What would society look like if we assigned a central role to repair? And what happens if we see repair as more than a quick fix? The symposium ‘In Repair: towards a post-throwaway society’ builds on recent studies of repair, which frame the concept in a much broader context.

Activities like mending, renovating, healing, rehabilitating, revitalizing, recovering, curing or hacking help us deal with problems in a social, sustainable, and resourceful way. During this evening we explore how repair thinking could set directions for a post-throwaway society. A society in which imperfection, broken systems, relations and objects are welcomed rather than shunned; a logic of breakdown bridges past, present and future; and even tax might shift from labour to natural resource use.

While increasingly popular, 3D-printing has been applied mostly in small-scale, local contexts, also when applied in urban development projects. Is it possible to move this technology out of the margins and turn it into a transformative force when dealing with large-scaled urban complexities? According to the academic talents of AMS Institute, there is reason to believe we can. For example in the recycling of plastic city waste. Can 3D-printing play a transformative role in urban development? How can we print our way from micro- to macro-impact in waste recycling?

Introductory keynote speaker of the evening is Prof. dr. Ellen van Bueren, professor of Urban Development Management at the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment (TU Delft) and Principal Investigator at AMS.
She develops tangible concepts, tools and principles for an integrated area-specific approach to contemporary urban challenges. “Balancing different interests is central to urban development. How do public and private parties, professionally organised or ‘bottom-up’, manage to create a pleasant, sustainable living environment?”

3d-Printing in the Circular City
This on-going research project investigates the metropolitan challenge of reducing municipal plastic waste. It introduces an innovative solution for the recycling of discarded plastics, which takes advantage of large scale 3d-printing and produces parts that improve public space and the built environment. The multidisciplinary consortium – consisting of TU Delft, DUS architects, Actual Build, AEB Amsterdam, The New Raw and the AMS Institute – combine expertise and elaborate on this concept in the case study of Amsterdam North. The project will be presented by: Foteini Setaki & Panos Sakkas.

AMS Science for the City
Together with Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions (AMS Institute) Pakhuis de Zwijger organizes a series on metropolitan development and innovation. How can big data, prototyping, 3D-printing and scientific innovation help to solve the complex challenges that the metropole Amsterdam faces? Upcoming and established (inter)national urban professionals from AMS and its academic partners (TU Delft, Wageningen University, MIT) will introduce us to the newest research and practical solutions within urban themes as water, energy, waste, food, data and mobility.

Ahead of the Dutch national elections, the magazine De Ingenieur asked ten opinion formers what the next Government needs to do to help the Netherlands transition to greater renewable energy use and the circular economy. Metabolic’s CEO Eva Gladek was one of those asked to outline what needs to happen to realise a more sustainable future.

Metabolic outlined to De Ingenieur that whilst it is exiting that the Government has committed to realising a circular economy by 2050 (and reducing material use by half by 2030), the plans remain vague and require some strong leadership. She suggested five ways that will help get us there:

1. Make it clear what a circular economy should look like

2. Provide data on material flows

3. Do something about the demand for commodities

4. Develop new financing models

5. Create a market for circular products
