What is the goal of the project?

If the solutions prove successful, the local government can significantly kick-start a startup’s career by investing or becoming launching customer. Since 2015, 43 startups in total were selected to join the programme.

What is the result of the project?

The goals of the programme includes stimulating public/private collaboration and the startup ecosystem. For Amsterdam one of the most important goals is how we can procure more innovation and make the procurement process more innovative. The Startup in Residence Programme contributes to these goals.

Who initiated the project and which organizations are involved?

The programme was initiated by the City of Amsterdam modelled on a similar programme in San Francisco.

What is the next step?

Startup in Residence Amsterdam launches a new program on the themes of sustainability and mobility!

The City of Amsterdam is once again looking for the best start-ups, scale-ups, innovative SMEs, and social entrepreneurs with creative and innovative solutions for the city’s mobility and sustainability issues. Solutions are sought for a wide range of topics, from 'emission-free recreational boats' and 'circular renovation' to 'inclusive mobility' and 'local food logistics'. Like previous years, this edition also has the so-called "wild card challenge" for both themes. If entrepreneurs have good ideas and solutions that are not described in one of the issues, they can register for the wildcard. The complete series of challenges can be found at www.startupinresidence.amsterdam

You can sign up from June 24, 2020 12:00 to August 11, 2020 23:59.

What can other cities learn from your project?

We've learned some valuable lessons from the first three programmes. The most important feedback we received from the startups, is that they mostly valued the fact that the startup programme's main focus is aimed at adding social value, as oppossed to only focus on investments. Learnings from the programme include the improvement of the commitment from the clients within the City, a better structure for the mentors of the programme and more structured communication with all partners involved.
