Barcelona and Amsterdam are world-leading "smart cities" says Jason Pomeroy

Western cities have done a better job of integrating technology into their infrastructure than the new wave of Asian smart cities, according to architect and television presenter Jason Pomeroy.

Singapore-based Pomeroy, the architect behind Asia's first zero-carbon house, claims that Barcelona and Amsterdam are far more successful examples of a smart city than places like Songdo, the new hi-tech satellite city in South Korea.

Case Study Japan: GIS-technologies in urban planning

This case study describes how geographic information system (GIS) technologies facilitate urban planning in Japan. It draws on examples from three components of urban planning: city master planning, regulation revision and city planning ordinance revision. Urban planning is defined as “city planning, city planning restrictions, city planning projects and any other necessary matters concerning city planning for the sound development and orderly improvement of cities.”45 Spatial data (locational information) can be useful in all stages of urban planning from planning, consensus building and implementation to management and maintenance.

Six smart cities that are very smart, and why

Smart cities are no longer the future. They are here and they are growing rapidly, keeping pace with the expansion of the Internet of Things and impacting municipal services all over the world. To improve city living, smart cities collaborate with developers, big data specialists, innovators and strategic thinkers. Large companies such as IBM and Cisco work together with civic planning authorities and universities, focusing on improving public transport, law enforcement, energy use and waste management by using data-driven systems. Think smart traffic light systems, useful apps, smart street lights and smart parking.

Here are some inspiring smart cities from all corners of the globe that are getting it right – in no particular order:

Portfolio-holder The Hague: ‘We are the Secure Digital Gateway to Europe’

To what extent can Amsterdam and The Hague help each other?

While the worldwide attack by the Wannacry ransomware is still fresh in our memory, the city of The Hague once again underlines the importance of internet security and privacy. The Hague, the City of Peace and Justice, is emphatically presenting itself as the Secure Digital Gateway to Europe. “These days you can no longer solve problems on your own, you must cooperate and innovate.”

The Judicial Capital already is exemplary regarding cooperation. No less than 260 partners collaborate in the so-called Hague Security Delta. The town is now also organising MoCo The Hague, during which three speakers will shine a light on the approach to privacy and security on the internet. The Hague portfolio-holder Saskia Bruines, “By organising events and meetings, I hope that people will acquire the knowledge which they can use in their own organisation, and I also hope that they meet other relevant people to cooperate with.”

Who owns the smart city's data?

City authorities need to enhance public-private cooperation to build sustainable urban transformation agendas. Private sector introduces innovation, talent and provide capital to the urban development process, while playing a leading role in design, implementation, operations and maintenance, and sustainability of the urban development and services initiatives. But it seems that everywhere private companies are exploiting data which should be in the public domain.

Google, Apple, Facebook, Fitbit, Snap, Amazon and Uber – they all probably know more about you than the authorities do. And let’s be clear: they are not aiding the government and its citizens to have a healthier, more sustainable existence.

Revolution in public transport: China’s smart bus

The world’s first virtual train track is unveiled in China. The smart bus, or driverless train, is equipped with sensors that can read the dimensions of roads and plan its own route. Like a train, it’s modular and carriages can be added on; but like a bus, it runs on the road. It follows white-dotted lines on the road, and therefore a train track does not need to be laid. This makes the infrastructure much cheaper and therefore accessible to many more cities than standard railways or metro systems.

5G Internet: the connectivity of the future

5G promises data speeds in the tens of megabits per second. No more buffering, no more slow connections, no more lagging teleconferencing. It will provide data transmission as fast as the best hard-wired connections. That sounds impossible, but it’s not. And it’s something we need. Brussels might become the first European city with a 5G network. Belgian Telecomregulator BIPT lengthened the license of operator Broadband Belgium with five years until 2024.

* Incredibly fast Internet
* Huge amounts of data
* Necessary to connect the IoT
* The challenge: an entirely new infrastructure

Seoullo 7017: recycling a highway into city park

Two weeks ago the grand opening of Seoullo 70107 took place in the Korean capital Seoul. A 16 metre high overdue highway overpass was transformed into a public city park with 24,000 trees, the biggest variety of Korean plant species. The ‘sky garden’ is one kilometre long, eleven metres wide and connects various walkways with elevators and escalators.
