First driverless taxis on the road (6/8)

**Since mid-2022, Cruise and Waymo have been allowed to offer a ride-hailing service without a safety driver in a quiet part of San Francisco from 11pm to 6am. The [permit](https://cities-today.com/driverless-taxis-get-the-green-light-in-san-francisco/?utm_source=cities-today&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=230818) has now been extended to the entire city throughout the day. The company has 400 cars and Waymo 250. So far, it has not been an unqualified success.**   #### A turbulent start In a hilarious incident, an empty taxi was pulled over by police; it stopped properly, but kept going after a few seconds, leaving the officers wondering if they should give chase. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating this incident, as well as [several others](https://slate.com/technology/2022/12/san-francisco-waymo-cruise-self-driving-cars-robotaxis.html) involving Cruise taxis stalling at intersections, and the Fire Department reports 60 incidents involving autonomous taxis. Pending further investigation, both companies are only allowed to operate half of their fleet. In addition to the fire department and public transport companies, trade unions are also opposed to the growth of autonomous taxis. California's governor has rejected the objections, fearing that BigTech will swap the state for more car-friendly ones. It is [expected](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2023-08-16/paid-driverless-taxis-are-slowly-becoming-a-reality) that autonomous taxis will gradually enter all major US cities, at a rate just below that of Uber and Lyft.   Cruise has already hooked another big fish: In the not-too-distant future, the company will be allowed to operate autonomous taxis in parts of Dubai. The number of autonomous taxi services in the world can still be counted on one hand. [Baidu](https://techcrunch.com/2022/12/26/baidu-night-time-driverless-robotaxis-china/?guccounter=1&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAK2ZmcKO7Obw9_02NlUFLIh90EXEp3ZoV7jkr1Ik9LnYPzyKmLUJSUQRNdqtE8rHt9dbWZzTpQRIUNjs4UfQNxyMoVcNi-DxWXkiRKRNMIeV15b1B12gYGs11sXEwYFbpzIyOI0PjQxK-fVjDGX2GFsaeUCaToRdtNnMdL4q4jnQ) has been offering ride-hailing services in Wuhan since December 2022, and robot taxis have been operating in parts of Shenzen since then. [Singapore](https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/comfortdelgro-to-pilot-2-electric-driverless-taxis-in-2023) was the first city in the world to have several autonomous taxis operating on a very small scale. These were developed by nuTonomy, an MIT spin-off, but the service is still in an experimental phase. Another company, Mobileye, also plans to start operating in Singapore this year. The same company announced in 2022 that it would launch a service in Germany in 2023 in partnership with car rental company Sixt 6, but nothing more has been heard. A survey by JD Power found that almost two-thirds of Germans do not trust 'self-driving cars'. But that opinion could change quickly if safety is proven and the benefits become clear.   #### What is it like to drive a robotaxi? Currently, the group of robotaxi users is still small, mainly because the range is limited in space and time. The first customers are early adopters who want to experience the ride.   **Curious readers: [Here](https://medium.com/@paul.k.pallaghy/game-over-tesla-fsd-beta-11-3-kills-b8d90f0800a2) you can drive a Tesla equipped with the new beta 1.4 self-driving system, and [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6v036bBD31o&t=65s) you can board a robotaxi in Shenzhen.**   The robotaxis work by hailing: You use an app to say where you are and where you want to go, and the computer makes sure the nearest taxi picks you up. Meanwhile, you can adjust the temperature in the car and tune in to your favourite radio station. Inside the car, passengers will find tablets with information about the journey. They remind passengers to close all doors and fasten their seatbelts. Passengers can communicate with remote support staff at the touch of a button. TV cameras allow passengers to watch. Passengers can end the journey at any time by pressing a button. If a passenger forgets to close the door, the vehicle will do it for them. The price of a ride in a robotaxi is just below the price of a ride with Uber or Lyft. The price level is strongly influenced by the current high purchase price of a robotaxi, which is about $175,000 more than a regular taxi. Research shows that people are willing to give up their own cars if robotaxis are available on demand and the rides cost significantly less than a regular taxi. But then the [road](https://www.dropbox.com/s/tnhui315ch562r0/Impacts%20shared%20mobility%20on%20carbon%20foorprint.pdf?dl=0) is open for a huge increase in car journeys, CO2 emissions and the cannibalisation of public transport, which I previously called the horror scenario.   #### Roboshuttles In some cities, such as Detroit, Austin, Stockholm, Tallinn and Berlin, as well as Amsterdam and Rotterdam, minibuses operate without a driver, but usually with a safety officer on board. They are small vehicles with a maximum speed of 25 km/h, which operate in the traffic lane or on traffic-calmed streets and follow a fixed route. They are usually part of pilot projects exploring the possibilities of this mode of transport as a means of pre- and post-transport. #### Free download Recently, I published a new e-book with 25 advices for improving the quality of our living environment. AI4Cities - There is only one moment to be on time

The legendary footballer Johan Cruijff once said: “There is just one moment when you can be exactly on time”. That moment is now. If we want to retain the same pleasant city that we have today, we must start acting now on reducing the city’s CO2 footprint. Amsterdam has set the goal to reduce CO2 emissions by 55% in 2030 and by 95% in 2050. With the current measures Amsterdam falls short of reaching this goal. That’s why we need bold innovative solutions! Technology is set to play an increasingly important role in helping Amsterdam to achieve its ambitions to become a carbon-neutral city. Various projects using Artificial Intelligence technology (AI) have already been successfully executed and incorporated. Check out our full blogpost and how you can support us with your solution!

