my opinion, a new model of cities based on a foundation of Open Source idea (Github and Linux are the greater examples) will be created. It will be standing on the values that create a coworking movement, and this model will be a combination of well-known solutions and applications in a standardized interurban form that will be developed by the community for its own purposes and best interests. And what’s best this movement is vibrant and alive and it’s happening all over the world. I hope in my best will that in the best solution and it is unstoppable and impossible to reverse.
