​Helmond gets ‘smartest’ neighborhood of the Netherlands

A suburb in Helmond called Brandevoort will be transformed into the ‘ smartest’ neighborhood in terms of housing and sustainability.

Besides this, the suburb will showcase innovations in the field of mobility, health and social cohesion. The municipality of Helmond announced the plan 'Brainport Smart Village', in which Helmond invites the business community and regional partners to create a laboratory for testing smart city technology.

City of the future
According to the municipality ‘ de Marke’ the part of Brandevoort that still needs to be developed, is the ideal place for a living lab for the city of the future. This new part offers space for 500 to 1.500 homes. Helmond expects to begin with the implementation of specific plans for the smart district in 2017.

The Internet of Things (IoT) solutions in Smart Mobility need to keep Helmond accessible. In addition, innovations in food technology should lead to healthy food choices. In the field of sustainable housing, the municipality sees most opportunities for geothermal and solar fields to keep the energy use of homes low.