Kennissessie ChatGPT

Of biedt ChatGPT juist hele nieuwe mogelijkheden? Wat denken AI-specialisten, onderzoekers en onderwijskundigen hiervan? #### Tijd om het gesprek aan te gaan Met elkaar én met ChatGPT! We nodigen je uit voor een kennissessie over de rol van AI in het onderwijs. A Smart City Government Has A Rather Bigger Role To Play

History proves that cities have always been the centre of civilization. Be it social or economic, the innovation and the developments taking place in cities have always found its reverberations reaching other parts of the globe. Today, urbanisation is spreading around the world at a tremendous rate. More than half of the global population lives in cities and the number is still counting. A developed city like London has seen a population rise from 1 to 8.5 million in 140 years while even developing cities like Mumbai, Lagos, Sao Paulo, and Istanbul have seen a minimum 200,000 people flowing in each year in the recent decades. Lagos has witnessed a staggering 600,000 people moving in per year with a rate of 70 people per hour.

Replacing short car trips with LEV's may reduce CO2 emissions, study suggests

## Smart mobility and LEV’s: a general introduction  #Smart-Mobility is an important aspect for daily life and commuting/recurrent transportation needs and in this day&age there are many potential solution(s) for smart-mobility in Amsterdam. Today some of these new vehicles types are mostly restricted on city streets and Amsterdam citizens cannot grasp the potential of this vehicles. These devices can go up to at least 20km of range for short trips and with vehicle speeds ranging from 20, 25, 45 km/h (e-scooter, e-bike, moped respectively) and some as far as 90km/h (micro-car 90), etc. ## Potential CO2 emission reduction research There is a study regarding CO2 potential emission reduction by the use of light electric vehicles (LEV's) in contrast to short car trips usage. LEV's CO2 emissions is averaged at 24g CO2 eq/km compared with conventional vehicles (including EV's) averaged at 203g CO2 eq/km. The findings are quite relevant since it could reduce CO2 emissions as much as 44% = 57 million tones CO2 eq per year. The full study can be found at URL link below. ## Proposal If the Gemeente Amsterdam would lift the ban on LEV’s, this would be beneficial for Amsterdam citizens since they would have less noise (silent devices), cleaner air (by the study analysis) and maybe more fun alternative to ICE-scooters and cars.

The Future of Urban Energy

It's unlikely that our current energy system will be able to continue to guarantee reliability in the future as different factors cause a massive impact on our energy supply. Although electricity use in Amsterdam is relatively stable today, this will change in the near future. Due to expected population growth, increasing use of electric vehicles and the shift from gas boilers to electric heat pumps, we will start consuming more and more electricity. On the other hand, and at the same time, the supply of solar and wind energy is growing rapidly. This sustainable energy will replace non-renewable energy increasingly into the system. Unfortunately, this is not without complications. With all these changes ahead: how can we transition to a reliable, affordable and sustainable energy system? In the below long-read we explain how we work on the future of urban energy.

Register to get your spot! Introducing Fashion for Good's Innovation Masterclass series - a chance to dig deeper into sustainable fashion with insights and expertise from across the fashion industry. Over three sessions you will learn about how innovation creates positive impact across each step of the fashion value chain; a must for anyone studying or working in fashion or interested in how innovations are changing fashion for good. We’ll be (virtually) inviting key industry leaders to co-host an interactive masterclass with a Fashion for Good expert. They’ll share what they’re doing to integrate and champion innovation within their organisations and will share key learnings they’ve gathered along their journey. Each masterclass will focus on a particular theme from a different perspective; from brands, to producers and educators! **What will you learn in this Masterclass?** While in the first and second masterclass we looked at what brands and manufacturers are doing differently right now, our third session looks to the future - at the role education plays in equipping us with the skillsets needed for today's challenges and beyond. As we’ve seen, this change will not only come from fashion designers, we need new business models and technical innovations just as much. We'll be inviting a range of speakers from different disciplines to shed light on how they motivate and prepare their students to disrupt the fashion industry. What vision for the future do they have and what learnings can you take away from their teaching methods to apply in your own work? We'll look at what has changed over the years, how the different disciplines can work together, what “skillsets” are needed and where to get these skills, as well as the most valuable lessons that lie in today's classrooms! **Speakers** **Frédéric Godart, Associate Professor (with tenure)of Organizational Behavior at INSEAD** Frédéric's research explores the factors that spark creativity in organisations, as well as the global dynamics of creative industries.
