Circular City
Events

Moving from a linear to a circular economy means minimising the waste and pollution by reducing, recycling and reusing. The City of Amsterdam aims to redesign twenty product- or material chains. The implementation of material reuse strategies has the potential to create a value of €85 million per year within the construction sector and €150 million per year with more efficient organic residual streams. Amsterdam set up an innovation program on the circular economy; www.amsterdamsmartcity.com/circularamsterdam. By converting waste into electricity, urban heating and construction materials, the Amsterdam Electricity Company generates 900 kWh per 1000 kg of waste. 75% of the sewage system is separated for waste and rain water and the silt which remains after treating waste water is converted into natural gas. Share your innovative concepts and ideas on circular economy here.

FASHION FOR GOOD’S NEW EXHIBIT ‘GROW’ SHOWS THE FUTURE OF FASHION’S MATERIALS

Featured image

Fruit skin fabric, mushroom ‘leather’, spider-silk, dye made by bacteria and algae; GROW, the new exhibition from the Fashion for Good Museum in Amsterdam explores the biomaterials and cutting-edge innovations that are shaping the sustainable future of fashion. What exactly are biomaterials? How sustainable are they and what makes them different from traditional fibres like cotton and hemp? And does bio always mean better and sustainable? Navigating the many different kinds of sustainable materials can be challenging. For their year-long exhibition, curated and developed in-house for the first time, the Fashion for Good Museum dives into all things biomaterials.

WHAT ARE BIOMATERIALS?
Biomaterial is a very generic word used to describe materials that are biological, and originate from living organisms. When you think of biomaterials, probably the first things that come to mind are cotton, hemp and linen. Because the word is not specific, it can easily be confusing. The world of biomaterials is way bigger and ever evolving. Think as big as silk, fruitskins (waste), mycelium (mushroom roots) or even algae, spider and caterpillar silk, cellulosics (coming from plants) and bioplastics, all of which are part of the biomaterials world.

LOVE FASHION FROM THE GROUND UP
Fashion has always celebrated the ingenuity of nature, from its organic shapes and patterns, materials and fibres, to the wide array of colours and textures. With the rise of fast fashion, the natural world is plundered for its resources, putting the relationship between fashion and nature under strain.

The GROW expo shows how trailblazing innovations can instead take inspiration from nature and how scientists are using this cycle of creation and recreation to make the sustainable materials of the future.

Showcasing conventional biomaterials such as organic cotton and biodegradable materials such as flax or hemp, the expo also presents more innovative brands and products from pioneers such as Pangaia (available for the first time in a retail store in the Netherlands), FREITAG F-ABRIC, the Nude Label, Phool, Bananatex and Bioglitz - with a special glitter station, featuring in the museum’s GOOD SHOP.

GROW 1.0 opens its door to the public from April 6th.
Virtual tours of the exhibition can be booked on the website.
Physical visits to the museum can be reserved when possible.

Inschrijving SHARE Award 2021 geopend - innovatieve bedrijven gezocht

Unpack Impact | 2021

How can we change the system through collaboration between entrepreneurs and financiers? Learn from new entrepreneur-investor models and take the food and agri sector as an example. The event is not restricted to the agrifood topic only.

The world has focused first on energy in its effort to stop greenhouse gas emissions, but agriculture is also a key contributor to climate change and biodiversity loss. Introducing transformative change in agriculture demands involvement from all actors in the value chain, from farmers and producers to investors and consumers. It also needs new economic models. How can investors, organisations, policymakers and farmers collaborate to create a sustainable, transformative change?

Join us for a provocative conversation about how innovators in food and agri are working with forward-thinking financiers to enable new models. How are these models applicable to other sectors? We invite (want-to-be) entrepreneurs and (want-to-be) investors in diverse contexts to join us to hear the learnings, struggles and opportunities of co-creating new more generative models.

Hear from:

Danielle de Nie (Stichting Wij.land) and Liesbeth Soer (Triodos Regenerative Money Centre) about their collaboration to launch Aardpeer, an organisation making land available to nature-inclusive farmers. They will share insights on dealing with the issue of acquiring expensive farmland while transitioning towards sustainable change in agriculture.

Koen van Seijen (Toniic), managing a community for deeper impact investing and host of the podcast Investing in Regenerative Agriculture and Food. He will dig into how we can use our money to regenerate soil, people and local communities.

Brad Vanstone (Willicroft), founded this impact enterprise to bring quality plant-based cheeses to market and is now working with Dutch dairy farmers to help them transition to more sustainable alternatives.

Keynote

Our special keynote speaker is Joel Solomon, founding partner of Renewal Funds, Canada's largest mission venture capital firm, and co-author of The Clean Money Revolution, addressing investment strategies to boost systematic impact and transforming the culture of capitalism. Joel will share what he has learned from his wide experience in pioneering the integrated use of capital for social impact and strengthening sustainable businesses across various sectors.

Reserve your online-spot here !

Program:

14:30 Welcome by Tatiana Glad, Co-founder and Director, Impact Hub Amsterdam and Ellen Oetelmans, Program Manager, Amsterdam Impact (City of Amsterdam)

  • Conversation with Aardpeer, Toniic and Willicroft in a talk show style with audience Q&A
  • Keynote speaker: Joel Solomon with audience Q&A
