Speculative Design: The Hyperconnected City

Featured image

Speculative design is an approach that offers tools to map the future in a meaningful way.
Instead of focusing on problems in the present, speculative designs imagine how developments change over time and affect the future. By building both possible and preferable futures, you combine business vision and practice. It enables you to describe your role in the near future as a business and offers speculation about matching products or services. It opens up ways of thinking about a business beyond an immediate attempt to solve current problems, and instead see opportunities to affect long term change in the world. In this session, we will explore the challenges and the opportunities of The Hyperconnected City.

Speculative Design for Businesses

Featured image

Map the future of your business in a meaningful way!

The future is uncertain. Recent environmental, societal and technological developments give us a hard time understanding the changes our world goes through. For Businesses it can be challenging to keep up. A focus on products, services and customers isn’t enough anymore: it also means understanding the world and our relationship with it, and within it, in a different way.

Speculative design is an approach that offers tools to map the future in a meaningful way. Instead of focussing on problems in the present, speculative designs imagines how developments change over time and effect the future. By building a both possible and preferable future you combine business vision and practice. It enables you to describe your role in the near future as a business and offers speculation about matching products or services. It opens up ways of thinking about business beyond an immediate attempt to solve current problems, and instead see opportunities to affect longer term change in the world.

We will use the intervention design approach, a method that aims at (re)shaping a new practice that is useful now, not in the future.

DSS LEADS SPECULATIVE FUTURES CHAPTER AMSTERDAM

Featured image

The Digital Society School is proud to announce the opening of the Speculative Futures Chapter, Amsterdam.

Speculative Futures is an international community of meetups focused on Speculative & Critical Design, Design Fiction, Futurism, and Strategy & Foresight. Together, we will examine the ephemeral and the tangible; showcasing creative projects, far out research, and tangible strategies for affecting change. In our meetups we will be hosting workshops around speculative design for those interested in speculative design, critical design, discursive design, strategic foresight, futurism, science fiction and visionary approaches that use design and visual culture to imagine potential futures. From time, we would like to invite speakers—practitioners, teachers, students, and other professionals who will talk about their work and methods.

If you’re interested and would like to keep up to date with our meetups, please consider joining our meetup group: https://www.meetup.com/Speculative-Futures-Amsterdam/

The chapter will be lead by Theo Ploeg, design and media sociologist and Mick Jongeling, Digital Transformation Designer at Digital to Physical track.
