Commercial waste in the inner city

Featured image

Exploring how cooperation between entrepreneurs and waste collectors can contribute to a more attractive inner city.

What is the goal of the project?

Entrepreneurs in Amsterdam that offer more than nine garbage bags a week are responsible for the collection of their own commercial waste. Due to the large choice in private companies collecting commercial waste, several collectors are active in busy shopping areas.

Every day companies such as Sita, Icova, Van Gansewinkel and the municipality of Amsterdam drive one after the other through the inner city; only garbage of their own customers is taken, whilst that of the neighbour is left for the competitor. This leads to less attractive shopping areas. Moreover, it causes unnecessary vehicle movements in an already crowded city and leads to air pollution, noise disturbance and unsafe situations in traffic.

This project explores how cooperation between entrepreneurs and waste collectors can contribute to a more attractive inner city.

Who initiated the project and which organizations are involved?

This project is initiated by Centrum XL, MKB Amsterdam, the Municipality of Amsterdam and the University of Applied Sciences Amsterdam (HvA)
